Jack's Dialogue

I was unwillingly ripped away from a really good dream that was now slipping away from me, I turned my head and looked up at the ceiling wondering where I was; it took a few seconds for me to remember that I was laying on Jason's floor. I looked over at Jason, he was facing me with his mouth lolled open and he was breathing quietly... makes a change from his usual snores. My thoughts trailed off to what we'd end up doing today, and onto Miss Jameson, she was my sports ed' teacher... and such a fittie.

"Err. What are you doing?"

I was startled, I hadn't really realised I was still glaring right at Jason while I was thinking. I must have freaked him out a bit. I shook my head at him.

"Sorry," I laughed "I was just thinking"

"About what?" Jason replied suspiciously.

"About what's gonna happen today."

"Well you can get up and dressed to start with, do you make a habit of being half naked in other people's houses?" Jason said jokingly.

"Nahh, just yours, it's like my second home here. You don't care about me sleeping like this anyway, do you?" I replied, this was one of my subtle gay hints.

"Nope, I was kidding aha" Jason replied quickly.

"Well, I'll let you tart yourself up. I'm going to go get changed in the bathroom." I said as I got up from under the covers. I bent over my bag again to get my clothes and toothbrush. As I stood up again, I turned around to see if Jason was making a repeat performance of looking at my bum.

Jason was lying in his bed checking his phone. Maybe I was mistaken last night; maybe he wasn't looking at me at all. I left the room and got dressed in the bathroom, I'd chosen to wear a tight v- neck t-shirt and a pair of denim shorts. After I'd dressed and was about to brush my teeth, there was a knock on the door and Jason walked in, he usually does this, even if I'm not fully dressed, he doesn't seem to care and usually heads straight for the sink to brush his teeth. Today was no different, we both brushed our teeth, and I laughed again at his weird 'teeth-brushing' position.

We both went downstairs afterwards, I slumped in an armchair and turned the TV on, a repeat of last night's Britain's Got Talent was on and (for once) I decided to watch it. Justin was in the kitchen bustling around finding the things he needed to make breakfast. I noticed he was singing, but it was muffled through the closed door. I turned down the TV and snuck over to the kitchen door. I had intended to burst in and make fun of his singing, I'd never heard him before and he didn't seem like the kind of guy that would be particularly good. I opened the door a tiny amount. I was in shock; I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

" - you move so fast, makes me feel lazy... and let's, joined forces.. We've got our guns and horses, I know you've be burnt.. But every fire is a lesson learned -"

He was amazing! He had a breathy sort of singing voice that could hit higher notes really well, and he hit every note perfectly. I was dumbstruck. I stepped into the kitchen after he had finished the chorus, Jason noticed and stopped immediately and his face went bright red. I couldn't help but think that this was a little bit cute. I didn't want to make out that I'd heard him singing. So I just asked: "What are you making?"

"Oh... Erm... Scrambled eggs on toast. Is that alright?" He replied, still scarlet in the face from being walked in on while he was singing.

I went and sat back in the sitting room, chuckling to myself lightly, I couldn't see why he was so embarrassed, if I had a voice like that; I'd flaunt it. 10 minutes later, Jason walked back in and put our food on the table. We tucked into it, even though it was only scrambled eggs and toast, it was obvious that Jason had the same knack for cooking that his mum had; the eggs were perfect and the toast, as far as toast goes, was brilliant, and it was laid out on the plate as if we were in a restaurant.

After we'd finished, Jason's mum came down from upstairs and walked in the room in a dressing gown and slippers. She yawned something that sounded like 'good morning' and waddled off into the kitchen.

"I think we should take my dog out for a walk today, it's decent weather and I've missed walking through the fields." I said to Jason as he was picking up our plates.

"Yeah why not, fresh air should be able to clear my mind a bit" he replied.

So after he'd finished clearing up in the kitchen, we both went upstairs and tidied his room from last night's mess. Afterwards, I grabbed my bag and headed downstairs to get my black plimsolls on. I poked my head through the sitting room door and said goodbye and thank you to Jason's mum. I went out the front door and waited for Jason outside. After about 5 minutes, I heard Jason say bye to his mum and came to join me.

"You took your time!" I exclaimed as he shut the front door behind him.

"Yeah, sorry I was, erm, just sorting my bed sheets out." He replied.

"Took you long enough, we might as well head over to mine now then" I said. Jason seemed a bit red in the face when he'd come down from his room, I wondered why.

Jason's Dialogue

Jack grabbed his bag and charged down the stairs. I looked at the floor; a piece of paper was on the floor where his bag had been. I picked it up, it looked like it had been torn from a school book, it read: 'Thanks for last night Jack, you're amazing. Love Diana xxx'.

My heart sunk a little, usually Jack tells me about the girls he's done stuff with, I knew he wasn't a virgin, but I also knew that he hadn't had sex with anybody since he was 14 when he'd lost his virginity to a girl in the year above. I felt like a little bit of our trust had just been thrown out the window; he didn't even tell me that he'd done stuff with Diana. Diana Smith was a girl that wasn't in either of our classes, she had red hair and was quite tall, and I never had anything against her, but I never liked the way she acted; as if she owned the school.

The other reason my heart had sunk was that he'd had sex with someone else, I know he's straight and that I have no chance of ever doing anything with him, but it still cuts you up a little bit when you know that the person you have strong feelings for has had sex or fooled around with someone else. I decided to keep this note with me; I tucked it in my pocket. 'I might ask Jack about it later' I thought to myself.

I hurried back downstairs, said goodbye to my mum and stepped outside. I felt the summer sun warm my skin. I was glad that I'd put on a pair of khaki shorts and a dark green v-neck top. Jack and I looked quite similar now; we could have passed as twins. Jack scolded me for taking too long and then we walked to his house. We approached his front door by walking over the gravel of his driveway.

The Dawn family house was huge... well it was huge compared to my house; it had 4 bedrooms, 2 living rooms, an office in the attic along with a games room just beside it. Their house was also nicely decorated, Jack's mum, Sarah had a keen eye for interior design, the place had a very countryside theme to it with 3 log fires around the house, every other room had a decorative painting and several expensive-looking ornaments could be seen from any angle of the house, except maybe if you'd stuck your head down the toilet... but even then you might find a turd made out glitter or something, I envied their wealth.

I stood in the entrance of Jack's house, his parents and little brother weren't home. Jack shot upstairs to put his bag in his room and to find the dog's leash. Jasper the Border collie came bounding towards me from the living room across the way. He was such an energetic dog considering he was 13 years old. I played with him for a while, whilst Jack was still trying to find his leash. A few minutes later, Jack came bustling into the room, put the leash on Jasper and we walked out the front door. As it was a messy path, we both put on wellies and headed off to a nearby field. The area we lived in was rural, so there were a lot of fields and forested areas, perfect for dog walking, or any walking for that matter.

After we climbed over the first fence into a field we started talking about random things such as, teachers, exams, a couple of our friends and our families. Soon we came to the edge of the woods. We entered and walked on for a while before coming to a stop at a river. Jasper, who was no longer on his leash, darted towards the water to drink and swim. I sat down on a fallen tree, Jack followed suit by sitting on a huge branch opposite. I decided would be the best time to ask Jack about Diana.

"So... been up to anything interesting recently?" I asked politely.

"Not really, the same old boring stuff. Why'd you ask?" Jack replied.

"Oh, that's odd; I would have thought there'd be something you'd want to update me on?"

"Like what?" Jack said, sounding confused.

"Oh, nothing really, been getting up to much with Diana at all?"

"Wha-? Ohh!" Jack said, suddenly realising "That was nothing."

"Sex means nothing to you?" I said quite sternly.

"What are you talking about?"

I pulled out the note and threw it over to him; he picked it up, read it and laughed.

"No, seriously, it WAS nothing. Nothing that you think it is anyway," His laughing was starting to make me angry. "I was helping her with her Photography coursework; I did photography last year so I said I'd help her out, so she came round to mine on Thursday. I didn't have sex with her Jason!"

"But-"

"And even if I did," Jack started "it wouldn't be any your business anyway!"

"But we're best mates Jack! We tell each other about this sort of thing; you obviously don't trust me enough to tell me anything." I shouted at him.

"Pfft, you're saying I don't trust you?" He retorted "YOU don't even trust me enough to confide in me and tell me that you're gay!"

I stood there, stunned. How could he know? Is it that obvious? Who else knew? All these questions swam through my head. Jack must have noticed that he'd probably gone too far, and walked over to me. He sat down next to me and put his arm around my shoulders.

"It's okay, you know." He said calmly "Don't worry about other people knowing, I only know that you are because I know you too well." I wasn't sure if these words comforted me or made me feel more vulnerable. What if he knew me so well that he knew I was near enough in love with him?

"I'm not." I tried to deny it, but I knew it was no use.

Jack took my hand and told me to look at him, shocked by this; I looked up into his deep brown, concerned eyes.

Jack's Dialogue

I was looking into Jason's vivid green eyes with a mixture of emotions bubbling inside me. Regret, worry and concern were just a few.

"I've known for a while Jason, I'm certain no one else does. You open up to me so I know how you're feeling most of the time; this whole situation with Alice confirmed it for me. It's nothing to be ashamed of, Jason. You've got nothing to be afraid of."

"Who says I'm afraid!" Jason said sternly.

"Jason! I know you! You have absolutely nothing to be afraid of, it's not like you've done something wrong, I know that you probably didn't CHOOSE to be gay, like I said last night, I will ALWAYS be there for you to talk to if you need me."

I looked down at the floor and felt Jason's hand slip away from mine. I heard him sniff; I looked up and saw that he was crying, I put my arm around him again. I'd never seen Jason cry before and I didn't know what to do to comfort him.

"I-it's so d-difficult." Jason sobbed "I c-can't tell anyone about any of it, they'd j-just turn their b- backs on me!"

"Don't be so bloody ridiculous!" I said cheerily and I got up and looked him full in the face. "You've got a huge support network out there that wouldn't dream of turning their backs on you. Your mum, our group at school, I don't know about your brother and sisters, but I'm sure they'd be supportive, and your dad!"

"Ha! My dad would disown me as soon as he heard about it, my sisters and brother wouldn't be able to look at me the same way either!" Jason shouted "They're the biggest bunch of homophobes you could come across!"

"Even if that is true, you'll always have me to support you" I smiled at him "and that killer voice of yours!"

"What?" Jason shot back.

"This morning, I heard you in the kitchen... that was fucking amazing!"

"Is that some kind of joke?"

"No, seriously, you're brilliant! Don't get used to hearing me say it though. This is a special circumstance."

Jason laughed; it was good to see him even a little bit happy. I smiled. But Jason's laugh didn't last longer than a second. He went back to looking glum almost straight away.

"I don't know what I'm gonna do." He said sadly.

"What do you mean?" I asked.

"I don't know what I'm going to do about Alice, how am I gonna break up with her? I can't just be like 'oh how was your weekend?, mine was okay, oh by the way I'm a raging homosexual'" Both of us laughed at this.

"Well just try and explain to her that you don't feel the spark with her, and that you've been trying to feel the same way for her as she feels for you, but it just won't work... something like that?" I suggested.

Jason wiped his eyes and looked up at me.

"Thank you." He said.

I looked into his face and a curious feeling shot through me. It wasn't like love or attraction or anything like that. It was a feeling of caring, I realised how much I really care for this guy in front of me that was going through hell in his mind. I wasn't lying when I said I'd always be there, because I would be.

Jason's Dialogue

That was it. I was out. I felt relief flood over me, I had someone I could finally be totally open with, well not totally open with, that would mean admitting to him that I fancied the pants off him.

I had looked away from Jack; he had a weird curious look on his face that I didn't want to see.

"So you're not all worried that I'm gonna jump on you and start humping your leg or something?" I said jokingly.

"Listen, Jase," He only usually called me 'Jase' when he was trying to be deathly serious "this changes nothing between us, nothing at all!"

"I was kidding" I laughed half-heartedly.

"I'm not... all this means is that you have an excuse not to take part in the banter about girls" he said a bit cheerier.

"You're sure nothing else is gonna change?" I asked. I was worried that he wouldn't want to stay round at mine any more.

Jack punched me on the arm.

"Hey! What the fuck was that for!!?" I shouted at him.

"Did you not listen to a word I've said?" Jack said frowning "I told you, I've known for ages now, if anything changes, it's because you make it that way. The only difference now is that you know that I know about it."

"I suppose," I said "you didn't need to bloody hit me though!"

"You paid attention though" Jack said smugly, he gave me a cheery wink and turned to call his dog.

I was so happy that my best friend was one of the rare people in the area that didn't have a hint of homophobia about them.

The rest of the walk was great. We chatted and laughed about different things, even joked about the way I ended up coming out to him. It wasn't until we got back to his house that my good mood plummeted back down into the murky depths of worry. Alice had just text me.

I read the text a couple of times before the gloom set in. The text read: 'Where are you? Im at ur house with ur mum. Ly xxx'

I showed Jack the phone; he read the text and looked up at me.

"I think you should get it over with." he said. Even though I really didn't want to do this today, something about Jack telling me to do it motivated me to get it done. I got up from his leather sofa and walked out into the entrance and put my shoes back on. I was trying to play the scene out in my head but each scenario ended with her being angry or in tears.

Just as I was leaving, Jacks parents were arriving in their 4x4 Mercedes, we waved at each other as I walked back towards my house. The walk home from Jacks had always seemed so short before because I was usually reflecting on the good day I'd usually had, but today it seemed to go on for hours as I was wallowing in the fear of what I had to do. I'd been with Alice for almost 4 months, we'd made out with each other I'd given her what Jack called 'Hand Service' a few times too, I did feel intimate with her and everything, but I knew it just wasn't right. Recently I'd been trying to avoid her a bit, which proved difficult considering she was in 2 of the 3 lessons I was taking.

I walked up to my house and looked at myself in the reflection in the glass on the door; I looked okay, not good, not bad. I took a deep breath and opened the door with my keys. As soon as I walked in Alice leaped onto me and kissed me as passionately as she could, I had to push her off me gently.

"What?" She said, staring at me with her ocean blue eyes.

She was a beautiful girl, I couldn't deny that, and I hated myself for not being straight sometimes because I couldn't help feeling that I was so lucky to be with her. She had waist-length, chestnut brown, shiny hair and beautiful wide eyes. She was always well dressed; today she'd dressed in dark blue designer summer dress and a necklace with the word 'Hope' in the middle. She was a little bit shorter than me and she had an amazingly dazzling smile.

"Can we talk outside?" I asked, trying to sound casual.

"Yeah, sure." She replied with a smile that was slightly faltered.

I wished she wouldn't be so pleasant. It would have been so much easier if she had been angry or bitchy. We stepped out of my front door and walked towards the end of my garden. Alice tried to hold my hand, but I just let mine lay limp. We got to my garden gate before she spoke.

"Jason, seriously... what's up?" she said, she was frowning a little now.

I took in a deep breath and said "I think we should... stop it here."

She looked confused.

"Stop what?" she said a little bit concerned.

"Us. We can't see each other like this anymore"

"What... why?" she said with tears starting to fill her eyes.

"I've been trying to feel the spark between us for a while now, but it's just not there"

"What are you t-talking about? W-we've done loads together a-and now you're t-telling me you didn't feel a thing for me?!" the tears were now turning to tears of rage. I stood there silent. I didn't know what to say so I just nodded.

"YOU FUCKING TWAT JASON!" she screamed at me. She slapped me round the face, scratching my cheek with her nails, it felt like it cut deep and I felt a warm dripping from my face.

"I'm sorry! I tried to make it work between us. I wanted it to, but I couldn't!" I tried to explain.

"OH SAVE IT! WHO'S THE OTHER GIRL THEN?! ..."

"What?" I said, shocked. She seriously thought there was another girl!

"I'M NOT A FUCKING IDIOT, JASON!" she took a deep breath, closed her eyes and tried to calm herself. She opened her eyes again, looked directly at me and said "You are so going to regret this, I wouldn't bother trying to hang about with the group anymore, I'm going to tell them how much of a cheating bastard you are!"

And with that, she pushed me and stormed out of my garden and down the road.

Well, that was over quickly enough. I didn't like how it ended, but at least that was another load off my mind now. I felt another wave of relief which was soon taken over by dread... she'd said not to bother trying to hang with the group now, we were in the same friendship group at school, I knew all of them would believe Alice's story and turn against me. Now I just felt lonely. I stood there in the semi-darkness staring over at the distant woods feeling so lonely. It seemed there was nobody there for me. I walked back inside ignoring the tears running down my face, stinging the scratches on my cheeks.

"You alright hun'?" my mum said as I walked in.

Well, Jason's out to Jack and Alice has promised hell. Thank you to everyone that emailed me, it was all kind words. It's good to know that some of you enjoy what I've written. I had one or two people from across the pond telling me that they didn't quite understand some of the vocab I used. If you're confused about any of it, just email me and ask :) I don't really want to stop the flow of the story to translate into American terms, sorry :)

Hit me up at: someone.like.you5704@gmail.com with your comments and stuff :) Cheers Justin.
