"Oh." (With all of these things going on, I haven't paid attention to the fact that my brother is gay. It's cool and all, but am I the only one that didn't pick up on it? Does mom or dad know?)
"You lost TJ."
"Sorry, I was thinking."
"Did it hurt? I know it hurts your brother."
"Funny. If any person gets hurt, it would have to be you, baby." JC
"Hey babe. I didn't really mean it." Kyle
"Too late. Darryl wants to talk to you now." JC
Chapter 10: One on One
Kyle walked into the bedroom leaving Josh and Tyler in the living room.
"So what did you guys talk about in there?"
"I can't really tell you, TJ. I think this is between him and me."
"Oh." (I'm becoming the fourth wheel. Is that even possible? I thought it stopped at three.)
"I'm sorry. He will tell you soon."
"How do you know?"
"I don't know, but I think he trusts you."
"Does he really? I just need to ask one question though."
"What?"
"He didn't like you in the beginning. We both figured that out."
"True."
"Why did he open up to you first? He even talked to you before Kyle. That has to mean something."
"Oh. Like I said, Darryl will tell you. It's his business, not mine."
"How come I feel like you are lying to me?"
"You can think whatever you want, but wait for Darryl to explain it first."
"Fine!"
"You don't sound happy."
"I'm not. I'm always left in the dark. You are keeping something from me, but you won't admit."
"Even if I was, which I am not, how would you know?"
"You just have this look when you are hiding things from us."
"Then why didn't you notice that I was keeping my sexuality from you guys?!"
"You're going to hit me there."
"Yes I am."
Kyle sat down next to Darryl. Darryl had been staring outside waiting for Kyle to come in.
"What did you want?"
"First I want to apologize. I shouldn't have pissed you off. It wasn't right on my behalf."
"I accept your apology and too would like to apologize for getting mad."
"We sure sound sophisticated."
"We do, don't we? Something is wrong here. Aren't we supposed to have the vocabulary of cave men?"
"Yeppers." [Darryl has a huge smile with his response]
(He is smiling. Now to see if I can open him up a little.) "Is there anything else?"
"Yes there is. I wanted to tell you that I'm ok. I think I have passed through this whole rape thing."
"Have you really?"
"Not really, but I can't admit defeat just yet."
"Yes you can. I will be there to help you."
"How? You don't know anything about being raped. The feeling, the humiliation, nothing."
"That's pretty harsh don't you think."
"No, it's not. You keep telling me to open up. You keep telling me to let it all out. You keep telling me to tell you what is wrong. You keep telling me to talk about it. All you do is tell me what to do. You don't know what it is like. You don't know the feeling. You don't know anything."
"Aren't we being pretty repetitive? You've already said some of that stuff already."
"Don't get sarcastic on me. You just don't understand."
"Let me understand then."
"I can't."
"Why not?"
"I'm afraid."
"Afraid of what?"
"Afraid of you."
"ME?! How? Why? I'm your friend." (How could he be afraid of me? What did I ever do to him? I've always been supportive, right?)
"I can't say."
"You have to."
"No I don't. Not this time."
"Then nobody is leaving this room until something happens."
Josh and Tyler sat there staring at each other. Tyler couldn't believe that Josh would ever use that against him. This pushed Tyler farther back on his problem. How could he talk to Josh now? Or was it his fault that this came out? He shouldn't have pushed Josh.
Josh on the other hand was too mad to talk to Tyler. Tyler always pushed him to far. He always had to get his own way. He regretted to say that to his brother, but he asked for it.
The silence was finally interrupted by Josh's cell phone.
"Hello." JC
"Hey JC." Lance
"Hi Lance. Did you want something?" JC
"Yeah. Did you guys find Darryl?" Lance
"Yeah." JC
"That's good. Where was he?" JC
"What does Lance want?" Tyler
"Not right now." JC
"Sorry for me for asking." Tyler
"Are you talking to me, JC?" Lance
"No. I was talking to TJ." JC
"TJ's there. I guess I should come over." Lance
"I don't think that would be a good idea." JC
"Why is that?" Lance
"When we found Darryl, he had kinda been raped." JC
"Raped? Oh my god. Is he ok?" Lance
"I think so." JC
"Are you sure you don't need me?" Lance
"Not right now. Don't tell anybody though. We have to keep this stuff between us." JC
"Ok. Keep in touch." Lance
"Bye." JC
"Are you going to talk to me now, or do I have to remain quiet again?" Tyler
"Right now, remain quiet." JC
"Fine."
And again the two brothers continued to stare at each other in complete silence.
Lance was shocked by the news he had just received. He couldn't believe that Darryl had been raped. Is that even possible? Lance stopped thinking about. He would help if they needed him, but right now they didn't. Time to take care of some business. He picked up his telephone and dialed a number.
"Hello."
"Hi"
"Lance?"
"Here in a flash."
"It's been a long time. What do you want?"
"You."
"Me? Why me?"
"I missed you."
"You missed me. You're the one that dumped me."
"I know. I was too blind to see that we had something good."
"What if I told you that I have moved on?"
"I wouldn't believe you."
"Why is that?"
"Because I love, and I'm not going to let you go again."
"You're not? How do I know you're not going to dump me again?"
"I love you too much to hurt you again. I know I was wrong last time. I miss you too much."
"I guess I can give this another try."
"Will you?"
"I will. When are we going to see each other?"
"I got you a ticket to come down here. I was wondering if you would like to come."
"When is that?"
"Today."
"Today? You were pretty confident that I would say yes."
"I guess I have that luck."
"Ok. Let me pack and I'll be there."
"Ok. The ticket will be waiting for you at the airport. It leaves at five."
"Alright. I'll see you later, Lance."
"Can't wait baby."
Tyler couldn't stand the silence anymore. He turned on the television to ESPN.
"I can't believe you rather watch television than solve this problem."
"Remember I am suppose to stay quiet."
"Why do you listen to me when I don't want you to."
"Because I'm your little brother."
"I know. Your so difficult sometimes."
"I can't help it. It's not fun being left in the dark."
"I know, but you can't push other people's button to get your own way."
"I can't help it."
"You are going to have to. Brother to brother, you are just going to have to wait. You know I wouldn't do anything to hurt you."
"I know."
"Are we cool now?"
"Not yet."
Not yet?"
"I can't believe you said those things earlier about me not noticing you sexuality."
"I'm sorry. You just made me mad. You kept saying you knew me and when I lie, but how come you couldn't pick up on that?"
"Probably for the same reason you didn't pick it up."
"Pick it up? I'm the one that is gay."
"Looks like you don't know me very well either."
"What do you mean? Oh. You're gay too."
"Yeah."
"Does anybody else know?"
"No. You're the first person to know."
"Wow. Are you going to tell anybody else?"
"I want to, but I'm afraid to how they would react."
"I know the feeling. Anyone particular though?"
"Besides mom and dad, there is somebody."
"Why don't you tell that person then? Maybe he or she will accept you."
"I can't because I like him."
"Him? Does my little brother have a crush on somebody?"
"Yes he does."
"Who is it?"
Kyle and Darryl sat there. Not a single word had been exchanged between them. Kyle was frustrated with Darryl's action, and Darryl just didn't want to talk. Maybe he shouldn't have come back. It would have been a lot easier on the both of them if they were in separate states. But again he had to come back. The rapist was going to attack somebody that was close to him, but Josh knows now. He can do all the protecting now.
"Talk now!"
"I think I should leave now, Kyle."
"Why do you keep leaving when I am trying to talk to you?"
"I don't know."
"What are you so afraid of?"
"I'm not afraid."
"Then what are you?"
"I don't want to tell you."
"Why?"
"I'm afraid you are going to think less of me."
"I would never do that. You're one of my friends; you're practically a brother to me."
"I know."
"Then tell me."
"I can't."
"Is this what is stopping you from talking about the rape with me?"
"Sorta."
"Please tell me."
"It's going to change our friendship."
"I am pretty sure for the best."
"Probably not."
"Just spit it out already."
"I think I am falling in love with you." (I hope this works.)
"WHAT!"
Josh and Tyler heard Kyle yell that one word.
"What the hell is going on in there, Josh?"
"I have no clue, but I don't think it is good. Let's go."
Josh and Tyler ran into the room. Darryl silently wept in the corner. Kyle stood there with only an expression of shock on his face. He couldn't believe what he had heard. Did their relationship move onto that course, and he had been too blind to see it? It was not right. He was going out with Josh.
"What's going on here, Kyle?" Josh
Kyle was still in thought. He had not heard a single word that came out of Josh's mouth.
"Earth to Kyle. Do you copy? Why is Darryl crying? What did you do? Are you dead?" Tyler
"No time for jokes, TJ." JC
"Fine. Fine."
Tyler walked to corner to see how Darryl was doing.
"Are you ok?" (Why was he crying?)
"Yeah I'll be better."
"What happened?"
"You can tell me. I promise I won't say a word."
"I told Kyle something that I shouldn't have."
"What was it?"
"I told him that… I can't."
"Sure you can. It will make you feel better."
"I told him that I was falling for him."
"You're what?" (He's falling in love with Kyle. There goes my chance.)
"I knew I shouldn't have told you." (What have I just done? I am so confused. Why did I have to say that to Kyle? Why did I have to tell Tyler? I can see the pain in his eyes. Why?)
"I think Josh should know that he has some competition."
"What competition?" JC
"It's nothing bro." Tyler
"It's something." JC
"Darryl just told me he liked me." Kyle
"He did WHAT!" JC
"I'm sorry." Darryl
"There is nothing to be sorry about. You have feelings for me, but I can't be with you. I'm with Josh, but I will still be your friend." Kyle
"The hell you will be." JC
"I think I should go now. I've done enough." Darryl
"That enough running away from you. Stay put." Tyler
Darryl had expected Kyle to say that, maybe even Josh, but not Tyler. What had gotten into him? Darryl turned around and looked at Tyler. He was sad, but mixed with anger. Why? Darryl had feelings for Tyler too, but he knew they couldn't be returned. The guy was straight.
"Why not?" Darryl
"It's my turn to talk to you in private." Tyler
"I'm not done yet." Kyle
"I don't give a care anymore. So everyone out." Tyler
Everybody including Darryl started to walk out of the room.
"Not you."
"What do you want?"
"Why did you pull that crap back there?"
"What do you mean?"
"Telling Kyle you love him. I was hurt for a second, but then I realized it."
"Why would you be hurt? And what did you realize?"
"You can't be falling in love with him. You love Deanna. You've known Deanna longer than Kyle. You knew Kyle for three years, while you were dating Deanna, and suddenly you fall in love with him. What the fuck is all this drama you are pulling."
"I'm not pulling anything."
"That's BS."
"Speaking of BS, you never answered my question."
"You want to know why I was hurt. I'm sincere. I don't play with other feelings. You knew that Kyle wouldn't choose you. You knew he truly loves Josh. I'll tell you why I was hurt. I'm felt something for you. I'm not sure anymore."
"You felt something for me?" (He's not straight? I thought he was.)
"I did, but this stunt I'm not too sure about. There is nothing I can do anyways. You love Deanna."
Tyler walked out of the room. Kyle and Josh had eavesdropped on the entire conversation. Luckily they moved out of the way. So this was the person that Tyler was afraid to tell. Josh felt sorry for Tyler. He knew this wasn't the way Tyler wanted to tell Darryl.
"I'm going to go. I'll talk to you later, Josh."
"See ya, Tyler. Call me when you get home."
"Will do."
Kyle walked back into the room. Darryl had started to cry again.
"I heard everything. Why did you make up that lie?"
"I wanted to get you off my back."
"I see. You hurt Tyler pretty bad."
"I know."
"Why are you crying?"
"Because I liked him too."
"Guess it is too late right now. Maybe next time. You ready to talk."
"I guess."
Darryl spent about an hour talking about what was going on in his head. Josh had joined them in the conversation. He had nothing better to do, but he knew he had to be there to help Darryl out. He could have stopped it. Darryl spent a lot of time crying, but one thing that wasn't told was what was going to happen next. It had become a secret between Darryl and Josh.
