(I'm sorry if this is a darker story. It's where I am at right now. My thanks to Barry for the help)

Ginny and Rikki were walking with Lauren in the park, each one holding a hand. They were enjoying the late afternoon breeze and sun. A couple of older ladies passed them going the other direction when Rikki heard one the ladies comment.

"Excuse me, Ma'am. If you have a question, please feel free to ask. We have nothing to hide."

The older of the two ladies turned, "We were admiring the little girl and wondering if you two were sisters, friends, or what?"

Rikki continued, "The answer to your question is `or what'. My name is Rikki Laveque and this is my partner, Jennifer Browning and her daughter, Lauren. We've been together almost 2 years now."

"That's too bad. Such a beautiful baby and she will end up confused when she grows up."

"Why should she be confused?"

"Two mothers and no father, of course."

"You couldn't be more wrong. Ginny is Mom and I'm Aunt Rikki. The biological father visits occasionally. My father is a bastard and we won't talk about him. Ginny's father is deployed in Iraq, but comes home when he can. And the fathers of our two best friends serve as more than adequate male role-models too. One is a lawyer and the other is a professor at UConn."

"What about discipline?"

"We may talk about it, but Ginny makes the final decision and I abide by it. We have three mothers, four if you count the phone, nearby if we need advice." ***

"But you're so young? Are you old enough to vote yet?"

"Next year for me," Replied Rikki.

"I voted for Kerry-Edwards," said Ginny.

"Can you cook?"

"I like to think we can cook very well. Ginny bakes better than I do. I like to try new recipes."

"How do you support yourselves? You can't be old enough to earn much."

"Ginny is a published author. We live in her parent's house while they are deployed overseas. With scholarships, grants and help from our friends and neighbors, we get by."

"What do you know of love?"

"It's been a bumpy ride, but we've weathered the storm so far. We're separated when I'm away at a game or Ginny is on tour. It's a lot of fun coming home."

Ginny continued, "We've argued about things major and things inconsequential. We've both said things we later regretted. Apologized, made up and learned from it."

Rikki took up the recitation, "We survived a kidnap attempt by my father who thought he knew better than I did, where my home was. Actually, he was against my relationship with Ginny too."

"Rikki taught me how to love unconditionally."

"Ginny taught me about love, how to love and how I wanted to be loved."

"We've cried on each other's shoulder in the bad times..."

"...and celebrated the good times."

"We've lost friends and gained some."

"We've live on PB and J and ketchup soup..."

"...and dined on filet mignon."

"Most of all, we're good friends too. It isn't unusual for us to curl up on the couch and talk; about the day, a song we heard, something some one said, anything."

"All in all, I think we know as much about love as anyone."

The other older lady asked, "Do you want to get married?"

"Of course. That's every girls dream. We're willing to wait for society to catch up a little. We could go over to Massachusetts or even Hawaii. That would make it hard for family & friends to attend. We might not be together in a year or so. In any event, we're having fun right now."

"We keep hearing about `Domestic Partner Benefits'?", one of the ladies said.

"Doesn't apply to us. Rikki is covered by her Mom's health insurance. My parents cover me and Lauren. I have already made a will designating my parents as Lauren's guardians in the event of my death and my book royalties go into a trust fund for her education. Other things go to Rikki."

The first lady asked Rikki, "How do you feel about not being named guardian?"

Rikki replied matter-of-factly, "We talked about it. We decided that Lauren's needs were better served with Ginny's parents. I would still be involved. I had no problem with it."

"How do you deal with intolerance?"

"How about other friendships?"

Ginny chuckled, "Let me answer your 2nd question first. Our best friends, Sarah and Allison, are another lesbian couple and they introduced us. It's not unusual for you to find the four of us hanging out at any one of our houses on any particular day. Other than that, we're pretty normal. We have guy friends and girl friends. Everyone knows who and what we are."

Rikki picked up the narrative, "That leads to your first question. High School can be a cruel place to begin with. Mark yourself different and you're asking for trouble. Initially, there were comments. We lost friends who wouldn't take the time to understand. There were nights when we cried on each others shoulder. When they saw that we were still the same and weren't trying to convert anyone, some came back. There's still some animosity, but we get invited to parties just like any other couple."

Ginny interrupted, "And if someone makes a comment, our friends will usually stick up for us. We know enough now to consider the source and not let it bother us."

The first lady said, "You're not like the others."

"If you mean we're not in-your-face demonstrating for gay and lesbian rights, you're right. We think society will come around if we simply live our lives and be a part of the community. The more we are seen as a normal part of the neighborhood, the faster people will accept us."

"Have you ever been physically attacked?"

"Thanks heavens, no. But I've heard stories of one who have. This area seems to be better than some."

Ginny looked down to find Lauren yawning. "Ladies, it's been nice talking to you, but we need to get this one home for her nap."

The older lady replied, "It was nice to talk to you too. You've given us a lot to think about." ***

Rikki put Lauren down while Ginny called Sarah's house. "We had an interesting conversation in the park this afternoon. Can we wangle a dinner invite so we can tell you about it?"

"Let me ask. Mom, can Ginny and Rikki come to dinner?"

Ginny heard her mom reply, "Sure, as long as they bring Lauren too."

"You heard her. Come on over."

"Thanks. Be there in about 30 minutes."

When they got to Sarah's, her Mom claimed Lauren, "I'm going to entertain the little one while you four finish dinner preparations."

"Yes ma'am."

While domestic bliss reigned in the kitchen, the four friends talked as the world rolled by.
