Tales of an Immortal

Chapter 3: Tessa

Paula's was the best soul food restaurant, at least in my opinion, that I'd ever eaten from. They served everything from red beans and rice, to crawfish etoufee, to shrimp gumbo. And they always had a smooth jazz band or musician to keep a mellow mood. It was my absolute favorite restaurant.

We were ushered to a seat. Remy and I both ordered shrimp gumbo. Remy also ordered us a couple of glasses of red wine.

"I'm not really much of a drinker, Remy," I said as the waiter left, getting nervous inside. Was he trying to get me drunk?

"Non? Okay, then I'll drink both glasses," he replied. "I'm very good at holding my liquor."

"Cool," I replied relieved.

"I'm not trying to get you drunk to get in your pants if that's what you're thinking," he replied.

I looked back at him nervously. "Are you sure you're not psychic?"

"I can feel you being nervous," he replied. "I meant what I said earlier. We can take this as slow as you want. I'm not sure in fact I wanna rush into this either. Oh thank you," he said to the waiter, who I hadn't even noticed because I was staring at Remy the whole time. He set a glass in front of Remy, and one in front of me, and we each took a small sip.

"Really? I mean, good. That's good," I replied. "I mean, you're the first guy...I mean...yeah, no experience with guys." Shut the fuck up! my conscience seems to say.

"Bien, then, I'll be the first. Guy you dated," he replied. Apparently he was nervous too. He explained why. "You're the first guy I've ever dated too. Not my first period, but the first guy I'd ever start something serious...not that we're serious, I mean, are we serious?"

His own nervousness began to make me giggle. "Yes, I believe we're on the road to being serious. I mean, we already live together."

"Okay, good. So, we're serious. Bien," he replied with a soft smile. "You laugh at Gambit's nervousness?"

"I mean, I thought I had more reason to be nervous."

"You're not alone, chere. I mean you're my first since..." Gambit had a look of fear, like he was about to say too much.

But I already knew what he meant. I knew that both Remy and Taran before me had been Sinister's bed mates. I knew this because I was told...no, Hades was told...these things...while Hades...I...shared his bed. I remember trying my best to fight back against the demon which had possessed me, but I had no choice but to experience these situations which the demon took pleasure in.

"You're not alone either, Remy," I replied, looking into his eyes, putting my hand over his. "We'll get through this. Together."

"Together, eh?" he replied. "I think I like the sound o' dat." At that point, the waiter arrived with our food.

"Bien. Merci, mon..." Remy completely stopped talking as something caught his eye. I followed his gaze to a rather attractive woman, wearing a very tight fitting designer outfit, a long black dress with a split up to the knee, and designer high heel boots and handbag. Her jet black hair was done in a very old fashioned, but elegant, hairstyle, pulled up into a tight bun. The woman's entire presence, her looks, the way she walked, showed not only that she was wealthy, but that she wasn't to be messed with.

"Waiter," Remy said, getting the waiter's attention again. "Please wrap this stuff to go." Then, to me, "Kevin, wait here, I'll be right back."

"Remy, wait!" but he ignored me and ran out. Some relationship this was going to be if he was going to run after strange women.

I sighed and sat there, waiting for the waiter to return with the to-go boxes. I took a sip of wine...and then the strangest shit happened. I felt...something...someone close? I couldn't tell what it was, like sirens were going off in my head or something, that I could be in danger...

I stood and turned around...oh my god!

"Hi," he said.

"H...Hi," I replied. Standing in front of me was, possibly, the sexiest guy I've ever seen. Maybe hotter than Remy. He was tall, maybe 6'2, his hair was blond, but cut really short, and he had these crystal blue eyes. And did I mention he was hot, like muscular too? He wore this kinda loose-fitting black dress shirt, and black slacks, and he was, like so hot!! And the black trench coat, which I was already digging from Remy, looked even hotter on him. Well, not on him, but hanging down from his shoulder courtesy of his right hand. Okay, really sounding like a school girl.

"So, you got dumped by that guy, too huh?" he asked me.

"Y-yeah," I replied. "Um, you know him?"

"Yeah, he's such an asshole. He did the same thing to me a couple years back," he replied. "I got over it though. Got right back in there."

"Cool," I replied, still in awe.

"I'm Devin by the way," he said, shaking my hand.

"Kevin," I replied, shaking his.

"Nice to meet you. I see you're getting it to go." He said.

"Huh?" I looked again at the table, where the food was being wrapped up by the waiter. "Oh yeah." I looked around, realized that Remy was the one with the money, so how was I going to pay for the food?

"I got you covered," Devin said, dropping some money on the table for the waiter. "Keep the change."

"Thank you sir!!" the waiter replied, eyeing the 50 that he just received. Our meal collectively was only 25. Damn, this guy's rich too?

"So, what say we take our grub elsewhere? My apartment's near here."

"Sounds like a plan," I reply, grabbing the bag with our food and following him out. After all, without Remy, how else was I going to get around, get fed? That and this guy seemed to have some sort of pull over me.

We walked along, headed to wherever his car was, parked along the street, and then, in the middle of the sidewalk, he stop, turns to me, and kisses me.

Now I know what I said, I wanted the relationship to go slow, but with Gambit dumping me, suddenly I really didn't care anymore. I kissed him back eagerly. We broke apart temporarily, and then he pulled me into a nearby alley. He pushed me against the wall and began kissing me again.

"Mmm, you taste so good," he whispered in my ear. "It's really a shame that I have to kill you."

"Huh?" I said, still lightheaded from the kiss...OOOOWWWW!!

I keeled over on the ground in pain from the knee he delivered to my stomach, dropping the food. Damn, he was strong.

"Nothing personal. You're very hot. But I want to be the One. And to do that, I need as much power as I can. You understand?" he said, pulling apart the left side of his coat to reveal a sword, a kitana, in its scabbard on his left hip. He pulled out the sword, flipped it in his hand, then pulled back to swing.

Was he going to behead me? I quickly changed into my mist form, the blade passing harmlessly through me.

"Wow. That's a different ability. I'll have to add that to my pheromone power after I kill you," he said. Pheremones? So that's how he lured me out here?

"Better have tried," I replied, and just before he swung again, I used my shadow teleport ability, going through the ground beneath him, reappearing behind him, then kicked him in the back, causing him to slam into the alley wall.

Devin swung blindly back at me, and I groaned as he cut my arm. Though it hurt, I simply concentrated and, within seconds, the part of my arm which was injured turned to dark mist form, then when it returned to normal, it was healed.

"Why the hell are you trying to kill me?" I asked as I dodged another swing, then rolled to avoid another. Damn this guy was fast! Not like bullet-fast, but like more than a normal person should be. Then again, who am I to describe what is and isn't normal?

"You can't be serious? You know nothing of the Game?" he replied, swinging at me again.

"The Game? What the hell are you talking about?!" I shouted, blocking his next thrust by summoning my power over shadows, making a forcefield in front of me.

"You don't know about the Game? You don't even know what the hell you are?!" Kevin looked at me. When I shook my head in the negative, he began to laugh.

"What the hell's so funny?" I demanded.

"Dude, you're an Immortal," he replied.

"A what?" I said confused.

"You knew when I was coming earlier, right? That sickening feeling of paranoia when I came to your table? You could sense me. You're an Immortal. Well, at least you were," Devin said before swinging at me again.

I blocked with a forcefield, which I expanded to thrust him against the wall. I summoned a scythe of death energy and threw it at him, hitting him square in the chest. I became sick as I felt the familiar feelings of death, as he slumped to the ground. I forgot the food completely, running back for the hotel. I could get my stuff and leave then.

But upon passing the other alleyway near the restaurant, I saw Remy. He was holding his staff at the neck of the woman from earlier, who was leaned against the wall of the other building.

"Remy? What the hell is going on?" I demanded, entering the alley.

"Kevin? I told you to wait in the restaur---AARGH!" he shouted out in pain as the woman swiftly pushed aside his staff, then kicked him—hard!—in the genitals. She then pulled a gun out of her purse.

"No!" I shouted, and barely thinking about it, I summoned a shadow to enshroud around the gun, and then brought it to my hand, almost like a sort of telekinesis.

"Stop or I'll shoot!" I shouted at her. "Now what the hell is going on?" I demanded again.

"You won't shoot me. You don't have the heart, Kevin," she replied. How the hell did she know my name?

I lost my focus at that time, and didn't notice her reach into her purse. She threw a metallic object at the ground and it exploded, knocking me and Remy backward into the alley wall.

I tried to see where she was, but I couldn't see anything. Blind? The white haze clouding my eyes, finally lessened. I looked up, and saw Remy standing over me, reaching his hand for me.

"You alright, chere?" he asked, reaching out a hand.

"Yeah, I'm fine," I replied grabbing his hand. I looked around. The woman was no where to be seen. I still held her gun, though, and I hid it in my pocket.

"C'mon, let's go. Don't wanna get caught up with the bang from that flash bomb."

"Okay," I replied, and Remy, still holding my hand, began walking with me back to the hotel.

"I thought I told you t' stay in the restaurant," he asked me, not loud or mean, but in a slightly scolding voice. He and I were sitting next to each other on the bed.

"Yeah, well, I thought that...I thought you were leaving me for that woman," I replied.

"Moi? What give you de impression Gambit a player?" he asked, his Cajun accent more and more prevalent with his anger and his shock.

"Well...I dunno...you are extremely hot..."

"Chere, I ain't a playa. I said I like you. I was worried for y' safety."

"My safety?" I asked. "From that woman?"

"Yes. Her name is Tessa, and she's bad news. See there's this rich high roller society known as the Hellfire Club. They's all over d' world. You ever hear of dem?"

"Yes, from Sinister," I replied. He cringed hearing his name.

"Well, what not everyone knows about it is that it also is run by mutants. They take their names from chess pieces. The Black King of the New York branch is Sebastian Shaw. His personal assistant is Tessa."

"So what does this have to do with us?" I asked.

"Another t'ing no one know about d' Hellfire Club is that they thrive on committin' all sort of high end crime, and love expanding they empire. If she's here, Shaw ain't too far behind. And who knows what other kind of trouble they got in store, or who else is with them."

"What makes Shaw so dangerous?" I wondered aloud.

"Because not only is he a powerful man when it come to money, but he's even more powerful a mutant. His power allow him to absorb all sort of kinetic energy attack and convert it into amazing super strength."

"Okay, that is bad ass."

"Yeah. He done smoked the X-men many a time. Wait, what happened to your arm?"

"Nothing," I replied, covering the wound with my hand. Or the tear. The blood was still around the cut where my shirt had been ripped because of Devin's blade.

"Dat ain't nothing, chere. What happened to you?" he demanded, gently turning me to face him.

So I reluctantly explained what happened, from when he left the alley, to when I found him and Tessa in the alley, not leaving out any details.

"An Immortal?" he asked, scratching his head. "So you live forever?"

"Well, not really forever, I guess, if he were able to kill me. He was trying to take my head, Remy."

"Dat's strange, chere. Don't worry, though chere. We'll sort all that out later. Don't think on it none."

"But I killed him, Remy."

"You did what you had to. He woulda killed you." I had to admit he had a point, but that didn't make it any better.

"I guess you're right," I replied before taking a large yawn.

"Tired, chere?"

"Very."

"Let's get some rest, non?" he replied and turned off the lights. He rolled over and wrapped an arm around me, protectively.

I snuggled back to him, but not too close. Feeling comfortable, I fell asleep in his arms, and even amid the freak lightning storm outside, I slept peacefully.

Devin awoke with a start. Looking around him, he noticed his sword on the ground. He picked it up, placing it again in his scabbard.

"I must have that power," he said to himself with a grin as he walked out of the alleyway.

A ringing in his head was the only warning he had before he was thrust backward again by an invisible force. He stood to his feet, a young brunette woman stood at the head of the alley, sword unsheathed.

"Hmmm. Let's go, bitch," Devin said. He hated women.

The woman tried to toss random items, litter, and sharp objects lining the alley at him, using some sort of telekinetic powers. Devin's mutant speed and agility allowed him to dodge all these items, and eventually put him right next to the woman.

She swung her sword, which clashed with his. She was strong too? No, she was adding telekinesis to her thrust, trying to wear him down.

Devin quickly moved behind her, thrusting his sword through her back, and she groaned in pain as blood spilled from her chest. As he pulled his sword out, she dropped her sword and slumped to her knees.

Without a grunt, Devin spun on his heel, swinging his blade, decapitating the beautiful young woman. No sooner had her now permanently dead body hit the ground, the sky overhead darkened dramatically, and lightning began to rise from the ground around her body, flow up to the sky, then strike him and his surroundings, ripping through Devin, shocking him, as a look of pure maniacal delight spread over his face, and he laughed as the lightning enhanced him with her skill, and her ability.

When the electricity finally died down, Devin looked down and realized that he was hovering above the ground. Satisfied, he used his stolen ability to fly back to his apartment.
