SUMMER 2000
*****@@@@@@ 'Matt, he's here. He's living with us for the rest of the summer.' Jessica said over the phone.
'And what, may I ask, are you doing with your summer, Jay?' Matt Conway, her best 'guy best friend', and the only guy who would call her Jay, asked. He was standing naked in the middle of his room, pacing back and forth with his mobile phone while trying to put on his boxer shorts.
'The usual.' She grumbled over the phone.
'Jay! How many times did I tell you to stop partying too hard? And what would your father say?'
A flashing image of Jay's 38 y.o. father in his big office desk, slaving away...and an image of him with his second wife in the Carribean cruise they usually go to every six months. She hasn't seen him for three years, ever since that flashy private school graduation, and he gave her and her twin brother Charlie, the house in England as a gift. They would spend their holidays there, trying to catch up with all the rich snobs they never grew up with, but close family friends of their fathers.
'I don't think my father will ever know. Right now, he's busy playing footsie with that Fiona.' Jess didn't like talking about her family. All her life, she was thrusted in the arms of a nanny, and then later on a chauffeur. Her mom died when she was young, and his dad spent all his life running away from his kids, using his job as an excuse.
'well, Jess. You're always free on the Maschos, you know.' Matt, was his father's partner's son. They all studied in the same private school in Knox, and moved on to attend college in the same university together. He was the only one who called his house ( his dad's grad gift) in England a name, calling it Maschos.
'I dont wish to intrude.'
'No, no. Not at all. Mary will be too happy to have you here.'
'She hates me.' she pouted over the phone.
'No, she doesn't She just hates your face. Girls always hate pretty girls. You know that.' Matt reassured.
'And Nick's got a new girl.' She added.
'About time he got over you.'
'Yeah...but...'
'Jeally?'
'No!' she almost dropped the phone when Nick came out of his room with Emily, both bedraggled and invincibly reeking of - sex.
They were just standing there in the entry. Nick had this smug smile on his face while Em continued to lick his ear.
Jess was greasing them off. Only Nick noticed.
'jay? You still there?' Matt asked
'Huh.' she replied.
Emily finally stopped her licking and let go of his arm. 'Bye Nick.' Em bounded out of the front door.
Something reflected from the sunlight streaming down the window. A simple crucifix, hanging from a white-gold chain on Emily's neck as she got out of the door. That's when Jay noticed the necklace she was wearing. ' Matt, I'll call you.' She pressed the end call button and turned to Nick.
'What is your problem?' Jess confronted.
'What did I do now?' Nick asked, running a hand through his rumpled blond hair.
'Her blue-green eyes blazed angrily. 'You gave her the necklace!'
'So what? You gave it to me, I am entitled to give it anyone.'
'Yes, but that was special! I gave it to you, just for you.' She was really pissed off. 'You suddenly pop into my life-after two years...Rudely, as a matter of fact.'
'Rude? Who you calling rude? You're the one who's snubbing me off all the time.'
He was right, she thought. She decided a different approach. 'Didn't we have some good times together?'
Nick hesitated. He stepped forward. 'Of course.'
'You should've thrown away that necklace! If you were going to give it to another girl then it was worth throwing away...'she suddenly choked her saliva, and ended up couging and sniffing.
'I'll take it back. Hush, Jes. I'll take it back.' He crossed the space between them and hugged her.
At first she struggled, but then relaxed.
'I'm sorry Jess. So sorry.' Nick kissed her forehead.
Her nose.
Her lips.
And pushed his tongue in.
Then it was out all of a sudden.
He mumbled 'shit' and stumbled off to his room without one word of explanation
'Shit.' Jess was dumbstruck. She frantically searched for her car keys, then left the house in a hurry. ***
Mary, blonde Mary, Matt's New York girlfriend who came with them to London, sat beside her in Jess' BMW roadster.
'So he kissed you-no biggie, darl.'
Jess signaled for a right turn. 'I guess so. But Mary...'
'What Jess?'
'Do you think I like him?'
Mary scoffed. 'Jessica, you expect me to answer that.'
'Well, can you?'
'You obviously enjoyed kissing him.'
Jess braked hard, causing them to lurch forward. 'Why'd you say that?' she asked, arranging her hair frantically.
'You won't drag me out of the house for this.' Mary said, and immediately regretted saying it. She took pity when she saw Jay's exasperated look. 'All right, all right. You were his first love- I guess you are a little bit jeally about him being with someone else. You lasted long, Jess.'
They pulled over the Maschos, a grand little mansion situated at the end of a long hilly driveway. It was situated on the same suburb as Jessica's and Charles. It used to be that they all spent their holidays together at Jessica's, but then Matt grew out of it and moved to his Maschos. Nick took his place then.
'Hey Big Boy.' Mary pushed past Matt as he came out of the house to open the passenger door for Mary. Jessica's eyes slid down to his crotch automatically. She was mystified with all his girlfriends' Big Boy calling. Sure, Matt was pretty tall. About 6'2", but she couldn't find any reason for him to be called Big Boy unless he...has big equipment down there. Never really took notice of him wearing Speedos. She didn't really wanna know. Or find out.. Well, back to his crotch- it was covered by a huge beach towel.
'Wanna go for a swim?' he asked, sitting on the passenger seat.
Jess was temporarily tempted. 'No.'
'Wanna talk about what you talked about with my girl? Or is it just an all girl secret that couldn't be shared with me?'
Oh. Nick. She thought. Instead of answering him, she fumbled with the CD player.
Matt searched her face with those knowing blue eyes of his. 'Hey, I know you Jay. If you can't stand him, the Maschos is always open for you.'
'He's only been here less than 24 hours. I think I'll survive.'
He hugged her. 'I'll pop in your House later and say hello to the guys. How's Charles? Still a vampire?' Matt joked, trying to force out her pretty smile, and the almost-invincible dimple she's got.
She smiled faintly. 'Try harder.' She said, reading his mind. She started the car engine. ***
The phone was ringing when Jessica came back from the Maschos. She picked it up from the front hall, pressing the Talk button while lighting up a cig she found at the bottom of her bag.
'Hello?' she took a drag, inhaling it deeply.
'Hi, is Nick there?' a guy asked, his accent American, with a southern tinge in it. Brian was looking out of his window in Orlando, watching the cars come and go in the driveway. Another party done, he was dead tired.
'Let me see if he's in. He's probably resting.' She crossed the hall and knocked on Nick's room lightly. Soft melodic jazz could be heard playing inside.
'Jessica, is that you?' Brian asked, a smile forming on his face.
'Brian!'
'I haven't heard from you for ages.'
'I know. And you're engaged already.'
Brian laughed, the effort draining away from his worn out body. 'Guess I'll be the next one after Kev.'
She knocked on Nick's door again. Brad came bounding out of his room. 'Nick went out with Charlie.' He drawled, before disappearing back to his lair.
'He's not here, Bri. He went out.'
'Yeah? Don't worry then. By the way, have you met Em?' Bri changed the subject, trying to sense Jessica's reaction to the subject.
'Yeah, she's...nice.' Jess lied.
Bri laughed again. 'you need lying lessons.'
You need a nose job, Jay wanted to say jokingly. Instead, she settled for 'I guess.'
'You're jeally.' Bri pointed out.
'Jesus! What's with you guys and me jeally?'
'Cos, you are.'
'No, I'm not. Honest.'
'Good. That's good.' He said.
Matt came over for dinner that night, and Jess only saw Nick briefly after the morning incident. They guys were all having dinner, laughing along some old stories and jokes.
She entered the dining room, dressed in a tight pair of Girbaud jeans and an of-the-shoulder diamante studded top. Her long brown hair hung loose. All four pairs of eyes slid to her direction.
'Jess, where are you going?' Charlie asked in a mocking fatherly tone, leaning back on his chair and raising his eyebrows.
'Out. With my friends.' Something caught her attention to Matt's plate. 'What are you having?'
'Spags. With meatballs.' Nick answered.
She poked a ball with a fork. 'Yum.'
'You're not getting any.'
'Jess frowned and she pouted. 'Just wanna warn you guys. Farlon's coming to pick me up.'
Brad, who was drinking some wine, choked on it and had a coughing spasm.
'I hate,' Brad coughed, 'the faggot.'
'Are you going out with him or what?' Charles asked. Nick leaned forward, unaware that all eyes slid to his direction.
But it was Jessica's eyes which Nick locked his into. 'whatever.' She said blankly.
The doorbell rang and she started hugging everyone goodbye.
Charles coughed on his ear when she hugged him.
Brad and Matt gave her a peck.
When it came to Nick, she hugged him tightly, patting him on the back.
Nick smiled happily, glad that there was no more drama behind what happened that morning.
Farlon leaned on the bell, causing the chimes to sing annoyingly throughout the house.
'Like I said: Loser.' Brad said.
Jess gave him a dirty look before walking out of the room.
'She's gone.' Matt reached from under the table and pulled out 3 video tapes entitled Studio 69, A night out with Priscilla, and Johnno, the guy with the hole.
'What are they?' Brad asked, reading the titles. Then recognition hit him. He started to whistle.
Nick scanned the titles. 'just like the good old days huh?'
'Porn flicks all night? Matt, you're a legend for remembering.'
The girl's moaning could be heard throughout the lounge.
'Ooooh...' said the speaker on Nick's left.
'Aaaahh...' said another speaker from across the room.
It was driving him crazy.
Charles was mumbling something under his breath. 'Come on. come on.' it sounded like. Suddenly he stood up. 'Someone's gonna have some good luvin' tonight. I'm calling my girl.' He reached for his keys formt he table.
'You passing through the Maschos?' Matt asked, deciding to go for it to. Mary will be waiting. They left he room, waving goodbye to the stoned unconscious Brad and Nick.
Even then, Nick continued to watch the porns. Good memories were with those tapes. Nick loved the times he was with the whole group.
'What are you thinking of, Nicky?' a voice asked from the doorway. Nick looked up, surprised to see Jay. And to hear her call him Nicky (like old times) again.
'Life in general.' He smiled goofily.
'Deeeep.' She mocked. 'I bumped into the boys. They seem to be in a hurry.' Jess plopped next to him on the couch. And didn't seem to notice Brad lying on the carpet.
'In search for meat.' Nick pointed out the telly screen, wherein Studio 69 still played. Images of a couple doing it behind the bar flickered madly.
She laughed, understanding. The Boys' Night Out, she called it. 'Why didn't you go with them?'
'I didn't wanna leave Brad alone, unconscious.'
'Or maybe you just couldn't get it up huh?' Jay elbowed him on the ribs. 'Or do you prefer..." her eyes flicked towards the video tape titles. 'Johhno, the guy with the hole?'
'Watch this with me, Jess. For old times' sake.'
They just sat there, watching the lewd images for half an hour. Throughout the time, neither has spoken about Emily or Wills or Farlon. Between the sentences of 'Pass the vodka.' Or 'Pass the salt.' They talked about Knox, about the places they've been through, their opinions about their lives, their future.
It was time to bring up Emily. 'So where'd you meet her?' she asked, her tongue has loosened up after a few swigs from the vodka bottle.
'This club at California. We hooked up and it's been going strong for five months. She asked me to visit her one time during the summer here in London and here I am.'
With a bottle of vodka between them, they talked about the last two years they've been through. They talked. They drank. They bonded. The whole night.
Brian tossed and turned in his bed, noticing the empty space beside him. His wedding was due in two months and he was getting cold feet now. There were doubts...plenty of them. He needed Nick right now. His best friend, his other half, his savior. He wondered how his Frack was going through with meeting Jess again- and hoped he has definitely moved on.
The vacation in England wasn't Brian's or anyone's idea. Nick believed that he was in love. With Emily.
Brian hoisted himself up the bed and smoothed the silk covers. And smacked his head with the palm of his head. It was so obvious: He was jealous.
