I GIVE YOU

Steven and Brian 2

I closed the bathroom and bedroom doors so he could get some privacy, and headed down the stairs to work on some food. I loved this kitchen. As a kid, I had enjoyed helping mom, and when I got older, if anyone cooked it was usually me. When I had this house built, I took special interest in the kitchen. I wanted to be a place I didn't mind spending time. And that is just how it turned out. Now the real question was what to cook. Brian likes cheese, and he is probably really hungry. I looked at the clock again, 11. OK, skip breakfast and on to lunch. I decided that some homemade macaroni and cheese would be perfect. I got out the noodles, cheese and milk. As I was bending over to get the pan out of the cabinet, I heard a loud thud come from the floor above me. I ran out of the kitchen and rushed up the stairs. I could hear the shower was still running, so I went through the bedroom door, and stood outside the bathroom door. "Brian, are you ok in there?" No answer. "Brian? Brian answer me or else I am coming in there!" Still no answer. I opened the door, ran over to the glass door to the shower, and looked in. Brian was lying on the floor, a small amount of blood washing around in the water. Shit. I threw open the door and turned off the water. I picked Brain up out of the shower, and laid him out on the bedroom floor, and began drying him quickly with the towel that was on the rack in the bathroom. I grabbed his old clothes and quickly dressed him. "No way Brian. I'm not going to be the one to call Kevin and tell him that you are dead. You just keep breathing. Shit! OK, lets go." I picked him back up and started down the stairs. Man, he was heavy. I threw him in the Corvette, figuring that would get us to the hospital the fastest. I ran around and jumped into the car, and peeled out of the driveway, and onto the street. Once I was on the interstate, I pulled out my phone and dialed the hospital.

"Herman Hospital. How may I direct your call?"

"I am bringing a friend to the emergency room. He is still breathing with a steady heartbeat. He has a head injury that he got in the shower. He is unconscious."

"OK Sir, please pull right up to the Emergency area, and we will have someone waiting for you."

"Thank you." I spoke as I hung up. I pushed on the gas some more and the car responded as I flew past the other cars on the highway. I thought about all the times I had seen people passing the way I was and called them idiots. I guess it all comes back to us doesn't it. At 110mph, it wasn't going to take very long to get to Herman. I reached over and checked on Brian, he was still breathing. I had several close calls on the way, but breathed a sigh of relief as I get off the highway and into the lane for the hospital. I pulled up to the emergency doors, and several doctors ran over and threw Brian onto a bad and wheeled him through the doors. His phone fell out of his pocket, and I picked it up as I ran into the hospital after him.

"Excuse me, Sir? Can I help you?"

"Yes, I just brought a friend into the emergency room with a head injury. Do you know where he is?"

"He is still in the ER Sir. I am going to have to ask you to take a seat in the waiting room. A doctor should be in shortly."

"Thank you." Well, all I could do was wait now. I took a minute to take in my surroundings. That great hospital smell, the health magazines on the table. Gosh I hope Brian doesn't have to be here long. I remembered I still had Brian's phone in my hand, and decided I should look through his phone book to see if there was anyone stored that I should let know that he was in the hospital. Before I could, the doctor walked into the room.

"Are you Steven?"

"Yes, that would be me."

"I understand that you are the person who brought Mr. Littrell in?"

"Yes I am. How is he?"

"Well, he could be better. He took a pretty nasty fall. We were able to stop the bleeding without much of a problem. Unfortunately, he has some swelling in his brain, causing pressure on his visual cortex, as well as a concussion. The swelling has resulted in a loss of vision however. We won't know until the swelling's gone down if the blindness is permanent or temporary. He has been asking for you however. He has a headache, so you will want to make sure you talk quietly, and make his rest. The more sleep he gets, the faster he gets out of here."

"OK, I will make sure he gets plenty of rest. What room is he in?"

"Room 1023. Tenth floor."

"Thank you very much." I walked out of the room and to the elevators, still soaking up all that the doctor had told me. 'Lost his eyesight!' I thought quietly as I pushed the button for the 10TH floor. I don't know what I would do if that happened to me. The other guys need to know. I soon found myself outside of room 1023. I slowly pushed the door open and looked in. There on the bed was Brian. His head was wrapped in gauze and he was staring at the ceiling.

"Hello?"

"Hey Brian."

"Steven?! Oh good. I was afraid you would have left."

"Now why would I do that?"

"Who wants to stick around and help some blind guy who has problems?"

"Now Brian, you should know that if I have done what I have already, I wouldn't leave now."

"Your right. I'm sorry." Brian sniffled, and then broke down into sobs.

"Brian," I spoke as I rushed over and pulled him into a hug. He clung to me like if he let go, he would be forever lost "Shhhh. Everything is going to be all right Brian. Don't cry. The other four guys are there for you, and I'm here for you. Everything is going to be ok."

"What do you mean the other four guys?" Brian asked startled.

"Brian, I have known who you are the whole time."

"You did? So did you just help me because of who I was?"

"No, I didn't. I helped you because of what you were. A person in need. And I came over to talk to you before I realized who you were."

"Thank you. I am just so scared. My friends don't want to be with me anymore. I can't see. I just feel like I lost so much so quickly." Brian began sobbing again.

"Now Brian, why would your friends not want to be with you anymore?"

"I don't want to talk about it. You would hate me. I know you would. Just like they do."

"Brian, you need to talk about it. I won't hate you. If I have been here this long, I won't leave because of what you have to say." There were a few minutes of silence before he very quietly and timidly spoke.

"You promise you won't hate me?"

"I promise."

He now spoke even more quietly. "I...I'm gay." He spoke and then burst out into tears, and tries to pull away from me, but I wouldn't let him

"Brian, I am not letting go. I don't hate you. I don't care." With that he clung to me for life. I just let him cry, while I rocked back and forth, soothing him while he let everything out.

"Thank you." He finally spoke.

"Brian, you need to talk to the guys." He ripped himself out of my arms, and crossed his arms.

"I have nothing to say to them. They don't want me there anyway."

"I doubt that Brian. If you don't I will."

"Well I'm not, and you don't have anyway to find them anyway."

"It shouldn't be too hard. I'd be willing to bet that someone's number is in your cell phone, which is in my hand."

"You wouldn't."

"I would." Brian looked away stubbornly.

I pushed the power button on the phone and Brian could here the phone beep and go into service. He was becoming nervous again. I flipped through the phone book and hit send when I saw "Kev's Cell" on the screen. A few seconds later the phone was ringing."

"Hello?"

"Is Kevin there?"

"This is Kevin. Who is this?" He spoke with an attitude.

"Drop the attitude Kevin. You don't know me, but I am a friend of Brian. He is in the hospital."

"Shit! Sorry. What happened? Is he ok? Where is he?"

"He will be fine, but right now he's not doing so hot...if you know what I mean."

"Umm...yea. What hospital?"

"Herman. Meet me in the lobby in half an hour."

"OK, bye."

"Bye." I hung up.

"Please don't bring them up here! Please. I can't talk to them."

"Brian, they are worried about you."

"No they aren't. They don't care."

"Brian, they are coming, doesn't that say something?" He nodded in defeat. I spent the next 20 minutes assuring Brian that I would not bring them up until I was sure everything was ok. I stood up to go to the lobby, and told him to rest. I walked out of the room, and took the elevator, which let me off in the enormous lobby. I waited for about 5 minutes before I saw then enter the hospital. I walked over to Kevin and tapped him on the shoulder. "Excuse me, Kevin?"

"Yes?"

"I'm Steven."

Before he had a chance to respond, Howie stepped over and sent me flying with a hit to the face "You Bastard. What did you do to him?"
