"Jack put the note in his pocket and put the rose back in his locker. He grabbed his book and headed to English class, hopeful to see Matt again. What he didn't see was all the darting looks and weird faces people were giving him as he walked through the hallways."

Jack walked into class, hopeful to see that smile and those eyes there to greet him. But the desk where Matt was sitting yesterday was empty. `Where is he?' He thought to himself. Slightly down Jack took his seat and waited for class to start. He pulled the note out of his pocket and read it over and over. So absorbed in the note he didn't notice the people whispering and shooting fleeting glances at him. He was shocked out of his concentration by the bell ringing. Karen stood up and hushed the class. That was when Jack noticed that people kept staring at him. Thinking it was just because he was new, he ignored them. Karen gave some assignment that Jack didn't quite catch and sat back down at her desk. Jack had no idea what he was supposed to be doing, so he decided to daydream instead. He let his eyes wander over the kids in the classroom, and then finally out the window. That was when he saw something that he'd never forget.

Lying out in the parking lot, mangled and bleeding everywhere, unconscious, was the boy who had shown Jack such a good time the previous night, and who had opened his heart to him. Jack was in shock. Matt was one of the most popular guys in school, everybody loved him... who would do this? It took him no more than 10 seconds to realize that Matt seriously needed help. Jack didn't want to call any attention to himself, so he just walked up to Karen's desk and asked to use the bathroom. He ran through the halls, trying to find the closest exit to the parking lot. Finally finding the door that he needed Jack burst out the door and sprinted out in the lot, trying to remember where Matt was. Finally finding him in between two cars, he started to cry. Who had done this? Jack knelt on the ground next to Matt and tried to wake him up without any luck. Matt was barely breathing. He could hear the ragged breaths that Matt's body was forced to take to keep him alive. Not knowing what else to do Jack pulled out his phone and called his mom. She was at work but she answered after 3 rings.

"Mom. Help." Jack squeezed out in between sobs.

"Jack, what's wrong?!" His mother almost screamed an edge of panic in her voice. Jack didn't answer, just sobbed harder. "Honey, calm down. What's the matter?" Jack managed to compose himself enough to talk.

"I- It's Matt. He's hurt. I don't know what happened but he's bleeding everywhere and I think his arm is broken, and he's unconscious, and I don't know what to do."

"Oh my god. Honey, I'll be there in 10 minutes."

"Okay."

"Did you call 911?"

"No, I couldn't think. I just called you."

"Well I'm leaving now, call 911, and tell them you need an ambulance and where the school is."

"Okay."

"I'll be right there. You're okay, just stay calm."

"Okay. Bye mom." Jack hung up on his mother and dialed 911.

"911, what's your emergency?"

"My friend is very badly hurt. I need an ambulance immediately."

"Okay, where are you, sir?"

"I'm at 645 S. Main Street."

"The high school?"

"Yeah."

"Okay, I'll send someone right away."

"Thank you."

Jack hung up on the operator and knelt back down next to matt. He pulled the mangled boy into his arms and tried desperately to get him to wake up, again without any luck.

Jack's mom got there first. She barely got out of the car and she was already running towards the two boys.

"Oh my god! What happened?!"

"I don't know. I think he was beaten up, but I can't get him to wake up to ask him."

"Did you call an ambulance?"

Jack didn't have to answer, because right then the ambulance pulled into the parking lot, siren blaring. The saw the 2 boys and Jack's mom and the EMT hopped out of the vehicle to help, while the other one pulled a stretcher from the back and wheeled it towards them. By then people had noticed the ambulance and were crowding around the windows of the school to see what happened.

"Are you this boy's mother?" The first EMT asked Jack's mom.

"No, but he's a close friend of my sons. And I came here to help."

"Alright, well we'll have to notify his parents. But let's get him on the stretcher." The two EMT's took Matt and lifted him not-so-gently onto the stretcher.

"Be careful!" Jack screamed. It was the first thing he said since the ambulance had gotten there, and it seemed to take the EMT's by surprise.

"What the bloody hell is going on out here?" It was the principal, Mr. Coffen. Then he noticed Matt on the stretcher and his eyes widened. "What happened to him?" He asked nobody in particular.

It was Jack who answered him. "I think he was beaten up. I don't know by whom, or what for, but that's what it looks like."

Kids had started coming out of the school to see what was up and Mr. Coffen turned around to urge them back inside. The EMT's wheeled Matt back to the ambulance and one of them got in the back with him. Jack looked at him with questioning eyes, pleading to go with them. The EMT nodded once and Jack walked over and got into the ambulance.

"What are you doing Jack" His mom asked.

"I'm going with him. Obviously"

The other EMT closed one of the doors and Jack waved sadly at his mother. Just before the other door closed Jack heard a yell from the crowd of kids. "That's what you get you fucking faggo-" The rest was cut off by the slam of the door. 2 seconds later Jack heard the other door open and close and the siren came back on. The van gave a lurch and started off too fast towards the hospital. Ten minutes later, the longest ten minutes in the history of history for Jack, the van slowed to a stop and the EMT opened the back doors again. They took the stretcher with Matt on it out of the back and wheeled it towards the automatic doors of the hospital, not once looking back to see if Jack was following them. Of course he was. He followed them straight into the emergency room where a nurse stopped him and asked him where he thought he was going.

"I'm going with my boyfriend." He said.

"I'm sorry, but only immediate family is allowed in the O.R."

"But I have to be with him."

"I'm sorry but you'll have to wait here."

Jack's mom walked in through the sliding doors and called to Jack. "Come on honey, listen to her. Come sit down." He did as he was told and slumped into a chair next to his mother and started sobbing again. Around 20 minutes later a very attractive brown haired lady ran into the waiting room screaming. "Where's my baby?! Where is he?!" Jack looked up and saw those same blue eyes. It had to be Matt's mother.

"Ma'am, please calm down. Who are you looking for?" It was the same nurse who had stopped Jack before.

"My son! The school told me he was here! Where is he?!" Matt's mother broke down into sobs.

"Who is your son ma'am?" Matt's mom was too upset to answer. So Jack stood up.

"He's the one who I was trying to go in with and you stopped me. Matt is his name. I don't know his last name." Matt's mom looked up at Jack. He hadn't seen it but she had sunk to her knees.

"Wh-Who are you?" She asked him quietly through her tears.

"I'm Jack. One of Matt's close friends. I'm new here, but he was really nice to me, and I came with him in the ambulance. I was the one who called 911 for him."

"Thank you, you're an angel. But what happened to him?" She was whispering now, almost praying.

"I don't really know. It looked like he was beaten up really bad, but I couldn't be sure."

Staying quiet through the whole exchange the nurse looked up from her files and motioned for Matt's mom to follow her. Jack held out a hand to help her up.

"Right this way Mrs. Larson." Matt's mom started to follow the nurse, but stopped after 2 steps and turned. She grabbed Jack by the hand and towed him after her.

"But, Mrs. L... she said I can't go in." He protested half-heartedly.

"You're with me. I give you permission to come in. Please." Jack followed them quickly and soon they were in a room. Room 313. Matt was lying in a bed, wearing a hospital gown. Still unconscious but cleaned up, with stitches up his arm and on the side of his face. His other arm was in a cast. Mrs. Larson burst into tears again and sank into the chair that was next to the bed. Jack walked in from the doorway and sat down on the edge of the bed, careful not to jostle it too much. He didn't know how bad Matt was hurt, but he didn't want to make it any worse. He stared at that angelic face that had been smiling at him not even 24 hours ago. He reached out gingerly and moved a stray strand of hair from Matt's face.

"I'm sorry." He whispered. He didn't know why, but Jack felt like the entire thing was his fault. It was like his touch was a jolt of electricity. Matt's eyes opened instantly.

"Jack?" He croaked, barely above a whisper.

"Yes baby, I'm here." Jack shoved back his tears, but a single one escaped and slid down his cheek.

Mrs. Larson had looked up upon hearing her son speak.

"Matt! You're awake? Thank goodness! Are you alright honey?" She looked at Jack, and what he had just said registered. "Did you just call him baby?" All three of grew wide. Matt and Jack's with fear, Matt's moms with shock.
