Chapter One.
Life, in it's own way, is quite unique. They say that everyone knows each other through at least a chain of seven people. So that means, I know someone, who knows someone, who knows someone, and so on until you reach that person. It's completely possible, and the odds look like they're real. It goes a little like the song "It's a Small World After All". If you've never heard, it, well, it's not really about how people know each other, but the phrase has been related to that. Anyway, enough of my babbling. Just remember this fact: Everyone knows everyone and everybody's business is everybody's business.
It all started on a November morning. The third period bell rang and I walked into lunch. I spotted my best friend, Pam, from across the room. She has got to be the coolest girl I've ever met. She understands me and is there for me when I need a friend. I would never ever think about dating Pam, because she is, well, straight and I am, well, gay. She's just one of my best friends and that's as easily as I can put it. No one knows my sexuality. No one. Not my best friends, not my parents, and not even those who don't like me. I'm just a typical fourteen-year old who attends ninth grade.
I walked over to Pam, who was seated by now and had her book-bag on the table as usual. This usually bothered me because it took up space, but that's just a little joke between us, and it's become a routine. I sat down across from Pam and pushed her backpack off the table, with it landing on the floor and making a loud thump. She smiled at me, then looked down at her notebook to write some more. Pam is always writing, and she's a good writer too. I can recall reading many a poem of hers which made me cry.
Anyway, today was my day. I was finally ready to come out of the closet. I had decided on this date, November 17th, because it is the date on which I first realized that I was gay. Of course I always had those feelings as a kid, but I accepted them fully on that date. I asked Pam if she was ready to go up to the lunch line, to which she replied `no'. It was the usual reply. The same routine every day, every week, and every month. I liked it that way.
"Pam," she looked up from her notebook. "Are you ready to go to the line yet? I want to buy a salad," I told her.
"Nope," she answered with a smile.
After a few more minutes of "Wanna go in the line?" and "Ready to go in the line" and "Aren't you ready yet?", she finally gave in. We walked up to the line and I grabbed a salad, my favorite lunch food. No, I'm not a vegetarian. I just love salad. Pam always calls me a rabbit for eating so much of it. I told her to hurry up, because there was something that I had to tell her. I paid the dollar for my salad and then we went back to our seats. I opened the container and put on some dressing.
"Hey, Pam, I'm gay," I said.
She did a double check, "What? Did you just say that you're gay?"
"Sure did," I replied with a smile.
She questioned, "Really? How come you didn't tell me before?"
"I was scared of what you might say, but I'm not scared anymore," I said.
She replied, "Well, boy I've got one hell of a surprise for you."
I raised a suspicious eyebrow at her, "What do you mean?"
"Well, don't tell anyone this because he's in the closet, but see Evan over there? Evan Landis? He's gay and in an relationship with Andy Forrester," as she pointed them out.
"Really? That's cool! I'll have to talk to them about stuff sometime. Do you have Evan's number?"
"Sure do," she said, and then she got out a piece of paper to write it on.
She wrote the number out, tore out the piece of paper, folded it, and handed it to me. I put it in my pocket, and proceeded to eat my salad.
"So, when did you know that you were gay?" she asked.
"A year ago, this day," I replied.
"Really," she said, with a spark of interest, "That's cool!"
Five more periods passed and I boarded the bus to go home. Ahh, good ol' bus eighteen. I've been riding this bus for years. Routine- you can't escape it. After the long and strenuous half hour ride, I got home and hurried inside as fast as I could. I couldn't wait to call Evan. I dialed his number and he picked up.
"Evan? Is that you?"
"Yeah, who is this?"
"Umm.. This is Phil, from your lunch class and study hall. I think we met at a party before. Anyway, I have a question for ya."
"Shoot. What is it?"
"Well, Pam told me today that you're gay." He gasped when I said this, "Don't worry, I am too. I understand that you're in a relationship with Andy too. You're a lucky guy, you know."
"I've got something interesting to tell you then."
"What?"
"I have a friend who is gay also, and I think he might be single."
"Who is that?"
"Kevin Butcher, that kid in Geometry with you. You know him? Really cute freckles, dusty blonde hair?"
"Yup, I know him. He's gay? Aww! That cutie!"
"You want his number? I think he's home. He rides my bus."
"Sure, what is it?"
He told me the number, and I told him goodbye. I proceeded to hang up and then I dialed Kevin's number quickly. His mother picked up.
"Mrs. Butcher? Is Kevin there?"
"Yes, I'll go get him. May I ask who is calling?"
"This is Phil. Phil Jacobs from school."
"Okay, I'll go get him. Hold on, please."
There was a pause, and then some muffled noises as se held her hand over the receiver while talking to Kevin.
"Hello?"
"Hi, Kevin?"
"Yes, this is him."
"This is Phil Jacobs. Umm... I have something to ask you. You're gay right?"
"Who told you that?" He asked, sounding a bit alarmed.
"Evan did after we talked about him being gay."
"Really? How did you know that Evan was gay?"
"One of his friends, Pam, is also one of my friends and she told me. Evan told me to call you because I'm gay too and he thought that you're single. Did you get all that?"
"Yeah, but I'm not single."
"You aren't?" I asked, in dismay.
"Nope. I'm going out with Eddie Valentino."
This was getting confusing. I was a little fed up, while at the same time depressed. This changed after about thirty more seconds?
"But, I do know someone who IS single, and IS interested in you," He said.
"Really?" I said, extremely excited.
"Yes, he's in your English class. His name is Joey Kline."
"I know him. He's that cute short kid with black hair and really cute dimples when he smiles, right?"
"Yep, that's him, and that's not all. He's like, obsessed with you. He talks about you morning, noon, and night. He always says how cute you are, how much he wants you to be gay, and how cute he thinks your little whiskers above your upper lip are."
I flipped out.
"REALLY?!" I screamed, in exclamation.
"Yeah, and he's coming over to my house tonight, along with my boyfriend. I'm having a sleepover. Do you wanna' come over?"
Things worked out too easily. Irony is simple and blunt, wouldn't you agree? They say that everyone knows each other through seven people. I found mine through three. Are the statistics wrong? Am I outdoing the numbers? Not exactly. Anyway, I'll take this moment to introduce myself. My name is Phil Jacobs. I'm five-foot seven and I have black hair. Like Kevin said, I have little black whiskers above my upper lip and I have green eyes. I'm especially attracted to guys with cute dimples my biggest turn-on is if a guy has a cute face. Phil gave me Joey's number and I hung up. I have to say that I was so excited I could cry.
I tried to dial Joey's number, but I kept screwing up.
Calm down, Phil, I thought to myself. That wasn't so easy. I screwed up another three times before getting it right. One, two, three rings and a click.
"Hello?" I heard a boyish voice speak up.
"Is this Joey?"
"Yeah, who is this?"
"You had better sit down first," I told him.
"I am. Now tell me who you are," he demanded.
"This is Phil Jacobs."
He was so startled delete comma that he dropped his phone. After retrieving it, I heard him talk once again,
"Wait, I think I know why you're calling!"
I interrupted him. "I'm gay."
"Oh my God, that's exactly what I thought. I can't breathe. I am so surprised and anxious and happy and now I'm babbling." His little voice sounded so cute.
"I'm going to Kevin's house tonight," I told him.
"Really? I can't wait!"
I said, "First, I have a question. I know this is really quick, but I know enough about you to ask. Will you be my boyfriend?"
It took him less than one second for him to reply, and I'm guessing that you can guess what his answer was. You see, humans all think in one way, positively. And by the way- yes, you are right.
"YES!" He exclaimed. I heard him start to sob and shed joyous tears, "I'm so happy, I can't sit down."
"Well, I'll see you over at Kevin's house tonight, okay?"
"Yes, like I said, I can't wait."
"Bye," I said.
He said, "Goodbye," then hung up.
I packed my things and waited for my mom to get home so she could drive me over to Kevin's house.
