Chapter 8
Where was Taylor? It was a question for the ages!
Lila stared at the ground sadly, avoiding eye contact. She knew Jordan would ask for Taylor eventually, but had hoped for more time to conjure up a good answer to his inquiry.
"Lil, where's Taylor?" he asked more forcefully this time.
She sighed. "He's still in the Caymans, dear."
Jordan looked around at the others. Their faces told him that something was horribly wrong. Fear began to consume his soul as he considered any number of rotten things that could have happened to the man he just had to see. Everyone was keeping some dirty little secret they didn't think he was ready to hear.
"OK, people, out with it! What's happened to Taylor?" Jordan demanded.
"Taylor happened to Taylor, son," Leonard replied.
"What the hell is that supposed to mean?" Jordan inquired angrily.
Lila took his hands, placing them in her lap. "What Leonard means, child, is that my son was always his own worst enemy. I'm afraid the Taylor we all love dearly has isolated himself from everyone and everything. What's left now....well, I'm not sure anyone knows quite what to call it."
Jordan became maximally pissed in thirty seconds flat. "You mean to tell me that something's gone wrong and all of you wrote him off? How dare you! All this time, you kept your faith in me. Why can't you do the same for him?"
Vin squatted down next to him. "We tried, honey. You can't help someone that refuses to accept it. He took losing you pretty hard and it changed him. Maybe he's not too far gone yet, but I doubt any of us have the skills to bring him back."
"I've been to see him, child. What I found was a deeply troubled man who refused even the slightest help," Lila told him. "I tried hard to get him to come home with me, but he insisted on being alone. I had no choice but to leave him there."
Jordan felt awful. Visions of that night came rushing back, bringing a ton of stinging guilt with them. He'd said some pretty mean things, taking his hurt out on the one person he cared for more than any other. Making those harsh statements and accusations was a huge regret in his life to date. After all he'd done, Taylor was the last person that deserved a fate like this.
"This isn't fair, dammit!" Jordan wailed. "If I can dig out, so can he!"
Lila became misty eyed at that remark. "Son, nothing would make me happier, but nobody's had any major contact with him since I left. He's determined to close himself off and drown in his sorrows it seems."
Jordan shook his head several times. "That's not right, Lila. I haven't been there yet. We love each other more than you know. He needs me and I need him. You've got to let me try!"
"Honey, you're not together anymore," Vin carefully reminded him. "You've been apart for weeks. Have you considered that it might make things worse if he sees you?"
Jordan pondered that for a moment. It was true, he hadn't given it a single thought. Memories of their good times and intimate moments entered his mind, pushing his fear of the unknown away. There was no way he could give up on the ultimate love of his life.
"Vin, you of all people know how much we love each other! You've seen it for god's sake! Don't tell me you wouldn't walk through hell to bring Thad back if necessary!" Jordan yelled, giving him a steely eyed stare.
Vin exhaled through his nose hard. "Of course I would," he said calmly. "If you want to try, then I say do it, but be prepared for what you find, Jordan. He's not the same person you love, and it makes me scared for you. You don't need anymore bullshit right now."
"Don't tell me I can't make a difference!" Jordan snarled. "I can bring him back. I just have to bring him back! I can't live without him!"
With tears running down his cheeks, Jordan removed himself from the group. Inside he sat down at the computer near the kitchen, and called up a few travel sites. After setting the required parameters, he scanned the data before him. He found a flight leaving for Grand Cayman in five hours. Using his Bryant Financial Amex card, he booked a seat and a standard room at the first hotel listed. Once confirmation was received, he clicked the print icon and received his itinerary on paper.
Returning to the quiet group with travel plans in hand, he walked directly to Carl. "Everything's set. Can you drive me home and get me to the airport by six?" he asked hurriedly. Carl looked at Lila for approval. She simply nodded "yes."
"Of course I can, Master Jordan. It would be my pleasure," he said.
"Great! Let's go then," Jordan said.
Before departing, though, he walked to Lila. "I WILL bring him back. Have faith in me, mom." Tears welled up and she hugged him tightly. He let her hold him until she was ready to let go. He then addressed Vin.
"Please tell Thad to take care of Charlie. He's in a dangerous spot and needs to be protected. I promised him that I'd make sure everything would be OK. Help me keep my word." he requested.
"You bet I will, sweetie!" he replied. The good friends embraced. "Bring him home, Jordan," Vin whispered in his pal's ear.
Jordan winked at him and returned to Carl. He took one last look at the worried group, not entirely certain he was ready for this endeavor. Still determined as ever to have his man back at his side, though, he pushed his jitters away and left for the limo.
Carl got situated quickly, watching Leonard run out to join them. Jumping in the passenger seat, he winked at his mate and rubbed his hand supportively. Carl was relieved to have someone to keep him company while this plan unfolded. Seeing that everyone was ready, he started the engine and put the transmission in drive. The long vehicle moved forward and began its trek to their first stop. Once they were safely rolling, Leonard turned in his seat to face Jordan.
"Are you sure you're up for this? You've been through a lot and this may be more than you're ready to handle," he said.
Jordan ran his hand across his forehead, feeling the beginnings of a headache coming on. "Of course I'm not sure, but I've got to try. He's done so much for me without asking for anything in return, so I owe him this. Deep inside, you know I'm right."
"Master Jordan," Carl interjected, "you used to ask my opinion of things quite often. Here's a piece of advice I'll offer without you requesting it.....Fuck what everybody else thinks! Bring him back. I've never seen two men that belong together like the two of you. Remember your love and you'll win. Don't let anything stand in your way!"
Both Jordan and Leonard smiled widely. The suggestion was dead on, and he intended to do just that. He placed a hand on each man's shoulder, rubbing them softly.
"You'll have your son back with you soon no matter what it takes. I promise you that."
Reaching his apartment, the three entered and put together enough clothing to last about two weeks. It may have been overkill, but no one had the slightest idea how long this was going to take. As far as Jordan was concerned, no amount of time was too great. He was committed to this for the long haul. Checking his flight for any delays one last time, he turned off the lights and bolted the front door. Leaving his old life behind once again, he walked like a man with a purpose to the vehicle. Looking at his place a final time as they pulled away, he settled in for the ride to the airport.
Nearly thirty minutes later, the vehicle found a parking place in the airport's multilevel garage. Carrying Jordan's bags, Leonard and Carl walked on either side of him, their arms across his shoulders. The contact was comforting as the adrenaline he'd been operating on began to wane. Finding the correct elevator, they rode down three levels, exiting to the pandemonium that was the ticketing counter. Lines were long and slow moving, reminding Jordan to ask Lila about using her jet next time. After what seemed like ages, his bags were checked and his seat assigned. Noticing the name on the credit card, the agent upgraded Jordan to first class, something he was truly grateful for. A short walk later, he stood in front of the TSA security checkpoint.
He hugged Leonard and Carl. "Thank you both so much. I know I can always count on you guys to be in my corner."
Leonard stood up straight and shrugged his shoulders. "What else would you expect a father to do for his son?"
Jordan's face showed his deep appreciation. Kissing them both on the cheek, he joined yet another crawling line. After presenting all the necessary papers and passing through the various detectors, Jordan waved at the couple, who'd waited until he was safely through the thronged maze. Moments later, he passed from view, and was now totally on his own for this massive undertaking.
He got to the gate about fifteen minutes before boarding began. Finding a chair, he finally took some time to breathe. He inhaled and exhaled deeply, trying to cleanse the apprehension he felt from his body. Closing his eyes, he saw Taylor's piercing eyes and his childlike smile clearly. He felt the flush of his skin each time the man so much as brushed across him. The close moments on the jetty played out as if he were really there, tucked safely in his man's lap. He felt their lips and tongues become one, tilting his head slightly as if he were positioning himself to accept the coming pleasure. He longed to feel the man's naked body pressed hard to his.
The gate attendant's boarding announcement threw Jordan out of his dream world. Getting on the aircraft first was one of the luxuries his newly acquired ticket afforded him, one he could get very used to. Marching down the jet way, he took seat 1A, not only in first class but a bulkhead seat at that! He silently thanked the gods for life's small favors. A smiling stewardess approached, happily taking his drink order. While people fought for carry on space and leg room, Jordan peacefully sipped his wine while awaiting takeoff. Finally, the doors were closed and the craft roared into the sky, taking Jordan to yet another appointment with destiny.
The ease of his travel came to a halt shortly after landing at Owen Roberts International airport. First, his bags were lost. With several airline employees scurrying, they were soon located on another flight which had landed in Nassau. They apologized profusely, assuring him that his bags would arrive early in the morning. Taking his hotel information, they arranged to have them delivered as soon as they came into their possession. Thanking them for their help, he moved outside, intending to grab a taxi to his hotel.
Frustration and anger took over as yellow bullet after yellow bullet sped past him like he didn't exist. He screamed louder at each one, hoping that he'd find at least one hearing driver, as the others must be deaf. After fifteen minutes of yelling and whistling, one of the yellow cars pulled up beside him. Thankful his ordeal was over for now, Jordan climbed in quickly, sinking into the worn seat. He gave the cabbie his hotel name and off they went, violating the speed limit flagrantly. The headache he'd drank away earlier was returning with a vengeance.
"What the hell else could go wrong?" he thought, massaging his temples.
The question was a prophetic one. After being dropped off, he approached the resort's front desk only to find they had no record of his reservation. His calm demeanor began to fall apart, one piece at a time.
"You have to give me a room," he explained. "I have a confirmation number guaranteeing me a place to stay!"
The employee was growing tired of his protests. "As I've been trying to explain, sir, we have a convention at this property and have no rooms available. I'd be happy to transfer your accommodations to a resort that has available accommodations."
"Fine," Jordan spat. "Just find me a place to sleep and make sure the airline knows where you people turfed me so my bags actually get to me."
"Of course, sir," she replied, casting a smart assed grin that annoyed Jordan to no end.
A few minutes later, she handed over the new reservations and called for the hotel's driver to take him there. Crawling into the large van, he just wanted to pass out and forget all about the travails he'd encountered so far. The exhaustion of a trying day was taking its toll, making him cranky and short tempered. Luckily, the ride was uneventful and he soon stood before a brightly smiling associate at his new resort.
She handed over his room card key, explaining that the manager from the first hotel had agreed to pay for his room to be upgraded.
"I guess being bitchy has its benefits!" Jordan thought.
She also related that the airline had been notified of his new destination and that she'd arranged to have his luggage brought up immediately once it arrived.
Jordan breathed a sigh of relief. Things were finally looking up. Thanking the courteous young woman for her hospitality, he rode the elevator to his assigned floor. Minutes later, he stood in his upgraded room, a two bedroom suite complete with an ocean view. Not giving a shit what was so special about the space, Jordan located a bedroom and stripped naked in seconds. Crawling under the soft covers, he drifted off before having a chance to turn off the bedside lamp.
The start of the dream was magical. He was curled up on Taylor's lap, watching the waves lap lazily at the jetty's rocks. A full moon shone brightly above, casting its silvery glare over the whole scene. The water was fairly placid, displaying a nearly perfect replica of the sky above it. Jordan sunk into the warm skin beneath him, clutching the arms that tightly surrounded him.
"I love you, Taylor," he said sincerely.
"I love you too, Jordan, forever," he said back. "I never stopped loving you, not for one second."
Jordan turned his head, regarding Taylor's face. It looked as he remembered it, filled with love and caring. His eyes blazed, boring tunnels of warm feeling directly into Jordan's heart.
"I'm sorry, but I can't stay, baby," Taylor continued. "I went on after you left, and have built myself a wonderful life. I couldn't leave it now if I tried. Please understand, I had no choice. It hurt too much not having you by my side, so I did what I needed to. I think of you constantly, but it just can't be like it was anymore."
Jordan moved from his lap, taking a seat on a rock across from him.
"Taylor, it can be like that again. We love each other, that's all that matters. I don't wanna be without you anymore. All we've got to do is want it badly, and it'll happen."
"It's not that simple, baby," Taylor said. "You made your choice, so I had to make mine. Life's not perfect, but I don't feel the pain anymore, so I can accept it. You'll be fine. Somebody will be lucky to have you."
"I don't want anyone but you, Taylor!" Jordan fired back. "Please, I beg you. Give us one more chance, you won't regret it. It could be even better than before!" By now, his heart was racing and his face was covered with signs of panic. He couldn't lose his one true love all over again.
Taylor rose, then pulled Jordan to his feet. Taking the younger man's face in his hands, he placed a single, long kiss on his glistening forehead. "I'm sorry, I just can't. It's too late to go back, Jordan. I've got to go now. Remember, I'll always love you."
With that said, Taylor turned and started to move down the rocks. Jordan attempted to follow, but the shadows rose up and became creatures that prevented him from passing. He watched as his man became smaller and smaller.
"Taylor, come back! Don't go!" Jordan screamed. "I love you and I need you!"
Taylor turned one last time, blowing a kiss to the frantic man, then disappeared beneath the waves at the jetty's end.
"NOOOOOOOOO!" Jordan wailed, sobbing loudly. "Come back! Come back, I beg you!"
It was no use, Taylor was gone. Turning to make his way back, Jordan found Lila standing on the beach, staring at him with a look of disapproval.
"You let me down, Jordan," she scolded. "We were counting on you and you failed!"
"I tried my hardest, believe me I did!" he explained.
"You should have tried harder. Now we've lost him forever, and we have you to blame!" she replied angrily. Looking passed her, he could see Leonard, Carl, Thad and Vin observing the scene. When he met their eyes, they shook their heads in disgust and started to move away with Lila in tow.
"Please believe me! I tried!" Jordan cried frantically. "Don't leave me alone!"
They didn't say a word, but continued to move away, leaving Jordan behind to wallow in his failure.
"Don't go," he cried, "don't go."
He woke with a scream and sat straight up in bed. His body was dripping with sweat, his heart raced, and his muscles trembled in fear. Looking around, he found himself safely tucked in the bed of his hotel room.
"Jesus Christ, it was a dream," he said, relief sweeping over his body. He looked at the clock, noting it was 4 A.M. Not wanting to get up just yet, he curled into a tight ball and let his heart rate return to normal. His body relaxed visibly as he began to think about his nightmare. While it may have been an amalgamation of morbid oddities cooked up by his warped brain, it cemented one thing that Jordan had tried hard to put out of his mind......failure was definitely an option.
Lila's words about Taylor being his own worst enemy began echoing in his brain. In his rush to save his lover, he realized he hadn't even asked where or in what condition he'd find him in. Maybe that was a good thing. If he knew what to expect, he might have found the task too daunting. Being in the dark had its good points, he decided.
Realizing sleep wasn't returning anytime soon, Jordan sighed and threw off the covers. He got up and made his way to the bathroom, relieving the pressure in his bladder. The hotel had been gracious enough to give him a courtesy kit, so he removed the tooth brush from its covering and set about getting his mouth minty fresh. Examining his teeth in the mirror after their cleansing, he was satisfied they looked alright, pleased they'd retained their natural luster. Dragging the included comb through his hair, he tried to bring his bed head somewhat more under control. The attempt was mildly successful, making him look a tad more together.
Leaving the bathroom, he searched around until he found the room's coffee maker. Impressed with the selection of Starbucks coffees lying next to it, he selected the one marked "strong" and went about setting the process in motion. As the machine heated up and began to belch, he smiled. The image of Taylor's proud face in Disney came to mind. It tickled Jordan that something so incredibly simple could thrill a grown man so completely. The expression of pride that burst forth was forever etched on his brain. It was one of the sweetest moments he'd seen, and it drove home how much he'd missed his charming man.
Soon the coffee maker finished its cycle, and Jordan poured himself a cup of the heavily caffeinated liquid. Trying to decide where to drink it, he chose the balcony, feeling it had the scenery necessary to give him the peace he needed. Once he was nearly there, however, it occurred to him that other patrons might not appreciate seeing a young man naked in public. Retracing his steps, he located what he'd been seeking....a terry cloth bathrobe hung out for guest use. Wrapping his body in the soft fabric, he retrieved his coffee and moved onto the balcony, taking a seat at a table outside the sliding glass door.
As he sipped his now lukewarm java, the horizon became a flaming orange line, indicating his day of reckoning was ready to begin. He watched the gulls diving for food, and then battling over the catch one of them made. They attacked each other with fervor, unwilling to concede until their goal had been met. If they weren't successful, they'd merely regroup and begin again. The scene was a metaphor for what Jordan was facing.
Admittedly, he wasn't working with much. He was counting on his face and genuine adoration being adequate. The love that once burned like the sun had to be in there somewhere, and he knew in his heart he could bring it out again. Still, though, he had his doubts. A lot had changed. The oddest thing was Taylor hadn't been working at all. Bryant Financial was his baby, his proudest achievement so far. Turning it over to Judy Frank had shocked Jordan immensely. He was lucky that Jordan was there, working alongside her to ensure that things remained alright. Equally bothersome was his lack of contact with Leonard and Carl. These men were heroes to him, and he apparently no longer regarded their relationship as important enough to maintain. Jordan had cut off contact with friends, but family was different. Taylor held his relatives in high regard, and isolating himself from them was baffling.
A chill ran down his back as he thought of more uncertainties. This puzzle was missing a great many pieces, and had a novice like Jordan trying to piece it together. He sighed again, taking a large sip from his mug. He wondered what he'd gotten himself into. Was he really up for this? Did he have what it took to drag Taylor back? Was he prepared for the likelihood that the man would cast him off without a second thought? The answer was easy........Hell yes he was! Taking his cue from the tenacious gulls, he finished his drink and moved inside to begin preparing for his day.
He called down to the front desk, discovering his luggage had already arrived and would be brought up shortly. Making sure the robe was appropriately adjusted, he paced the floor for the few minutes it took for the bellman to knock on his door. Accepting the bags with thanks, he placed them in the bedroom and withdrew his toiletries case.
Over the next hour, he showered and shaved, striving to look as much like his old self as humanly possible. He took extra time in gelling his hair, working diligently to ensure not one lock remained out of place. Content with his appearance, he dressed in clothing appropriate to his location. Clad in plaid shorts, a white t-shirt and his favorite flops, he stood before the mirror and examined the results of his efforts in detail. Deciding it wasn't gonna get any better than this, he sprayed a few random shots of Versace cologne over his body. The scent was Taylor's favorite, and he hoped the familiarity would lend him some assistance. While filling his pockets with essentials, his cell phone rang, startling Jordan. He was already tense and the cacophony it created added to his disquiet. Moving toward the offensive sound, he lifted the receiver, curious about who might be calling him at this hour.
"Hello?" he said tentatively.
"Hey, Jordan," Leonard's voice replied. "Glad to see you made it OK."
Jordan huffed through his nose. "It wasn't problem free, but at least I'm here."
"Listen," he began, "you got out of here so fast that I didn't have time to give you the name of the place Taylor is staying."
"Always a step ahead of me, aren't you dad? I made the same observation when I woke up."
Jotting down all the details Leonard offered, he folded the paper and secured it in his pocket. His worry about the upcoming meeting was running at a feverish pitch, and Leonard could sense his unease.
"Jordan, you listen to me and listen to me good. All you can do is your best, and if that's not good enough, at least you can rest easy knowing you tried. Nobody here will string you up if you can't bring him back."
"Leonard, thanks for giving me an out, but failure is not an option. I'm not leaving until he's with me and that's that. If I have to spend months to achieve my goal, then so be it." The conviction in his voice came through loud and clear.
"I'm proud of you, son. Regardless of what happens, I love you and stand behind you one hundred percent. If you need us, we're just a phone call away," he reminded Jordan.
"I love you guys too. I'll call you tonight and let you know what's going on," Jordan promised.
He hung up the phone and delighted in the support he'd just been granted. Their belief in his ablities loosened the knot in his stomach a bit. It felt reassuring to have at least one undying fan on his side. The unconditional backing did, however, increase the pressure he already felt. Throwing his bare feet up on the table in front of him, he ran through one final pep talk, summoning all the courage and bravado he could muster. Instinctively knowing it was now or never, he shoved in feet in the waiting flops and headed toward the lobby.
Making his way back to the front desk, he was greeted by a sturdy young man, who greeted him with a smile.
"Good morning. How may I help you sir?" he asked politely.
Jordan fished the folded paper from his pocket. "I was wondering if you could tell me how to get to this resort."
"Is there a problem, sir?" the clerk asked with concern.
"No, not at all. I have a friend I need to meet up with and I have no idea how to get there," Jordan explained.
"Very good, sir," the employee replied, obviously glad he didn't have to call his manager into the situation.
The desk clerk took a map off the counter and highlighted the best route. As he verbally went over the directions, Jordan made small notes in the margins, hoping to make the trek more efficient. Jotting down the final detail, he asked the man if it was possible to call for a taxi.
"If I may make a suggestion, sir, the scenery along the way is quite beautiful. Perhaps you'd allow me to have a moped brought around for you. Some of the grandeur is lost from the backseat of a car."
Jordan nodded his agreement, hoping the sights might calm him along the way. The clerk took the phone and dialed a number. Speaking rapidly in his native tongue, he barked a few instructions and then replaced the receiver into its cradle.
"If you'd be so kind as to step out front, sir, your transport should be there momentarily," he explained.
"Thank you," said Jordan. "I appreciate your assistance and suggestions."
"My pleasure, sir," the employee replied. "May you have a great day!"
Jordan was hoping for exactly that. Moving from the desk, he went through a double door to find a bright yellow scooter awaiting him. The bellman approached, giving him a fast rundown on the relatively simple machine. He was pleased that helmets weren't required, as his desire for more natural looking hair outweighed the need for safety. Climbing onto the seat and goosing the throttle, the bike moved smoothly forward and took Jordan off to begin his day.
The clerk was right.....the views were breathtaking. Under any other circumstances, Jordan would have stopped often to behold the crystal blue waters. The road twisted and turned, rising to stark cliffs only to fall back down to beach level. Jordan navigated without a problem, enjoying the warm breeze that pelted his face. He breathed in the fresh salt air, and allowed himself to relax, enjoying the warm sun on his exposed skin. The journey lasted about twenty minutes, and his hyper accurate map brought him to the property's front entrance without issue. After finding out where to park his scooter, he moved into the lobby, seeking more assistance from a hotel employee.
Once at the front desk, he withdrew the paper from his pocket. Finding a man in his late fifties regarding him, he moved toward him and was greeted promptly.
"May I help you sir?" he inquired.
"Yes, please. Could you direct me to bungalow 25?" Jordan asked.
An odd look came over the man's face. "Bungalow 25, sir? Are you sure?"
Jordan was more befuddled now. "Yes, sir. Bungalow 25, please."
Shrugging his shoulders, the man gave him the information he'd asked for. Jordan thanked him politely and moved to begin following the path laid out to him.
The entire resort was a series of private bungalows, varying in size, location and seclusion. He noticed a few people sunning themselves or enjoying tropical drinks as he made his way forward. Some waved, but most remained too wrapped up with the views to notice his presence. After walking for about ten minutes, bungalow 25 came into view off in the distance. It was the final building in the complex, sitting mid way down a fairly steep hillside with a stairway leading to the beach. Its location only offered one point of entry from above, thereby assuring it's total privacy. Jordan understood why Taylor had chosen this one. It was the ideal place to disappear and not be bothered. Continuing to trudge along the marked pathway, he finally reached the structure, pausing to observe it before moving on.
From the outside, things appeared in order. Bright flowering plants flanked the walkway leading to the front door. A bubbling fountain dribbled water over two naked cherub statues, complete with benches nearby to take in its serenity. The exterior's orderly appearance surprised Jordan, who'd been expecting things to look much darker. Having one more look around, Jordan moved the rest of the way forward, standing before the bungalow's front door moments later.
He hesitated for a minute once there. Lacing his fingers behind his head, he stretched furiously and willed the sense of fear he felt back down. Taking a few deep breaths, he counted to three and knocked firmly on the door. His heart beat fast as he waited for a response. After receiving none, he knocked again, more forcefully this time. Minutes later, his entreaties had still gone unanswered. Taking a firm hold of the door knob, he twisted it to the right, expecting to find it locked. The release mechanism clicked, causing the wooden slab to move from its resting place.
Afraid to let it go any further, Jordan called "Hello" through the thin opening. Silence was all he received in return. Sensing no other alternative, he pushed into the entryway, making sure to lock the door behind him. The blinds were all closed, causing the room to be significantly darker than outside. He paused while his eyes adjusted, the condition of the room before him slowly coming into focus. A small stream of light flickered across the room, giving Jordan glimpses of what he would see. The sight was downright scary.
Becoming alarmed at the small previews, he located a light switch and flipped it, the living room lamps coming to life. What he saw was astounding, causing sadness to wash over him. Dirty clothes were littered about. Ashtrays filled to capacity with butts abounded. Several empty wine bottles lay idly, joining a plethora of crushed cans on the floor. The smell of the room was stale and rotten, causing a bit of nausea to well up within him. Ignoring this chaos, he moved on, hoping to locate Taylor.
Finding the bedroom, he noted it's equally squalid state. More filthy clothing and packed ashtrays populated the space. He stepped over a variety of garbage while verifying the area was unoccupied. Unable to locate a human, he returned to the main room. He pondered his next move while surveying the wretchedness around him. Taylor's standards for neatness and organization had definitely slipped, Jordan noted. Feeling a cool breeze blow over his feet, he noticed the blinds on the rear door dancing in the wind. Moving toward them, he found the sliding glass door partially open. Looking carefully through the glass, he didn't see anyone about. Pushing the door fully open, he stepped out onto the bungalow's back porch.
The deck was devoid of life as well. Its appearance mimicked the front approach, tidy and somewhat idyllic. More lush plants bordered areas set up for sunning and entertaining. It looked out over a vast expanse of ocean, the azure water visible for miles. Jordan looked around intensely for any signs of his man, moving to the nearby stairway when he found none. He was starting to feel dismayed at the scene, thinking he'd have found Taylor by now. Visually tracing the steps to the beach, he kicked off his flops and began descending. Half way down, he stopped cold. He saw a human form in a chair about a hundred or so yards from where he now stood. The sight caused Jordan's heart to beat full tilt, as he paused to observe the motionless figure.
He squinted and tented his eyes with his hands, all to no avail. At this distance, no specific features could be discerned. Completing his walk down the stairs, his bare feet were soon buried in the warm sand. He stood still, trying once again to glean any information about the unknown body. The distance between them was still too great to learn anything meaningful, however. Slowly and carefully, Jordan moved toward the motionless silhouette. Minutes later, he stood next to the slumbering person, his heart becoming heavy with sadness.
Taylor didn't resemble the man Jordan recalled in any way. His hair was a mess, falling haphazardly across his forehead. Shaving had apparently become optional, as Taylor sported a full beard that was scraggly and oily looking. His skin was deep brown and leathery, showing evidence that he'd been spending hours in the sun. His body odor was pungent and sour, Jordan recoiling from its offensiveness. He lay in deep sleep, oblivious to the despairing stares being thrust upon him.
Jordan fell into an empty chair behind him. For a while, he did nothing but take in the pathetic site laid out before him. Where was the Taylor he knew and loved? This thing before him looked lifeless and empty. Reaffirming his reason for being there, he reached out and nudged the snoozing man's shoulder.
"Taylor, wake up!" he said.
Taylor moved a bit, emitting a few moans, but returned to his sleeping state. Undeterred, Jordan nudged again, harder this time.
"WAKE UP, TAYLOR!" he yelled loudly.
The sleeping man began to stir, his eyes shuddering rapidly as consciousness began to take root. His eyes finally opened, squinting at the sun's offensive brightness. Slowly, he sat up, rubbing them as if that would help them adjust more quickly. Judging his sight to be sufficient, Taylor stretched and started looking around to see what woke him. His eyes encountered with a piercing glare something totally unexpected.
"Hi," Jordan said meekly.
Taylor was silent. He merely stared at the man's face, trying to decide if this was real or if he was having one of his fanciful dreams.
"Taylor? Hello?" Jordan said, waving his hand in front of the dazed man's face.
There was no doubt now. The root cause of his inner pain was really here. A flood of emotion ran through him like a freight train, causing weeks of emotional wounds to bleed freely.
"What the hell are you doing here?" he finally said.
"I came to bring you back," Jordan replied innocently. He wasn't foolish enough, however, to think he'd be successful this easily.
Taylor scowled. "Who says I wanna go back, huh?"
"Don't you want your life back? Don't you want me back?" Jordan implored.
"As I see it," Taylor spat, "you made your choice two months ago. Leave, enjoy your life and leave me alone!"
Taylor rose from his chair and moved back toward the bungalow. Jordan took another strengthening breath and leaped up to follow.
"NO! I'm not leaving!" he yelled at Taylor's back. "I've got a few things to say, and whether you like it or not you're gonna listen to every word!"
Taylor increased his pace, taking the steps to the patio two at time. Jordan matched his speed, staying only a few feet behind. Upon reaching the top, Taylor ran into the house and searched for a cigarette pack that had something in it. Finding one among the litter, he lit it and inhaled deeply as Jordan came through the blinds.
"Sit down!" he commanded the smoking man. Taylor gave him a disgruntled look but complied. Jordan cleared off a nearby chair and took a seat as well. He collected his thoughts before beginning again.
"I came here to apologize for all the hurt I've caused you. I feel terrible about it, and can't imagine what you've been going through. Please forgive me, babe. I regret everything I said and wished I'd handled things differently."
Taylor was almost catatonic, his only movements being his hand bringing the cigarette to his mouth. He stared at the floor, his face devoid of emotion.
"I wasn't ready to face what happened to me," Jordan continued. "There was so much I was ashamed of and afraid to tell you. If I'd done what you wanted, everything would've come out. I'd been dishonest with you by keeping it inside, and I wasn't ready to handle the shame. Can you ever forgive me?"
Taylor put the butt out and looked at the pleading man. "Fine, I forgive you. Now go away!"
Jordan's conciliatory demeanor changed when he said that. "What's happened to you?"
"Happened to me?" Taylor yelled. "You happened to me, god dammit! One moment, I had it all...a great business, good friends and plenty of cash. Then I met you and all that didn't matter anymore. Without a word, though, you run off and throw me out with the trash. How was I supposed to feel? Huh? You tell me!"
"I'm sorry!" Jordan sobbed. "I know what I did was wrong, but I'm here now and I love you as much as I......"
"Don't you dare!" Taylor interrupted. "Don't you dare say those words! People who love each other don't do what you did! You made your choice and I've spent countless hours trying to figure out how to live with it!"
"You've spent this time wallowing in self pity!" Jordan screamed. "This isn't all on me, big man. NO! The high and mighty Taylor Bryant just had to have his way. He always knew what was best, after all. Little, helpless Jordan Maxwell couldn't do anything for himself. He needed daddy Taylor to do it all. BULLSHIT! I'm not a kid, Taylor. You just refused to accept that. It was your way or no way at all."
"I'm not the one who walked out!" Taylor countered.
"Maybe not, but you're the one who's given up!" Jordan shot back. "I really do still love you, but if this is how you want things, then have it your way!"
His hands trembling and his temper boiling, Jordan got up and moved toward the door. Before leaving, though, he turned back and went to the table Taylor had his feet propped up on. Taking something from his pocket, he threw it down and stormed off. Taylor grabbed a pillow and curled up in a ball on the couch. His depression was deep and dark, keeping him from thinking rationally. All he remembered was the night Jordan left, that one event consuming his mind. He relived it day after day, seeing Jordan get in that car and pass out of his life without so much as a fuck you. The pain was still fresh, causing him to cry out and hate himself all that much more. As he clutched the pillow, the tears began and his body shook violently.
Jordan ran from the bungalow so fast, he forgot to retrieve the flops he'd been wearing. Ignoring the pain the sharp pea gravel was inflicting on his bare soles, he steadily increased speed, desperate to reach the scooter before his emotions exploded. Reaching the scooter, he started the motor and revved the throttle, causing it to lurch forward awkwardly. He sped out the resort's gates and back onto the scenic highway. Concentrating on keeping the tear dam from breaking, he raced along the hair pin turns at a breakneck pace. All he wanted was to get back in his room so he could release the vicious pain that was eating him up. The next turn was a bit sharper, but he kept his speed constant. As he reached the curve's apex, the handlebars jerked violently, causing the over taxed bike to careen out of control. Moments later, everything went black.
After crying for two hours, Taylor finally sat up. He felt weak and disoriented, his system not used to shocks like that anymore. He looked aimlessly for another smoke, pushing things around on the table in search of one. Coming across the object Jordan had left behind, he snatched it up and turned it toward him. What he saw sent repressed feelings shooting through him like lightning. It was a picture of him and Jordan kissing in Disney. He studied it for a while, memorizing every curve. He examined their touching lips from many different angles, grinning slightly as he recalled the actual event. In that moment, he knew Jordan was right.... he had given up. Looking at the backside, he found that Jordan had written his hotel name and room number. Seeing the information stirred something within him. After considering it, he rose from the couch, knowing what had to be done.
"I can fix this!" he said aloud.
More alive than he'd felt in ages, Taylor began to think of ways he could go about repairing what had happened. He had no idea where Jordan's hotel was, let alone if he would ever speak to him again. He loved Jordan, that much he was sure of. He wanted to kick himself for being such an ass. He'd let the man of his dreams walk out without a fight once more. This time, however, things were going to be different if it killed him. Locating the phone, he dialed the operator.
"Hotel operator," a woman answered curtly.
"Yes, ma'am," Taylor said respectfully. "Does the resort have a salon on the premises?"
"Yes, sir, it does. Would you like me to connect you?" she asked.
"Please," he responded. The spa answered shortly, making Taylor an appointment for a full treatment in one hour. He dove into the shower so he could scrub his stinking body. Nobody was going to see him like this again, least of all the man he loved dearly. As he soaped his body meticulously, though, doubts began to cast a pall over his exuberance.
"Why would he want me back?" Taylor questioned. "I've been such an ass to him, and he's done nothing wrong."
He loved him, though, more than anything in the world. For better or worse, he needed to get off his ass and try. Selecting the cleanest towel available, he dried himself quickly and set off to find something to wear. As he examined dirty item after dirty item, he found the attempt hopeless. Locating the phone once again, he called the gift shop, asking them to bring him a pair of khaki shorts, a light shirt and some sandals in his size. The clerk happily took his order, and confirmed what bungalow to charge it to. Bidding the man farewell, he went back to the bathroom and began to try and bring a comb through his neglected hair. The pain was heavy as he pulled and ripped through the tangled mess. Several times, he had to stop and remove hair from the comb's fine teeth. Unable to do anything more with the mess, he wrapped the towel tightly around him and waited for his new outfit to show up.
Thankfully, the wait was short. After taking the bag and signing the bill, he went back to the bedroom and let the towel fall. The nearby mirror cast a reflection which, for once, he actually looked at and was finally able to see what he'd become. The tight muscles he'd been so proud of were smaller and starting to sag. The lines of definition he'd worked so hard to achieve were ambiguous and fading. His ribs poked out prominently, attesting to the weight he'd needlessly shed. The once lustrous skin was now sun whipped and dull. While the darker complexion suited him, it looked aged and tired. His eyes were sunken, but showed a glimmer of the life they once held. Shaking his head in disappointment, he tore the tags off his new clothing and got dressed. The salesman had selected a pair of smooth khaki shorts, a red shirt with the resort's name on it and a pair of brown leather flops. Throwing it all on, he raced out the door and barely made it to his appointment on time.
The stylist was shocked to say the least. A complete makeover was definitely in order here. Taking Taylor into the rear of the salon, she directed him to lie back in the hair washing chair. Getting his hair sufficiently wet, she poured a generous amount of shampoo over it and began working it into the deteriorated scalp. After repeating the process several times, she applied a rich conditioner, telling Taylor it would have to remain there for fifteen minutes. Seeing to his comfort, the stylist moved out and checked on her other clients.
Taylor began to form a sort of mental checklist while he waited. Getting cleaned up was number one. While his clothes were OK, he wanted to project a different image when he caught up with Jordan. A visit to the retail complex on the property was warranted for that. The room was a disaster area, something he'd have remedied before he departed for the evening. A phone call needed to be made, a phone call he dreaded. That needed to be handled before he reached Jordan's room. By the time he made it this far in the list, the stylist returned and began rinsing the mixture from his hair.
Sitting him up, she towel dried his head until she was sure that no excess water was dripping. Taking him to another nearby chair, she covered him up and began to brush through his sun bleached mop, an operation the conditioner made immeasurably easier. Then, taking scissors and comb in hand, she deftly sliced off inch after inch of unhealthy strands, the discard pile below her growing rapidly. She used clippers to refine the edges and even out the sideburns. Shaving a veritable forest off the rear of his neck, she squared the back neatly, pausing often to make sure that all was symmetrical. After an hour of industrious labor, Taylor's hair looked much like it had in the past.
Next, she wrapped his face and neck in steaming cloths, allowing them to rest in place for several minutes. After removing them, she applied a thick coat of cream to the out of control beard, adding more where needed. Producing a shiny, sharp straight razor, she set about the task of removing his facial hair. Her skill was considerable as she deftly removed large chunks without causing injury. Her smoothly flipping wrist made the operation a fast one, leaving Taylor's face baby's butt smooth. He gave her a large tip as she led him to the nail care area.
An oriental woman greeted Taylor genuinely, bowing to show respect to her latest client. He bowed in return and took his seat, watching her go to town on his fingers. As she worked, they chatted idly about America, Disney in particular, and about her children, something she was intensely proud of. She bragged on her son, who would complete med school this year and go on to a neurosurgery residency in the United States. Taylor congratulated her on his accomplishment, enjoying the pride on her face when speaking of him. While chatting away, she applied a coat of clear polish and used a dryer to speed the final touches along. Happy that all looked in order, she bid Taylor adieu as he gave a generous tip to her as well.
Consulting his mental list, he made his way to the front desk.
"May I help you, sir?" the attendant asked.
"Yes, sir. I'm Taylor Bryant in bungalow 25," he said sheepishly. "I've created a huge mess in the house and need help getting it cleaned up. If you'd be kind enough to send housekeeping in, I'd be glad to pay handsomely for your assistance in this matter."
"Right away, sir," he replied, picking up the phone to get the requested services underway.
Checking that off his list, he went through the front door and walked to a complex of stores on the property. Finding a store that met his needs, he walked in and was quickly greeted by an effusive salesman.
"Good day, sir," the short balding man said. "How may I be of assistance?"
"My name is Taylor Bryant and I'm in need of a new suit. My time is pressed, however. If you could guarantee me that it could be fitted and tailored in two hours, then I would be glad to pay an extra two hundred American dollars for your generous efforts. Is that acceptable to you?" he asked, his debonair ways returning rapidly.
"Of course, sir," the salesman replied, his eyes aglow with dollar signs. "If you'll follow me, we'll begin right now."
Taylor looked at a wide variety of choices, selecting a light brown double breasted coat with matching slacks. With his deep tan and lighter hair, he figured the ensemble would look great on him. The tailors converged and swiftly marked the garment for alteration. Once he'd removed it from his body, they went to work cutting it to fit him ideally. While waiting, he selected a cream colored shirt, a tie and handkerchief set, and a pair of dark brown shoes to complete the new look.
Working efficiently, the tailors came in thirty minutes ahead of schedule, even taking the time to press his new shirt. Taylor charged it all to a credit card, leaving four crisp one hundred dollar bills on the counter.
"Thank your people for a job well done," he said, shaking the salesman's hand and moving back toward his cabana.
Upon entering, he was pleased to see that housekeeping had completed the arduous task of cleaning the place up. The smell of bleach coursed through the air as he regarded the pristine condition the rooms were in. Hanging his suit neatly, he placed one hundred dollars in an envelope he labeled "housekeeping" and placed it on the coffee table in plain sight. Finding his dirty laundry boxed up, he phoned the concierge, asking for it to be washed and pressed. The man agreed readily and dispatched someone to pick it up right away.
Once the soiled garments were gone, he applied an even coat of deodorant to his underarms and brushed his teeth vigorously. One by one, he put the new garments on, the dazzling looks of the past being reborn. The suit gripped him in all the right places, making his slim figure appear fit without seeming too thin. Adjusting the tie and installing the handkerchief in the front pocket, he grabbed his wallet and headed back toward the lobby area.
Passing a man tending a large cart of flowers, Taylor stopped and began examining the available choices. One stuck out right away and he picked it up, smelling the tantalizing aroma. He stared at the white rose bouquet for several seconds, smiling at what they'd meant over the course of his life. Happy with his choice, he paid the man and had them wrapped in gold foil paper with baby's breath.
Continuing on, he moved through the front door and asked the valet to summon a cab for him. The uniformed man shook his head, and blew a whistle, motioning for the next taxi in line to pull forward. Opening the rear door, he guided Taylor inside and then shut it tight, waving for the cabbie to move on. Taylor gave the driver the name of the hotel and off they went.
Coming to the least desirable task on his list, he withdrew his cell phone from a coat pocket, turning it on for the first time in weeks. Noting the battery still had a half charge, he dialed a series of numbers and pressed the device to his ear. A few rings later, the voice he feared facing most answered.
"Taylor, is that you?" Lila asked.
"Yes, mom, it's me," he started. "Before you say anything, I need to say I'm sorry and I know I've been acting like a child. I'm getting better now, and I want you to know that I love you so much and............" His mouth was going a mile a minute when Lila interrupted.
"TAYLOR!" she screamed.
"Yeah, mom," he said, feeling like a small child at her tone.
"Son, you need to listen to me. Where are you?"
Taylor picked up on the concerned tone in her voice. "I'm in a cab on the way to Jordan's hotel to win him back. It's my turn to do some serious ass kissing."
"Taylor," she said gravely, "there's been an accident and Jordan's been injured. They found my card in his wallet and called a little while ago. We don't know how bad things are, but you need to get to him right away. We're about an hour out, so we'll call you when we land. OK, child?"
Instead of answering her, Taylor closed the phone in shock. He instructed the driver to take him to St. George's Hospital instead, and fast, offering twenty dollars if he put the pedal to the metal. The cabbie nodded and pressed hard on the accelerator. Zipping around traffic was scary enough to keep Taylor's mind from jumping to conclusions. The driver skillfully whipped the car around everything in its way, eliciting more than a few honks or shouted obscenities along the way. In record time, the cabbie swerved hard and brought them to a screeching halt. His hands trembling from the wild ride, Taylor dropped a fifty over the seat and jumped out, running hard until he reached the main desk.
Totally out of breath, he said "Jordan Maxwell, please. I'm trying to find Jordan Maxwell." He continued huffing as the woman began to bang away on her keyboard.
"Who are you, sir? Are you family?" the woman asked.
"My name is Taylor, and yes, I'm family. I'm Jordan's husband."
She regarded him with a suspicious look, but said, "Go up to the fourth floor nurse's station. They'll be able to tell you more, sir."
"Thank you, ma'am," Taylor replied while moving in the direction of the elevator. He stepped in and hit the four button. After the doors shut, the car moved quickly upward, reaching his floor in under a minute. Rushing to the station as directed, he asked for Jordan once more.
"Are you family, sir?" the stern looking nurse asked.
"Yes, I am. I'm Taylor Bryant, Jordan's husband."
"Very well," she said. "Have a seat in the family waiting area and Dr. Baxter will see you shortly."
Nodding his understanding, Taylor moved to the room and took a seat. Being still for the first time let his mind run amok with worry.
"Is he alive? If he's alive, will he live? How badly is he hurt? Will he have any lasting problems?" were all questions rolling around in his brain. He cursed himself for letting Jordan leave so upset, holding himself personally responsible for the accident. Hanging his head in shame, he let the tears begin to fall, experiencing great emotional pain. As he wept openly, an American man with a receding hairline came and stood in front of him.
"Mr. Bryant?" he inquired.
"I'm Taylor Bryant," he replied through teary eyes.
"I'm Dr. Arvin Baxter, Mr. Mawell's physician," he said while shaking Taylor's hand. "If you'll come with me, I'll go over what we know so far."
Following him into a room with several chairs and a variety of x-ray viewers, they took a seat so the doctor could give a summary of Jordan's condition.
"Mr. Maxwell has sustained some fairly extensive injuries," he began. "His left arm and leg were broken, as were several of his ribs. He suffered a deep wound to his abdomen, requiring many sutures. Those injuries we were able to attend to. His most pressing concern, however, was the trauma he sustained to his forehead."
Pausing to take a breath, Dr. Baxter continued. "While we find no evidence of bleeding, his brain has swelled some, so we've chosen to keep him sedated until we're satisfied that the swelling will go down permanently."
"Will he be OK?" Taylor asked worriedly.
"If the inflammation in his head does as we hope, then I expect him to recover. He'll be immobile for some time, but with physical therapy and rest, I see no reason he can't live a normal life."
Taylor released an immense sigh of relief. "May I see him?"
"Of course," the doctor answered. "I'll have the nurse take you in." He rose and exited the room, the stern looking woman from earlier coming in moments later.
"Follow me," she instructed.
Leading Taylor down the hall to a closed door, she opened it and allowed him to enter. Patting his shoulder kindly, she said, "If you need anything, just let me know. My name is Stella."
Taylor thanked her as she left the room. Slowly, he moved toward the comatose man. Jordan's left arm and leg were immobilized in casts and his stomach was covered in bandages. An angry bruise occupied the better part of his forehead. Tubes ran to various places on his body, delivering nutrients and medication as needed. An oxygen mask lay over his mouth, his rhythmically shallow breaths coming one after the other. Surveying the scene, Taylor's heart dropped and he sobbed freely.
Realizing he still had the roses clutched in his hand, he arranged them in a water pitcher and put them on the rolling table beside the bed. Pulling it into Jordan's line of sight, he placed their Disney picture against the pitcher so it would be the first thing he saw when he woke up.
Moving a chair close to the right side of the bed, Taylor grasped Jordan's hand and kissed it lovingly.
"I'm so sorry baby," he said. "I really let you down this time." His sobs became louder after finishing that statement.
"I never meant to hurt you, Jordan. I was only doing what I thought was right. I guess I went overboard, like I always do, but I promise I was acting with the best intentions. You're not a child, I know that, but I love you so much that I just can't stand the thought of anyone or anything hurting you. These last two months have been hell, not because I was feeling sorry for myself, which I was, but because I spent them without you."
"I love with you with all my heart, Jordan Maxwell, and I want to be by your side from now on, no matter what. I promise I'll be the man you fell in love with, and I'll do whatever I have to to make sure you're happy and safe."
The tears had stopped, but the sniffles were ongoing. Taylor involuntarily inhaled now and then, as a person who's been crying hard tends to do.
"Just be OK, baby. Whatever we face after that doesn't matter. We'll face it together."
Taylor rested his cheek on Jordan's hand, nuzzling it with his nose. He intended to remain at his side until he woke up. Nearly asleep on the bedside, he was pulled back when his phone began to vibrate incessantly. Looking at the display, he recognized the number as Lila's.
"Hi. Mom," Taylor answered groggily.
"Hello, child. How is he?" she asked.
"All in all, I guess things could be worse," he told her. "His left arm and leg were broken and he's got a nasty cut on his stomach. He hit his head pretty hard, causing some swelling. They're keeping him sedated until they're sure it's going down."
"Thank God it's not worse," she agreed. " We're here now and I want to come see him. Tell me what room you're in and I'll be right over."
"No, mom," Taylor said authoritatively. "There's nothing you can do right now, so get some rest and we'll meet early tomorrow morning. You can see him then."
"Very well, son," she said. "If you need anything, please call me. I can't bear the thought of you sitting alone in that awful place."
"I will, mom," he promised. "Sleep well and I love you."
"I love you too, Taylor."
He hung up and returned to his vigil. The night was long and restless. He woke up every few minutes to check on Jordan, falling back asleep only to repeat the process. He finally fell into a decent slumber when his phone began vibrating again.
"Hello. Mother," he said without looking at the phone.
"Well, hello son," Leonard said back.
"Hey, dad," Taylor said excitedly. "I had no idea you were here."
"Carl is coming up to relieve you for a spell. I doubt you've slept much and some different scenery will do you good," he suggested.
"OK, dad. Send him up and I'll be down in a few minutes." he agreed.
Taylor stood and put his coat back on. Kissing Jordan's hand, he moved from the bed in time for Carl to come in. The two locked eyes for a moment and then joined in a crushing embrace.
"God, it's so good to see you, dad," Taylor said, his voice cracking.
"You too, son. Good to have you back," his father concurred.
After moving apart, Carl examined Jordan's sleeping form. He fought back the urge to cry, wanting to be strong for his newest son. Taylor stood beside him, draping his arm over his father's shoulder for support.
"You'd better go, son. You know how impatient your mother gets. We had a hell of a time keeping her in the lobby," Carl informed him.
"OK, I'll go before she drives the hospital people crazy," he said, giggling. The laughter warmed Carl's heart, giving him a sense that things might just work out alright.
Taylor got in the elevator and began the trip to the lobby level. Smoothing out his outfit and newly coiffed hair one more time, he stood ready to face his mother and surrogate father. The doors opened and he found them standing right outside the car, waiting to go up and hurry things along.
When Lila saw her son looking as he used to, she covered her mouth and got teary eyed. His brilliant smile made her heart leap. She ran to him as he stepped out of the elevator, throwing her arms around him.
"Oh, Taylor. I never thought I'd see you like this again," she cried.
"I'm alright, mom. It's good to be me again," he reassured her.
"I've missed you so, child. Let me look at you." As she'd done with Jordan and Vin, she spread his arms wide and examined him closely. Taylor rolled his eyes as she finished her inspection.
"For Christ's sake, mom," Taylor scolded.
"You just be quiet, child," she chided. "It's a mother's right to make sure her baby has everything in the right places." They laughed at her comment and returned to embracing, the clutching becoming much more intense.
"Don't you leave me like that ever again, Taylor Bryant. You understand me?"
"I promise, mom. I'm here to stay this time."
Taylor repeated the scene with Leonard, so happy to be back with people he loved. Until he saw their faces, he hadn't realized how empty he'd been without them.
"Come on, let's get coffee," Leonard suggested. The three of them followed the signs to the cafeteria, seeking to feed Taylor something while they were there. What he saw upon entering made him grin widely. At a front table sat Thad and Vin, boasting equally amused grins. He moved to them, enduring another round of heartfelt hugs and kisses. Once it was over, Leonard brought Taylor some toast and a large coffee. Everyone sat as he dug into the crisp bread.
"There's some things you aren't aware of," Thad told him. "Jordan agreed to file the lawsuits and sat for a video deposition before coming here. He discovered that he wasn't the only one that got treated like he did. Many things nobody knew came out, and while I can't say what, I will say that he'll need your support more than ever when he wakes up."
"How bad are we talking?" Taylor asked, a concerned look on his face.
"Bad enough," he answered. Taylor nodded and began filling everyone in on what he knew about Jordan's prognosis. They listened intently, relieved to hear that he should be fine if everything went according to plan. Mostly though, they just enjoyed being together again. Small touches or sideways glances were enough to show the happiness everyone was feeling. After an hour respite, Taylor was anxious to return to Jordan's side. They agreed that they'd visit their friend one by one after Carl returned. Going through the hug cycle again, Taylor finally got back in the elevator for the ride upstairs.
Walking toward Jordan's room, Taylor encountered Dr. Baxter doing his morning rounds.
"Good morning, Dr. Baxter," he greeted.
"Ahh, good morning Mr. Bryant," he replied.
"Anything new to report?" Taylor asked hopefully.
"As a matter of fact," the doctor began, "yes there is. I'm very pleased with your young man's progress so far. He's strong and healing nicely. If things remain as they are, I've decided to discontinue his sedatives this afternoon and allow him to become conscious."
Taylor's face lit up. "That's wonderful!"
"I'll be back around three this afternoon. We'll talk again then," the doctor said, extending his hand.
"Thank you so much, Dr. Baxter!" Taylor said, shaking the man's hand excitedly.
Dr. Baxter nodded and returned to seeing his other patients. Taylor continued back down the hallway with a new bounce to his step. He entered the room with a Cheshire cat grin on his face.
"What's got you so happy?" Carl asked, noticing his look.
"Dr. Baxter said Jordan's doing so well that they might wake him up later today," Taylor told him gleefully.
"That's wonderful, son," said Carl, placing his land lovingly on his Taylor's shoulder. "Everything's gonna be fine soon. I hope you realize that."
"I know, dad," Taylor replied, rubbing the hand that was touching him.
For a few seconds, the two men just stared at Jordan with happy smiles. Taylor then explained the visitation program to Carl, asking him to send Lila up first (as if there was a choice in that matter). When she came in, it was obvious that Carl had shared the good news with everyone. She ran to Taylor and hugged him tight, anxious to see her two boys moving on together. Placing a kiss on his cheek, she took the seat next to the bed and offered words of encouragement to the sleeping Jordan.
"You come back to us, child. Our family's not whole without you. Thanks to you, I've got one son back and I need the other at my side too. Fight hard, son, fight hard!" She kissed his hand and rose from the chair. Patting Taylor's chest, she gave him a loving look and left the room so the next person could have their turn.
Leonard came in next. Knowing Jordan needed his healing time, he bent over and whispered a few short words in his ear. After adding his kiss to the mix, he placed one on Taylor's cheek and moved to leave as well. Before he was gone, though, Taylor made a request which Leonard agreed to handle. Minutes later, that request became reality when Thad and Vin came in together.
Vin couldn't help becoming misty eyed at the sight of Jordan. He looked so helpless and fragile, a sight his friend hated seeing. Clutching Thad for strength, he moved to the bedside chair and took his friend's hand gently.
"Hey, Jordan, it's Vin," he said. "You've got to get better, bud. I need your help to stand up to these two bullies we're in love with." Thad and Taylor rolled their eyes at that one.
"Seriously, I don't wanna live without my best friend in my life. I just got you back and I'll be damned if I'm going to let you get away this easily. Come back to us soon, OK?" he said softly. Thad rubbed his shoulders in a comforting manner, hating to see his husband hurting like this.
As they prepared to leave, Taylor spoke up. "Would you guys stay for a while?"
They eagerly nodded yes and set about finding more chairs. Thad hunted up some coffee and the three men settled in to wait for the doctor's return. Having them around was a great help to Taylor. They talked a lot, covering topics from those that were serious to those that were hilarious. It felt so good to have their team together again.
Leonard, ever the caretaker, took it upon himself to bring Taylor several changes of clothes and his toiletries kit. Taylor thanked him profusely and happily shed the monkey suit in favor of some jean shorts, a plain t-shirt and his new flops. It was much more comfortable than the formal wear he'd been stuck in for the last twenty four hours.
Three O'clock came and went, the men becoming antsy for the physician's return. Taylor had taken to looking down the hallway every five minutes while Vin never took his eyes from the large wall clock. Thad got them involved in a game of hearts to pass the time, but things still moved at an agonizingly slow pace. Shortly before 6 P.M., Dr. Baxter finally showed up.
"I apologize for my tardiness, gentlemen, but I was detained by an unavoidable emergency," he informed them. They nodded their understanding, still annoyed at the lack of punctuality.
The doctor moved to Jordan and examined him closely. Spending time checking pupil response and heartbeat, he seemed pleased at what he found. Taking one of the tubes running to Jordan's arm, he moved a switch downward, cutting off the medication it had been feeding steadily. He then turned to address the gathered group.
"Gentlemen, I've turned off the sedative drip to Mr. Maxwell. It could still be several hours before he awakens. I warn you, he could be very disoriented and feeling some serious pain when he comes to. Don't be alarmed, as we're expecting this. Once he's conscious, I'll examine him again to see if things are as hopeful as I suspect they'll be. For now, just let him see some familiar faces when he opens his eyes."
The men thanked him and moved closer to Jordan's bed. Taylor took up residence at his right hand, holding it lovingly and idly stroking his knuckles. He arranged for Lila, Leonard and Carl to join them, as everyone hunkered down to wait for Jordan to rejoin them.
For five hours there were no meaningful changes. Jordan stirred a little and occasionally squeezed Taylor's hand, but his eyes remained closed. Dr. Baxter checked on him several times, appearing calm at his unconscious state. Worry silently set in on the assembled family, though. As time slid by, exhaustion forced Lila, Leonard and Carl to depart with a promise to return soon. Taylor, Vin and Thad refused to budge, however. They were determined to be here when Jordan woke up, feeling it was critical for him to see three important faces. Unable to remain focused during the laborious vigil, however, the three succumbed to sleep as the trying day finally took its toll.
In the wee hours of the morning, the momentous event they'd all been praying for finally happened. Jordan's closed eyes began to move rapidly, and his heavy eyelids slowly came open.
At first, his sight was very blurry, only seeing blobs of color splashed around him. One particular shape caught his eye and he focused on it intently. With a lot of blinking and effort, the foggy mass slowly became sharper. On the table before him was a stunning arrangement of white roses with something propped up below them. Attempting to look around him, Jordan found that he couldn't maneuver his left side. Moving his head was a chore too, as his skull screamed with pain. Trying to remain as still as possible, he stared at the flowers until his vision had returned to somewhere closer to normal.
Able to see more clearly, Jordan carefully looked around the room again. His first sight was two men curled up in a chair sleeping peacefully. Even though he was hurting terribly, the sight instilled a sense of warmth within him. The mask on his face had become uncomfortable, so he attempted to use his right hand to adjust it. When he went to move the hand, however, he found it trapped by the head of another slumbering figure. With great effort, he managed to wriggle it free and cast off the annoying device.
He stared at the head lying face down next to him, trying to figure out who this might be. Unable to determine an identity without seeing a face, he ran his fingers lightly through the neatly cropped locks. The unknown person began to slowly stir as Jordan kept up his ministrations.
Taylor felt a foreign sensation outside his dream state. It felt like fingers stroking his scalp, and it felt wonderful. He luxuriated in the feel for several moments until his brain registered that this was no dream. Opening his eyes, he was able to confirm that someone was indeed touching his hair. The realization of who was doing this hit him hard. Lifting his head, he saw Jordan's open eyes staring down at him.
"Hey, baby," he said softly, taking Jordan's hand in his once again.
"Where am I?" he asked hoarsely.
"You're in the hospital, babe. There was an accident and you've been out for a while," Taylor related slowly, not wanting to overload him with facts.
"What happened?" Jordan inquired, pressing for more information.
"Best we can tell, you were in a scooter crash and smacked into a mountain side. Luckily, a motorist saw the whole thing and got the paramedics there in a hurry," Taylor explained.
Jordan was silent as he processed what he'd been told. He had vague recollections of the event, but the memories were very hazy and sporadic. There was no doubt about one thing, however. The face before him belonged to Taylor Bryant, and he couldn't help but feel thankful he was here.
"Can I get you anything?" Taylor asked.
"Thirsty," was all Jordan could muster.
Vin woke up and immediately glanced at his watch. Seeing that it was 4 A.M., he glanced down at his sleeping partner and then looked over to see if Taylor had succumbed as well. He was startled to see the man gone and immediately looked up and saw that Jordan was awake. He shook Thad furiously and stepped closer to the bed.
"Hi, honey. Welcome back," he told his friend.
"Hi," Jordan whispered.
Before anything else could be said, Nurse Stella entered with a pitcher of water and a cup with a straw sticking out of it. Taylor followed right on her heels. She asked him some standard questions, such as his name, birth date and so on. Satisfied with the answers, she filled the cup and helped Jordan take a few sips. The water was like the nectar of the gods to the parched man. The excitement proved to be too much, however, and he soon fell back asleep. Taylor, Thad and Vin quietly celebrated his awakening, thrilled that the long road back had begun.
For the next week, things moved forward as expected. Lila had Jordan moved to a nicer room and had a bed rolled in for her son to sleep on. Jordan still moved in and out of consciousness, but Dr. Baxter assured them that was normal. By the end of the week, he was able to stay awake for several hours at a time. The pain receded from excruciating stabs to dull aches, and the staff reduced the potent pain medications. His memories of the accident and the events leading up to it sharpened over time, but he chose not to discuss it until his strength was greater.
Taylor was a champ through everything. He remained at his side, standing ready to fetch water or sponge off Jordan's sweaty body. He became so in tune with his man's needs that he was usually able to anticipate them before being asked. Jordan was very appreciative of all he was doing, but was still plagued by what he recalled about the time before the accident. He chose to remain zoned on healing his broken body for the time being, though.
The staff eventually decided it was time for Jordan to get out of bed. A group of nurses helped him up, carefully schooling Taylor on the right way to accomplish this. He felt dizzy and nauseous when he was pulled upright the first time, glad Taylor was there to steady him as his supporting leg began to buckle. They put him in a wheelchair, explaining that he'd be using one like it until his arm had healed enough to remove the cast. Taylor thanked them for their help and pushed the chair toward the elevator. Reaching the lobby, an orderly held the door as he wheeled Jordan outside and into the fresh ocean air.
The warm sunshine was just the elixir needed. As his skin heated up, Jordan basked in its goodness, feeling alive and a little reenergized. Noticing a large shade tree with a bench underneath, Jordan pointed at it and directed Taylor to head there. Getting the chair placed securely, Taylor took a seat and regarded the beautiful day going on around him. Jordan chose this moment to broach the subject that had been bothering him for the last few days.
"Taylor," he began, "I think we need to talk."
"About what, baby?" he asked, leaning closer to his man.
"About what's happened to us and about the time right before the accident," Jordan responded.
Taylor became nervous and uncomfortable. He knew this time was coming, but he felt unprepared to discuss it. Acceding to Jordan's wishes, though, he reluctantly agreed.
"OK, where should we begin?"
Jordan thought for a second and said, "What happened to you? Last time I saw you, I didn't recognize even a shred of the man you'd become."
Taylor took a deep breath. It was time to face the music and hope for the best.
"You were right," he said. "I spent two months blaming myself for what had happened and swimming in a pool of self hate and pity. It consumed me, and I guess I lost my way."
"What's to keep it from happening again?" Jordan asked with deep concern.
"Not much, really, except the fact that I love you with all my heart and I can't live without you," Taylor said confidently.
Jordan considered the answer, unsure of what he felt or wanted. "I know you love me, Taylor. I'm not a child, though. You can't try and keep me shielded from things you find hurtful or emotional. I need my own life, and I have to be honest. I'm not sure there's a place in it for you anymore."
Taylor was floored. He'd assumed that things were slowly getting better for them, and Jordan's words tore through him like a bullet.
"Baby, don't say that," he begged. "I've grown up a lot and I know what I have to do now. Please give us another chance."
"I don't know," he said warily. "I need time to think about things. I know nothing can be like it was. I'm not that person anymore."
"Anything you want, baby. You name it and it's yours," Taylor said. "Just don't give up yet. I know we can make this work."
Jordan began to tear up. "Take me back in and go see Lila for a while. I'll call you later."
Even though every fiber of his being wanted to fight for their future, Taylor complied with the request. He wheeled Jordan back to the room and helped get him comfortably situated. He planted a small kiss on his man's cheek and disappeared from sight, leaving Jordan with his thoughts.
Now alone, Jordan began to go over the pros and cons of the decision he had to make. He was extremely angry with Taylor over the words they'd exchanged that fateful day, blaming him for the accident that left him broken. Still, there was plenty of history between them, most of it heartwarming and magical. Jordan's major worry was how Taylor would react if the going got tough again. Would he run away once more? Jordan couldn't live through this all over again. He sighed aloud, no closer to knowing what the right path to follow was.
Nurse Stella came in and noticed him brooding. After checking his vitals, and adjusting the pillow behind his head, she stepped to the fully open roses, inhaling their intoxicating perfume.
"They certainly are beautiful," she commented.
"Yes, they are," Jordan agreed, still battling with his demons.
"He loves you a lot, ya know," she said. "I can see it in his eyes."
Jordan looked dead at her. "Sometimes, love isn't enough," he replied sadly.
Stella sat down on the edge of the bed, and picked up the photo beneath the roses. She studied it carefully, smiling at the scene portrayed. "These two people look mighty happy together if you ask me," she finally said.
"We were," Jordan responded with a fire in his eyes. "I'd never been happier than I was that day. The world was perfect."
"Hmmmm," she said, "seems kinda sad to let that all slip away." Patting Jordan's leg, she lay the photo on his chest and left the room.
"She's got a point," Jordan admitted to himself.
Taylor did make him happier than any man he'd ever been with. His golden heart, childish smile and great need to please everyone around him were positively endearing. Those qualities combined to make Jordan feel loved and happy like never before. Simple touches lit him up in ways he didn't think conceivable. Actions like holding hands, sitting on his lap, or touching their heads together had redefined these simple gestures. The simple things Taylor did without realizing it made Jordan's heart swoon. So many times, he'd wanted to devour the man and make him a permanent part of his soul. Just thinking of these things made Jordan crave more.
The likelihood that things Taylor saw as trivial might disappear scared the hell out of him. He saw his man as someone who was convinced that his money and stature meant more than showing what was in his heart through uncomplicated actions. While the trips and jets were nice, they were perks of the relationship. He'd told Taylor that he'd rather spend his life with a poor man who he truly loved as opposed to a rich man he didn't. Taylor seemed to understand, but not accept, what Jordan had been trying to tell him. The exhilarating exercises had continued, but their meaning seemed to get lost in the shuffle.
When all was said and done, Jordan's main problem with Taylor was relatively plain. The man saw things one way and only one way.......his way. There didn't seem to be much room for alternate interpretation. He was so intractable this way. Jordan felt like a fool who'd been wined and dined, then expected to live as someone else saw fit. This wasn't and never could be acceptable. True love was a fifty-fifty joint venture that took both of their wants and opinions into account, not an act designed to bolster one man's ideals. While Taylor had never belittled him outright, his actions had spoken louder than words.
As Stella came back and administered his night time shots, she noticed the battle fatigue on his face. Instead of involving herself in things that weren't her business, she stood close by, allowing her innate tenderness to say what she had to say. Jordan sensed the warmth and accepted it. As medicine induced euphoria set in, he relived the good times again. All the angst he felt faded as his eyes became heavy and sleep took over. Once he passed out, Stella bent down and laid a small kiss on his cheek.
"Rest, sweetie," she whispered. "Dream good things." Jordan smiled and did just that.
While Jordan slipped into a worry free world, Taylor sat in Lila's suite moping. He was pissed at everyone and everything around him. Foolishly, he thought cleaning up and being his man's servant would make things alright again. The frustration at his failure was a bleeding wound. He longed to lash out and make someone, anyone, feel as badly as he did. Feeling so many intense emotions coursing through him, he wasn't sure whether to punch something or just scream out loud.
Lila sat across from her son, sensing the animal urges in the air. She sympathized with Taylor, yet disapproved of his reactions to the latest stress. Maybe she could see things more clearly because she was an outsider, or because she was a mother. In any case, this poor behavior couldn't be tolerated any longer.
"Grow up, child!" she announced, ready to give Taylor the dose of reality he had coming.
Taylor gave Lila a look filled with poison. What he wanted right then was silence, not someone intent on cutting off his pity party.
"Be quiet, mom!" he yelled. "I've got a lot on my mind and need time to think."
"I've been silent long enough!" she shot back. "You can be the most spoiled, ungrateful little imp I've ever met!"
Taylor's anger boiled over. "I don't need your shit too, mom! I don't wanna talk about this!"
Lila's face tightened as she fought back her own anger with ardor. "Don't you ever speak to me like that again, Taylor Bryant! I'm not one of your throwaway men and I refuse to be treated like one. If you don't wanna talk, fine, but you can god damn well listen!" she railed.
Since cursing was a big no no for her, the profanity got Taylor's undivided attention.
"For as long as I've known you," Lila started, " you've had very defined ideas of how your world should be. Anything and anyone who didn't fit within your stifling guidelines was cast off like garbage. People are naturally attracted to your confidence and charisma, making you dangerous, dangerous because if they love you and don't fit your mold, then they stand to be crushed."
"You have the biggest heart I've known, Taylor, but instead of letting it free and living life without walls, you've chosen to make those you care about become at home in your prison. Yes, Taylor, it is a prison, a zone where you're at home but everyone else is captive," she asserted.
"Go to hell, mom!" Taylor yelled back. "You have no idea what you're talking about!"
"Don't I?" she asked. "You're so much like your father, and I knew him better than anyone. He tried to shape himself into whatever he needed to be so those he wanted to conquer saw him as important. That's what you have in common most, son.....your basic need to conquer. The difference with you is, you're an unyielding force, so perfect that change is beside the point. You expect those you suck in to do the changing and conform to your narrow views. You're no different than a dictator in that sense!"
Taylor shifted in his seat. He was unaccustomed to Lila being so harsh. Resigning himself to letting her finish, he kept his mouth shut for the time being.
"Son, everyone has different likes and dislikes in this world. Our varying opinions are what make us so great. No one person should be allowed to quell another's spirit because it doesn't jive with how they see things! It's preposterous that you expected Jordan to take you back like nothing's happened, especially with the way you've acted!" she yelled.
"Jesus Christ!" Taylor screamed. "I was trying to help him, dammit! Get that through your thick skull, mother. It was obvious he needed my guidance to see all the good that could come from his actions. I figured that you, of all people, would support what I tried to do."
Lila took a deep breath. She prided herself on maintaining self control at all times. This altercation, however, was pushing her limits badly. Her son was operating in the dark on the latest happenings, and he deserved to know. What she couldn't decide was whether or not it was her place to fill him in. If Jordan wasn't going to, then someone would have to do it for him.
"Sweetheart," she said calmly, "there's a lot you don't know about what happened to Jordan. Those things are the reason he fought you so hard, but you were too focused on your goals to see it."
"Enlighten me, then!" he demanded.
"I can't, although I'd love to. I don't have Jordan's permission to share the story with you, and I won't betray his trust. Maybe you should ask him," she suggested.
Taylor became quiet as his curiosity got the best of him. Knowing that Lila took issues of confidence very seriously, he dropped the matter for now and stormed out of the room.
Thad and Vin lay in bed listening to the whole exchange between Taylor and Lila. They were fortunate to know the details of Jordan's ordeal, and felt bad that Taylor remained out of the loop. Both thought he deserved to know everything, but Jordan had not waived his privilege, binding Thad to secrecy. Those who did know had heard it from the man himself. Vin knew that something had to be done so Taylor could realize his errors and move to correct them.
"He needs to know," he said to Thad as he lay on his chest.
"I agree," Thad replied, "but you know I could lose my license if I violated client confidentiality. Worse yet, I could lose a good friend."
Vin sighed. "Baby, we're losing a good friend now. Couldn't you speak to Jordan and recommend that Taylor be told the whole story?"
Thad stiffened at the request. He was walking a fine line between a great many things right now. He was facing a complicated case, while trying to balance the needs of his husband and friends at the same time. It was a tough situation.
"Alright, snookie," he said, using his private name for Vin. "I'll try. Let's get some sleep and I'll go see him in the morning."
Vin kissed his husband's lips and snuggled in closer. "I love you, baby."
"Love you too," Thad said as they drifted to sleep.
Taylor's night was fitful, waking up many times as he tried to figure out what everyone else knew. He guessed that Rollins was somehow involved. He knew the man well, and also knew his sense of ethics was very suspect. What could that idiot have done to hurt his man so badly? Many possibilities ran through his mind, but none seemed plausible. Most involved breaching Jordan's strength of character in one form or another, and he found that scenario impossible to accept. Several hours later, and fully unable to sleep, he rose for the day and decided that a walk on the beach might help him think more clearly. He got ready quickly and headed out, his mind still buzzing with questions that had no answers.
Thad rose early as well. He heard Taylor leave, feeling relieved he wouldn't have to explain his own departure. After finishing his morning preparations, he headed outside and was fortunate to find a taxi available. On the way to the hospital, he made a few stops, his legal mind encouraging him to be armed and ready to face likely opposition in getting to Jordan. With all needed weapons in hand, he returned to the taxi and was soon dropped off at the main entrance.
His arrival on the floor at this early hour, one that was way before the prescribed visiting times, was not greeted well. He was glad he'd come prepared to fight such a battle. Setting a box and some trays on the counter, he produced a variety of donuts and coffee for the morning medical staff. As he'd hoped, resistance melted away as they thanked him profusely for his kind gesture. Thad played it up gregariously, belittling his generosity and telling the staff they'd earned it. As the men and women dug into the sumptuous sweets, not a thing was said as Thad moved down the hall and went to Jordan's room. Phase one of his plan had gone off without a hitch.
He was surprised to find Jordan lying awake and alert at this early hour. Jordan was equally shocked to see someone other than a nurse or doctor enter his room.
"Morning," Thad said brightly.
"Morning," Jordan replied suspiciously. "How'd you get in here so early?"
"Let's just say I used my powers of persuasion," Thad said, drawing another doubtful look. "And I kissed a lot of ass."
Jordan smiled and started giggling. He knew Thad was good, but he was willing to bet that his attorney was award worthy this time.
"Hungry?" Thad asked, having a good idea of the answer.
"Starving!" Jordan exclaimed. "I can't stand to eat anymore of the prison food they serve, though."
"Glad I came when I did then. I saw the warden giving out the gruel for the day when I got off the elevator," he joked.
Thad placed a bag and a large cup in front of Jordan. Inside the sack, he discovered three chocolate frosted doughnuts topped with rainbow sprinkles. The cup was a double mocha latte from Starbucks, complete with extra whipped cream. Jordan's mouth watered as he looked at the delicacies before him.
"Jesus, Thad, it's like you read my mind!" he said excitedly.
"Well, dig in kid," he said laughing.
As Jordan began to eat happily, Thad looked over his client's appearance. The bruise on his forehead wasn't nearly as angry, changing from a vibrant purple to a more subtle blue with tinges of brown in it. His skin was rosier, losing the pallid tone it had taken on at first. His eyes had life in them now, attesting to the fact that his body was indeed on the mend. As each bite brought moans of pleasure from Jordan, Thad found a seat and brought things around to the purpose of his early morning visit.
"Jordan," he began, "I need to speak to you as your lawyer for a moment."
The statement caused him to stop mid bite and give Thad a curious look. "Is everything OK?" he asked worriedly.
"Everything's fine," Thad assured him, "but I have a request of a more personal nature that needs your permission."
"Anything you need is fine, you know that," Jordan informed him as he resumed his interrupted feast.
"Hear me out first," Thad said, "and then decide. OK?"
"OK," Jordan answered.
"I want you to allow me to tell Taylor about everything you've been through," he said.
Jordan set his drink down and looked Thad in the eye. It was a major request.
"Don't you think I should tell him?" Jordan asked.
"Yes, I do, but with all you've been through, it's not surprising you haven't. Vin and I think you should continue to focus on recovering. I'm not sure you're ready to face what might come after he knows. Furthermore, he trusts me and I can present the facts and only the facts. I love you guys a lot, but I'm not as intimately involved as you are. I really think he deserves to know," Thad stated.
Jordan stared at some unknown spot in space as he pondered Thad's words. Taylor did deserve to know what had happened, that much was clear. Who should tell him was less obvious. He really wanted to be the one, but his current physical state might worsen with the outpouring of emotion that was sure to follow. Maybe Thad was right. A third party who knew the particulars might be the wisest choice. Returning his eyes to Thad's, he took a deep breath and made a decision.
"OK, go ahead," was all he could say.
Thad smiled and placed his hand atop Jordan's. "Thank you," he offered.
"Be easy with him," Jordan said.
"You can count on me," Thad said sincerely.
He stayed for a while longer as Jordan resumed his meal. They talked about his progress and when he might be able to leave. Thad was surprised to find that the doctor might release him in the next day or two. That development put some pressure on his timetable. He needed to get to Taylor, and soon. Wrapping up his visit quickly, he left the hospital and returned to collect Vin so they could locate their friend.
Taylor's morning stroll evolved into a three mile run. It felt good to push his body hard, and he'd released a good amount of pent up stress. His lack of adherence to his exercise regimen was plain though, making him sweaty and winded when he returned to his starting point. He put his hands on his knees and propped himself up while he tried to catch his breath. Once it became more normal, he stripped of his shirt and headed into the surf. He swam out a ways and took to floating on his back, something he did often as a child. While rocking effortlessly in the calm water, he let his mind go and focused on relaxing totally.
He looked back at his actions to date, admitting to himself he could have been more caring than he had. He considered his mother's stern words. They may have been direct and brusque, but they were correct. He already knew he needed to change his ways, but now, and more importantly, he wanted to. In the past, he'd tried really hard to act differently, but his old ways returned no matter how hard he fought them. This time, however, there was a prize worth fighting for, a reward so great he was willing to die trying to win it. He had to have Jordan back, no matter the cost. If it took becoming a new person to achieve that, then he'd be better off regardless of the outcome.
As he drifted toward shore still lost in thought, he eventually reached shallow waters and his butt dragged along the bottom. It broke his deep reverie, so he crawled forward some and sat upright, allowing the small waves to course over his lap. The water was warm and felt wonderful as it rolled over his legs and abdomen. He threw his head back, closed his eyes and enjoyed the pleasurable sensation.
When he opened his eyes, he saw Vin and Thad coming toward him, both outfitted in board shorts and carrying towels. He waved at them as they got closer, motioning for them to join him. They dropped their towels and made their way to his side, assuming flanking positions in the water.
"I love how warm the water is," Vin said once seated. "Feels glorious!"
Taylor smiled at him, noting his use of an overly positive adjective. He longed to remain as bright spirited as his friend always did.
For a short time, they just enjoyed being in the ocean, everyone relaxing and taking in the sun's hot rays. They were there for a purpose, though, one that Vin was anxious to be done with.
"Can we talk for a minute?" he asked Taylor.
"Sure," Taylor said, "what's up?"
Vin cast Thad a look, receiving a nod of understanding.
"I saw Jordan this morning," he started. "He looks better. Says the doctor might let him go home in a day or two."
"That's great!" Taylor exclaimed, sitting more upright.
"I asked him to let me tell you about all that's happened and he agreed," Thad said quickly.
Taylor cast a look of shock at Thad as he moved closer to hear the story.
Thad spent the next half hour going over the facts as Jordan had presented them in the deposition. He left no detail out as Taylor listened silently. When he got into the forced sexual encounters, Taylor's body stiffened visibly and his anger levels climbed. As the tale neared its conclusion, he could stand no more and exploded in rage.
"I'll kill that son of a bitch!" he screamed. "If he thinks he can do this to Jordan, he's got another thing coming!"
"Relax, Taylor," Thad advised, "we've got that under control. Jordan wants to hit them hard and make the effect lasting. When this is over, nobody will soon forget the name Jordan Maxwell."
"Damn right they won't!" Taylor spat. "I'm gonna use a knife to carve Jordan's name in his cheeks. That should be the lasting punch he's looking for!"
"TAYLOR!" Vin screeched. "Stop it, dammit! Stop it now! This is the same attitude that drove Jordan away in the first place!"
There it was. Taylor's failure as a man and partner was laid out before them. He wanted to argue, protest at the gross inaccuracy of it all, but there was nothing to say. Staring at Vin with his mouth wide open, the reality of it all smacked him in the face like a brick. Tears began to fall as the walls crashed down around him.
"I'm such an idiot!" he exclaimed. "I didn't see any of this happening. How could I have been so blind?"
He understood what Lila had been trying to tell him perfectly now. If he had cared enough to look, he'd have noticed Jordan's apprehension and could have figured out that something else was wrong. He felt guilty, solely responsible for all the trouble they'd been through, and hung his head in shame.
"It's not your fault," Vin comforted. He rubbed Taylor's shoulder softly as the man collapsed into a fit of sobs. He wrapped his arms around him tightly, as Thad joined the consolation from the other side.
"He's right, Taylor. Not even people Jordan worked with every day knew about any of this," Thad agreed.
"None of those people were his lover," Taylor whispered sadly. "I'm supposed to sense problems with my partner, not be so concerned about myself that I don't see shit!"
"What you did then isn't as important as what you do now," Vin pointed out.
"It may never be the same as it was, but you guys love each other and that alone is worth fighting hard for," Thad added.
Taylor knew they were right, but his fear of failure was greater than ever. He had much to atone for, and wanted to start as soon as possible. Rising out of the water, the three friends walked hand in hand back to the hotel, hopeful that things would be on the mend soon.
Back in his bungalow, Taylor stripped naked and hopped in the shower. He lolled in the steaming water as it washed the remnants of salt water and sand from his body. The accumulated tension in his muscles receded and his thoughts began to clear. While he soaped his body generously, he began to formulate some guidelines in his head. They involved a set of principles he'd apply to his actions toward Jordan and others from now on. Being respectful of their opinions and desires was the obvious start. He'd gone on far too long with blinders on and he cared for Jordan too much to keep up the way he had. The second was asking his man what he wanted. Everything they'd done and experienced together had been according to Taylor's desires. What Jordan wanted and needed had been ignored, something Taylor wasn't proud of. His final thought centered around a public commitment to change. He wanted everyone around them to know he wasn't the same man. He knew that things wouldn't be different overnight, but he was in this for the duration, be it twenty days or twenty years. The key to starting this process was Jordan, and Taylor needed to be near him as soon as possible. He finished his shower, dried off and dressed quickly, ready to head toward his man and a return to their life together.
Meanwhile, Jordan lie in his bed fraught with worry. He knew Thad must have talked to Taylor by now, but he hadn't seen or heard from any of them. He wanted to call someone and find out how it went, but his fear of the unknown kept him from dialing. He tried watching TV, reading, napping...all without success. Even a visit from Dr. Baxter with the good news he could leave the following day failed to ease his worry. Until he knew more, his couldn't see his release as good news. Where would he go? What life was he going back to? These questions and more burned within him as he watched the seconds tick by.
Taylor wasted no time and summoned a taxi once outside. Following Thad's lead, he had the cabbie drive through McDonald's, where he bought Big Mac meals for two. They drove on to the hospital, and soon Taylor was greeting the staff with food in hand. Reaching Jordan's door, he took a short breath and pushed in. The sight took Jordan's breath away.
"Damn he looks hot!" Jordan thought to himself.
Taylor did look sexy. He'd chosen a pair of form fitting jeans that hung low on his hips. He wore a tight faded maroon t-shirt that accentuated his pecs and contoured to the rest of his body perfectly. His lighter hair and darker skin brought the look together, giving him an air of raw sex appeal. Jordan's groin tingled as he watched him move, the first time his cock had twitched since the accident. Beyond the physical appearance, though, something else was different. The wide smile and blazing eyes trumpeted his renewed determination, wrapping Jordan up in hope. Taylor swaggered in and kissed his man's lips lightly.
"Hey, baby," he said pleasantly.
"Hey, yourself," Jordan said back, not sure to what to make of his bubbly man. "What's in the bag?"
"I thought you might be hungry, so I brought a gourmet meal for two," Taylor said, setting the fast food feast in Jordan's lap. He laughed hard at the "exquisite" meal.
"It may not be five star, but I think this is going to be the best lunch I've ever had!" he exclaimed.
Taylor arranged the food so Jordan could get into it easily. Once everything was set, they began to eat. As with the doughnuts, the burger elicited moans of pleasure from Jordan. He felt like a condemned man eating his last meal as he savored every bite. Dining on the slop he'd been served lately made him forget how something as simple as a Big Mac could be so wonderful. He vowed not to take it for granted again.
As they dined, Jordan couldn't help but stare at Taylor. The funny feeling in his stomach returned, as it did every time he was in this man's presence. The butterflies were partly due to their pending conversation, but most were from the extreme feelings he felt when Taylor was near. Something about him had changed, and Jordan couldn't put his finger on it. Whatever the `it' was, he was happy to accept its positive energy. He felt himself blushing as he admired the man in front of him. In embarrassment, he broke his stare and focused his eyes on the burger he'd nearly consumed.
Taylor noticed the looks and the blush, grateful to know Jordan noticed the change in the air. They had a serious talk coming, but it was fun to be playful with each other again. Taylor didn't break his stare, enjoying how Jordan became suddenly shy. They'd shared the ultimate intimacy two men can experience, yet seeing his man react like this was better in some ways. Taylor continued the silent assault until they finished eating. He cleared the trash and made sure Jordan was comfortable. Taking his seat again, he took Jordan's hand and began talking.
"I talked with Thad and Vin earlier," he said. Jordan's body tensed as Taylor continued.
"They told me about Rollins and what happened. Even told me about Charlie and how he gave you the strength to face all this crap. I gotta say, I was really shocked."
Jordan began to tear up, fearing the worst. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you myself," he choked out.
Taylor pulled his hand up and kissed it lovingly. "Don't be sorry, baby. It's me who should be sorry. None of what they told me matters! I pushed you to do this, and never saw the pain I was causing you. I had it in my mind that nothing was going to stop me, and I sent you over the edge. Can you ever forgive me?"
Jordan sobbed harder. He was relieved to know Taylor didn't hate him. He was left speechless by the frank admission, a totally uncharacteristic thing for Taylor to do. He wanted nothing more than to hold him close at that very moment.
"I make you this promise, Jordan," he continued. "I'm gonna be a changed man from now on. I know this is gonna take time, and I'll slip up sometimes. I expect you to call me out and kick my ass when I fall backwards. I've never wanted anything as badly as I want you, and if I go on like I have, then that's impossible."
Jordan's heart raced and his palms sweat. Every cell in his body was abuzz with excitement. The man he longed to spend his life with was playing music to his ears, increasing the desire to spend eternity with him.
"I love you, Jordan and I don't wanna live without you. Please give us another chance. I swear it'll be everything you want and more."
"I love you too," he managed to say between sobs. "Please don't leave me alone. I wanna be with you too from now on!"
He pulled Taylor forward, hard. They embraced hungrily as a rush of emotion overcame them. Both men cried openly, relieved to be in each others arms once again. As in the past, no words were spoken. The contact said enough as they tried to press harder together.
Taylor pulled back and stared dreamily into Jordan's eyes. "I really do love you," was all he said before smashing their lips together. Jordan's heart melted as their tongues rammed each other zealously. He tightened his grip and pushed forward rampantly into Taylor's mouth, devouring any part he touched. He felt his man's tongue grope wantonly around his own mouth, increasing the furor he felt to attack him right there. He was ashamed of his carnal desires at such a poignant moment, but he hadn't had an opportunity for satisfaction in some time. Most importantly, though, Taylor always increased these desires exponentially.
The heat of passion was, sadly, also what brought Jordan crashing down from his high peak. As his cock began to harden, the muscles in his abdomen cramped and started screaming with pain. He took several short sharp breaths and sat perfectly still, waiting for the spasms to pass. Taylor saw his contorted face and reacted with fear.
"Jordan, baby, are you OK? What's wrong?" he asked worriedly.
Jordan didn't respond. He continued lying still as the over stimulated muscles tightened hard, causing his eyes to water in anguish. The cut on his stomach was deep and tender, a fact he hadn't taken into account when they began their romantic interlude. Slowly, the pain came to a more tolerable level, and he began to breathe more normally. When the cramp subsided, he addressed the look of fright on Taylor's face.
"Damn, that hurt!" he said.
"What hurts, baby? Do you need the doctor?" Taylor said in a panicked tone.
"No doctor," Jordan insisted. "I'm alright now."
Taylor regarded him suspiciously.
Jordan took Taylor's hand in his. "Seriously, I'm fine. Just a little cramp."
Taylor's face took on a look of guilt. He'd hurt his amazing man, and regretted it fiercely.
"Oh god, baby, I hurt you!" he said sorrowfully. "I swear I didn't mean to!"
Jordan smiled thoughtfully at the kind words. This new and improved Taylor met with his approval and gave him a sense that the special times of the past might return one day.
"You've done nothing wrong baby," Jordan explained. "I can honestly say I've never wanted you worse, but I'm still tender in places. I'm afraid we'll have to wait a while to celebrate in our special way."
Taylor nodded in agreement, but didn't relax. His skin was pale and clammy as sweat beaded on his brow. The muscles in his face were tense, making him look like a man who'd seen a ghost. His hands trembled involuntarily and his heart hammered away. The moment was one of the scariest he'd encountered, and it had a profound effect on him.
"Shit," he said as his eyes began to water. "I thought I was losing you!"
Jordan's smile waned and he gingerly scooted over, patting the space beside him. Once Taylor moved in, he adjusted his body so he could lay his head on the man's shoulder.
"I'm not going anywhere. It was just a muscle spasm near my cut, but it's gone now so everything's alright," he said.
Taylor took Jordan's arm and put it over his shoulders. He gripped his hand firmly and lay his head atop his lover's.
"Jesus, that scared me," he admitted. "I don't think I could survive being without you again."
Jordan bought Taylor's hand to his mouth and kissed it in several different places. He then turned his head and made eye contact with him.
"You don't have to live without me, Taylor, now or ever!" he promised.
The earnest words brought their mouths together again. The kiss was much different this time, though. Their lips brushed together softly as they remained still and enjoyed the feeling. Their mouths parted and their tongues contacted one another slowly. There was no urgency this time, no battles for domination. Instead, the tongues rolled lazily across one another, inching across the others length. They would move back and come forward again in unison, filling their owners with love as opposed to lust.
Once they parted, the two pressed their noses and foreheads together, extreme emotion passing between them. They were content to stay like this for some time without speaking. Their hearts beat together and bellowed the strong love they felt for one another.
"I love you so much!" Jordan said, moving so he could look Taylor in the eyes.
Taylor pulled him closer and put a kiss on the top of his head. "I love you too, baby. Always have and always will."
They reclined the bed some so Jordan's injured limbs could be supported better and his neck less strained. Taylor snuggled in closer and put an arm over his man's chest once he was as comfortable as possible. As they lie together, Jordan felt the desire to talk about something he'd been considering while they weren't together.
"I have an admission to make, Taylor," Jordan confessed.
Taylor immediately became nervous. "What is it, sweetheart?"
Jordan took a deep breath. "I don't want to work for you. I want to be with you always, but I hate financial work. I hated it before I met you and I learned exactly how miserable it makes me while we were apart."
Taylor wasn't shocked. He knew this man could do so much more, and it gave him the opportunity to ask a question from his mental list.
"What do you want, baby?" he asked.
"I don't really know. I know I want to be hands on and do something that makes a difference in someone's life. I'm sure I won't make much, and that makes me feel guilty," he said.
"Why would feel guilty?" Taylor asked.
"Well, I wouldn't be able to contribute as much toward our life together," he said contritely.
Taylor laughed heartily. "Baby, I've got more money than we could spend in a lifetime, and what's mine is yours. You go do what makes you happy and don't worry about anything stupid. We'll figure it out together."
Jordan smiled widely and nuzzled Taylor. He didn't think he could possibly love anyone more.
"I hear you get out of here soon," Taylor said, bringing up something else positive.
"Tomorrow, as a matter of fact, and it's not a minute too soon," Jordan replied. "I'm going stir crazy in here."
"Well, so you know, my mother's been arranging your return home. Lord only knows what she's planning, but I'm sure it'll be easier just to go along," he said giggling.
The mention of his mother brought fear and anxiety to Jordan's face. "Oh my god, Taylor. I so suck! My mother......she doesn't know what's happened to me. She must be worried sick!"
Taylor shook his head and continued laughing. "Never fear, baby. Lila's been on that case too. She had Leonard track down your mom's number before they left and has been keeping her up to date several times a day. They seemed to have grown rather close if you ask me."
Jordan rolled his eyes. "I'm sure she's heard all about me. My mother tends to ramble on about her children."
They laughed together in sympathy, both having overly talkative mothers.
Jordan covered up and cuddled into Taylor's chest. "I wanna go home, Taylor," he sighed.
"Soon, baby, soon" Taylor replied. In a state of bliss that was too long in coming, they closed their eyes and napped together.
The next morning, Jordan woke, excited to finally be leaving for home. Taylor helped him gather the cards he'd accumulated and change into loose clothing. It was challenging with the casts, but they managed to get him dressed and ready. The nurses came by to give their regards as he awaited his discharge paperwork. It finally arrived and two men moved in to get Jordan into his chair. Taylor's words were very true, as Lila had seen to every detail. The men rolled him to a handicapped van, using a lift to place him safely inside. Once they secured his wheels, the vehicle moved off and headed to the airport. Taylor remained by his side, holding his hand as they glanced at each other and smiled.
Once there, the men got Jordan down and lifted him out of the chair. They carefully took him up the plane's steps and set him down on one of the plush couches. An onboard nurse helped him with his seat belt as everyone else took their seats and buckled in for the ride home. Taylor sat next to Jordan, locking their fingers together tightly and refusing to let go. He only released the hand so Jordan could drink, but then recaptured it quickly. The group was a happy one, and they laughed and joked the whole way home. It was great to be together once more.
The flight went off without a hitch and landed as scheduled. As they taxied toward the hangar, Jordan could see another van and a face he'd recognize from any distance. It filled him with joy to know that his reunion with his mother was close at hand.
Once the door opened, two more large men entered the plane and brought Jordan down to his waiting chair. Glenda rushed over and hugged her son fiercely, showering him with kisses.
"Oh, baby! I'm so glad you're OK. We were so worried!" she cried, overcome with joy at seeing her son alive.
"I'm alright, mom," he assured her. "I'm just glad to be home. I'm sorry I didn't call you."
"Don't you worry about that, son. Mrs. Bryant was very kind and kept me informed every step of the way. She offered to fly us down there, but with work and Petey's school, we just couldn't get away," she informed him.
"It's OK, mom. You're here now, that's all that matters. By the way, where is Petey?" Jordan asked earnestly.
"I begged him to come, but he's obsessed with that girl and chose to be with her instead. He sends his love," she told him.
Jordan laughed at his brother. "Eighteen and already a slave to women!"
They giggled together and returned to embracing one another. The relief on Glenda's face was considerable as she clutched her son tightly.
The rest of the group had moved down the stairs and onto the tarmac. They hung back and observed the poignant reunion. Once the hugs and kisses were finished, Taylor moved forward and took his place at Jordan's side. Sensing his presence, Jordan smiled widely and took his hand, pulling him forward.
"Mom, meet Taylor, my husband," he said proudly.
Taylor turned crimson at the title and wanted to weep on the spot. He held his composure together, barely. One word had taken him from in command to a willing sycophant. The pride he felt at being called a "husband" in public was unequaled in his life! He stood dumbfounded as Jordan's mother extended her hand.
"I'm Glenda Maxwell. It's so nice to meet you," she said politely.
Taylor snapped out his stupor in a hurry and became the debonair man he wanted to be once again. "Taylor Bryant, ma'am and the pleasure's all mine," he replied, kissing her hand in deference.
"A charmer I see," she said to Jordan.
"You don't have a clue!" he replied, impressed with Taylor's suave ways.
Everyone else moved forward and greeted Mrs. Maxwell like a part of the family. When Lila moved forward, she was overtaken with gratitude.
"Thank you so much, Mrs. Bryant. You have no idea how much your calls meant to me!" she exclaimed as she wrapped the small woman in her arms.
"Come now, dear," Lila began, "we mothers must stick together, after all. Think nothing of what I've done. It was a pleasure to get to know you a bit better."
Glenda chuckled softly. "I feel like I've known you forever, ma'am, and we certainly have two amazing sons."
Lila huffed at the respect Glenda was showing her. "Child, I think we've become friends through this, and my friends call me Lil. Mrs. Bryant was my mother in law!"
The women laughed hard at their humor and hugged once more.
As they moved apart, the two attendants moved forward to get Jordan situated in the medical van. Glenda stepped aside as they wheeled him to the lift and began loading him up for the final leg of the journey home. Taylor stepped to her side and spoke into her ear. "Maybe you'd like to ride in the van with your son. You two haven't seen each other in a few weeks."
"Oh no," she replied quickly, "you belong beside him. I can ride with the others."
Taylor flipped the charm switch on and replied, "Madam, I have a lifetime to stay at his side. Go on and have some time alone with him."
Glenda thanked him and stepped inside the van. Jordan was a bit puzzled that Taylor didn't join them, but he understood what he was doing. Mother and son didn't say much on the ride home, preferring to sit close and just enjoy being together. The warmth that only mothers can provide enveloped him, making him even more glad he was finally going home.
The majestic flower assortment left Glenda open mouthed as the vehicle wound its way onto the Bryant Estate. Jordan was amused that this one thing had the same effect on everyone who saw them. The assortment of bright colors was indeed astounding. They came to rest under the portico and waited patiently until the orderlies unloaded Jordan. The rest of the family arrived while they were waiting.
Leonard and Carl, who had returned home early to make arrangements for Jordan's arrival, rushed out to greet him. They hugged and kissed him as Glenda had, relieved to have him back in one piece after such a close call. Jordan made the introductions and let their easy going manner impress Glenda as it had him. They directed everyone inside and began dispensing with the accumulated luggage.
Lila led everyone to the veranda. It was a cloudless day and she felt Jordan could benefit from the sun's healing energy. Leonard had set out a pitcher of tea and an assortment of sandwiches. As everyone ate and drank, they told stories and got to know Glenda better. She was a warm woman and even told a few tales that made Jordan blush. He respected his mother's parenting abilities greatly, hoping he'd be just as capable, should he ever get the chance.
Entirely too soon, however, Jordan's weakened condition caused his energy to wane, evidenced by several large yawns. Taylor noticed him fade and moved to wheel him away for some rest. He stood by as everyone said their goodbyes and then moved him back into the house. A severe dilemma soon presented itself, however. How did he get Jordan upstairs without hurting him worse? He stood at the base of the steep stairwell racking his brain for ideas when Leonard appeared at his side.
"Problem, son?" he queried.
"A big one," Taylor admitted. "I don't know how to get him to our bedroom. I don't think I'm strong enough to handle him alone." They spoke quietly as Jordan had fallen asleep while Taylor sought a solution to the problem.
"I guess that could be tough, huh? I have an idea, though. Why don't you follow me, son," Leonard said.
He led them down the hallway and passed the office to a room that was used for storage. Taylor gave him a weird look as he opened the door and waved him in. What he saw was amazing. The space had been transformed into a bedroom for the two of them and included tools that would help get Jordan around more easily. The best part was a connecting door into the office, so Taylor could check on him throughout the work day.
"Thanks, dad," he said sincerely as he pushed Jordan into their new room.
Rolling the chair next to the bed, Taylor began to unbutton the shirt his man was wearing. Jordan woke up at the contact and grinned once he realized it was Taylor in front of him. As the shirt came off, he stared into his bright eyes, feeling more content and happy than he had in a while. Once Taylor had him sufficiently disrobed, he grabbed a hold of his waist and hoisted Jordan upward. He stood still for a moment, making sure he remained steady, then carefully lowered him to the bed. They worked together to removed the shorts they'd fashioned for him, and then Taylor undressed, crawling in beside Jordan.
"What are you doing?" Jordan asked.
"What does it look like I'm doing? I'm taking a nap with you," he replied.
"You can't do that, honey. You have guests and I'm sure they're expecting you back," Jordan said.
"That's the great thing about adults, baby. They have power to adapt and overcome, so I'm sure they'll be fine. Besides, I told you I'm by your side always and I meant it!" Taylor averred.
Jordan smiled at the sentiment and scooted closer to his man. Taylor got his arms situated around Jordan comfortably and pulled them together. For a time, they were silent and suddenly unable to sleep. Jordan had a hard time getting settled with the annoying casts on his left side, no matter how many readjustments they tried. He knew that sleep wasn't coming without his pills, but he didn't want to take one just yet. The fog they created was getting old, so he decided to lie still and try to take it easy. Taylor was just as antsy, a condition left over from the busy day. After a few minutes of not talking, Jordan couldn't stand it anymore and broke the silence.
"I've been thinking a lot about what I want to do with my life," he announced.
"Really? What do you think you want to do, baby?" Taylor responded.
"I still don't know, exactly. I've got this strong desire to help people, and I know the perfect role for me is out there somewhere," he replied.
"I think I know someone who might be able to help you with that," Taylor said.
"Really? Who?" Jordan quizzed excitedly.
"Your mother in law, silly!" Taylor responded, watching the light bulb go off above Jordan's head.
"DUH! Why didn't I think of that?" he said, laughing.
They tossed some ideas back and forth as yawns burst forth from both of them. The conversation turned into one word answers and tired moans of approval. As they neared the slumber precipice, their trance was broken by Taylor's squawking cell phone. Looking at the number display, he saw it was Thad calling.
"Hey, bud," he answered. "What's up?"
"I'm sorry to disturb you, but we need to meet in the morning. I just got a call from Ben Dyer. He filed the lawsuit paperwork and had everyone served. It's drawn a quick response and it looks like the shit's gonna hit the fan," he informed Taylor.
"Set it up and we'll be there," Taylor said and closed the phone. His look became worried as he considered what Thad told him.
"What's wrong?" Jordan asked.
Taylor turned and faced him directly. "We've gotta meet with Thad in the morning. Dyer filed the suits and things have heated up. So, here we go...."
