THAT DAY

By ShyWriterBoy

Chapter 1 Have you ever had one of those days that just won't end? You know you can't speed up time and it just doesn't seem to be going by fast enough. That is how my day is going.

It all started, Tuesday morning. I get up at 6 AM and jump in a quick shower. Grab something to eat in my mad dash to get out the door and on the road. Fight rush hour traffic and pray to all that's holy that I make it to work by 7:30 AM.

Thankfully this morning I made it with 10 minutes to spare. The lobby of the ER was packed when I got there. I weaved my way past the Admitting desk and made my way to the employee lounge, all the while thinking, "If this many people are hurt, sick or dying at 7 am, this day is going to be a fucking blast."

Ok, wait. Maybe I should back up just a few steps and take this time to introduce myself. My name is Cody Walker. I'm 23 years old, and if you haven't already guessed, I work in the ER of probably the busiest hospital in the metro Dallas area. Thankfully though, I am not a Doctor or Nurse. I, in all my greatness, am a Phlebotomist. (For those of you who may not know what that is, I draw people's blood and take it to the lab for analysis). It's not the most glamorous job in the world but we can't all have fame and fortune like some in this world. All in all I like my job and the people I work with. They are hardworking, non-judgmental people that are fun to be around in and outside of the hospital. There are, however, a few that drive me completely bananas, and there is one in particular that takes "Neurotic" to a whole new level...Gina.

Gina is 32 year old hairdresser / beautician with the emotional stability of a 10 year old. Gina has more issues than a damn magazine, and she uses them to try and manipulate any situation she is in to her advantage. She is overweight, very insecure, and has clung to me for a very long time. You see, Gina and I have a past, not a romantic one, but we were good friends at one time in my life. But you can only, for so long, take someone trying to force themselves into your life when they don't belong. The thing is.I'm gay. I am perfectly fine with who I am, and at first it was all good with Gina, but boy did that change.

We became friends when I first started coming out and she accepted me and we became instantly inseparable. She was the only person who knew the deep secret of my life and I was glad to have the support. We spent every waking minute together because I could finally be myself with someone and not worry about having to hide. Well because of this she fell in love with me and it all went downhill from there.

Over time I grew to be more confident and sure of myself and I wanted to explore and meet boys. I tried to do it and still be friends with her but her jealousy was too much and the boys that were interested in me always went away because they did not want to deal with her. So finally one day I decided.ENOUGH!! I went to her house one night and told her that I wanted a break to build my own life without her in it. We were way too close and I needed some sort of separation. Did she like that??? HELL NO!! She got mean and ugly and turned the whole thing into this huge pity party. I heard nothing but "Why me", and, "You hate me don't you!" It did not matter how much I tried to explain it to her, she had closed me out. She then began threatening to out me to important people in my life, thinking that would stop me. Oh it didn't. That fueled my anger more and I stopped talking to her completely. We did not speak for almost 8 months.

I began to focus on my life and making it better. I had found a new job, was dating a few cute boys and rebuilding the part of me I lost dealing with Gina. I was happy and content until one day she showed up at the hospital dressed as a Candy Striper. She had found out where I worked and took it upon herself to become a volunteer, working with the terminally ill doing their hair and nails, giving them back some sense or normality. It was awkward at first but soon I began to ignore her and her advances and pathetic attempts to talk and work out all these issues between us. After awhile, I learned how to deal with her being there. One thing was for sure, I was not letting her back in, and no act of God was going to change that.

Alright, enough about my life, lets get back to that day.

I finally made it into the lounge and went in to start my day. I walked past all the pretentious and upscale lockers that are reserved for the Doctors and Surgeons that frequent the ER, and, at the back of the room, found my considerably smaller, flimsy little locker. What can I say, I'm the low man on the totem pole but hey, I make the best of what I'm given. I had just finished putting my stuff away and was ready to walk to the Nurses Station to find my first patient when I heard from behind me, "Good morning sexy boy."

Still facing my locker I rolled my eyes at the sound of that voice and thought, Great, what a way to start the day. I turned around, and with the biggest fake smile I could muster I said, "Good Morning Gina, don't you sound rather chipper today."

"I would be more chipper if you would just sit down with me and talk, we have been friends for sooooo long that I hate to see us go another day without each other," She whined.

"I'm not going to go through this with you again, Gina, and if you have seen the lobby out there, I have A LOT of work to do. So, you have a good day and maybe I'll see you later." She annoyed the hell out of me, but it was way too early to be mean and I still wasn't fully awake.

"Cody Thomas Walker," Like using my full name is going to make me listen, that only worked with my mother, "I'm tired of playing these games. I don't understand why you hate me so much that you won't even talk to me. All I want is for you to give me the chance to explain that."

Without hesitation I cut her off, "Good day Gina, this discussion is over!"

With that I closed my locker and left the lounge.

I walked down the hall, turned left and headed to the Nurse's Station. This was not the way that I wanted to start my day. Gina always had a habit of putting a very negative undertone to any situation and I refused to let that happen to my day. I could already tell that this day is going to be long and if I let it continue on a negative note, it was going to be excruciating. So I took a few deep breaths and headed in to start my day.

As I got closer to the Nurses Station, I could already see that my favorite nurse Sylvia was on duty, and she smiled as she noticed me coming down the hall. That was at least one good thing for this day.

I loved Sylvia to death. I could talk to her about anything and I considered her one of my best friends here at the hospital. She was like a second mother to me and we had a lot in common. She has an older gay son with a partner and child, but she regarded me as her younger adopted son. She had already been through it all with him, so I knew I could go to her with anything. Boyfriend problems, to tell her about my last date, or to share the most intimate parts of my life. She always had an open mind and gave me great advice when she knew I needed it.

"Hey Cody, how are you my baby-boy?" She said with a smile.

"Good Sylvia. How are you doing this morning?"

"Oh I couldn't complain till I walked in here this morning," she said, motioning to the lobby. "When I saw this, I had plenty to complain about."

I nodded to her in agreement and turned to survey the packed lobby. There were probably 20-30 people sprawled out in ever corner. I did not understand why this place was packed so early. With a puzzled look I turned back to Sylvia and ask, "What's with this place anyway? We usually aren't this busy till bout lunchtime."

"A member of some boy band fainted during a rehearsal for their concert here in Dallas on Thursday." She said shaking her head. "They rushed him in here and demanded we see him immediately. They have been here since 6:30 and the people who got bumped back are still waiting and new ones just keep piling up. Thank god no one waiting is critical or we would be drowning with the skeleton crew we have at this time of the morning."

"Well this is just going to make for a lovely day. I already had a run in with Gina this morning," I said with a sigh as Sylvia grimaced, "So dealing with grumpy sick people is just going to be icing on the cake."

With a forced laugh, I turned to the waiting charts, "So which one do I get to deal with first?"

"Actually," Sylvia said handing me a chart, "You don't get to play with any of our waiting guests. It seems as if our boy band member needs some tests done so you get to draw blood on him."

"How did I get so lucky?" I said sarcastically.

"Well you need to take this seriously," she said. "This is to remain Top Secret. Obviously this man is protected by Doctor/Patient Confidentiality, but when you leave here today, nothing about what you do or say with him can be mentioned to anyone."

"I understand Sylvia. You know you can trust me."

"I know baby-boy," she said wrapping her arm around me. "I just have to please the big wigs and give you the complimentary lecture. They are down in Exam room 4. Make sure you flash your hospital ID to their guard sitting at the door, that way they will let you in. If you need any help just call me here at the desk."

"Will do, and thanks for the lecture.MOM!!" I said laughing.

"Ill show you mom," she said, spinning me around and smacking me on the backside. "NOW GO!"

I was laughing as I walked down to Exam Room 4. I was looking through the chart and thinking to myself, Boy Band member huh? This would be the first time I have ever drawn blood on anyone famous, let alone a Boy Band member.

I really did not get into the Boy Band scene, I know shocking huh, I'm gay and not into Boy Bands. I will admit that some of their music is catchy, but there are so many of them I cannot keep them straight. Between Backstreet-Town, O'Sync and N-Boys they all get confusing. One thing is for sure; I cannot go into that exam room like some star crazed teenager and, seeing how I can't keep them all straight, that won't be a problem. I will be cool, calm, collected and 100% professional.

I rounded the corner to Exam Room 4 and saw a HUGE black man sitting in front of the door. What else I saw, just about put me through the roof. Gina was there and she almost arguing with this man to let her into the room. She knew someone famous was in that room and it was killing her that she was not able to get in to see who it was. Thank God volunteers were not issued hospital ID cards, because, let's face it, they do a wonderful service to the patients, but don't really have a need to access the private sectors of the hospital.

As I came closer to where they were I heard Gina say rather pointedly, "Look I am a hospital employee and I demand to be let into that room."

The bodyguard just stared at her with a blank face, and an amazing level of control. Without blinking an eye, he said, "Look lady, without a valid hospital ID I am not permitted to let you into this room. If there is a problem I suggest you take it up with your superior."

Gina saw me as I approached and her eyes immediately lit up. I thought to myself, if she thinks that I'm going to try and persuade him to let her in there she is sadly mistaken.

Stopping right next to Gina I ask, "What seems to be the problem here?"

With a pathetically frazzled look, Gina grabbed my arm and practically pleaded, "Cody, I'm so glad you're here. Could you please explain to this gentleman that as a hospital employee, I am to have access to this room!"

"Gina," I said calmly, "You know you're not a hospital employee, you're just a volunteer. You don't have a valid ID. So, without one of these, "I said, flashing my ID card, "You have no business in this room. Now run along and take care of the patients that are in need of a manicure, pedicure or whatever the hell it is you do"

Gina just stared at me in shock. Ok, I will admit that that wasn't the nicest thing to say, but I had already had enough of her for one day.

Obviously angry, Gina stormed down the hall in a huff. I knew I was going to pay for that one later, but at that moment, I really didn't care.

I turned to the bodyguard, "I apologize for that. She gets a little over zealous sometimes. My name is Cody and I am here to draw." I opened the chart searching for a name. Locating it I continued, ".Josh's blood for some tests."

"My name is Lonni," he said, shaking my hand, "It's nice to meet you. Mr. Chasez is waiting patiently in there for something to happen. I will warn you though; he is very skittish in hospitals, so you have your work cut out for you"

"Oh believe me, I have gone the rounds with the best of them. I'm sure I'll be able to handle Mr. Chasez just fine." I replied with a chuckle.

I turned to face the Exam Room door and took in a deep breath. Time to put on the game face and go do what I do best, charm the hell out of someone enough to let me stick a metal needle in their arm and draw out their blood. Sometimes it was easy, but other times it made giving birth look easy.

I opened the door and there he was sleeping peacefully on the bed. Laying there motionless I have to admit, he was quite a site to behold. I never was a fanatic over the whole boy band craze, but some of the members were quite cute. This one was no exception. His beautiful brown hair flowed across neck and face. He was wearing a tight white T-Shirt which left nothing to the imagination as to how toned and tight his body was. He was wearing a pair of shorts and his beautiful legs sprawled motionless before him giving way to the most beautiful bare feet I have seen. Ok, I have a thing for a barefoot man. Feet, as long as they are well taken care of, are so very sexy, so the sight of him lying there barefoot and peaceful nearly took my breath away.

I could have stayed watching him forever, and I hated to interrupt his sleep, but I had to. I softly closed the door behind me and began walking towards the side of the bed. The sound of the door closing awoke him and he looked at me startled and wide eyed.

Sensing his nervousness, I smiled brightly. "Hi there, I apologize for waking you. My name is Cody and I am here to draw your blood for some tests that your doctors want to run."

Still quite nervous he took a deep breath and said, "Nice to meet you, my name is Josh," he said turning his focus to me. Forcing a smile he extended his hand.

I politely shook it, "It's nice to meet you too."

"I have to tell you, needles freak me out beyond belief so you'll have to be patient with me." He said with a look of worry.

The amount of fear/nerves/worry I saw in his eyes told me he was totally serious, so I tried not to look in them as much as I could. Not only because I could easily start to sympathize and feel guilty for having to use a needle, which I could not afford to do, but he had those eyes that could melt an iceberg and that you could lose yourself in.

Snapping out of my trace I smiled, "Don't worry Josh, your in very capable hands. Now if I could have you lie flat on your back with your right arm straight out for me."

He did as I ask and I heard him mumble under his breath, "Ok I can do this."

I smiled at the adorable way he reassured himself as I opened my kit and took out the tourniquet and tied it around his upper arm. "Pump your fist like this for me please." I ask as I demonstrated the motions.

As he did this I gently put my fingers on his arm and marveled at the feel of his skin, so soft. Very carefully I tapped on the crook of his elbow and found a very nice vein. Taking out an alcohol swab, I opened it and prepped the area for the needle.

Reaching into my kit again I prepared the needle and syringe and located the vile for the blood. Turning back to Josh I said, "It may be best if you don't watch me do this."

With that he turned his head to the left and as I prepared to insert the needle in his arm I decided to try a tactic that usually worked with nervous patients. I would get him talking about himself and his life and then when I was comfortable that they weren't focusing on what was about to happen I would insert the needle and draw out the needed blood. It usually worked very slick and it was over before they knew it. Boy was I wrong.

"So Josh, tell me bout what you do for a living," I began as I lowered the needle to his arm.

"Well I'm a singer and a musician. I am a member of the popular boy band N'Sync." It was at that time that I inserted the needle in his arm and with a loud "OUCH", his arm shot straight up and his clenched fist connected with my chin.

In an instant, everything around me got very light and fluffy and I fell to the ground. Half in and out of consciousness I see him lean over the side of the bed and yell "Oh Shit.LANCE!!!"

As my eyes began to close and my body gave way to unconsciousness I remember thinking, "Lance?? My name is Cody, what is he talking about?"

With that I lost the battle, my eyes closed, and everything went black.
