Stuck in the Middle-Part 1
I liked the way Anna blew out cigarette smoke from between her full lips. I think that's the first clear impression I have of her: leaning against the gazebo in back of the tiny campus, smoking in the one tiny island allowed to us nicotine fiends for the privilege of indulging in our nasty habit. She said we'd gone to high school together, but I couldn't remember her from back then. I couldn't remember a good deal of high school, so that wasn't unusual. I didn't need that opening to strike up a conversation with her, but it made it that much easier. Anna boasted the some of the best looks her Italian breeding could offer: thick, wavy black hair matched with olive skin and a curvy, womanly figure that practically screamed, "Take me now! Here on the grass! Who cares who may see?!" She had eerily green eyes, though; not a sort of cool green-gray, like mine, but a yellowy acid-green that burned into the eyes of the on-looker. Her very direct manner of looking at people didn't help, but all the same it was a bit of a turn on.
We chatted amiably whenever we saw each other at the smokers' gazebo that semester, but never did much else. I figured she was straight, from the way she would go on occasionally about this guy or that, so I never put any moves on her. Besides, I was still trying to get in Laura's panties, a new friend I'd made in art history. Laura wasn't as hot as Anna, no contest, but she seemed more accessible. Laura was a fun little brunette with an average figure but a naughty side that never failed to get me wet when she'd let it out, which wasn't often at first.
That whole semester went by without me getting any farther with Laura than a bit of "friendly" wrestling under the covers and cuddling. She couldn't seem to figure if she liked girls or not. I had to resort to necking with strange girls at parties to get by without screaming in frustration. If things don't turn around this semester, I thought, I'll give up women temporarily and try my luck with men for a bit (as horrible as that sounded).
Mondays and Wednesdays Laura and I had a poetry class, and the first class we waltzed in, arm-in-arm, looking forward to be to swotty little clowns we'd been in art history. I got a pleasantly hot little jolt when I spotted Anna in a seat towards the back, and I quickly steered Laura in her direction. Her eyebrows rose knowingly when she saw who I was aiming for, and gave me an appreciative nod and a nudge that Anna thankfully didn't appear to notice. As we drew up to her seat she smiled up at me and waved us into the empty seats to her left.
"Hey, Zoe, it's nice to see someone good talk to has landed in this class. Who's your friend?" Anna smiled warmly at Laura, who smiled back, a little flushed.
"This is Laura. We met in Greg's class last semester."
Laura just stared appraisingly at Anna, as though she had never seen a female before. Great. Months spent trying to bag her, and Anna floors her in five seconds.
"Laura, this Anna, the chick from the gazebo."
"Is that how you refer to me?" asked Anna, wrinkling her nose a bit, but smiling all the same.
"Well, yeah-" I began.
"Good morning, class," Barret intoned from the front of the room. I hadn't even seen him come in. I must be losing it, stuck between two girls I'd just love to fuck.
The rest of the class I didn't really hear Barret going on about Dickinson and Baudelaire, just Nine Inch Nails "Closer" endlessly looped in my brain as I thought about what I'd like to do with Anna if miracles happened to sad little dykes like me.
From the look on Laura's face as we left class, she hadn't been paying attention to the lecture, either. I asked Anna what the assignment was, and she gave me a curious look, but told me as I jotted it down and promptly forgot it. Laura hastily wrote it down in her planner, too, then thanked Anna shyly and asked if she wanted to come get some cheese fries with us at the café down block. I was a bit surprised at that; it wasn't really like Laura to invite people she barely knew to spend time with her outside of class. Anna declined, saying she had to pick up her brother from the junior high, but laughingly promised to see us at the gazebo sometime. I watched her go, sighing as her swaying rear carriage pulled out of sight into the student parking lot.
"She's just great, Zoe," Laura breathed, "Fabulous."
"Fabulous?" I asked incredulously. "Since when do you say that?"
"Since her. Oh, Zoe, do you think you could hook me up with her? Is she gay, or bi? I want her so bad; I don't even understand it. I don't think I've felt this way about a girl before. Do you think she likes me?"
Christ. "Babe, she just met you. Who knows? For that matter, you just met her. How do you know if you really like her, especially since you don't seem to know if you're really gay or not?" Answer me that, I silently challenged.
Laura's face clouded over for a bit, and she frowned in thought, then smiled a little, and replied, "I guess I know now, huh?" Then she turned and quietly walked away.
"What the hell is wrong with this picture?" I demanded of no one in particular.
With that single little affirmation, Laura seemed determined to be as stupidly smitten with Anna as a fourteen year-old hetero girl with Justin Timberlake. God, I thought, is a sick bastard. Now she's gay. Why me? I found myself saying that more and more often as Laura used me as her ferret to get Anna to admit she was gay, what she thought of Laura, what she found romantic, blah, blah, blah. The gay thing was easy. I just asked her if she liked girls, she said yeah like she assumed everyone knew it, and that was that. She seemed to like Laura well enough, but not as much as Laura wanted her to. The school-yard crush thing did not do anything for Laura's appeal, in my opinion. She bugged the hell out me, gushing about Anna, worrying about what Anna would think about this or that-did she look good enough to be with someone as gorgeous as Anna? Be honest, Zoe, I need the truth. No, Zoe, don't roll your eyes at me; I'm serious. Gak.
The worst part was, when she would prattle on about how wonderful Anna was, I silently agreed with her. Anna was a great poet: passionate, smart, sultry. Ooh, did I ever like sultry. She had a contagious laugh, an earthy sense of humor, and a pretty clear outlook on life. Not to mention a smolderingly hot body. I wanted her as much as Laura, or more, but I tried to be the good friend and let Laura have the field. I can be so disgustingly nice sometimes, I almost hate myself. Laura was pushing my buttons, though, being silly and indirect in courting Anna. It was weak, the way she was trying to mold her fantasy vicariously through me. She knew that Anna loved poetry, but she wasn't that good of a poet herself, being more of an artist rather than a writer. So it fell to me to create the verse she wanted with which to "woo fair lady." I threw together some emotionally charged letters and a killer poem based on the parameters Laura had set, and gave them to her to give to Anna once she finally decided to get over her shyness and get direct with Anna. The notes were slipped into Anna's bag, and the poem reserved for an upcoming class period where Laura's latest work (actually mine) would get work-shopped, so that Anna could read between the lines and get the picture, or something lame like that. Honestly, I thought Laura was becoming exceptionally tiresome (not to mention imbecilic), but I put up with it, because I'm a sap when you get down to it.
The day of the workshop came `round and Laura nervously gave everyone a copy of the poem, then read it aloud up front, trying not to look at Anna after every other word. We all discussed it good points (many of those, I noted smugly) and its weaknesses (very few-even more smug), wrote down the next period's assignment, and packed up. Laura started to head back towards Anna's seat, but Barret cornered her to talk about "her" poem, and Anna made a motion with her head, signaling that she wanted to get outside for something. Shrugging at Laura behind Barret's back, I followed Anna out into the hall, and down into an empty recess where she drew close to me, as if to speak privately.
"That was your poem, wasn't it?" she asked me, piercing me with her direct stare.
I flushed a bit, but answered, "Yeah, Laura wanted me to help with-"
"These?" she said, holding up the letters Laura had planted in her bag under something ludicrous like "Your Secret Admirer" or "Anonymous."
"You found us out, huh?" I grinned, not caring anymore about the whole damned stupid thing, just grateful I wouldn't play middleman anymore.
"Zoe, it's obvious Laura didn't write these."
"Is it? How?" I knew it was, but I felt a little curious as to why she thought so.
"Well, not to be mean, but she's just not that good of a writer. Another thing-" she paused, licking her lips a little as I watched, fascinated "-I would know your writing anywhere."
"Oh?" I felt a little light-headed. It was getting a little warm. Did they just jack up the heat in this pile, or was it only me?
"Of course. The slightly cynical edge, the sensuality, the passion..." she trailed off, realizing how she must sound. I'd never been so erroneously flattered.
"Yeah?" I replied (wow, was I a brilliant one for witty dialogue), leaning in.
"The letters? They slid over me like silk. I couldn't believe anyone could say those things without sounding absolutely cheesy. God, they were hot," she breathed, leaning in towards me as well.
"Hot, eh? Not nearly so much as you are, right now, letting me drink in the sight of you like a lush does champagne." So much for not sounding corny.
Amazingly, she loved it. She half-closed her eyes and bent forward even more, and that was all I needed. I pushed her against the wall, kissing her almost brutally hard. I darted my tongue between her lips, and she surprised me by sucking it into her mouth with ferocity to rival my own. I moaned a little, I think, and gripped her hips, kneading her flesh through her skirt, brushing my thumbs near her crotch. She raised her ass from the wall a little to met the rotation of my thumbs, and tightened her arms around my neck.
A little sob broke off the kiss, and I pulled away from her with a small gasp, stupidly realizing what I'd done. Laura stood not ten feet away, just having gotten away from Barret. She stared at me for a moment with accusing eyes that trickled tears and mascara down her face, then ran down hall without a word.
"Dammit!" I swore, letting my head hang down, my arms on either side of Anna, propping me up. "I'm such a fucking whore."
"Don't beat yourself up, Zoe," Anna soothed, running her hands through my auburn curls, "You didn't mean to hurt her. We just got carried away. I'm sure she'll get over it eventually."
"Yeah, sure. Perhaps sometime in the next few millennia," I retorted sourly, pissed at myself for being such a terrible friend, but still exultant that I finally had gotten to do something I'd wanted for months: kiss Anna's pouty lips and French her tasty mouth while she pressed her assets up against me.
I sighed and straightened up, then bent to give her another kiss, this one soft and lingering. She hooked her finger into my belt loop and kept me locked in it longer than I'd intended, nearly shattering what little self-control I had left.
"No more of that," I hissed out once I could get my breath, "I wouldn't want to give the philosophy class a free show." I'd noticed a door beginning to open down the hall, and heard the excited chatter of students finally getting free after three hours of Gibson's endless stutter and pontificating. I grabbed Anna's hand pulled her down the hall and out the door to the parking lot, grinning maniacally at the thought of what I would do to her once I got her back to my place. Laura be hanged for now. I'd make it up to her somehow, later.
