Chapter 5: Forgiveness?

I didn't see much of Max over the next few days. I knew deep down that he was truly sorry for what happened, but I just wasn't ready to forgive him.

One Saturday morning my brother Mike walks into my room and announces that I have a visitor. My heart swelled thinking Max came to tell me that he loved me. I was surprised to see Jake one of my ex team mates standing at my doorway. I tried to hide my disappointment but obviously not very well.

"Hey TJ, I know I'm the last person you wanted to see right now, but I really must talk to you!"

"Why is that Jake?! Did McGregor send you?!" I sneered.

"What?!... No!... I came on my own, t-to a-apologize!"

"What are you apologizing for Jake?"

"B-because I wasn't fast enough!"

"Fast enough for what Jake?! That you weren't quick enough to get a poke at the fag?!"

"No, because I couldn't find him quick enough!"

"What do you mean find HIM? HIM, whom?"

"Max!... I wasn't able to find Max faster!"

"What the hell are you talking about Jake?!"

"I was the one to go and get Max!"

"But why? Why did you want to help a fag?!"

"W-well... I-I l-like you TJ!"

Jake blushed.

"Hold on!... Back up!... What?!"

"I-I'm g-gay TJ!"

He stared at the floor.

"What your GAY?!"

"Yeah!"

"B-but the t-team,... they k-kicked me off the team, because I'm gay!"

"I know! Most of the team didn't really care, but James and Sean threatened everyone!"

"Bastards!!!... So what does Max have to do with this? Why wasn't he there?"

"Well, a few weeks after you two had your fight Max quit the team. I think he really felt bad for what he did!"

"Oh?! So he does care?!"

I asked more to myself than to Jake.

"Well... yeah! That's why he came running after I told him what they were doing!"

"OH!"

"T-TJ... can I-I ask y-you s-something?"

Jake was still looking at the floor.

"Sure Jake. After all I owe you!"

"W-well out me go? I m-mean w-will y-you g-go out with m-me?"

"Umm, Jake... I- I d-don't think that's such a good i-idea right now!"

"Oh!... Ok, see yah later then!"

He walked sadly out the door.

"JAKE WAIT!"

"Yeah?"

He still did not turn around.

"I-I... w-will think about it... OK!"

I tried not to hurt his feelings knowing it will never work out as long as I'm still in love with Max.

Jake left a few minutes later, leaving me with even more to figure out.

What was I going to do? I have been in love with Max for as long as I can remember.

Now Jake walks in and asks me out. Can this get any more complicated?!

I knew now that I would have to talk to Max sooner rather than later. What do I say?

I longed for someone to help me with this! Mom was out of the question! I wish dad were still here! The only one left was Mike, but that would just be weird!

I had to talk to Max and really soon!

Monday came all too quickly and I still hadn't decided what to say to Max!

I had already forgiven him, as I knew I would. What could I do about my love for him?

As I was walking to my locker, I heard Max calling my name.

"Hey TJ wait up!" Max yells.

"Oh hey Max what's up?"

I pretend I'm still mad at him.

"Is there anyway we could go to your house this afternoon to t-talk?"

"Damn!... I wasn't ready!" I thought

"Umm, sure Max meet me at my locker after school!"

"OK, see you at three!"

The day seemed to drag which was good, since I was not really looking forward to talking to Max. I tried to go over in my head what I was going to say to him. Was I willing to lose our friendship again? I kept contemplating this through the rest of my classes until it was time to meet up with Max.

"Hey TJ!"

Max walked up to my locker.

"OH,... hey Max!"

"I'm glad you agreed to finally talk to me!"

"Yeah! Well, there is some stuff that we need to discuss!"

After grabbing our books, we walked to my house. To my surprise, no one was home yet.

Stalling, I walked into the kitchen.

"Hey Max are you hungry?"

"Yeah! I never got to finish my lunch today."

"Why?"

I make us both sandwiches.

"Well,... Jake came over to talk to me. "

"OH!... W-why?"

I almost cover my hand in mayo, now worrying about how much Jake told Max!

"He was thinking about quitting the team but doesn't know how to tell coach."

"Why is Jake going to quit?!"

I sigh with relief.

"Well,... he said he wants to be himself from now on or something like that."

"OH!... OK!"

I hand Max his sandwich.

"Thanks TJ!... So, do you know what Jake is talking about?"

"No idea!" I lie.

"Yeah!... It seemed a little strange seeing as the season is almost over, but oh well!"

After we finished eating, Max and I headed up to my room to talk. I sat down on my desk chair while he sat on my bed

"So what did you want to talk about,... Max?"

"I wanted to tell you how very sorry I am for everything!... I hope you will forgive me!"

"Well Max,... I don't know! You hurt me pretty badly!"

I am not ready to tell him that I already forgave him

"I know TJ!... I-I fucked up, but I was scared!"

"You were scared?! What about me?! You beat the living shit out of me!"

I try not to lose my temper!

"I know! But,... I-I well thought that...that...well, never mind what I thought! It was wrong! And, I am truly sorry TJ for what I have put you through!... C- Could you ever forgive me?!"

"I don't know Max?! How do I know you won't flip out on me again?!"

"I promise it will never happen again!!!... You are my best friend! And, no matter what, we stick by each other through thick and thin!"

He replies with what I think are tears in his eyes.

I slowly get up from my chair, walk over and sit next to him.

"Max,... I know you didn't mean those things, BUT what I think hurt the worse was you turning your back on me!"

I now have tears in my own eyes!

"I know!... I know TJ!... I- I am so very sorry!... You were right! I am just like my ASSHOLE father!"

He sobs.

I want to hug him, take him in my arms and take all his pain away. BUT, I am still a little afraid.

Max must have noticed! Next thing I knew, I was wrapped in those strong arms with his tears falling onto my cheek.

"Oh Max you are nothing like HIM! He would never apologize or feel sorry for hurting someone!" I whisper in his ear.

"So (sniff) d-do you f-forgive me?"

"YES, I DO!"

Max raises his head to look at me.

Slowly, he brings his head closer.

Our lips touch sending sparks though out my body!
