Jonathan 29
Jonathan and Malcolm were all set to fly out to New Zealand on Tuesday 15th September 2009. Malcolm had said they needed to have a stop- over, otherwise they would arrive exhausted and thoroughly jet-lagged. There was a lengthy debate as to where they would break their journey. When Malcolm and Janice had flown out they had done a round the world trip, stopping at Singapore on the way out for three nights, and Los Angeles for three nights on their way back. Though Malcolm was prepared to stop over at either place, Jonathan insisted that it was somewhere different. Candidates for if they went eastward were Dubai and Sydney -- though Sydney was almost New Zealand. Eventually they decided on going westward, and stopping over in Hawaii. Both of them wanted to go to Honolulu and especially to visit Pearl Harbour. They would have three nights there before flying on to Auckland in New Zealand.
Lois insisted that there should be a family gathering before they went off. She was fearful that Jonathan would like New Zealand as much as Kevin had done, and would remain out there. There was then a debate as to the timing for the meal; they decided to eat early so as to have some time all together at the house in Luton. Stephen, Paula and their two children were also invited. They booked a table for ten people at a local restaurant.
The whole evening went very well. Lois was containing her emotion at Jonathan going off to the antipodes; and Michael was in a much more relaxed mood. Jonathan was wondering if the more relaxed approach of the Anglican church they were now attending was already having an effect. Lois had said to Jonathan, "We don't get a tirade every Sunday at our new church. The teaching might not be so thorough, but we' are not taught to regard those not with us as totally against us; that all the rest of humanity consists of hell-bound sinners."
When they got back to the house, there was still some light in the sky. Jonathan's brother, Thomas, and cousin Mark, dragged Jonathan out into the garden to play French cricket. There was a security floodlight at the back of the house, and the movements of the players kept it alight. After a few minutes Stephen came out to join the boys. Then Michael, and the two girls Abigail and Zoe. Malcolm joined it, saying that he was far to old for such childish games, and it would upset his rheumatics.
"That's the first time I've heard you've got rheumatism, Gramps,' said Jonathan.
"I always suffer in silence," added Malcolm.
He made one diving catch, to show that his old cricketing skills were not totally a thing of the past. Finally Lois and Paula came out and joined it. French Cricket is not a game to be taken seriously. There was a great deal of laughter.
After three quarters of an hour the game was concluded. Stephen, Paula, Zoe and Mark were the first to leave, as they had the furthest to go. Also there was school in the morning.
"Give our love to Kevin," said Stephen. "I hope someday he'll bring Owen over here for us to meet."
"Why don't you come out to New Zealand, and visit him?"
"Maybe, when the children are off our hands," said Paula.
"That looks like being another couple of decades," muttered Stephen.
"You sound just like your father," said Paula with a laugh. "But seriously, Jonathan, I hope it all goes well for you. You deserve a good break"
"I've had a good break. Gramps has been wonderful. So supportive, so non-judgmental."
"What would you like to happen?" asked Paula.
Jonathan looked around to see if his parents were anywhere near. "I would like to meet some guy I can really love, and be committed to long term."
"I hope you meet someone, Jon."
Jonathan smiled. "We'll see."
They were waved off in their car. Jonathan strolled round to the back of the house. He stood there looking at it, and at the garden, wondering when he would next see it. It was possible that his stay in New Zealand would be short, and he would be back after six months. But deep in himself he felt he was making a real break, and that his long term future lay the other side of the world.
As he stood there in the shadows, his father came up and put an arm round his shoulder. "I hope all goes well for you in New Zealand, Jon."
"Thanks, Dad." He was somewhat surprised at the arm round his shoulder, his father had shown him no physical affection since the bust up a year before.
"Ted Markham [The manager at Stevenage, and Jonathan's immediate boss at work] is very impressed with your work. He says you have worked really hard at every job you've been given. Even the not so pleasant and interesting ones."
"Thanks, Dad!"
"He also says as far as he knows you've never played rank, as the boss's son. The comment of those you've been working with has always been, `Oh, he's just like the rest of us'. Well done."
"Thanks, Dad. Thanks for saying that."
"Jon, I want to say something more. I want to say how much I admire you."
"Admire me?" said Jonathan with a real note of surprise in his voice.
"Yes, I admire you. Even for when you stood up to me a year ago. I was very angry with you, and you knew it, but you stuck to your guns. I thought you were very, very wrong, defiant in your sin. But it took guts to persist. Then I admire the way you have coped and recovered from what happened to you at that place. Are you still getting those nightmares?"
"A few. Not so many now, and further apart, and usually not so vivid. Gramps has been wonderful. He listens and calms me."
"Do you wake him up?"
"Sometimes he is woken." Jonathan realised he would have to be careful what he said, as Michael would be horrified at the thought of Jonathan sleeping with his grandfather, let alone them both in the nude. "He's been great. I owe him a lot."
"I think over the last few months he has been the father to you that I should have been."
"You have your beliefs, Dad."
"I went to talk with the vicar of the church where we are going now. We just discussed this whole gay business. He's not like Father Willis, so sure that his own beliefs are a hundred percent right, and any other is totally wrong. I wouldn't exactly say he was pro gay. But he is thinking seriously over the issues involved. He has a friend from University days who a couple of months ago told him he was gay. He says this friend is just the same. He says he cannot be judgmental on him. He is still a friend, and that his being gay does not really affect their friendship."
"I think for a lot of people, just knowing a person who is gay makes a lot of difference in their attitude. They see they haven't got horns in their heads and a forked tail."
Michael laughed. "You are still the same, Jon. I am sorry for all the difficulties and stresses that there have been between us. You are still my first born son. I still love you."
"I don't think - even in our worst moments I've doubted that you loved me. You were doing what was right in your eyes, and you were wanting what you thought was the best for me. But I never doubted your love for me. I thank you and Mum for that. I just thought your views were wrong."
"Perhaps they were. The vicar was saying how important it is to love, especially members of our family who we disagree with. So may we bury the hatchet, Jon?"
"Was there ever a real hatchet?"
"I think we both felt there was at times."
"Thanks, Dad I appreciate what you've said. Thanks for bringing me up the way you did. That gave me the guts and so on."
Michael laughed.
They turned towards each other. Michael held out his arms, and Jonathan put his arms round his father. Both had tears in their eyes. They hugged for several minutes.
From one of the windows in the house, Lois saw the two men embrace. She smiled, sighed with relief, and wept too.
After their long hug Jonathan and his father turned towards the house. Michael's arm remained on Jonathan's shoulder and Jonathan's arm was round his father's waist.
"When you see Kev, tell him I hope that when he next comes to the UK, as I hope he will, he will bring Owen, and visit us, and if he wishes, stay with us."
That was a further surprise for Jonathan. "Is that the olive branch, Dad?"
"Yes, son. Kev is my brother. I don't think the Lord wants family to fall out. The Lord knows all about problems within the family, because He had them. But his brother did become the first leader of the Church in Jerusalem, so there must have been reconciliation there."
"I'll tell him."
When Jonathan and his father got back into the house Malcolm and Lois were talking in the kitchen.
"We must be going, Jon. Early start tomorrow. I've got to do my packing."
"Gramps, you've been packing for a week. I know that. Stop all that long suffering guff!"
"See, this grandson knows me better than myself."
Lois, Michael, Abigail and Thomas burst out laughing. Malcolm gave them all a wink.
Lois and Michael were going to take Malcolm and Jonathan to the airport the following day.
The emotional farewell was with Abigail and Thomas. There were long hugs, and wet eyes. New Zealand seemed a very long away.
It had to be an early start in the morning as Malcolm and Jonathan's flight to Honolulu left Heathrow at 11.35. This meant they had to be at the airport three hours before, and traffic on the M25 [London orbital motorway] at the morning rush hour never made the journey fast.
It was just after 6.00am when Michael drove the car up to Malcolm's house. The burglar alarm was set, the front door locked, the luggage loaded into the boot of the car.
Jonathan sat in the front alongside his father, while Lois and Malcolm sat in the back.
They did not talk a great deal.
There were more hugs and tears at the airport. Then Malcolm and Jonathan disappeared into passport control, and all the other checks. There was a final wave, and Lois and Michael made their way back to their car.
Jonathan had flown several times before, but never on a long haul flight. This one took nineteen and three quarter hours. It involved going over the top of the world. Jonathan thought about what lay below him, the sea, snow and ice, as well as the mountains. The final part across the Pacific to Honolulu seemed to last an eternity.
"Alaska to Hawaii looks such a short distance on most of our maps," said Jonathan.
"The Pacific is slightly wider than the English Channel!" was his grandfather's reply.
It was gone 21.00 when they landed. The soft humid air of Honolulu embraced them. There was a car to take them to their hotel. Jonathan was all eyes, looking out at this place far away from his home. Their hotel was in Waikiki. They were both very tired, and went almost straight to bed. They slept in separate beds for the first time since Jonathan's bad nightmare shortly after leaving Bill's Place. They had agreed that their sleeping arrangements were to be a secret, even from Kevin, who was the member of the family most likely to understand.
The following morning they went to visit Pearl Harbour. They looked round the exhibition, saw a film, and were taken by launch across to the platform erected above the sunken Arizona. They could see the ship lying in the water below. They looked at the very long list of sailors for whom the Arizona marked their final resting place. They were both very moved by the whole experience.
"The Yanks do these things well," said Malcolm.
"Your grandmother and I have visited the vast cemetery above Omaha Beach in Normandy. Again beautifully, tastefully done. Our war cemeteries are different. Smaller; but many more of them. I remember one in Normandy from the First World War, just six war graves, in the corner of a small French cemetery, alongside the local farmers and their families. Again beautifully kept. I can't help thinking in such places as this, that each one of those guys, whose names are up there, was the son of a mother and father, possibly had brothers and sisters, friends. Some fathered children who were born after they were killed."
"It says there were some fathers with their sons."
"I know. How terrible to lose two generations of men-folk in one incident in a bloody war. War's a terrible thing, Jon. They say we are getting more civilised, but our wars are getting bloodier, is that progress?"
They stood side by side, leaning over the side, looking at the grey Arizona in the water beneath them. It was a sombre moment for them both as they remembered that bright December morning in 1941, the day of infamy.
As they turned to get back on to the launch to take them back, Jonathan leaned and whispered in Malcolm's ear. "Do you think any of them were like us, Gramps?"
Malcolm paused for a moment, as he took in Jonathan's question. "Yes, must have been. With that number of men killed some of them must have been like us. I think that's the sort of fact the military of both our nations have not really wanted to face up to, --- at least until very recently."
They spent the afternoon on the beach. It did not take much for Jonathan to persuade his grandfather to go for a swim, though it was accompanied by the usual moans about the temperature of the water. The claim that the water was too warm made a pleasant change from Malcolm's moans about the temperature of the North Sea. Malcolm did not often swim these days, but Jonathan was a strong swimmer.
That evening they went out to eat in a restaurant near their hotel. Their waiter was a lightly bronzed young man.
"There's a sexy young man for you, Jon," said Malcolm.
Jonathan looked at him more attentively. "Yes, you're right. But probably straight."
"Maybe. But you can never tell."
"Is your gaydar as good as Simon's is supposed to be?"
"No. What about yours?"
"Very slow."
They continued to eat their meal.
"I think the waiter is interested in you, Jon."
"In me? What makes you say that?"
"The way he looks at you. When he talks to you he keeps looking at you. Usually they look at the older man, who is going to pay the bill and give the tip."
"He is good looking, I agree."
"I think you may be right," said Jonathan after a few minutes, and another visit to the table by the waiter.
"We'll see. When he doesn't look very busy, I shall get up to go to the loo, and we'll see what happens. If you like him, and you want to, arrange to meet up with him. It'd do you good, to have a break from the company of an old fogey like me."
"You said it," said Jonathan with a laugh.
A few minutes later Malcolm observed that the waiter was just standing watching the tables which were in his area. He stood up. "Best of luck, Jon." He made his way over to the toilets, - to use the English word. As he went round the corner he saw that the waiter was already speaking to Jonathan. He smiled to himself, and decided to prolong his time away from the table.
"I hope you've enjoyed your meal," said the waiter as he came up to Jonathan.
"Yes. Very much, thank you."
"Where are you from, if I may ask?"
"I'm from Britain."
"Long way away. Are you here on holiday, or passing through?"
"Passing through. My grandfather and I are on our way to New Zealand. We just here for three nights. This is our second night."
"Are you going all the way to New Zealand on holiday, or to visit family?"
"To visit my uncle, and his partner."
"Is your uncle living in New Zealand then?"
"Yes, work sent him out there a few years ago, and that is when he met Owen. But he went back to there to be with Owen. He's a New Zealander."
There was just a flicker of a smile on the waiter's face. "Have you seen much of Honolulu?"
"We did Pearl Harbour this morning, and spent this afternoon on the beach, swimming amongst other things."
"You haven't seen much of the real life of Honolulu then. Would you like me to show you something of the night life?"
"I'm sure that would be interesting. Yes, I would."
"But what about your grandfather?"
"I think he will be wanting to get back to our room, and to get his head into a book before going to sleep."
The waiter looked at his watch. "I come off duty in an hour. Tell me your hotel and I will meet you at the main door at nine thirty. My name's Mart, by the way."
"Mine's Jon."
Malcolm appeared.
"Hi Gramps. Mart, here, has offered to show me something of the night life of this place. And I've accepted."
Somehow Malcolm managed to keep a straight face. "Good. You don't want to be burdened by an old geriatric like me all the time."
"You can get your head into your Mills and Boon, or is it Enid Blyton tonight?" [Mills and Boon:- publishers of light romantic fiction which no man would be seen dead reading. Enid Blyton:- popular children's author though rather dated now.]
"No; it's Harry Potter tonight."
Mart looked puzzled at this badinage, but realised from the sparkle in Jonathan's and Malcolm's eyes that there was some leg pulling going on.
At nine thirty Jonathan came and stood in the porch of his hotel. A few minutes later a car pulled up, the door opened and Mart called out "Get in, Jon"
Mart drove the car.
"Where are we going?"
"First of all to a place out of town, which I think you'll enjoy. If it's not your scene we can always move on."
"What sort of place is it then?"
"Wait until we get there. But tell me about England? Do you live in London?"
The conversation now settled to talk about their two countries. They drove out of town, and along the road round the island. Jonathan got occasional glimpses of the sea. It was a warm night, and the soft air blew in through the open car windows. After a few miles they turned off the road, towards the interior of the island. The road became more and more a track.
"Where are you taking me?"
"It's a sort of club. I'm afraid there is a membership fee of twenty dollars for visitors. I'm a member so my entrance is paid. Is that all right? I'm sure you will find it interesting, and enjoyable."
Jonathan was tempted to give a Malcolm type reply about just about being able to afford it, but just managed to hold his tongue.
Mart drove the car round a bend in the track. There was a large, and fairly full car park in front of a brightly lit single story building. There was the sound of loud music emanating from the building. They got out of the car and Mart led the way.
At the entrance Mart produced his membership card. "This is my friend Jon, from England. I'm introducing him."
The formalities were soon completed and a twenty dollar bill produced.
Mart led the way through a door. The noise was now even louder.
Jonathan immediately noticed it was filled with men. Some were at the bar drinking, others at tables drinking and talking, and others on a dance floor dancing.
Jonathan spoke into Mart's ear. "A gay club?"
"Yes. Is that all right? Or do you want to leave?"
"No its fine by me." Jonathan laughed. "How did you guess?"
"Gaydar! Though I did wonder if your grandfather was actually your sugar Daddy."
Jonathan laughed.
"I keep off the alcohol as I am driving. I don't want to get caught, or to crash the car into a wall."
"I keep off the booze too. Had enough wine with the meal. But let me get you a drink."
They settled what they would drink, and Jonathan went over to the bar. They stood watching the dancing, and the men in the place as they consumed their drinks. The music was Hawaiian, and it lent itself to sensuous dancing.
"Jon, are you into dancing?"
"Yea. Not much good, but I don't think skill really matters here."
"How right you are. Come on then."
They went out onto the dance floor.
Jonathan remembered Jason's account of his first dance with Angie, when she seduced him. There were no preliminaries with Mart. His first movements were sensuous and seductive. Jonathan knew exactly what were the intentions of his friend. He responded as flagrantly as he knew how. They were oblivious to everyone else in the place, their eyes were totally on each other. Jonathan realised just how attractive Mart was. Racially he seemed to be a mixture of native Hawaiian and European. He had a good body, and a beautifully rounded arse. He liked what he saw; and it was obvious that Mart liked what he saw too. They danced for about a quarter of an hour.
"I'm in need of another drink," said Mart.
"But I'll get them this time."
They went off the dance floor and to the side where they could stand watching all that was going on. In a few minutes Mart was back with a couple of glasses.
"There is another room with some more interesting dancing and so on. Want to see, Jon?"
"Yes. I'm enjoying this place."
Mart led the way through to another room, this was much smaller, much darker, and the music slightly softer. The room smelt of drink and man-sweat. There were several men standing round the room, drinking and watching the dancers on the floor. Most of the men in the room had removed their shirts, and stood around in jeans or in some cases in shorts. There were some eight men on the dance floor. four pairs. The dancing was even more flagrantly sexual, one couple were naked and were closely embracing and just swaying to the music. The other naked couple were dancing apart, but one of them with a very obvious hard on. He was trying to get a similar response from his partner without actually touching him. This couple was the main focus of attention for the spectators. The other man's cock started to rise, to the accompaniment of cheers and jeers from the onlookers.
Mart looked at Jon, who looked back and grinned.
"Some guys think naked dancing is going one step too far, so there are these two rooms. This for those who like such things, and the other for the more prudish!"
Jonathan laughed. "What is going on in there are certainly not the actions of prudes."
"Let's go back into the other room and have another dance. If we start joining in in here, then all sorts of things may start happening. What is happening now is quite mild compared to some times."
They went back into the larger room, and danced for another twenty minutes.
"I'm hot," said Mart, "I need to cool off."
"Let's have another drink."
"We can take it outside."
They took their drinks out into the car park, and walked over to Mart's car, and leant against it, looking down the valley to the sea two or three miles away and just over a thousand feet below.
"What do you want to do, Jon? More dancing, or would you like to go for a dip. That ocean looks inviting."
"I enjoyed being in there. But I am hot still. Let's go for a swim."
They got into the car, and Mart drove them down to the main road, turned away from the main centre of civilisation, and drove for a couple of miles further before turning off down to the sea. He drove the car to the edge of some trees. Before them Jonathan saw there was a low cliff and the sea beyond. The beach stretched for about two hundred yards between some cliffs. The sea was fairly calm, and the moon had just risen creating a sparkling path across the waters.
They got out of the car and walked to the edge of the low cliff, and looked at the sea.
Mart came and put an arm on Jonathan's near shoulder. "Beautiful, isn't it. Just right for a good swim."
"I presume a nuddy swim?"
"Exactly. During the day this beach swarms with families and howling kids. But as you see at this time of night..........."
"Leaves the world to darkness and to me," muttered Jonathan.
"What was that?"
"Oh some poem, we had to learn when I was at school."
"So lets see who can get into the water first, okay?"
They were quickly naked, as neither was over dressed in the first place. They clambered down the few feet onto the beach and ran towards the breaking surf. Mart probably won by about a yard, but that did enable Jon to get a quick sight of the other man's most attractive butt.
Mart led the way, swimming out for about fifty yards. He stopped and began to tread water. "How's that? Have you ever swum in the nude before?"
"A few times. Great isn't it!" Jonathan remembered his times swimming in the small pool at Bill's farm, with Andy, and with Bill standing stark naked looking down on them from the side.
Mart turned onto his back and started floating.
Jonathan got a good view of the equipment. The cooler water had made things smaller, but they looked good to him. Jonathan turned onto his back and started floating.
Mart took a good look, and then dived and swum underneath Jonathan, his back lightly touching Jonathan's buttocks as he went under.
They then took turns diving under the other or near the other, getting closer, and touching more and more. Both knew what they wanted. There was much laughter.
"Shall we go back?" asked Mart.
"Good idea."
They swam back to the beach, and waded ashore. Mart put his arm round Jonathan's far shoulder, who put his arm round Mart's waist.
"Enjoy that?"
"Yes. Feel ready for anything now."
"Good. That's what I hoped." He pulled Jonathan even closer.
When they reached the car Mart opened the boot, and got out something to lie on. He put it out on the ground. They stood looking at the sea, and the moon path on the waters. The moon was rising fast.
"Quite a romantic spot," said Jonathan.
"I suppose so; with the moon on the water, and the trees and the shore. But I am very used to it."
"It must be great to live where the sea water is warm. The North Sea is never warm, it becomes bearable in a hot summer."
"Do you live far from the sea?"
"Quite a way. It is not somewhere where we go for an hour or so. It is a day trip from where I live."
They stood in silence, and then as if with one mind they turned towards each other and kissed.
Mart made the next move, putting his hand down to hold Jonathan's cock, which immediately responded. Jonathan's hand was soon holding Mart. They continued to kiss. They turned closer to each other, so cock was pressing against cock.
"I've never made love to an Englishman before."
"And I've never made love to an American."
"My Mum's a white American, my Dad's a Polynesian."
"All adds to the interest. We obviously like the same things."
Mart took Jonathan's hand and they both got down onto the groundsheet. Mart took the initiative. He made Jonathan lie on his back, and then started to kiss him. Then slowly he began to kiss, nibble, and lick his way, down over Jonathan's chest and stomach. He felt the hard cock under his chin, but he kissed his way around it. He licked Jonathan's balls, and nuzzled his mouth and face into his groin, and then into his perinaeum.
Jonathan made appreciative noises.
Then Mart began to lick and finally to suck Jonathan's cock.
"That's enough," said Jonathan "I don't want to cum too quickly." He sat up and pushed Mart onto his back. Jonathan got his face between Mart's knees, and began to kiss his thighs, first one then the other, slowly moving higher. He too paid prolonged attention to Mart's groin and balls, before sucking his cock.
It was Mart who stopped Jonathan for the same reason.
For a while they lay side by side, talking to each other, and letting their hands wander, touch, feel and play.
They talked about some of their past experiences. Jonathan told Mart about Bob, and how that ended, about Steve and Jason. He didn't feel he needed to tell him about his experiences at Bill's Place.
The moon was rising rapidly, and the silvery light was increasing. The two of them moved closer together. They resumed kissing. Cocks became fully erect.
"I find a good old 69 too rich an experience," said Mart. "It's concentrating on two good things at once, what you're doing, and what' s being done to you. I want to suck you off, but with full free access to every part of your cock and balls."
"That sounds good to me. Do just that, then I'll do the same to you."
Jonathan rolled over on to his back, and opened his legs wide. Martin got down between them, so his face had the full free access. He took it slowly and gently, using the tip of his tongue and his lips. Then he began to suck Jonathan's cock.
Jonathan uttered appreciative groans. He felt he was mounting towards his climax. A full load flooded out into Mart's mouth.
When Mart had sucked Jonathan dry he moved up, half lying on Jonathan and they kissed.
"Thanks, Mart, that was great. Give me a couple of minutes and I'll do my best with you."
It was then Mart's turn to position himself as Jonathan had done.
Jonathan used all the art and skill he'd acquired working at Bill's Place. He spent several minutes using his tongue and lips on Mart's balls and groin.
"Hey, Jon, you're an expert. Where did you learn to do it like that?"
Jonathan did not answer; he just continued. He knew how to lower the heat when Mart was getting close to shooting.
Mart found the build up towards his climax, followed by the lowering of the pressure at first exciting, then frustrating. "Let me shoot, Jon, let me shoot!" He rolled around, but Jonathan held him in his arms, and kept his mouth on Mart's cock. "I want to shoot. Let me cum."
Then Jonathan allowed him to shoot his load.
They collapsed and lay close beside each other each recovering.
"Jon, I've never experienced anything like that before. I don't think I've ever shot so much. Where did you learn to keep a guy on the brink of cuming like that."
"London has all sorts of educational establishments."
Mart laughed. "I must go there and take the course. An advanced degree in cock sucking!"
By mutual agreement they arranged to depart. There were a few more kisses, and several more hugs.
Once again the stood and looked at the moon, now high above the bay.
Mart drove Jonathan back to his hotel. They had a quick kiss in the car, and thanked each other for a good night out.
Unfortunately they were unable to arrange anything for the following evening as Mart was working a late shift.
Jonathan went up to the room he was sharing with Malcolm. He quietly opened the door and slipped inside. He stood for a while with his back against the door as his eyes adjusted to the dim light.
Malcolm was not disturbed and continued to breathe heavily. Jonathan undressed and slipped into his bed, and was soon asleep.
As usual Malcolm was the first to wake in the morning. He saw that Jonathan was in his bed and fast asleep. It was now his turn to move quietly. He went into the bathroom, and closed the door before turning on the light. As quietly as he could he went through his usual bathroom ritual. His getting dressed back in the room disturbed Jonathan, who with many groans and rubbing of his eyes slowly came to.
"What time is it, Gramps?"
"Half past seven."
"Is there such a time? It's far too early."
"What time did you get back last night?"
"About a quarter to three!"
"I presume I'd better not ask for details, as they would be sordid, and would lead me astray."
"My dear Gramps, you are right there are sordid details, but you are entirely wrong about them leading you astray. You've wandered too far from the fold of correctitude to be led any further astray yourself."
Malcolm laughed. "You had a great time?"
"We went to a gay club; and then down to a little bay where we swam and had some fun."
"Till gone two in the morning. What would your parents say? But tell me what was the gay club like."
Jonathan roused himself, and sat on his bed stark naked in front of his grandfather, and told him all about the club."
"Interesting, but more a youngster's scene. I think Bill's Place sounds more interesting for an old man like myself."
"Are you seriously thinking about joining."
"A bit. I was reckoning how much my expenditure has gone down since poor old Janice died. I now only have to pay for one car. It is food for one, I know two when you were with me, but you contributed to that. When I get back my Council Tax will be reduced because it will be just me in the house on my own. I reckon I could afford the occasional session with the delectable young men who serve men like me."
"What does Simon say?"
"He's all for it. Says he wouldn't think it right for him to join. Patricia might find out. He says something he can cope with things as they are with me, without the added complications of membership of a gay brothel."
"You're serious aren't you?"
"Yes, I think I am."
"You'll need a recommendation from a member. I wonder if Bill would accept me to give you the reference?"
They both laughed.
"I must get cleaned up." Jonathan stood up, stretched, completely uninhibitedly in front of Malcolm, and went into the bath room.
Malcolm thought how much he was going to miss Jonathan if he stayed in New Zealand. Though they had never done anything sexually together they were open with each other, wandering around upstairs in the nude, and talking frankly about their activities in the past and present.
They spent that day on a conducted tour of the island.
They caught a night flight to Auckland.
