Chapter 42 Wake-Up Call
I approached the house after sunset, excited that I was finally home. Lance and I were going to be together once more. The demon Macai was defeated and everyone returned to his or her life. The world was quiet once more.
I turned the doorknob and walked inside. Everything was in place. Everything was normal. I took a deep sniff and inhaled the scents familiar to me. I could even smell Lance. His scent was intoxicating. Dropping my bags on the floor, I went to the kitchen, which was empty. The door to the patio was locked. No need going out there. I turned around and headed upstairs.
A light shined underneath the master bedroom door. Lance was relaxing for the evening. Oh, how I longed for this moment, to crawl underneath the covers and feel his hairy legs next to mine; to feel the heat from his body warming me; to cuddle up close and snuggle with my soul mate. The world was perfect and life was good.
I lightly grasped the doorknob and turned. I didn't want to rush in and scare him to death. That would be rude. Being subtle and yet normal was the way to go. I pushed and the door opened.
"Lance, I'm home," I said cheerily. The sight before my eyes drained the cheer and joy right out of my face. "Oh my God," I whispered.
Lance lay in the bed but he wasn't alone. Justin was straddling him, riding him. JC was straddling his face, penetrating his mouth. Joey was penetrating his bottom and Chris was performing oral sex on Justin. I walked in on NSYNC having group sex, an orgy with each other.
"Oh my God," I whispered again.
All five men looked over at me and smiled, or as well as anyone can smile when he or she has a mouth full. Lance mumbled something to me then Joey turned and said, "Lance asked you to join us. Why don't you, eh?"
I turned and ran. Down the stairs, out the front door, down the street I ran. Why was this happening? Lance wouldn't act like that, would he? Did he change while I was gone? Has he become someone different while I was away? Can I even rebuild what we lost if he is different? Oh God, too many questions! It was so overwhelming!
I wasn't paying attention to where I was going. I ran right out into the street, not noticing the oncoming tractor trailer until the last possible second. The truck sounded its horn and I turned, lights glaring in my eyes and then...
I jumped in the bed waking myself from the horrible dream. My body was sticky with a cold sweat. Wide awake, I got up and went to the window. The sky was still dark, the night was still present. When would dawn come? I wondered. When would this night end?
I needed to freshen myself a bit, clean off the sweat, so I went into the bathroom and splashed some cold water on my face. After relaxing for a few minutes, I decided to tackle sleep again. Curling up in the vast bed, I closed my eyes and sleep overtook me.
Everything was over. My mission to England was a success. Macai was defeated. No one was injured severely, thank goodness. We had our celebratory dinner and everyone returned to their homes, including me.
The taxi made the turn into the housing allotment in which Lance's house resided. Tonight all was quiet and at peace. Finally. Peace. It was overwhelming. Lance's house had a few lights on, but not many. I approached the door with joy unspeakable in my heart. Trying the knob, I found the door locked so I did the next best thing. I rang the doorbell.
"Hold on a second," a muffled voice said. I excitedly waited for Lance to open the door. I would give him a big hug and kiss. I had missed him so much.
Hearing the lock turn, I readied myself. The door opened and...
"Oh my God," I whispered.
Another man was standing in the doorway looking at me with a smile on his face. It slowly faded away as my countenance fell. "Can I help you?" he asked. "Are you okay?"
"Who is it?" I heard Lance say from the kitchen. He came around into the living room and saw it was me. A smile formed on his face and he came up to the man standing in the doorway. "Eric! It's about time you got here!"
"Who..." was all I managed to say as I looked at the man standing with Lance.
Lance put his arm around the guy's neck and pecked him on the cheek. "This is David. I couldn't wait for you. I had no idea when you were coming home so I got me a playmate! We can share! He's got a kick-ass body and is very well endowed." Lance turned to David. "How long are you again?"
"About twelve inches."
"Oh my God," I whispered.
"Impressive, isn't?" Lance noted my face was not the happiest. "Eric? What's wrong? Come on. Take a ride with him and you will feel all better."
"I can't... I can't do this," I mumbled, choking back the tears. I turned and ran away. I couldn't handle seeing Lance with anyone besides me. It was too much. It hurt too badly. It felt as if I couldn't breathe. I lost him to someone else.
I ran and ran and suddenly was in downtown Orlando where I slowed my pace. My mind was turned off. I was not paying attention to anything or anyone. I wasn't even thinking. I was completely and totally numb from what I had seen. Nothing could change what I was feeling, or wasn't feeling.
I didn't even notice the man walking up to me and ask for my money. I just stopped and looked at him. He asked again, but I wasn't moving. I didn't care. Nothing mattered. Life didn't matter.
When I didn't comply, the man pulled out a gun. I could have easily disarmed him, but I didn't want to. I wanted him to shoot. I wanted to die. If I didn't have Lance, why would I want to live? He was my everything.
I watched as the hammer moved back slowly on the pistol. Time stood still. Everything moved in slow motion. The hammer fell forward. A loud, deafening blast. The bullet escaped the barrel and came right at my chest. I felt the bullet enter my heart and...
I jumped up in bed. This was getting ridiculous. A second dream of Lance moving on with his life, moving on without me, and he was happy. Furthermore, he was not the guy I used to be. He changed. He was a slut! He was interested in sex only. What kind of change was that? It certainly wasn't for the better, that's for sure.
I calmed myself by taking slow, deep breaths. It was only a dream, nothing more. Just some fears I needed to deal with and then all would be fine. As soon as Macai was dealt with, I would be able to return home and be with Lance. And we would live happily ever after.
Slowly sleep overtook me and...
I walked up the walkway to Lance's house. The street was dark and quiet, not a light shown in a window. "Where could Lance be?" I asked out loud.
I tried the doorknob and it turned easily. Pushing on it, the door swung open to a dusty room. "Lance?" I called out. "Are you here?"
I entered the house cautiously. Sitting my bags down, I went to the kitchen only to find it empty. The door to the patio was locked so I knew he wasn't outside. "Perhaps he's upstairs," I wondered aloud.
I turned and walked up the stairs. The bedroom door was open and I could see the moonlight streaking in through the window. A silhouette landed on the floor of a person. I walked in and saw someone sitting at the window looking out at the night sky. The light coming in created a shadow over the side of his face. I had a feeling as to the identity of the person.
"Lance," I said. No response came so I called it again. Nothing. I walked up to him and placed my hand on his bare shoulder. His skin was cold, as cold as death. "What the..."
"He waited for you," a voice said from behind. I turned to see Chris standing in the doorway.
"Chris?"
"Lance waited for you. He sat there night after night and looked out at the night sky wishing on the stars that you would come home. And you never did."
"But I did come home. Twice. And both times he was happy. He was rather horny, but he was still happy. Why is he dead?"
"He died inside when you didn't come home. He loved you and wanted to spend forever with you. But you didn't come home."
"I said it before; I did come home, when I was able to."
"Too little too late. He's gone now. You can't get him back. You've lost him forever."
I fell to my knees and tears welled up in my eyes. "Oh my God," I whispered.
"There is no use crying about it now," Chris said matter-of-factly. "You had it all. You had the love of your life. You were going to school to better yourself. You were on your way to making life better for hundreds, if not thousands, of people. You had a home, family and friends, and now you have nothing." His voice became angered. "You've squandered everything and for what? For a few months of time in another country? For an immortal demon?"
"If I hadn't gone, the demon would have killed hundreds of thousands of people. I did it to save the world," I yelled back at him. "I wanted to make sure the love of my life would be alive! Had I not fought the demon, he could have killed all those whom I love!"
"And what does it matter now to your loved ones. They'd rather have died with you than lived without you. You are selfish."
"No," I whispered. "No." The anger welled up in me as I defied what Chris was telling me. Then it happened. I exploded with anger and rage and projected it all upon Chris. Fire shot forth from me and engulfed Chris. He cried out in pain and hunched against the wall.
"It won't do you any good trying to kill me. I can't be killed. I'm immortal."
"No, but I can sure make hurt a hell of a lot."
Another burst of flame shot forth engulfing Chris, a stream of flame continuously flowing from my body to Chris. My anger fed the flame, fueled the fire.
"God," I muttered. "Help me. You promised you would be with me. Where are you?"
All went quiet as if I had gone deaf. The flames we soundless, I could not hear the tick of the clock. My heart, once beating rapidly, slowed to a normal pace. Something was happening, something inside me. My heart kept slowing until it stopped beating.
The flames stopped as well and Chris looked up at me. "You're dead," he said with a grin.
I sat upright in my bed looking around. My heart rate was intensely fast from the nightmare. The blankets were soaked with sweat and a cold sweat covered my body. I began to chill as if I had caught the flu. "Not good," I said to no one in particular. "I can't be getting sick now."
I got up and went to the bathroom where I wiped myself off. After changing into some dry clothes, I walked over to the window and looked out at the night sky.
"Lord," my voice lifted up in prayer, "why did I dream such dreams? I had a wonderful experience with you just before sleep. Now I'm having nightmares of Lance being with someone else. Why are these dreams tormenting me?"
"Eric," the familiar angelic voice said, "God is with you no matter what happens to you. Your dreams are your innermost fears brought to consciousness so you can deal with them and move on. They are truths that you have not considered and possible realities which may or may not happen."
"Please, tell me. What are the truths? What are these realities? I must know so I can understand and deal with them."
"Lance may move on with his life. Lance may have found someone that he wants to spend the rest of his life with. I am not telling you it is a fact or a lie. I am telling you it is a possibility, a possibility that you must accept in yourself.
"The demon Macai has brought you pain and agony. He has caused you to lose time with your loved ones. He has caused much pain and suffering in the past and plans to do so again.
"You must stop him. Channel your anger at your loss to him. He is an immortal, irredeemable creature who deserves no mercy. God has no mercy for him. He deserves none from a mortal. Loose your wrath upon him. Let him feel suffering as he has never felt it before."
At the same time these harsh words were spoken to me, I felt the divine love of God flowing into me, strengthening me for the task ahead. I had to use the anger and focus it upon evil. That is not a sin. Not when it is an immortal demon. A human being, however, would deserve something much different: punishment for evil deeds, of course, but always the option of forgiveness and change. A chance to be reborn, to have a new life.
Macai was not innocent. Macai was not human. He was the embodiment of evil and greed and he was going to be stopped by me. He guaranteed it by killing me.
