Snowy Day by J. Paige
Nicky Byrne of Westlife was just drifting off to sleep when he felt the bus lurch to a stop. He scampered out of his warm bunk to find his other four band members standing in the tiny hallway.
"What happened?" Kian Egan asked.
"The bus stopped!" Bryan McFadden said cheerfully. Shane Filan shot him a weird look before advancing into the dining area of the tour bus on to where the driver was. Nicky followed, motioning for the others to do the same. They found the bus door open, and the driver nowhere to be found. Mark Feehly, the only one wearing shoes, stepped off the bus to find the driver. Nicky stood in the doorway and looked out. It had started to snow without them knowing it, and soon it would get very cold. He felt a body slide up next to him, and he smiled as Shane put an arm around his shoulders.
"I hope nothing's wrong with the bus. It's gonna get really cold, really fast." Nicky nodded, showing that he realized that. The two stood in the doorway with Kian and Bryan behind them, looking out at the snow. After a few tense moments, Mark came back to the door of the bus. He climbed the steps to the bus and they all moved aside to let him in.
"Well," he started, closing the door. "There's good news and there's bad news..."
"Bad first." Bryan said, sitting on a bench near the door. The others stayed standing, and Shane still had his arm around Nicky.
"The bus has broken down." Before going further, he put his hands up to stop them from talking. "I don't know what the problem is. Todd didn't say." Todd was the bus driver. "The good news is that there's a motel nearby. He went aside to see if there's a car or something to pick us up and drive us there."
"Why can't we just walk?" Nicky asked.
"It's too far." Bryan suggested.
"Todd's walking." Nicky countered.
"Yeah, but we can't afford to get sick walking in the snow," Shane explained. "It would cost too much money if we had to cancel a show or something."
"We'll probably have to cancel anyway, if we're stuck out here in the middle of nowhere," Kian said quietly. That quieted them all for a moment until Mark spoke again.
"We'd better go get some stuff together; we don't know how long we'll be at this place." They all nodded and went to their separate bunks to get clothes and other necessities.
Nicky was just throwing a pair of jeans into his duffle bag when he felt the curtain to his bunk opening. It was Shane.
"Hey mate," Shane said. "You got any clean socks I can wear?" Nicky laughed. He threw a pair of gym socks at Shane, hitting him right on the nose.
"Wanker," Shane laughed.
"You know it!" Nicky continued. Still giggling, he said, "You better not stretch them out with those big feet of yours!" Shane was about to make a rude comment when Mark called them from the front of the bus. They fathered up their bags and met the other three in the front of the bus.
"Car's here," Kian said. They nodded and followed him outside. Already, it was very cold. Nicky shivered as they got into the small car Todd had driven over. Mark took the front seat, and the others all squished into the back. They arrived at the motel shortly and went inside to warm up.
"Management has been contacted and they'll be out here when they can," Todd told them as they were standing around the lobby. "Not only are there bus problems, but a huge storm is coming. So it's kind of lucky that we broke down when and where we did. Some motel employees are going to go back to the bus with me and we'll tow it back here. Meanwhile, here are your room keys." He reached into his pocket and pulled out four card keys. "I know there are only four rooms, but I'd be willing to share with one of you if four of you want your own rooms. I've got my key here." He pulled out another key.
"Nah, Nix and I will share," Shane said, taking a key. "That's the usual arrangement when there aren't enough rooms." Todd nodded and handed out the other keys.
"Why don't we plan to meet in an hour or so," Bryan suggested. "My room okay?" The others agreed.
"And if you need anything, let me know!" Todd said. They all got into the elevator and found their way to their rooms.
Shane opened the door to his and Nicky's room. They walked in and looked around. It wasn't as fancy as they were used to, but it was clean and warm.
"I get the right side!" Shane called as he began putting his clothes into one of the cabinets.
"Huh?" Nicky called back from the bathroom where he was checking out the freebies.
"Of the bed," Shane said as Nicky came back into view. There was only one bed in the room, but it was of a fair size, and it would hold them.
"Oh, yeah. That's cool," Nicky said as he sprawled out across the entire bed. He was very tired, and he was quite looking forward to getting back to the nap he'd been interrupted from on the bus. Just when his eyes closed, he felt a weight on the bed and then a warm body right next to him. He slid over just a bit, and he felt Shane relax against him. Shane's arm crept protectively across Nicky's chest and stayed there, holding him. Nicky smiled and fell asleep.
Nicky was torn from the depths of sleep by a knock on the door. He started to move, but then found that he couldn't. He looked down and saw that Shane had him captured. He smiled and put a hand to Shane's head. He stroked Shane's hair, temporarily forgetting that someone was at the door. He struggled to fight the feelings that were rising in him. As much as he loved Shane, he knew that Shane was his best friend, and would only love him in that manner. He slid his hand down Shane's face and stopped, watching him sleep. Then an idea came to him and he grinned. He began to tickle Shane and he giggled when the younger man squirmed in his sleep.
Shane's eyes flew open, and he tried to keep Nicky from tickling him. When that didn't work, he decided to fight back. They were rolling around on the bed and laughing when they heard a voice from outside the door.
"Shane? Nicky? You two all right in there?" For some reason, they found that hilarious and they began laughing again. Shane got up to get the door, trying to hold his laughter in. The sight that greeted him when he opened the door was a mildly angry, somewhat worried-looking Kian, with his hand posed to knock.
"Come on in," Shane said breathlessly. Kian put his hand down and cautiously stepped inside. He warily looked from Shane, standing next to him, to Nicky, who was sitting on the bed, hair a mess and clothes rumpled. The comforter was sliding to the floor and the pillows were at the foot of the bed.
"Did I interrupt something?" Kian asked, glancing at Shane's half-buttoned shirt. He, Bryan, and Mark had their theories and speculations on how deep the "Shnicky" relationship really was, but they never mentioned anything of the sort to either one of them.
"Nah, we were just messin' around on the bed," Shane said, winking at Nicky. Kian's eyebrows rose and Shane and Nicky burst out laughing.
"I'll, uh, just leave you be then. Uh, meet us in Bry's room when you're ready. Bye." And then he was out the door.
"What was that about?" Shane asked, walking back to Nicky. Nicky shrugged. "Ki made it sound like we were screwing or something." Nicky laughed casually.
"Why on earth would we be doing anything other than sleeping?" He really didn't want to continue the conversation.
"When people want to believe something, they use everything they see to rationalize it." Shane was now sitting on the bed next to Nicky.
"And what exactly does he want to believe?" Nicky asked softly, gazing into Shane's eyes. Shane crept closer.
"This," he said, and he captured Nicky's lips with his own.
Nicky recovered from the shock of feeling Shane kissing him quickly enough to kiss him back. Nicky ran his tongue along Shane's lips and felt them open. While their tongues danced, Nicky slid his arm around Shane's waist and held him closer. Shane broke the kiss and leaned his forehead against Nicky's.
"You don't know how long I've wanted to do that," Shane whispered breathlessly. Nicky smiled.
"Why didn't you do it until now?" Nicky asked. Shane ran his hand along Nicky's face and pulled his chin up to look at him. He shrugged.
"I was afraid of what your reaction would be." He grinned. "But if I'd known it'd be like that, I'd have done it much sooner!" Nicky kissed Shane lightly on the lips before speaking.
"Thank you," he said softly.
"For what?"
"For trusting me enough to be able to do that." He ran his fingers through Shane's hair.
"I trust you with my life, Nicky." They kissed again, with more passionate this time.
After five minutes of blissful kissing, they decided it was time to go to Bryan's room to see what the others were up to. Shane was changing his shirt, as it had gotten a bit wrinkled during his nap and the activities that followed.
"Shane?" Nicky asked as he watched Shane change.
"Yeah?" Came the muffled reply from under the clean shirt.
"What, eh, are you?" The shirt was now on properly, and Shane could be understood.
"You mean..." He sat on the floor next to where Nicky was sitting.
"Yeah. I'm bi. You all know that. How about you?" Shane reached over and grabbed Nicky's hand, holding it in his own.
"I'm gay. Completely. Now, I never told you, because I wasn't sure myself. But I'm comfortable with it now, and I'm happy to share that with you." Nicky pulled Shane's hand up to his mouth and kissed it.
"Thank you for telling me. But let's not tell the guys about us just yet. I want to have you all to myself for a while without any questions."
"That sounds good," Shane agreed.
"Are you going to tell them about you?" Nicky asked. Shane shook his head.
"I don't think I'm ready for that yet."
"When you are ready, you know I'll be there to support you." They kissed again and got up to go to Bryan's room. They dropped hands as they stepped out the door. It was time to see what was going on.
