Slayer's Legacy- Chapter 4

NO GOOD DEED

"This ain't no Shangri-La. Nobody knows no Shangri-La."--Don Henley

As the guys entered the massive home they were surprised, yet releaved to find it vacant. Well, all but JC. He had hoped that Lance had somehow found his way there. It had been almost two days now since Lance had disappeared without a trace. When Joss had suggested this place they new it was a long shot but now, faced with the reality of not finding Lance, JC began to sink into a deep depression.

"Well, now that we're here we might as well get settled in for the night. Then we should have a look around and see what we can turn up." Joss suggested. He had seen JC's reaction to them discovering the place empty, so he took it upon himself to take charge of the situation. As the others went upstairs to find bedrooms he pulled JC asside to check on him. "How you holding up JC?"

"I really thought he'd be here." JC sighed. "Guess I got my hopes up too soon. What are we gonna do now?" JC looked completely lost and Joss' heart went out to him.

"I'll tell you what we're not gonna do, give up. He might show up here yet. If he senses that you're here he may come here to find you. Let's wait until we've all had a good nights sleep before we make any major decisions. Okay?"

All JC could manage was a slight nod. Joss wrapped his arm tightly around JC's shoulders and slowly lead him up the stairs to their rooms.

Somewhere in the States:

Lance was getting frustrated. For almost two days now he had been on the trail of Jean-Baptiste, who always seemed one step ahead of him. He seemed to be toying with him, leading him on some sort of wild goose chase. He also had lost touch with JC. At first he had been able to sense where he and the rest of the guys were. But as time went on they seemed to drift further away from him. He had gone back briefly to California, thinking they would wait for him to return. He was surprise to learn they had checked out almost as soon as he had disappeared.

Now he sat on a bench in Cenrtal Park. He had always loved New York. He had even looked into buying an apartment there at one time. But being a southern boy he had never really gotten used to the colder climate. He knew this wasn't the safest place to be at night but he figured he'd be able to handle himself if anything should happen.

Lance needed to figure out his next move. JB's trail had gone cold, and the guys had vanished. He was at a loss as to what to do next. Suddenly a blood-curddling scream pierced the darkness. Lance, on instinct lept to his feet and ran in the direction of the screams. He came upon a horifying site as a large man was about to attack a small boy. He was no older than thirteen Lance guessed and he immediately jumped in to defend him. Letting his vampire form show. As he wrestled with the man he noticed the boy sitting nearby, frozen with fear.

After a short struggle he was finally able to overtake the attacker, who only then bared a large set of fangs. The older vampire hissed at Lance and tried to rush him but he was too fast. He spun around and ran from the scene but not before pychically relaying a message to Lance.

"You will pay for your transgressions young one!" He screamed in Lance's mind. Causing him to momentarily fall to his knees. Once he had regained his mind he was able to see the boy sitting on the grass nearby. Still frozen in the same spot. Lance quickly calmed himself and very slowly began to approach him. He had been through hell tonight and Lance didn't want to cause further psychological damage to him.

"Are you okay?" Lance softly spoke. "Its alright now, that guy ran off. Did he hurt you at all?" The boy shhok his head but remained sitting with his knees pulled tightly up to his chest. He refused to make eye conact. Lance sighed and sat down next to the boy. He was glad he had come along before the vampire attacked. The boy was very small in stature and very thin too. The condition of his clothes and the distict smell that was coming from him caused Lance to conclude that he was probably homeless. But did he have a family somewhere? He couldn't just leave the boy here to fend for himself. He was shaken from his thoughts as the boy finally spoke.

"Y-you're Lance Bass." Lance looked at the boy who now stared at him wide-eyed. "You saved my life! I thought that guy was gonna kill me." Lance just smiled at him

"Well you're safe now buddy. Where do you live? We should get you home."

"I don't have a home. My folks died awhile back and I didn't have any relatives to stay with. I was staying in this group home but the older kids kept beating me up. I'm not exactly the most strongest kid in the world and the staff never did anything to help. So I ran away. I've been on the streets for a few months now." The kid explained as Lance listened intently.

"But how have you been able to survive without money for food?" Lance asked

The boy lowered his head in shame and that was all the answer Lance needed. Of course, that's probably how he had gotten himself into the situation Lance had found him in tonight. He had been selling himself for money. Lance quickly changed the subject.

"So what's your name buddy? I can't very well keep calling my new friend 'buddy' and 'pal' now can I?"

"It's Cameron actually. But most of my friends called me Cam."

"Well, its great to meet you Cam. Now we have to figure out what to do with you. You can't stay out here all night, and I need to leave soon. Do you have any friends in the city?"

"No, I'm not from New York originally. We hadn't really been here long before my parents died, so I don't have anyone here I know." Cameron lowered his head again before speaking. "Couldn't I come with you? No one would miss me. There's no one to miss me. I wouldn't be any trouble Lance I swear."

"I don't know Cam. My life is really complicated right now. I woudn't feel right dragging you into it. And besides that--"

"Why James, who have we here? A new friend, what would JC say?" The voice ran chills up Lance's spine.

"JB? How did you find me?" He turned his attention back to Cameron who had a questioning look on his face."Cameron you gotta get outta here."

"But-."

"I'll find you later, I promise. Go, now." Cameron hesitated briefly then did as he was told. Running as fast as he could away from the park."This is between you and me JB. He has nothing to do with this, you leave him alone. Do you hear me?"

"As you wish James. He is of little importance to me. It is you I have come for. I am in need of your assisstance."

"And just what the hell makes you think I would help you?" Lance demanded, just before being struck from behind and falling to the ground unconcious.

They were unaware that Cameron, who had doubled back through the woods, had been a witness to the scene. He hadn't had the opportunity to tell Lance that he too had some special abilities. Abilities such as putting up a psychic forcefield around himself. Allowing him to remain unnoticed by JB and his men. He watched as the men lifted Lance's limp body and they instantly disappeared. But before they had gone Cameron was able to quickly enter their minds and erase any memories they had of him. Lance's mind however he left untouched. Hoping that one day soon the man would make good on his promise and come back for him. Cameron sighed heavily and disappeared into the night.

The next morning at the chateau:

None of the guys had slept very well. It was quite evident on their faces as they sat around a large oval dinning room table. There was no food in the place so Joss and Chris had volunteered to go into the village and stock up. The rest of the guys just sat around waiting. Evebtually they heared the latch click on the large front door and JC, Justin and Joey hopped to their feet to help carry in the food. Going into the foyer they were surprised to find it empty. Justin stuck his head outside and looked around. No one was in sight.

"What the hell?" Joey asked, as they all looked at each other confused.

"I know, I could have sworn I heared someone come in." Justin exclaimed as a form began to materialize behind JC and Joey. " Uh, guys?"

JC and Joey turned just as the form came into full view. Before them stood a man with long dark hair and glowing red eyes. He bared his fangs and for the first time the guys realized they were in the pressence of a vampire.

"Where is Jean-Baptiste?" He demanded. When he did not get a response he asked again, louder. "Where is Jean-Baptiste? One of his recent conquests has intruded on my domain. I demand justice!" JC was the first one to speak.

"Who the hell are you?"

"Gilles de Rais, at your service sir. Now where is that scoundrel JB? His minions have disturbed me for the last time. Its gotten so a vampire can't make an honest killing these days. And such a sweet young innocent he was. Until that self righteous prick came and spoiled it for me." It was at this point that he began to eye Justin laciviously. "But maybe all is not lost. Perhaps I can find a suitable replacement."

Justin caught on to his meaning and slowly began to back away. JC saw this and stepped in between them. From a back pocket he pulled out a small stake and went into a defensive stance. Ready to strike if necessary.

"What do you think you can hope to accomplish with that puny thing?" Gilles chuckled.

"Take another step and find out asshole." JC was caught off guard as Gilles leapt over him, putting Justin into a choke hold.

"Back off or I snap his neck! I will not bow down to a pathetic human. I will take what I want and what I want is this beautiful boy." Gilles tipped Justin's head to the side and he licked at his jugular. Making Justin cringe and whimper with fear. "Do not fret my dear boy. your pain will not last long. I will make sure of it."

"Let him go Gilles." Joss demanded. He and Chris had heared the commotion when they had come back from town and were able to sneak in undetected. Gilles turned to see Joss with a loaded crossbow. He hissed and allowed his vampire form to show. He was not going to give up so easily this time. He was hungry and Justin was going to make a fine meal. And he was going to be a lot of fun to play with afterwards.

JC, still holding the stake and looking for an opportunity to strike, locked eyes with Joss. He nodded and Joss did so in response. JC then motioned for Joey to pounce on Justin at his signal. Holding up three fingers JC silently counted. One, two, three! In one swift motion JC tackled Gilles from behind and Joey grabbed Justin and yanked him from Gilles grasp.Once he was on the ground Joss was able to shoot him through the heart. Gilles de Rais was no more.

"Who the fuck was that?" Chris finally spoke, as things began to calm down once again.

*"Gilles de Rais, alias Blue Bear, among other things." Joss answered. "Vampire and notorious fifteenth century serial killer. He was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of young men and women. When he was finally caught he was hung and his body was set on fire. Unfortunately his family was allowed to remove the body before the fire reached it and he was buried. If they had let him burn that would have been the end of it."

"Wait." Joey interrupted. " He said that he had been interrupted by one of JB's 'recent conquests.' That the guy had stepped in and prevented him from killing a kid. You don't think...?"

"That it was Lance?" The thought now struck JC.

"And we might have just fucked up our best chance of finding him." Justin finished the thought.

"Now what?" Chris asked

"We sit and wait. What other choice do we have?" Joss spoke.

Back in the States:

JB was standing over Lance body. He was still passed out from the blow to the head he had taken the night before. They were in a large wherehouse that was bathed in darkness, except for a bright floodlight that hung over the now caged Lance. A large blonde man stepped out of the shadows and smiled down at him.

"So what do you have planned for the freak sir?" The man sneered

"All things will be revealed in time my dear Louis." JB assured him. "The Hunter has no idea that in saving his beloved James he will be sealing his own fate. This is going to be quite enjoyable."

Later, back in New York

Cameron retuned to the park several times hoping to find any sign that Lance had returned. He knew better though. After what he had seen last night he was sure that Lance had long since forgotten him. He had enough to worry about without adding Cam to the mix. As he headed to his usual spot where he conducted his 'business' he thought about what it would have been like to be the son of Lance Bass. A life without worries of where his next meal would come from, or who's bed he would sleep in. He had to stop that type of thinking though. It was pointless to fantasize about something that would never happen.

As he reached the spot he saw a man approaching from across the street. He was about 6'2" with brown hair and eyes. Very well dressed for this part of town he thought. As their eyes met Cam knew instantly what the guy was after.

"Want some company?" He asked. This was how the routine always started

"How much?"

"$20 for a blow, $50 for a fuck. And I don't do bareback or swallow."

"Well I'm in town on business and could really use the company. How much for the whole night?

Cam couldn't believe his luck. This guy had "sucker" stamped on his forehead. He could have taken him for hundreds. Quickly Cam entered his thoughts. The guy was petrified. He was new to this world and especially with one as young as him. Cam decided to take it easy on him. Maybe Cam was the sucker? But he took a chance.

"$200 plus a meal and a hot bath and you got yourself a deal."

"Done." The man agreed, sticking out his hand to seal the deal. "My name's John"

"Nice to meet ya." Cam said, trying his best to hold back a laugh at the irony. "Well lets get going then. you can pay me when we get there."

"Yeah. Right. Sure." He hesitated and Cam thought maybe he had changed his mind. "Let's go."

With that they hailed a taxi and headed back to John's hotel. Cameron thoughts suddenly turned back to Lance. He hoped that he would be able to survive long enough to have Lance find him again. He had lucked out tonight but he knew from his earlier experience that he might not be so lucky the next time.

'Don't forget me Lance.' Cam thought to himself. 'I'm not sure how much longer I can last out here...'**

Author's Notes--* Gilles de Rais was an actual historical figure. If you would like to learn more about him and have a strong stomach, go here:

**Don't worry. I don't think this is the last we've seen of Cameron. You never know when or where he might show up. And just a reminder to please read Journal of the Undead by Dark Writer. The sister story to Slayer's Legacy.
