My parents told me they were going to go to Hawaii for a few days, so they asked me what I wanted to do. Stay home or go on the trip with them? I thought about it for awhile; this announcement was definitely unexpected.
"Mike will be staying with you if you stay, Honey," my mom told me. I glanced up from my meat loaf. Mike was my best friend. We met in third grade, when he hit me for stealing his jump rope. From there on, we were great buds.
"Kay...I think I'm gonna stay." I confirmed. "Yeah...I'll stay with Mike." I saw my parents look worriedly at each other. Isn't that nice? They don't even believe me!
Three days later...
"Honey, never answer the phone. We'll call you on your cell. Oh, never open the door for anyone either, we have the key. Don't go out by yourself. Boys, stick together, okay?" Mom laid down the law as she hurried to the taxi. I looked at Mike and grinned. He smiled back.
"Have a good time, Mom. Have a good time, Dad!" I called as Mike yelled, "Have a good time, Mr. and Mrs. Williams!" When the cab was out of sight, I closed and locked the door.
"So, three days to ourselves. How cool is that?" Mike exclaimed. He began to walk up the stairs and motioned for me to follow.
"Yeah...yeah." I agreed, following him to the game room. I didn't tell Mike how I really felt about him. I didn't wanna ruin the friendship we built for five years.
"Hey, let's play Mario," Mike suggested. I turned on the Wii, TV, and put the game into the system. Soon, we were screaming at the top of our lungs, frantically trying to beat each other.
After about an hour, we decided to stop. Mike and I were laughing our heads off, and he collapsed on my bed, giggling. I sat on my chair, still erupting with laughter.
"Did you hear, Jake?" Mike asked me, turning to face my panting body. "Zac is gay! Yeah, from school? He and Dave are going out now." He just laughed. I wanted to puke.
"How do you...feel about that, Mike?" I asked timidly. Mike stopped laughing and looked like he was thinking.
"Well, I don't care. I mean, it's who they are," he said slowly. "You?"
I wanted to tell him, "That's good. I'm gay too." but I didn't.
Instead I said, "Don't care, really. Hey, you hungry?" I started for the door when Mike jumped up and grabbed my wrist.
I turned to face him. He met my gaze, holding me. But soon enough, he let go and turned away. "Starving," Mike muttered.
Wondering what just happened, I went downstairs to fix him and me a snack.
Weird, I thought the whole way there.
