To those who've been reading Tales of Sol. I want you to know that while there is sex in this story. That is not is sole purpose and yes I do hope the sex sense makes you all hard and gets you off.
Sol is an adaption from my childhood favorite show Captain Planet and the Planeteers, The cartoon showed us that the world can be a better place if we took a few moments to care for it.
Tales of Sol is meant to express hope.
It is also shows how music can have an impact in our lives. While I don't know if my favorite bands 98 Degrees, Backstreet Boys or Nsync have ever read this. They saw me through some of the hardest moments of my life and offered in their own way hope. To them I say thank you.
I dedicate the Tales of Sol to all of my brothers and sisters of the US armed service past, present, and future.
I like to thank my friends who I had the privilege showing these chapters with. They helped with editing and inspiration,
John Rivera, Albert-Russ Alan Rivera-Odum, Derbe.D. Hunte Yvette Ortiz Samuel Diaz Jr for all their help in Making The Tales of Sol an enjoyable story to write.

The Aftermath
Brian and the rest of the Backstreet Boys sat by Mike's couch, trying to catch their breath.
"Man, that was close," AJ was the first to say.
Before anyone could respond, the sound of someone coming up from the basement caught their attention.
They all jumped up and ran to the basement door when they saw Jake Morow walk in.
All five of them exclaimed, "Oh!" in total disappointment.
Jake sighed dramatically, then joked, "Gee, I am sorry to disappoint you all," before stepping aside to reveal Mike Pennock's tired but smiling face. "But I believe you were all expecting this goofball," Jake declared.
They all rushed to Mike's side. Nick even jokingly shoved Jake out of the way, making him laugh. "I will take that as a yes," Nick said.
At the very least, Howie hugged Jake. "We cannot forget about you, Jake; we are still here because of you."
Howie caught Jake off guard, and a hitch became lodged in his throat.
Everyone returned to the living room, with Brian holding Mike's hand and leading the way. Everyone took a seat on the nearest couch or chair. Mike and Brian were still joined at the hip, never letting go of each other's loving embrace. It did not take long for everyone to bombard him with questions about everything and anything related to the global crisis. Mike began to inform everyone about the situation after being given the opportunity to speak. "I have a much better understanding of everything now that my powers have returned and my connection to the world has been restored," Mike said. He spoke of Count Mullack and his reign of terror in Camelot, and how only Gaia had the power to stop him. "Count Mullack planned his revenge for centuries, and with the Planeteers' deaths, he was able to carry it out," Mike explained. "But he was not planning on Captain Planet surviving within you." Mike nodded and said, "However," Mike said, "he did feel Cap's death and knew that I housed his spirit, which explains all those strange Kailiff attacks." AJ asked, "But how did you miss the mad wizard? " But how did you miss the mad wizard?" Mike sighed in disgust, but he remained truthful. "When I first encountered those Bringers in New York, I was still learning how to use my powers," Mike reminded everyone. "To keep my mind from being overwhelmed by the barrage of information I was and still am receiving, Gaia made it possible for me to receive them at a slow and steady pace," Mike explained. "So the information on Count Mullack was there," Kevin said, nodding. "Perhaps it was slowly making its way to you, along with everything else you have to absorb." "Yes, there was no need for me to even be aware of that mad warlock at the time," Mike agreed. That reminder surprised AJ. "Like protecting us from Brian's crazed and abusive ex-boyfriend," Nick said, glaring. AJ was taken aback by that reminder. "I forgot about that loser." And he had your undivided attention. "If it had not been for that jerk, you might have had time to go over all that junk you are getting," AJ said. "When did it all fall into place?" Kevin wondered.
"Hope Island," Mike revealed. "I spent days looking for the jerk only to discover Gaia already knew what was going on; only she could not tell me because Count Mullack managed to drain nearly all of her powers, trapping Sol within me. If it had not been for Tela's ability to contact Sol, who was still trapped within me, I would still be staring at the Lair's main computer monitors, watching endless possibilities fly across and killing everyone in the process," Jake observed his shipmate, noticing the self-loathing in his body language at the thought of his failure.
"Mike, we were all there beside you, and our friends in the Watcher's Council were not being very helpful either," Jake added. "The possibilities were limitless."
"I do not care about the what-ifs here, Mike; you saved us, you saved the world, and you have proven that you are the Guardian," Nick said, shaking his head.
Everyone agreed to get up and hug Mike, and Jake got up and said, "Mike, I am sorry for how harshly I judged you for going after SHIELD."
That piqued the interest of the Backstreet Boys, who exclaimed, "SHIELD?"
Jake and I both laughed. I told them about using the Geocruiser and a hologram of a Shadow Vessel to distract SHIELD long enough for me to invade the Helicarrier Argus and obtain the information I needed to narrow down the search.
"Mike, I am not sure if I should congratulate you or hit you on the side of the head," exclaimed Howie.
"Howie, Dave, and I both scolded Mike on what appeared to be a reckless plan, but this was a desperate moment, Mike had to remind me that we were at war and he did what had to be done to get answers," Jake said.
Howie was still spellbound but even Brian said, "Howie, I know Mike, he had to take several leaps of faith on this, we were all at peril here, I am so moved that Mike would risk so much for our benefit,"
"Mike, we are all damn lucky to have you by our side when the chips are down and we have nothing else," said AJ, who had been silent the entire time.
"Gaia told me I would need you guys as much as you would need me." I was humbled by their love and support. It was late, and we all decided to go to bed.
"My Guardian," Brian said in my ear as he cuddled up next to me in our bed.
The Wizard was deep within the hot, humid sticking of rotten flesh mixed with other scents that made one want to vomit in the Eternal Pit. Count Mullack sat naked, chained to the granite wall of the hideous iron jail cell gate. The monster was able to enter this literal hell hole after the gate creaked open. "So you not only used my minions without my permission for your idiotic purpose," Lucifer sneered. "You only succeeded in failing miserably,"
Count Mullack defied the monster, saying, "That pompous ass loser got lucky."
Lucifer went on as if the little man had not even said anything. "You were a loser centuries ago, Mullack, and you still are; I will enjoy seeing you suffer in the pit of eternal torment," Lucifer said as he snapped his obnoxious scarlet fingers. The Lord of Hell's last joyful sound was Warlock's girlish screams. "That young bastard is more dangerous than I thought, and teaching that idiot Mullack his mistakes will make me feel better."
I awoke early the next morning and prepared a large breakfast for everyone while listening to my supercomputer give me a progress report on how things were beginning to return to normal. The Earth was on its way to recovery, and life in Philadelphia and around the world was resuming.
I have yet to see what our probes detected, but I was relieved that I did a good job. My house started shaking like it was in the middle of a mini-earthquake. Fortunately, it was just a bunch of rowdy guys getting out of bed and heading down the stairs. They all came into my kitchen in various stages of undress. Kevin and Howie arrived in pajama pants and no shirt; Nick and AJ were still in their boxers; and my beloved Brian at least managed to put on some clothes, but they looked haphazard. He was absolutely adorable as he yawned and rubbed the grit from his eyes. "Good morning, Mike," he said. Brian's yawn was contagious, and they all tried to greet me while yawning. "Good morning to you all," I said, still trying to make them breakfast. Brian walked over and wrapped his arms around me, giving me a peck on the cheek. "Cut it out!" His signature shit-eating grin appeared as we turned to see AJ. Brian, in a witty manner, stuck out his tongue. AJ, in quick wit, said, "Save it for that man in your arms, Bri. I don't need to see the tongue," AJ ribbed. We all laughed as the endless banter continued throughout breakfast. I sighed in contentment and sent a silent prayer to the Earth and God the Father, `Thank you for this moment,'
We wrapped up breakfast now that things were getting back to normal and life had to go on. But the Backstreet Boys weren't due to hit the road again until tomorrow morning.
They made the decision to simply hang out at my house while I had to head to the Lair to take care of a few loose ends regarding this mess that a Warlock from the sixth century had made.
A short while later, I made my way to the Lair via my covert subway route. I saw that Jake and Dana were there, but Gregg took his daughter home once she had recovered.
Oddly enough, Dave was missing too. I had inquired as to my mentor's whereabouts from Jake and Dana. Jake informed me that Dave was organizing a party for those involved in conflict with Count Mullack, and even I had to admit the party was much needed.
Tela had entered the Command Center, and we spent a few moments talking after I asked BEATTI to make contact with the Watcher's Council so I could inform them of the events.
The Watcher's Council would only answer if Dana had made the request; obviously, I got to mend some bridges here. Still, they needed to be informed. When I revealed Count Mullack was the culprit, I saw the name had meaning as the Watchers' expressions all hardened.
When Quentin asked why I hadn't informed the Council of the Kailiff and Bringer attacks, I told them about Devin and how he was stalking Brian and the rest of the Backstreet Boys.
Travers acknowledged, "You were looking for a madman at the time, and that madman had your complete attention."
"Not my complete attention, Devin did take up a good deal along with my training sections with the X-Men," I told the Watcher
"Regardless, you had at the time a situation that needed you to focus and not something that just seemed strange; I am not placing fault, just trying to understand what other things were going on when this happened."
I said, "Yes, at the time Devin himself was a mystery to me, but I knew he was a threat. I was able to handle the Bringers and Kaliffs with very little trouble or concern, whereas I had already put out a burning studio and many dangers to the group."
"I certainly understand that what was in front of you at the time was more concerned with the Backstreet Boys' safety than those Kaliffs."
Dana did say, "I know I told you of Isabelle and those Bringers that were attacking her,"
Travers conceded, "With everything that was going on, it all seemed like random violence that none of us knew was tied to a 6th-century warlock. I am not blaming you for missing anything; these were unusual circumstances muddled by much more important priorities at the time. I just ask that in the future, if you are randomly attacked by those thugs, let us know so we can at least be made aware and help paint a bigger picture. We should have to again." Once we were all up to speed on everything dealing with Count Mullack, I was ready to get back to cleaning up his mess.
Once we all said our goodbyes, I had BEATTI go over everything. Jake went to the Silo to take care of the Geocruiser. I did ask Gaia once again if she wanted me to return them. She replied, "Mike, you have a much greater need for them than I do. I am very pleased that you are making use of it along with the Ecocopter. You can also have the Ecosub if it will help you protect my planet." I was more than willing if I could find a place for it.
It was hours later that I was standing in my bedroom. I was growling and cursing at myself as I looked at myself in the mirror and tried, for the umpteenth time, failing miserably at tying a bow tie around my neck.
I heard a soft chuckle come from behind me: "Are we having a problem?" I turned to see Brian with a shit-eating grin watching my hopeless attempts
"Ugh, I hate ties," I whined, fumbling with my tie, "Give me vampires and Sentinels any day," I complained
Brian came up to me, kissing me on the cheek "Here, let me help you," Brian softly said as he used the excuse to wrap his arms around my neck and take the time to passionately kiss me.
Between our lips locking, I tried to mumble, "You all asked if there was anything I couldn't do; well, now you found it." I closed my eyes as Brian helped fix my tie.
"I swear Dave made this formal wear just to get back at me," I growled half-heartedly. I could never be angry around Brian. He made it extremely difficult to stay mad when he had his arms still around me and was looking directly into my eyes. I could see all the love he had for me in his beautiful eyes. "Mike, you are going to be the hottest man out there," Brian swooned as he made me dance a little.
"Correction, Bri, you're already the hottest man." I kissed his cheek, making him blush.
With Brian's help, I was finally ready, but not before we took time to continue to passionately kiss.
Sadly, I had to put an end to our lovemaking. We had a party to get to. Once I pulled my pickup out of the garage, Brian took the moment to request BEATTI arm up our home. My computer spoke through the truck's speakers, both informing us the house was secured and telling us to have a good time.
As we drove out to the Philadelphia Geothermal Power Plant, Dave decided to have the party there. I will admit it was a great relief hearing the modified diesel engine going.
Breaking the silence of the drive, "So Mike, how does it feel to have the Earth back?" Brian asked
"Wonderful, especially since I saved the most important person in my life," I replied, bringing my man's hand up and giving it a tender kiss as we held each other's hands.
"Mike?" Brian questioned softly, "Yes, Love?" I prompted
"How does that kind of presence feel in your mind?" Brian inquired. I could tell he was interested the moment he learned of my connection to Earth.
I took a moment to do the best I could to explain it to him in a way that made sense, and said, "I wish I could fully describe it to you, babe," in a way that defied comprehension and was somewhat metaphysical. I told him, "But this is all I can do; consider it your conscience, that voice we hear when we are about to do something wrong." "Then think about that voice saying to you, Brian, no matter what others think, I am there for you."
I observed Brian attempting to visualize it. "Now think about emotions of love and joy; think of them as blankets that you can wrap around yourself, yet no matter how many times you try, you can never completely wrap yourself in them." I could see Brian struggling to picture what I am saying.
For this particular question, there were not enough words to adequately answer it. I pulled Brian's hand to my lips and kissed it. I watched as a new realization crossed his beautiful face as I sent the tiniest fraction of the Earth's present into him. "Wow!" Brian awed
"That is just a tiny bit, sweetie," I said with a sheepish grin.
"Keeping the rest for yourself?" With an eyebrow raised, Brian inquired.
I told him, "No, Luv, even I would not be able to handle the Earth full presents in my mind if it were not for Sol."
The sun had already set when my Dodge Ram arrived at the geothermal plant. The area surrounding the Philadelphia Geothermal Power Plant was fully restored and thriving. The plants' wonderful fragrance. The air filled with the sound of wildlife. I was delighted to see life, in all its forms, reborn. I listened for a moment. The sounds of crickets chirping, frogs croaking, and occasionally the high-pitched chirp of bats filled the night air, blending with the sounds of generators and other equipment connected to the power plant. I was overcome with happiness when I heard their well-known voices and realized how much I had missed them. Brian said, "You have guarded what God has given us," in a slow, meaningful voice. Love. "Every living thing, no matter how big or small, owes you gratitude," we said while admiring the breathtaking scenery. I was struck by his words as I processed everything. We paused beneath a blanket of stars, shared a heartfelt kiss, and then carried on.
The Backstreet Boys had performed here numerous times, so Brian was not unfamiliar with the location. We quickly made our way to the reception hall. I could clearly hear soft melodies coming from the doorway, even from fifty feet away. Even though I-95 was more than a hundred miles away, I could hear the faint sound of cars thanks to my keen hearing.
The nightlife was drowned out as we entered the hall by the overlapping voices and music. While Brian and I navigated the crowd, I was happy to have my powers back, but I did not have time to think about it. However, I could have continued listening, but I chose not to so I could enjoy myself.
Gazing about the concert hall, I recollected my previous visit. Before it was bombed, Jeff and the other members of 98 Degrees had performed here. The hall still held a good number of people despite having been rebuilt. I was unable to resist missing Jeff. We had not seen each other in a long time, and I still feel some sadness for him.
For tonight, Dave went above and beyond with his food and drinks, even though it was a small gathering. Regarding that, Dave was conversing with Jean Gray and Scott Summers.
Gregg, Jake, and Tela were conversing while Logan played with Krystal. Kevin and AJ were in the corner with Gambit and Rogue.
Blaylock and Dana were conversing with Nick and Howie. Blaylock appeared restless, as if he would rather be anywhere else than here, while Dana seemed content with whatever chat she was having with them.
Logan laughed when he saw that Krystal had noticed me and had left him hanging to run in my direction. "Daddy says you saved us," my niece exclaimed as Krystal leaped up to embrace me. I instinctively grabbed hold of the little girl and leaned down to welcome her into my waiting arms.
Logan approached. "This guy saved us all, kid." I could hear a lot of respect coming from Wolverine under his rough exterior.
Despite my niece being in my arms, I turned to the mutant to let him know he had my attention. "My friend, without you and the X-Men, I never would have reached Count Mullock; this was a team effort."
Logan started to say, "Maybe, but you and that wicked sword of yours."
I pointed to my niece's small ears while coughing and saying, "Ahem.".
After seeing the hint, Logan quickly changed his intended statement to, "You both got the job done."
I hugged my niece back, saying, "The Guardian will always be there, Little One," as I peered down into her sweet brown eyes.
"Uncle Mike, thank you." Krystal gave me a hug. Krystal gave Brian a hug too. I watched my partner weep as he gave her a hug in return.
In order to socialize with everyone, Brian and I briefly parted ways. I took Krystal to get us some soda, and he went to hang out with his bandmates. Gregg is going to kill me for giving my niece sugar at this late hour.
After breaking off his talk with Tela, Jake went in search of Dana and discovered me giving Krystal some chocolate. "You really do lead a risky life," joked Jake.
I said nonchalantly, "As her uncle, I have to spoil Krystal and then return her to her father." which only served to increase Jake's laughter. "Maybe, but Gregg will make you wish that you were back in front of SHIELD."
I grinned and said, "I can live with it," as Jake and Dana went somewhere else. I then went in search of my mentor. After jumping out of my arms, Krystal fled in search of her father.
I walked around until I came upon Dave talking to Jean and Cyclops. Dave waved at me to come sit with them.
"Mike, how are you feeling?" my mentor asked with a smile. Dave queried
"That is funny, I did not take a sword to my back, I was about to ask you the same question?" I asked, "I am just fine," in response to my mentor's question. I turned a worried look on my mentor and smiled, saying, "How about you?"
"It is not everyday I get a sword in my back, but thanks to you, I am just fine," Dave smiled back at me.
As I said, "Good," a wave of relief passed over me.
"How is the planet Earth doing?" Dave questioned.
When I covered the globe with my hand and held it to my chest, a momentary burst of light shot through my shirt, causing Scott, Jean, and Dave to all give a little chuckle.
Earth's love was coursing through my heart; "She is here," I grinned, her love crystal clear in my mind.
I waved to everyone here and said, "The Earth expresses her thanks to all in this room."
"When do you guys have to head back to New York?" I asked my mutant friends.
"In the morning," said Jean.
"I will be heading back with them so I can ask Professor X to help me train better in fighting vampires and others," Tela said as she approached.
"I will not force you to fight vampires if you are not comfortable doing so, Tela," I said hastily.
Tela gave me a shocked look and said, "Mike With nothing but your military training, a really big sword, and determination, I just watched you defeat a wizard and his demon allies."
"If you can do that without your powers, I can do that with my powers," Tela said, leaving me in awe.
"I understand and I too have to make a return trip myself soon; there is more training for me to do," I smiled
"We look forward to helping you understand your powers better," Scott remarked in earnest.
Jean turned to Tela and said, "And we will help you too."
Changing the topic to something a little more pleasant, Dave remarked, "Mike, I never got the chance to see what you have learned from the X-Men and what it is you can now do now that you have full access to your powers."
I nodded. "We will meet outside the Lair Dave soon," turning to Scott Summers. "When do you have to leave?"
Cyclops responded, "After the party, now that things are back to normal, Professor X wants to be back in New York as soon as possible."
I nodded. "I understand there is always a crisis somewhere," I said. "I have to get the Sea Dragon back into action and do some more work on the Lair myself. I would have preferred to use it instead of the Geocruiser when I went up against the helicarrier."
"Please pardon me." The room fell silent as an unidentified voice speaking into a microphone was heard, and we all turned to face Nick Carter's stage. "We have something we want to say," he went on.
Nick grinned and looked at me. "A very close friend of ours once told us that when we sing it is like a prayer and it brings great joy to the world," he said.
"We would like to take this moment to thank that person for putting everything on the line when everything seemed hopeless," AJ picked up the phone. "So after coming to the brink of death, and back."
"I can see that you've been crying" Brian initially
"You can't hide it with a lie," Brian sang the next verse
I began singing along with them. Dave merely laughed, remaining silent.
I have just discovered that if there is a lesson to be learned, you should never take anything for granted. Enjoy it while it lasts because moments like this will not come again.
After they finished with More Than That, they came up with the next song
And although AJ was supposed to lead off, Brian grabbed the microphone and turned to face me as he began to sing "The One," saying things like, "I guess you lost when I met you."
"But still there were tears in your eyes," My boy sang his heart out
"So out of trust and I knew, No more than mysteries and lie" Brian sang
The remaining Backstreet Boys participated in the performance of "There you were, wild and free."
Reaching out like you needed me" Like the rings of the Planeteers, their combined voices were incredible..
I joined them in singing, "The helping hand to make it right," as they sang.
"I am holding you all through the night,"
I could feel the love and happiness in the room as they sang, and I could also feel Brian's love as he sang while staring right at me.
I tried to block out all other sounds during the spontaneous concert, but I felt a Ping from the Earth--the first since she had been restored. I knew trouble was calling when I heard a faint whimper cut through the music. I had to concentrate on the sound and locate its source, even with my lover's lovely voice. I could see the poor thing straining to get out of its situation in my mind's eye, and I could feel the pain of sympathy coursing through me as I heard its cries. "I have to go, Dave!" I quickly informed my mentor. The creature's cries became unbearable for me to ignore. Feeling the cool night air on my face, I turned my attention to the Earth as I ran out of the hall. "Mother, where should I go?" I asked silently, seeking guidance. A breeze blew past me, bearing a direction-indicating scent. I did as it said, and my clothes changed to become my Guardian attire as I ran. I was prepared to assist the creature in need and face whatever lay ahead.
"Where did Mike go?" Brian asked as he made his way back to the hall from the stage. Dave answered, "He said he received some sort of distress call." "Do you think I should go after him?" Dana asked as she walked up to them. "He might need a slayer just to be on the safe side," Dave said, nodding.
I stopped as I made my way far into the forest to get my bearings. "Mother?" She gave me another Ping in response to my call. All of a sudden, I heard barking and a slight whining in my ears. It was a red fox kit that I found stuck in a bear trap after I followed the sound. I was moved to tears by the poor creature's agonized cries as it struggled to free its paw. Carefully, so as not to frighten the kit any more, I approached it.
A voice called out my alter ego's name, "Guardian?" as I stood there in the dark. It was Razeel's voice, and I knew it, but for now I had to ignore her. I didn't want to scare the young fox that was in front of me. The poor thing kept whimpering and howling as it attempted to break free of the trap, which already made the fox nervous. I took my time approaching it so as not to frighten it. It still yipped in terror even after I put a soft hand on its head to console it. "Hold on little one, calm yourself," I said in a soothing voice as I extended my hand. My hand was surrounded by a golden aura that, upon contact with the startled fox, gradually became calmer. "You will be out in no time at all," I reassured him. Grasping the chilly metal trap with my hands, I let out a growl and opened it. It was then that Razeel emerged, decked out in her new look. If not for my sensitive eyes, she would have completely disappeared in the darkness of the night.
"Razeel, hold on. Keep your distance from me. You could scare my little friend," I warned her. Razeel came to a halt as I placed my hand on the kit is small, injured paw. There were numerous breaks in it. My hands began to glow a golden color, illuminating the small fox. When the light faded, I still clutched the fox's paw, but it was completely healed.
The fox and I were quickly swallowed up by the night's darkness, but my hearing remained acute. I heard a little fox yelp in delight because it was not only free, but also feeling much better. The fox started pouncing on my feet in a playful manner. Razeel inquired, "Is it safe to approach now?" "Yes," I said, kneeling down to pick up the small kit. The furball began licking my hand enthusiastically. Razeel approached me, and as she did, I turned to face her and said, "My powers have returned." The Power of Heart picked up on this little fox's cries, and I had to come to its aid." I began caressing the tiny body without thinking, soothing his terror. The fox was content to let me continue, nudging my hand over its small head. Razeel was concerned as well as relieved. "I am glad your abilities have returned. Seeing this little guy trapped wasn't pleasant, We thought you were going to find a vampire or something else," she confessed.
It soon became apparent that the lost puppy was too young to be left alone as I looked for clues leading back to its mother. I asked the puppy, but it did not respond when I asked where its mother was. My blood boiled when I noticed what I was looking at more closely. The mother of the pup was among the dead foxes that littered the forest floor. I pulled the fox close to me and gave it a somber embrace, expressing my regret for its passing. "Little one, I am so sorry," I apologized. With me was Razeel, who questioned what could be more terrifying than vampires. I activated my combadge and promptly requested an animal rescue squad to arrive at our location.
"Guardian, what is wrong?" Razeel asked. Since she did not seem to know what was going on. I said, "Poachers, Razeel," in a stern tone. Razeel questioned, "Poachers?" before I could continue. I realized it was the Animal Rescue team when I heard the sound of approaching vehicles. "Guardian?" I heard a moment later. I heard
I called out to the ranger and a team of workers to let them know that I had found something, and they made their way over to me. When one of the employees inquired as to what was wrong, the ranger identified himself and his companion as Lieutenant Roger Walker and Sergeant Alex Manhym. I gave them the fox kit and explained that I had discovered the kit in a bear trap after hearing whimpers. There was more to the story, though. A ball of light appeared when I raised my hand, revealing several dead foxes spread out across the forest floor. Lieutenant Walker questioned whether poachers might have been responsible, and Sergeant Manhym requested that additional agents arrive at the scene. I retorted that it was something darker than a simple fox hunt. I got an assurance from Sergeant Manhym that the kit and other foxes would be taken to an animal hospital to find out when and how they passed away.
I closed my eyes, placed my hand on the tree where I had discovered the fox kit, and ran my hand along the bark, looking for signs of what had transpired. I discovered multiple gunshot holes in the tree with bullets still embedded. "These should help here," I said.
Lt. Walker gathered the bullets and additional proof to demonstrate that poachers were behind the incident.
More personnel and animal rescue vehicles showed up to pick up the deceased foxes.
Razeel and I were the only ones in the forest after the others had left. I had an emotional outburst and grabbed the bear trap out of the ground on impulse. I let out a cry that shook the forest, and Razeel scrambled for cover as hundreds of birds flew out in all directions. I hurled the bear trap skyward and, keeping my eyes peeled, I directed a fireball towards it, causing the torture instrument to turn to slag. I swore, "Why?" as I collapsed to the ground, my fist digging into the chilly dirt and providing no solace for my grief.
After I calmed down, Razeel approached me and said, "Mike, let us head back to the party."
We emerged from the woods, reverting to our usual selves, but I was too pissed off to be in the mood to go out. My emotions were all over the place by the time we arrived. Dave was the first person to approach me, and then Brian and the other Backstreet Boys.
My glum expression told Dave something was not right, so he cautiously inquired, "How did it go?" I could hardly contain my anger as I replied, "I need to get to the Lair," in a voice that sounded static from barely contained rage. I wasted no time in storming out the door and making my way to Dave's office. I returned to the Lair via the secret subway, determined to arrive before anyone could stop me.
Mike's abrupt departure and strange behavior surprised the group. Everyone except Dana, that is. Dave demanded an explanation from Razeel, asking what had happened. She explained that she had discovered Mike with a fox pup that had apparently called to him. Kevin added that it was not unusual for Mike to hear such things, but he suspected that there was more to the story. Razeel continued her tale, revealing that Mike had claimed the fox was trapped in a bear trap and that when he formed a fireball to illuminate the surrounding area. There were dozens of dead foxes on the ground and Mike was taking it very hard.
Before Razeel had even finished her tale, I was already at the Lair, sitting at the main console, reviewing every probe from the Philadelphia Geothermal Power Plant and the surrounding area. I was even more enraged by what they disclosed. They verified all my suspicions.
Footsteps approached from behind me. Knowing how difficult this was for me, Dave spoke in a calm and soothing tone, saying, "Mike, Dana told us that you believe poachers were in the area."
My eyes were fixed on the screen, and it showed me what I was most afraid of. I snarled, "I do not believe it; I know it."
In an attempt to comfort me, Dave said, "Mike, you should be grateful that you saved that fox, even though I have no idea what is going through your mind right now." He put a very encouraging hand around my shoulder.
I told him, looking through all of the probes' data to find those lowlifes, "I am trying, Dave, but that is not what I am seeing." Dave looked at the monitor, seeing everything I was seeing, and nodded as he rested a comforting hand on my shoulder. Knowing me too well, he remarked, "Actually, I think that little fox is all you can see right now." A call from the Animal Rescue Service was being answered, BEATTI announced, breaking the solemn atmosphere of the Command Center. "Put them through, BEATTI," Dave replied. Over the speakers, we heard Alex's request: "Guardian?"
"Go ahead," I responded.
"We are still reviewing all the information about the foxes, and you may be right," Alex confirmed.
"What did you discover?" Dave inquired.
"Based on the number of shots," Alex started to respond.
I asked, "How is the fox kit doing?" as I cut him off.
"The small fox is not sick, but it is a little underweight from being imprisoned. But someone fixed its broken paw pretty well, so it should recover fully," Alex answered.
"But can you really let it go back into the wild?" I asked.
Alex replied, "We can not say for sure, but we think so."
My computer abruptly interrupted, saying, "Sir, our probes have spotted the poachers. They are on their way to Philadelphia International Airport," BEATTI said. The main monitor quickly switched to a live video feed of a rickety pickup truck speeding down the road. After giving the video a cursory glance, I bolt from my seat and sprint towards the silo.
I had the recently repaired Geocruiser tucked onto the helipad, ready for trouble. I hurriedly opened the side hatch, climbed aboard the environmentally friendly aircraft, and shut the hatch behind me. After settling down, I turned on the Geocruiser and positioned myself in front of the control panel. The helipad began to rise in the internal elevator shaft, causing a slight rumble that jolted me out of my seat partially. The silo was filled with the soft hum of the Geocruiser engine.
As my solar-powered plane ascended the silo, Dave's worried voice filled the cockpit: "Mike!" I could tell Dave was worried about me and the poachers I was about to confront by looking at the monitor. Who he was more scared for was the question because he didn't want me over reacting when dealing with the poaches
"I do not have time to waste," I declared, referring to the poachers and what they were carrying. I yelled over the radio, "Are mine." Glancing up, I saw the enormous silo doors opening and revealing the vast night sky above. When I suddenly jerked, the nimble craft's wings narrowly missed the enormous metal slabs by inches as the Geocruiser had barely passed the silo doors to the surface. I quickly engaged the full throttle on the flight controls. The Geocruiser took off at breakneck speed.
"I have called the authorities, Mike," Dave said over the speakers. I could hear the concern in his voice. I could not tell if Dave was more worried about me or the poachers. That was not my problem right now.
"Tell them to catch the poachers before I do," I replied, holding up my hand, and a gust of wind provided a tailwind for the Geocruise.
"What are you doing, Mike?" I turned around to see Gaia in spirit form, barely visible against the night sky.
"I have made it my mission to never let any creature suffer, and those poachers are going to pay," I said sternly.
"But this is not the way," Gaia expressed her concern. "I know seeing those foxes broke your heart, but you could lose everything if you go in guns blazing."
As the Geocruise approached the airport, I heard a siren and saw a poacher's truck trying to elude the cops.
With a sinister smile, I told Gaia that I would not harm the poachers and gave my AI BEATTI command over the Geocruiser. "But these poachers are not going anywhere," I said as I leaped out of the plane and landed a few yards ahead of them and the authorities.
My cloak billowed as the wind blew across the tarmac. "It is time for some basic physics," I said over the wind gust. Just as the pickup truck was about to pass me, I quickly raised my hand and grabbed the truck bed. As the bed came to a complete stop in my hands, I could hear the sound of metal being torn in half.
As the truck's cab separated from the bed, it continued to accelerate at over 100 miles per hour for a few feet before coming to a stop. The cab fell backward with only the front wheels supporting it, causing the occupants to fall onto the pavement. Police officers surrounded them quickly, guns drawn. "That is one way to end a chase," one of the officers chuckled.
I carefully lowered the pickup truck bed as gently as possible. I saw several caged animals, the majority of which appeared sick and terrified. Three black bears, four timber wolf pups, twelve fox kits, and nine beavers were present. Aside from the beavers, the other animals screamed in terror. I was furious and growled at the unnecessary cruelty.
When I returned my attention to the poachers, I saw that the authorities had already apprehended them. I approached them coldly and said, "Let your buddies know that the Guardian is watching." They appeared terrified and were quickly led away in handcuffs. "Thank you, we will take it from here," an officer said to me.
"I see what you are saying, officer. Just be cautious because some of them do not appear to be in good condition," I replied to his greeting. "Those individuals give hunters like me a bad reputation," the officer grumbled. "You are a hunter?" I asked, surprised. "Yes, and one of the principles of hunting is to protect the land," the officer replied.
"I appreciate your coming," I said as the Geocruiser arrived to pick me up. With the excitement of apprehending the poachers out of the way, I could finally concentrate on celebrating our victory over Count Mullock.
After finishing the task, I returned to the party feeling better but unsure whether I wanted to join in the fun. People were celebrating in that hall, and I was not in the mood to celebrate. I went through a door that led to the courtyard where the festivities were taking place to collect my thoughts. Gaia appeared before me and complimented my work, saying, "You did well, Mike Pennock." "Not bad for my first Eco-battle," I said, forcing a smile.
Gaia, on the other hand, reprimanded me gently, saying, "While your heart was in the right place, Mike, your temper was not." "I am sorry, Gaia," I said, apologizing for my actions. "I guess the foxes' deaths affected me." I even admitted it was still bothering me.
Gaia tried to console me, saying, "Well, anger is not all that bad, Mike. You just have to be careful how you handle it." "But hey, I saved those little guys, and we put one more group of lawbreakers away," I tried to console myself.
The door suddenly opened, and Brian appeared in the courtyard in front of us. "Mike?" he called out to me.
"Hey Bri," I said quietly.
"Dana told us about the poacher incident," Brian kissed my cheek.
"I apologize for running out on you," I said.
"This is your calling, Mike," Brian declared.
"Thanks. My heart just stopped when I heard the call and saw that fox kit," I explained.
"If anything, your heart went into overdrive," Brian said lovingly.
"I suppose you could say that," I said as I drew him into me, and he simply held me. As the floodgates opened and all my emotions spilled out, I desperately needed his love and support.
"I just do not understand how some people can be so fucking cruel," Brian says. The floodgate had been opened, and there was no turning back.
"I do not know how people can be so careless," I sobbed. Brian drew me in for a hug.
"Those creatures did nothing to deserve to be treated like that," Brian simply held me and let me vent in my own way.
"And now, because of their carelessness, one little fox will probably never be the same when he is released back into the wild," I cried.
"Mike, it is been a long time since even I have heard of someone so compassionate before," Brian said as he drew me away, kissing my cheek and wiping away my tears.
"God chose well," Brian said softly. "To be in this much pain demonstrates Gaia's faith in you." Brian kissed me once more. He was correct, and I could use this pain to my advantage. I turned to him and kissed him on the lips before returning to the party. It took some time, but I was finally able to relax. The music, the food, and the company were all I needed to lift my spirits. "So, where are you going next?" Jake asked Kevin.
Kevin replied, "Hawaii." "We are performing in Hilo."
"You should go," Dave said as he turned to face me.
"I am not sure, Dave. Really, I ought to stay here," I answered.
"I insist, Mike. Like everyone else, you have been under a lot of strain, so you deserve a break," Dave pushed.
"Before you leave, I want to see what that training with the X-Men gave you that I couldn't," Dave said in retrospect.
"Absolutely, Dave. We can get together in the morning," I said. Then I asked, "What time do we fly out?" turning to Kevin.
Kevin said, "We take off for our flight at noon."
I suggested, "Then, when I get home, I will pack and meet you in the morning, Dave."
"Do you believe there will be enough time?" Dave was concerned.
"While there will not be much time for a thorough demonstration, I can give you a quick rundown. We will schedule a time to really experiment once I return from Hawaii," I said, nodding.
"Nah, Mike. We will wait for you to return. As you have a long flight to Hawaii, I want you to be well-rested," said Dave.
I asked, "Are you sure?"
"Mike, it can wait. I know you are stronger than before. I want you to have fun," Dave insisted.
"We will go back to your house, love, and I will help you pack," Brian said with a smile.
I was not going to pass up any opportunity. I wanted to spend time with Brian. We were not going to get opportunities like this all the time, given their schedule and my responsibilities here.
"It is been a while since we were there," Jake admitted.
"I know, but I really believe Philadelphia needs me," I tried to steer the conversation away from the topic.
"You are leaving, Mike. Spend time with Brian, and the rest of you deserve it," Dave insisted.
Brian wrapped his arms around me and rested his head on my shoulder. "Come on, Love. We would be delighted to have you join us."
"Very well, I will go," I said, mock-huffing and accepting. Everyone erupted in applause.
The X-Men and Tela left as the night came to an end. Brian Littrell was exhausted, so I drove him home, and Kevin followed in a rented Jeep Cherokee. When we got close to our destination, Kevin had to return to their hotel, while Brian and I continued our journey home.
We began packing my belongings for my island vacation as soon as we arrived. I was just accompanying the Backstreet Boys to their concert. Brian made a few suggestions, but before we knew it, BEATTI informed us that Brian's security detail had returned to pick him up. We brought my belongings down to the living room and set them up for pick-up. We then exited the front door, where a car awaited us. After a quick kiss goodbye, I reminded him that we would meet at the airport.
"I know," Brian sighed. "I just hate saying goodbye."
"This isn't a goodbye. We both have responsibilities, and I have yet to show Dave any of my new abilities," I reminded him.
"Kevin would kill me if I was late, Mike, but that does not mean I have to put up with this," he retorted..
After giving Brian one more hug, I kissed him, which prompted Steve to honk the car's horn. "Brian, we really need to get you back to the hotel," Steve grumbled.
"Steve, keep your shirt on," Brian shot back. I am coming." Brian let go and they both got into the car and drove away. Even so, I could still hear someone say, "Sir, he is going to fly out with you." Then I heard Brian tell Steve, "That will be the last time you rush me, Steve." Since they were beyond my hearing range, I was unaware of what was said after that. I went back inside to take a shower before retiring to bed.
And this is where I end this chapter. Next stop Hawaii, I hope you all enjoy this as much I do writing it.
