Girl sleeping
(Picks up the day after `More than Hurt Feelings')
When Sarah's mom came back, she found the girls asleep next to each other. She closed the door and crossed back over to the nurse's station, setting Allison's chart down so she could make some notes.
Handing it to the nurse on duty when she was done, "Any instructions, Dr. Black?"
"No pain meds unless Allison asks for them, Carol. Sarah is sleeping in the bed next to her and they should be good `til morning. Keep an eye on the IV and take Allison's blood pressure every 4 hours, but otherwise, leave them alone."
"No problem, Doctor. See you in the morning."
"Thanks, Carol."
The nurses padded in to check Allison's IV and change it when it got low. They woke her up to take her blood pressure. It was a quiet night.
The next morning, Sarah's mom was about to shake her shoulder when Sarah spoke up, "I'm awake, Mom."
"Did you get much sleep, Honey?"
"Some. I was so sensitized to Allison that I woke up whenever she moved. I heard the nurses when they came in and when the Code Blue alarm sounded."
"That's too bad. You can nap while Allison has her tests done. I'm taking you home for awhile this afternoon."
"Awww, Mom."
"No arguments. You have to take care of yourself. I called Rikki and she will sit with Allison while you get some rest. You both had a stressful day and the physical toll on your body can get out of hand if you don't pay attention."
"I guess."
"You can come back later. I'm having a cot put in here for you. I think you both would sleep better with a little more space."
"Thanks, Mom."
Allison started, tried to sit up, and bumped her cast, "Damn, Munchkin. What did you do to my leg?"
Sarah's mom interjected, "Good morning, Ally. Do you know where you are?"
Allison looked around and took in the bed, the cast, the room, "Oh-my-god, the game...the injury...the operation! I'm in the hospital." She looked around again, " `Morning, Dr. Black...Munchkin. Am I gonna live?"
"Yes, I think we can pretty much guarantee that, Sunshine."
"How bad was the damage?"
"Not as bad as we thought. We fixed the tear and made sure everything else was OK. Because the tear was so small, we might, and I emphasize might, be looking at 6-9 months to rehab, instead of 9-12."
"Yipeeee!" Allison tried to wave her arms, bumped her cast again, and flinched instead, "Ow."
"You need to be careful for a few days."
"I'm learning."
"Need some aspirin?"
"No, I'm good."
"Don't be a hero. If you're in pain, ask for help. I'll leave an OK for a couple of Tylenol. Just ask the nurse if you start to hurt."
"I will."
A nurse's assistant came in while they were talking and set a shallow basin down on the table. Sarah's mom acted like a light bulb had just lit up over her head, "Is it Saturday?"
"Why, yes, Mom. I believe it is."
"Then it's a special day."
The nurse was getting into the spirit, "How special is it, Dr. Black?"
"It's sponge bath day!"
Allison held her chin as if she was considering whether or not this was a good thing. "I can get into that." Sarah slid off the bed and the nurse moved the table over. Allison skinned off her gown and waited.
Sarah's mom warned, "Don't try to help, let Debbie do the work. We want to be sure we don't compromise your IV or knock your cast around."
"OK, Dr. Black." Allison laid there and allowed Debbie to manipulate her and help her when she had to roll to one side or the other. When Debbie was finished, Allison put on a new gown and waited.
Two orderlies came in with a gurney as the nurse's assistant left. Sarah's mom turned to Allison, "Time for tests."
"What tests?"
"We want to do another MRI to make sure things are OK in that precious knee of yours. We might even take some blood and poke around to satisfy ourselves that you're ready to start PT."
"PT?"
"Physical Therapy."
Sarah was standing next to Allison's bed, "Can Sarah go with me?"
"Not this time, Honey." Allison started to squeeze Sarah's hand.
"Why not?" The pressure on Sarah's hand started to hurt.
"She didn't have as good a night as you did and I want her to rest while you are having your tests done."
Allison started to cry, "I don't want to go alone."
Sarah reached across and grabbed Allison's ear just as Rikki came in, "Listen to me, Cha'trez. I will be here when you get back. Rikki will go with you, to keep you company."
Allison looked her lover in the eye and sniffled, "OK. Hey, Rik."
"Morning, Sunshine. Ready to face the world?"
"I guess?"
Sarah's mom took Allison's chin and turned her head, "Ally, I promise you that Sarah will be here when you get back and probably your parents too. I know you're scared and we won't let you go through this alone. OK?"
Allison was a little more positive, "OK." They shifted her to the gurney and wheeled her out. Rikki held Allison's hand as they went down the corridor.
When they got back to the room, Allison saw Sarah was asleep on a cot next to her bed, "Shhhh. Let her sleep." They got her resituated on the bed and checked her IV. Rikki sat next to the bed and regaled Allison with what happened at the game after she was injured. The nurse brought in a Tylenol for Allison to take.
They were chatting when Sarah stretched and Allison's parents came in, along with Sarah's mom. "`Mornin, Mom and Dad. How were the tests, Dr. Black?"
"Good morning, Honey. Sleep well?"
Allison glanced over at Sarah, "Apparently better than the munchkin did."
Sarah interjected sleepily, "You try to sleep next to someone coming off an adrenaline high at the same time you are. I woke up every time you moved, a nurse came in, an alarm sounded, anything."
Sarah's mom interjected, "And that's why I'm taking her home this afternoon; to eat, shower, and get another nap."
"You are coming back?"
Sarah looked at her mom, "Ask her."
"If I think she's gotten some rest, yes. Now, would you like to hear your test results?"
"Yes, please."
"The MRI showed that we got the tear and everything else is OK. Your blood work is normal. I've scheduled Physical Therapy to come in for a preliminary consultation."
Allison's mom sighed, "That's good news. What is Physical Therapy going to do?"
"They're going to evaluate Allison's flexibility and do a fit for crutches. As soon as she can get around without pain, we're going to kick her out. There are really sick people who could use the bed." Allison couldn't see Sarah's mom smile and wink at her parents.
Sarah piped up, "Mom! That's not nice."
"Just kidding. We have to fit Allison for a walking cast, yet. She'll be with us for a few days. I promise."
Allison's mom pulled out some clothes, "Feel like slipping into something normal?"
Smiling for the first time in awhile, "Did you bring the burgundy?"
"Of course." They helped Allison slip on a pair of shorts. Sarah's mom disconnected the IV long enough to pull a T-shirt over her head. Resituated on the bed, "Feel better?"
"Much. I'm hungry."
"The lunch cart should be by soon. Since Rikki and your parents are here, I'm going to take Sarah home and be back to see you later.
Sarah leaned over and kissed Allison. "I'll be back after dinner, Cha'trez. Maybe we can get started on homework?"
Allison sniffed, "I guess. See `ya later."
Sarah was quiet on the way home. She got out in the driveway and leaned in the kiss her mom. "Get some rest, Darling. I'll be home for dinner. I expect to find dirty lunch dishes, wet towels, and you in bed when I return. We'll go back to the hospital after that. OK?"
"No problem, Mom. If you don't find me in bed asleep, I'm probably in the Jacuzzi."
Sarah's mom drove over to her office to see a patient that couldn't be rescheduled and work on some patient files. She called the hospital to check on Allison before returning home. Putting her bag down beside the hall table, Sarah's mom looked in the kitchen. As she expected, there was a dirty plate and milk glass in the sink. She padded upstairs, found a wet towel on the hamper in the bathroom, and Sarah buried beneath the covers on her bed.
Sarah's mom returned to the kitchen and started dinner. Sitting on the couch, she sorted through the mail and watched the local news. A few minutes before everything was ready, she went upstairs and sat on the edge of Sarah's bed, "Honey, it's time to wake up."
