The Abandoned Boy
Chapter 16
I dove for the bedroom door and shut it quickly. I was just in time, as I heard the boys stop in front of it.
"Are you OK Greg?" Simon asked, puzzled.
"Yeah," I said, "I'll be out in a minute."
"K, we'll be in my room," Simon said.
The boys' voices continued on down the hallway then, and I heard Simon's door close.
"Phew! That was too close!" Tom said.
"I know," I said.
We quickly dressed. Then I peered out into the hallway. The coast was clear, so Tom made a dash for the front door and left.
The following weekend, I asked Tom and the boys if they wanted to go see a movie. Simon wanted to go. Ethan wanted to as well, but bowed out at the last minute, as he had a term paper he had to finish. Tom was busy. So, Simon and I went without them.
Ethan's mother was at work, and Ethan was home alone. He decided to take a break from working on his paper to get himself a sandwich. While he was in the kitchen making his sandwich, the phone rang suddenly, startling him, just as he was cutting a slice of bread. The knife was sharp, and it slipped, slicing deeply into Ethan's left index finger. He dropped the knife and grabbed a towel and wrapped it around his finger. Even though he applied pressure, the cut was big, and kept on bleeding, soaking the towel.
Ethan tried to call his mother at work, but she had gone off to a seminar somewhere, and nobody could find her. She apparently had her cell phone off, as she didn't answer that. He tried my cell phone, but we were in the movies and I had it off. Frantically, he called the only other person he could think of. Tom. Luckily, Tom answered the phone. Ethan told him what had happened, and Tom told him to keep the direct pressure on it, that he'd be right over to take him to the ER.
Tom raced over to the Rodman's. He made Ethan open the towel up and show him his finger.
"Shit!" Tom said, when he saw it beginning to bleed profusely again. Ethan looked very pale and a little sweaty, like he was going to pass out. Tom grabbed a clean towel and wrapped it around Ethan's finger and hand and told Ethan to hold onto it. Then he drove Ethan to the hospital.
At the ER, they asked Tom his relationship to Ethan. Tom told him he was just a friend. They said they'd have to wait until they could find Ethan's mother, as either a parent, guardian, or someone with express permission had to sign the papers to have him examined. They tried to find Carol, but couldn't. Then it dawned on Tom. He was the high school principal, and had permission to sign for the students, assuming their parents had sent in permission slips to the school. Ethan said his mother had, so Tom left Ethan in the waiting room, and drove to the school, which was luckily nearby. He looked through the nurse's files and found Ethan's slip, copied it, and drove quickly back to the hospital. After he showed it to the nurse, along with his school ID, she let Tom sign Ethan's paperwork, and the two of them were ushered into a treatment room.
Eventually, a doctor looked at Ethan, and determined he needed several stitches. He sewed him up, put a splint under his finger to hold it still, and wrapped a lot of gauze around his finger, the splint, and his whole hand, making it look like he had a much worse injury than he really had. He also, gave him a prescription for tylenol with codeine for the pain. He told Ethan to see his family doctor in a week to have the stitches out, and have his hand re-examined. Then the doctor told him something that scared him to death.
"I can't tell how much internal or nerve damage may have been done at this point, as the finger is swollen. It was a very deep cut though, and although you can move your finger somewhat, you might have severed a nerve, or done some other damage. I'm sorry son, but there's a possibility you may not regain 100% use of your finger." the doctor said.
Ethan went completely numb then, and just stared dumbly at the doctor.
"You'll still be able to do most everything you've always been able to do. It's not something you should worry about unneccesarily. Unless of course you use your fingers for detailed movement," The doctor said.
Tears began to well up in Ethan's eyes, as the doctor looked at him blankly.
"He's a concert pianist!" Tom said, as he felt his own eyes burning.
"Oh dear!" the doctor said. "Well! Wait and see. I'm sure things will work out OK."
Then he patted Ethan on the arm and left.
Ethan looked at Tom.
"It'll be fine!" Tom said. "Come on."
Tom led Ethan out to his car then. They rode silently back toward Ethan's house, stopping along the way at the pharmacy Ethan said they used, and had his prescription filled.
Carol wasn't home yet when they got there, so Tom decided to stay with Ethan until she came home. When they walked into the house, Ethan stopped in the doorway to the living room and stood still, staring at his piano. Tom could see tears forming in his eyes, and walked over and wrapped an arm around him. Slowly, Ethan turned to Tom and buried his face against Tom's chest and burst into tears. Tom wrapped his other arm around Ethan and held him as he wept. He rubbed one hand up and down Ethan's back and talked softly to him, trying to calm him down and soothe him.
Finally Ethan broke away from Tom and hollered, "You don't get it! It's OVER! I'll never be able to play again! I won't get into Juliard! I won't get the music scholarship I hoped to get! My life is over!"
Ethan broke down and began sobbing again. All Tom could do was take him in his arms and hold him, until he cried himself out.
Eventually Ethan did stop crying. When he did, Tom was surprised to feel Ethan wrap his arms around him and hug him.
"Thank you for everything you've done for me today," Ethan said, sniffling. "I'm sorry I'm being such a baby about this."
"It's OK Ethan, I understand," Tom said.
"Do you? I know you care, but I really don't see how you could understand something like this. Did you lose the use of part of your body?" Ethan asked.
"Well, no. I just meant, I can understood that you must feel devastated." Tom said.
"Yeah! Pretty much!" Ethan said. "Everything I ever wanted is gone!"
"We don't know that for sure Ethan! You have to wait and see how well you heal up. And maybe there really wasn't any internal damage!" Tom said.
"Yeah right! Nothing ever goes right in my life! Or if it does, it never lasts! My Dad died. Then I figure out I'm gay! Now this! Things always seem to start out OK, or even good, then something happens and everything turns to shit!" Ethan said.
"I'm sorry some things have gone bad for you, but this time it might turn out OK," Tom said. "You need to wait and see, and have faith your hand'll be alright!"
Ethan just looked at Tom sadly. Tom put his arm around Ethan and gave him a hug.
"I truly believe it'll turn out OK!" Tom said.
"Nothing I can do about it if it doesn't," Ethan said ruefully.
"Well, until you're told for sure there's a problem, you need to believe that there isn't one!" Tom said. "So set aside the doom and gloom for now, and focus on what's at hand. You never got to eat, did you?"
"No! I'm not really hungry though," Ethan said.
"Nonsense! I'm going to fix you that sandwich you were making," Tom said.
"Whatever," Ethan said. "Make something for yourself too."
Tom headed for the kitchen then, while Ethan went to the bathroom. A couple minutes later, Ethan appeared in the kitchen doorway. Again he had tears in his eyes.
"What's wrong?" Tom asked, looking up at him.
"I can't even take a leak by myself! I can't get my dick out! My fly is all buttons!" Ethan said, holding up his bandaged hand, looking miserably at Tom.
Tom smiled and started to snicker, but stopped quickly, when Ethan looked even more upset.
"I'm sorry. I know it's not funny. Come on, I'll help you with your fly. Maybe we can find you something easier to get in and out of for you to wear for a couple days. After that you can probably get back into zipper fly pants. You really won't need all that gauze all the time, and that should free you up a lot." Tom said.
He followed Ethan to his room and they found a pair of sweat pants, then they went into the bathroom.
Tom hesitated for a moment, looking at Ethan's fly.
"OK, I'm gonna unbutton your pants," Tom said.
"Good, hurry up, I gotta pee!" Ethan said.
Tom started unbuttoning the buttons. As he opened the last couple, he could feel the soft firmness of Ethan's genitals bulging beneath the fabric. He felt his own cock begin to stir.
"Just get them them off me!" Ethan said, when his fly was completely unbuttoned.
"Well, let me get your sneakers off first," Tom said, kneeling on one knee and untying Ethan's sneakers.
Ethan kicked the shoes off, and asked Tom to pull his socks off too, which Tom did.
"OK, now get me out of these pants before I piss them," He said.
Tom pulled Ethan's pants down and helped him step out of them. Ethan was standing in front of him with just his boxers and a T-shirt on now. Without a hint of embarrassment, and and without asking Tom to leave, Ethan urgently stepped in front of the toilet, raised the seat, then hooking the waistband of his boxers with the tip of his left thumb, he pulled them down exposing himself fully. Quickly he took his genitals in his hand, wrapping his index finger and thumb around the base of his penis, letting his other three fingers cradle his scrotum. A second or two later, he released a thick forceful stream of urine into the toilet.
"Aaahhh!" Ethan said, quietly smiling to himself, "Much better!"
The moment Ethan exposed himself, Tom's eyes locked onto his crotch. They remained glued to Ethan's penis, as he began urinating. A couple seconds later, he snapped to, realizing he was staring at the boy's genitals. Not wanting Ethan to catch him staring at him like that, he quickly busied himself picking up the Ethan's pants, socks, and sneakers.
"Could you just throw the sock and pants in the hamper behind me please?" Ethan said, as he continued pissing like a race horse.
As Tom put Ethan's clothes in the hamper, Ethan's stream of piss finally stopped flowing. He flexed his crotch muscles a couple times and squirted two or three more littler squirts of pee into the toilet, then he massaged his dick a couple times and shook it a couple times, flicking a couple last drops into the toilet.
When he finally pulled his boxers back up, he noticed Tom had been watching him finish up. He smiled shyly and turning a little pink he said, "Gotta make sure you get it all out you know!"
"Yeah, I know the feeling!" Tom said, smiling and turning pink himself. "Here's your sweats."
Ethan managed to get the pants on over his feet, but as he was about to bend down to use both hands to pull them up, Tom quickly bent and grabbed the waistband and pulled them up for him.
"Thanks!" Ethan said, smiling.
"Sure!" Tom said. "Now, let's go get some lunch!"
The two of them went out to the kitchen then.
Tom made sandwiches and heated up a can of soup to go with them, then he and Ethan sat down and ate. Ethan was able to feed himself alright with one hand.
As they were eating, Ethan suddenly cringed and said "AW SHIT!"
"What's the matter?" Tom asked.
"I still have to finish my term paper! It's gonna take forever to type it with one hand!" Ethan said.
Tom snickered and said, "You dictate and I'll type!"
"NO!" Ethan said, "I didn't mean it that way. You have to go. You have your own things to do. I can handle it!"
"Absolutely not! You'll dictate and I'll type!" Tom said.
The rest of their lunch they bickered over whether Tom was staying and helping Ethan with his term paper or not. In the end, Ethan finally gave in, and agreed. Tom grinned at him victoriously. Ethan smiled, but still felt guilty.
After Tom picked up, with Ethan's help, the two of them went to Ethan's bedroom, where Ethan had been working on his term paper. Tom hadn't seen Ethan's room before, except when Ethan was getting his sweat pants earlier, so he spent a few minutes looking around the room at Ethan's things.
There's an almost intimate feeling you get when a boy allows you to look at all of his most personal possessions. It's as if he's allowing you to enter his brain and observe his innermost thoughts and feelings. Ethan smiled, as he watched Tom, who was taking his time looking around, inspecting everything. It gave Tom a very warm feeling when he realized Ethan was comfortable under such scrutiny, although he himself was a little embarrassed to be caught scrutinizing the boy so thoroughly.
"Sorry!" Tom said, a little sheepishly. "Didn't mean to seem like I was searching your room. You've got some nice things."
"It's OK," Ethan said. "Look all you want!"
Tom grinned, as he glanced around the room yet. Suddenly he spied a collage of pictures in a frame on the wall, that he hadn't seen yet. It was a bunch of pictures of Ethan, Simon, me, and Tom, that we'd taken over the few weeks we'd all known each other.
"Wow!" Tom said, stepping over to it. "I didn't realize we had taken so many pictures together!"
"Yeah! We've had a bunch of good times already!" Ethan said.
"I really like this one of me and you," Tom said, as he looked at one of the two of them, I'd taken at Thanksgiving.
Ethan blushed a little and said, "that's one of my favorites too."
Tom grinned then and said, "Well, you have a great room, and a lot of nice things. I suppose we'd better get this paper done though!"
Tom spent the rest of the day with Ethan, helping him finish and type up his term paper. The paper was great, and would earn Ethan a "A+" when it was graded later the next week. The two finished working on it just as Mrs. Rodman got home.
Upon hearing about Ethan's accident, she became very concerned, especially when Ethan tearfully related what the doctor had said about possible nerve damage. She took Ethan in her arms and cried along with him for a couple minutes, as Tom sat by watching. Carol rallied quickly though and told Ethan she was sure he'd be fine, that doctor's always warn you about the worst possible case, just in case it happens. She felt certain he'd be fine.
Carol felt very guilty that Tom had had to come to Ethan's rescue. And, she felt awful that she hadn't been there for Ethan too. She checked her cell phone and discovered the battery had lost its charge, and that's why nobody had been able to reach her. She thanked Tom over and over for all his help, and insisted that he stay for supper, which he did. The three had a very enjoyable meal together, and even watched a movie together afterward.
A couple nights later, Ethan and Tom were over for supper. We had Spaghetti, and along with it, a nice bottle of Chianti, which we allowed the boys to have a glass of as we ate. As we were eating, Ethan surprised us by saying, "So Tom, what do you think of my Mom?"...
