"The Housekeeper" part 11

As the week progressed there were several times when Kevin showed signs of being nervous about meeting Mum and Dad; I did all I could to calm his nerves but the tension was still there.

I took the afternoon off on Friday so that we would both be there to welcome the folks when they arrived. Kevin had made a nice steak and ale pie for dinner that evening with home made vegetable soup as a starter. He also made some nice cakes ready for afternoon tea when they arrived.

It was just after four when the bell rang and I took Kevin by the hand to make sure he was there beside me as I opened the door. After the usual kiss from Mum and a hug from Dad, I introduced Kevin, Dad shook his hand but Mum, as Mums often do, gave him a quick kiss on the cheek, of course, Kevin blushed. He took their bags through to the guest room and we followed, It was the first time the folks had seen the apartment with furniture in it, although they had popped down to give their approval when I bought it, so I gave them the grand tour while Kevin made the tea.

As we finished the walk around, I made as if to walk into the lounge saying, "I think a cup of tea would be nice" but Mum said, "Why don't we have it in the kitchen, then we can talk to Kevin"

Mum remarked on the lovely cakes which Kevin had made and as we ate we talked about the business and how it was doing. As I was pouring our second cup, and Kevin was seeing to something on the stove Mum said, "Kevin I think you and I are going to get along very well, I can quite understand why Richard has fallen in love with you"

My head snapped up and I almost dropped the teapot, Kevin did exactly the same and we both looked at Mum.

"Don't be scared or shocked" said Mum with a smile, "I am right aren't I?"

I couldn't speak, I just nodded.

"I guess we were thinking along the right lines Mother" said Dad.

"Would you two young gentlemen like to sit down; sit with me Kevin" said Mum as she patted the seat next to her.

"Dad and I may be a little older but we aren't as green as we are cabbage looking" said Mum, "We thought there was more to it than you actually said in words on the phone, you always brought Kevin into the conversation, and then there were the slippers in your bedroom"

"The slippers?" I asked with a frown.

"Yes, the slippers beside the chair, you are wearing slippers Richard"

"For all you know I might have two pairs" I said.

"Possible" said Mum, "But when you were younger I could never get you to wear slippers so it isn't very likely you have suddenly acquired two pairs, also there is the business of the eyes"

"The eyes" said Kevin.

"Yes, the eyes" said Dad, "You young men should look at yourselves sometimes, the twinkle in your eyes when you look at each other, it's almost as bad as standing on the rooftops shouting, 'we're in love' "

I looked at Kevin and said, "I don't think we will bother to explain to

Mum and Dad about us, I guess they are one step ahead of us, so, Mum and Dad, do you approve of my 'Boyfriend' ?"

"Whole heartedly" said Dad, "We only met Kevin half an hour ago but I think I speak for Mum when I say we admire your choice"

"I agree" said Mum, "Even a blind man could see you love each other; you have our blessing"

For the first time since the folks arrived Kevin uttered a complete sentence, "Aren't you even a bit upset, I know that you already knew about Richard, but now finding he has a partner who is a man, and you will never have grandchildren"

"Of course we are disappointed that we will never be grandparents, but that isn't the end of the world" said Dad, "The most important thing to us is seeing Richard happy and now that you are his partner that includes you; Mum and I will always be here for both of you"

Kevin looked as if he was about to cry and I must be honest I wasn't far off turning on the waterworks; I knew that Mum and Dad would accept my decision but I never expected them to take Kevin into their hearts as they clearly were.

"I'm so happy I could hug you" said Kevin to Mum

"As you are now part of the family I think that would be OK, come here" said Mum as she pulled my lover into her arms.

"Do you two want to wash off the travel stains and make yourselves comfortable, I will help Kevin here, although usually he chases me away from the kitchen" I said.

"On this occasion I won't" said Kevin, "You can lay up the dining room, everything is ready" and he turned back to the stove.

I went into the dining room and received a shock, I knew we had a nice white damask tablecloth but also there were four starched linen napkins ready folded into tricorn hats plus eight wine glasses.

"I didn't know we had these serviettes" I said to Kevin. "And why do we need eight glasses?"

"Until yesterday we didn't have any nice serviettes so I went to John Lewis and bought some, also we don't know whether Mum and Dad will want red or white wine so I put both glasses ready, we don't want them thinking we don't know how to entertain" said Kevin.

I walked behind my boyfriend and kissed the back of his neck, he then turned his head and gave me a smacker, boy that guy certainly knows how to kiss.

"This is yet another reason that I love you so much, I wouldn't have thought of linen, I would have used paper, and I would have put out glasses and let them choose which wine they wanted"

"Ah, this the housekeeper speaking, it's what the Boss pays me for" said Kevin, "I think I might get to like this job, especially as I get to sleep with the Boss" "Mmmmm I think I might make your employment permanent" I said, "Did you read your contract - you have to give ten years notice if you want to leave"

Just then we heard Mum and Dad returning so we quickly poured some sherry and joined them for a drink.

When we moved into the dining room the folks were most impressed, and as the meal progressed the compliments were flowing in the direction of Kevin, especially when he produced the dessert, it was delicious. Of course Mum wanted the recipe, "Very simple" said Kevin, "Tinned half peaches drained, fill the centre with broken ginger nut biscuits and trickle honey over them. Put them in a very low oven as you start the main course and they are perfect when needed, then top with whipped cream, or single cream if you prefer."

At the end of the meal I made the coffee as Kevin loaded the dishwasher then we joined Mum and Dad for coffee and brandy.

My parents have never been late birds and when they went to their room we followed their example.

As we cuddled together in bed Kevin said, "If it's possible, I love you more than ever after today, I can't believe your Mum and Dad guessed our secret, they really are lovely people."

"They have to be, after all they have put up with me for twenty eight years" I told him, "but I'm a bit worried about our eyes; if they can see it how many other people can"

"Like my Dad said to us, parents notice that sort of thing, I don't think we need worry" replied Kevin.

After a long sensuous kiss Kevin said, "I'm feeling so happy I would like to give you something"

"Oh no, not again, I'm still sore from last time" I said with a laugh.

"Mr. Thomas, you have a one track mind, do you ever think about anything other than sex, I thought there was more to our relationship" said Kevin.

"Well you can't blame me when I have such a gorgeous cute young guy next to me" I answered, "Well, what are you going to give me?"

Kevin hopped out of bed and padded across to the dresser he brought back a small card, "I was going to give this to you a little while ago but I thought you would think me soppy, but maybe tonight is the right time"

He handed me the card and this is what I read.

'Knowing You Are There'

The qualities that shine from You have lightened up my life.

My problems that seemed heavy You shared and made them light.

All worries seem to fade away whenever you're around,

for if I fall I know it's You who'll lift me from the ground.

When times are hard and I feel lost I never now despair,

for the thing that gives me comfort is

knowing You are there. (K. Ryan)

By the time I had read it my eyes were watering and I looked into Kevin's eyes and said, "This is beautiful, it means so much to me, I knew you loved me but these words put things in such a beautiful way, how can I ever thank you?"

"Just carry on loving me, you wonderful man" said Kevin, and sealed my lips with a kiss.

After that we wanted to make love but as we often get vocal we decided that with Mum and Dad in the next room that wasn't the best thing. Instead we made do with a nice sexy sixty-nine, you can't make much noise with your mouth full.

As we spooned up together to sleep I said, "What do you think we should do with Mum and Dad tomorrow?"

After a pause for the old brain cells to tick over Kevin said, "I enjoyed that trip we did over to Cowes, do you think they would like it?"

"That's a brilliant idea, with lunch in a pub as we did before; I have a feeling they might want to take us out to dinner tomorrow night to give you a break" I replied.

"Good" said Kevin, "That's tomorrow taken care of, I have a couple of ideas for dinner on Sunday evening, and how about a trip into the 'Forest' on Sunday?"

"I don't know why I bother to ask, you seem to have everything taken care of" I told him.

"Isn't that what you pay me for" said Kevin smiling over his shoulder, I couldn't resist this young man and we kissed again.

I was just falling asleep when I heard a whispered "Richard"

"MMmmmm" I responded.

"Do you think your parents would mind if I called them Mum and Dad"

"I'm sure they would be honoured to have another son, why don't you ask them in the morning" I answered.

"OK, I'll do just that" came a sleepy answer and I heard his breathing pattern change, he had fallen asleep.

Several times during breakfast I looked up to see Kevin looking at me and each time he looked down to his plate. It seemed I wasn't the only person who noticed.

"Kevin" said Mum, "Is something wrong; you appear to be on edge"

"Mr and Mrs Thomas" Kevin began, "Can I ask you something"

"Don't you think that's a bit formal, you are part of the family now, why not call us Mum and Dad. Now what was the question?" asked Mum.

"You have just answered it" said Kevin, "I was going to ask if I could call you Mum and Dad, my Mum left when I was just twelve, since then it has just been me and Dad, looking out for each other. I guess that is why I became so domesticated. Dad was working so much it was left to me to look after the house and do the cooking. It wasn't long before I realised I enjoyed it. I went to catering college, but I found I loved the practical stuff but was hopeless on the academic side so I dropped out, I guess I'm a bit thick"

"Stop right there" said Dad, it wasn't often Dad raised his voice.

"Don't ever let me hear you put yourself down, just because you aren't an academic doesn't mean you are thick, I know people with a list of degrees who haven't got enough common sense to lick a postage stamp. I have only known you a few hours but I have found you to be a very sensible loving and caring person, you are our son"

"Yes, and don't forget that" said Mum, "there aren't any thick people in our family, qualifications don't mean everything, love and common sense mean far more"

"I've been trying to tell him that for ages, in a lot of ways he is far more intelligent than me" I said.

"Right, subject closed" said Dad, "What are we doing today?"

"My boyfriend has it all worked out, come on Kevin tell them" I said.

"We thought you might like a pub lunch, but the pub is on the 'Isle of Wight' in West Cowes, an hour ferry ride each way" said Kevin "The ferry is at eleven"

"In that case we better get moving" said Mum, "We have never been there".

"Dinner tonight is on us, you're having a night off" said Dad

"We thought you might offer" I said, "But tomorrow night we eat at home, we would like you to meet Joe, Kevin's Dad, he often comes on Sunday evening.
