The Human Bearer

His inner alert reacted when he realized someone was entering the room but he quickly relaxed at the sight of daddy-in-law slithering quietly towards the big water tank. According to the artificial day-night cycle the ship followed, it had to be at least after midnight. On Xeno, living with Xana had left him convinced that these snakemen needed about the same hours of sleep as humans and didn't appear nocturnal. However, their circumstances were far from normal, so nothing was as it should.

He shifted to let Xeus know that he was no longer asleep. There had been days spent here alone, only with Junior as company. Riordan could use a little bit of adult conversation since after Ferix's visit, no one else had dropped by – or been allowed to do so.

"Xeus," he called out softly, although Junior slept tucked against his side and didn't move at all. "How is Xana?"

"Why isn't Junior sleeping underwater? He needs to grow."

"He spends plenty of time in there during the day. But at night he prefers to sleep with me," Riordan explained, ignoring his daddy-in-law's abrupt manner. Hopefully, Xana was well, and Xeus was just annoyed to return to his quarters only to see his well-established order a bit disturbed.

It was annoying to talk to someone in the semi-dark like that, but he didn't want to wake Junior up. It looked like that decision was no longer his to make.

"Wake the boy up," Xeus ordered. "He needs to grow strong."

"Hey, chill a little. And can you not talk so loudly? Junior doesn't like it. On top of it all, shouldn't we be worried that he grows so much faster than other Xenolites? Is this even normal?"

"Xenolites are not your fragile Earthian babies," Xeus said with scorn, but he did lower his voice a fraction. "The faster and bigger the boy grows, the better."

"Okay, I trust you on this, but he is still a child, and he shouldn't get tough love all the time. Let him be a baby for some time before you send him to boot camp."

Junior wrapped his tail lazily around Riordan's arm. "Dada, sleep now."

"See what you did?" Riordan scolded his daddy-in-law. "You woke him up."

A low hiss from Xeus followed by one from Junior let him know that there was an exchange between the two that went over his head in more ways than one. He should catch Kyle and ask him to teach him how to eavesdrop on these Xenos. Or have Ferix teach him more than just the basics of Xeno communication.

"Hey," he said sternly, "don't you know it's not polite to communicate brain to brain when other people are present?"

Xeus ignored him and, to Riordan's dismay, Junior moved from his place and quickly wrapped around his granddad's arm. They both moved towards the tank and dove inside without throwing him another look.

"Fine," Riordan said with a grunt, "pretend I'm invisible."

He would talk to Junior tomorrow and find out exactly how much the kid liked the tough love grandpa was dishing out. Then, with careful consideration, he would try to steer Xeus in the right direction. If what Ferix Baserat was saying was true, Junior had enough Earthian genes inside him to have slightly different needs than a regular Xenolite.

When he woke up in the morning, it wasn't because something else alerted him but because he was trapped in a languorous dream and part of it seemed to have become quite real. In the imaginary world, he was in Xana's arms, and his Xeno husband was making love to him slowly, using his hands to caress him while other, naughtier parts were penetrating him with a laziness that could only mean that they had all the time in the world to enjoy themselves.

The sensorial attack, however, appeared to be quite real, and Riordan's eyes snapped open. Xeus was in bed with him, and while he wasn't using his hands to caress him as it had happened in the dream with Xana, it was pretty much a given that his tail was hard at work in the warmest orifice it could find.

"What the--" Riordan mumbled. "Xeus, come on, aren't we past that?"

The tail in his ass didn't stop its slow to and fro. "His Royal Chancellor told me that according to preliminary observations, bearers increase their milk production if they are comforted through intercourse."

Riordan clenched his jaw and ass at the same time. "Trust me, I'm not that comforted. Didn't His Royal Chancellor think it appropriate to inform you that fucking your son's bearer with your tail is actually not done?"

Xeus appeared amused by his resistance. He had no trouble, it seemed, to push past the clenched buttocks and hammer at Riordan's prostate relentlessly. It was hard to resist when something like this happened, and daddy-in-law was quite generous with the seth coming from the tip of his tail. Riordan felt embarrassed by the squelching sounds made by the penetration of his ass.

"Stop ignoring me, dammit," he whispered angrily. "My milk production is good enough as it is. And Junior—For fuck's sake, Xeus, he might see us. Or hear us."

"He's sleeping soundly and I separate us from him when I'm doing this and not only through this flimsy divider I put up for your sake."

"You Xenos are major weirdos." Riordan felt pretty pissed, but he had to admit that daddy-in-law was more considerate than what he'd been expecting from a Xeno like him. He needed to remind himself that Xeus was old school and that wasn't going to change overnight. Neither his attitude towards bearers.

"In Xeno culture, just like in yours, our offspring are protected and cherished until they reach the age needed to understand certain concepts and situations."

"And boy, I'm glad for it," Riordan breathed out.

"Do you need to release your seed?"

"Thanks, but I'd rather not," Riordan grunted as he grabbed the sheets with one hand.

He was on one side, and Xeus was holding him with one leg up in the air while doing the naughty to his ass.

"It is healthful for your kind," Xeus insisted.

"Xeus," Riordan moaned, "when Xana finds out about this, he won't be happy."

"I fail to follow your reasoning. He will be content that his bearer was in my care."

"Trust me, you have no idea." Riordan fought the new wave of pleasure that moved through him. It was difficult on a regular basis to resist these guys. When they put their minds to driving a human crazy with desire, they could do so at the drop of a hat.

"You called me `father' once. That is how you should address me from now on."

Riordan blinked and turned his head to meet the heavy gaze. The Xeno's eyes were burning with something new.

"Great, let's make it totally weird," he murmured and closed his eyes. "How long is this going to take?"

He jolted when Xeus grabbed one of his nipples and began squeezing. "I believe this is enough."

"Alright." Riordan let out a loud sigh of relief when Xeus finally let go of his ass. He felt the loss immediately and tried to clench his ass cheeks to make them forget how they had just been pushed apart until earlier.

"Say it. Address me as `father'," Xeus demanded.

"Are you serious? I've only called you that one time because the situation was completely crazy. And I didn't mean it. I wanted to ask you if you're Xana's father. So it was all just a big misunderstanding." He babbled and he knew it. But he needed to get as far as he could from daddy-in-law before he started begging to be fucked into the mattress until he came. There wasn't much he could do as things stood, and Xana's reaction to this family arrangement would surely piss him off to no end, but the least Riordan could do was not to act like a bitch in heat all the freaking time.

"You must," Xeus insisted.

"Why?" Riordan watched the snakeman with new wariness. "Come on, is it something Marn said again?"

"Address him properly, even when he is not present."

"Ugh, okay, I forget you Xenos are such sticklers for formalities until you end up bonking the hell out of humans. Please, just tell me, is this idea yours or his?"

"I mentioned it to him, how surprised I was when you called me `father'. His Royal Chancellor told me that it is a custom on Earth that determines you to call me that. The concept of in-laws. We don't have it."

"Right," Riordan commented dryly as he put on his robe quickly. He only had to open it in front to feed Junior, and he didn't want to trot around in the buff while daddy-in-law's wandering eyes would be following his every move. "That's because you don't treat bearers as more than just walking carrying pouches for your eggs." Something was niggling him, restless and annoying at the back of his head. "I mean, with Xana's mother... how did you behave?"

"The lizard queen of Fatiah V had no need for me to behave towards her in any way," Xeus replied serenely.

"But you must have spent some time with her, right? Copulating so that your exact match happened?"

Xeus looked at him like he was growing another head. Then, he appeared to realize something. "I keep forgetting that your species requires this long accommodation period with the Xeno race."

"We're the only ones then?" Riordan stared at daddy-in-law for a while until he realized that Xeus wasn't in the least bothered being gawped at. "Come on, give me something. What's the deal with us? With you and us?"

"You are quite inquisitive for a bearer," Xeus commented and pursed his lips. "However, I will indulge you. His Royal Chancellor believes in strengthening our bond through the means of your human understanding. My missions have always taken me away from Xeno for prolonged periods of time, hence my lack of familiarity with the way my species has gotten compatible with yours. Before defeating Earth, reproduction for Xenos had always been a clear process. We chose our bearers, based on their ability to carry our eggs, and we proceeded to impregnate the appropriate receivers."

"How romantic," Riordan murmured under his breath. "Please, continue, and don't mind my comments on the side."

Xeus frowned slightly but he did continue, not without returning Riordan's jab. "His Royal Chancellor warned me of your propensity for sarcasm. Another human trait. I will continue your instruction now. When we invaded Fatiah V, I led the first attack. There was no need for a second. For this triumph, His Royal Chancellor granted me their queen as the bearer for my egg."

"Wow, she must not have been very happy about it."

"There are mostly females on that planet. We have very few females on Xeno," Xeus explained. "Had," he corrected himself right away.

"None of them survived?" Riordan asked, his heart squeezing painfully, although he had never met a female Xeno.

Xeus shook his head and pursed his lips in displeasure. Maybe reminding him of what had happened on Xeno was painful for him, too.

"There is one now, at least one that I know of," Riordan said hurriedly. "Lewis's little girl. And Lakni's."

"Yes, a wonderful accident," Xeus said, and his face lit up some. Mentioning Xenolites to the older general seemed to have a positive effect on him. "Our compatibility with the species on Fatiah V was outstanding. And you mentioned thinking that Sherahav wasn't happy of being my choice. I can assure you that she felt honored."

"Sheravah," Riordan said slowly. "You know her name."

"Of course," Xeus replied and gave him a long look as if he couldn't comprehend why that was a big deal. Talking about cultural differences. Riordan felt like walking on eggshells around these guys sometimes.

"To satisfy your mystifying curiosity, my encounters with Her Majesty were brief and to the point. I only saw her when I impregnated her and when she delivered Xana. I took the boy to Xeno right away."

"And she was fine with it?" Riordan asked.

"Yes. Duty is as important on Fatiah V as is on Xeno."

Riordan didn't care to remind Xeus that the planet was no more, or that at least had to be uninhabitable now. He understood what Xana's dad meant by it. The Xeno race continued to exist, here, on Tu'lek. And maybe on that other ship that Kyle had mentioned at one point, although no Xeno had confirmed its existence until now.

"Has Xana ever missed her?"

"That is an odd question. How could he miss someone he has never met?"

"What about her?"

"That is just as odd a question as your previous one."

"Having a lizard queen as a mom must be pretty tough, then," Riordan said and shook his head. "And yes, I know. I haven't met mine, either, but that doesn't mean that I've never thought of her. Or who my dad was. We humans are weird that way."

"And we're willing to indulge your weirdness. Given your positive influence on our species, you are given special allowances. Do not take them for granted."

"Far from me," Riordan hurried to say. He was about to push away the divider and go for Junior, who should be awake by now, when he recalled his conversation with Ferix. "Just how mixed are our DNAs in the Xenolites humans have carried and delivered so far? And have you taken traits from other species until now?"

"Yes. It's how we grow stronger. But the human race is different," Xeus said as he appeared to be lost in his own musings for a bit.

"Different in how we didn't prove compatible with you from the get-go?"

"That is one notable difference, yes. Before Earth, we hadn't encountered such an issue. At the same time, you appealed to us and your bodies rejected the eggs."

"So, why not move on?" Riordan asked. "Why insist on turning us into bearers?" At this point, with Junior who wanted to cuddle and play all day long, and Xana who loved him dearly, Riordan no longer regretted that had been the Xenos' choice. Still, having some answers would be a nice touch.

Xeus hesitated, his brow furrowed. "It appears that too many of our kind were enthralled with yours. There was no need for so many brothels on Xenos before you."

"Wow. You like to bend us over," Riordan commented, although he had heard something along those lines before. "Have sex with us," he explained as Xeus quirked an eyebrow at him.

"Yes. It appears to be pleasurable. Xenos enjoy experiencing pleasure, but it had never been an imperative."

"Before Earth," Riordan completed the phrase left hanging between them.

"Yes. Now, proceed to feed the boy. I hope your curiosity is satisfied."

"For the moment," Riordan said brightly. "You're lucky I have important things to attend to."

"Your sense of humor," Xeus commented and his lips twitched for a moment.

Riordan's eyes grew wide. "Was that a smile? Because I said something funny?"

"Do not flatter yourself, bearer. I do not entertain such nonsense."

"Okay," Riordan replied but he was far from convinced. "Now, if you want me to call you father, you'll have to do your part, too. Call me by my name."

"That is how in-laws do on Earth?" Xeus inquired.

"Yep, and it works," Riordan said.

"Very well, then. Riordan, proceed to feed the boy. Always report to me when you notice changes in his weight and appetite. He will have to consume more than just your milk."

"I see, but can we not put him on a diet of insects and worms?"

Xeus seemed quite affronted by his demand. "What is wrong with a diet of insects and worms?"

Mentioning that it was pretty unnerving to watch Xenos gobbling down such treats and a tad stomach-turning wouldn't be the right way to go. So Riordan opted for a more diplomatic answer. "Nothing, but he will most likely eat his first meals of this kind with me, so it would be nice to share normal, I mean, human food."

"I'll allow it," Xeus said, seemingly in a generous mood. "But he will have what other Xenos have on a regular basis."

We're going to see about that, Riordan thought but caught himself. He shouldn't keep Junior from experiencing the same things as his grandpa and daddy. However, he well recalled how Xana had taken to eating the same foods humans preferred and without any problems. Maybe Junior was like him and Riordan wouldn't have to watch his son gladly slurping on worms and whatnot.

Oh, well, he sighed, if that was what Junior wanted, he would get used to it. There was nothing his little one wouldn't get if he wanted. Maybe that was the path on having him spoiled rotten, but it wasn't like Riordan could help it.

Junior didn't need any encouragement to wake up. He swam to the surface and put his arms around Riordan's neck.

"My little honey bunny," Riordan praised him as he took him in his arms. He was getting used to having his clothes wet all the time. Maybe he was adapting to the Xeno species, too. Nothing seemed as inconvenient or unpleasant as before.

"I want one," Junior declared, his voice not so different from one of a human toddler. "A bunny."

Riordan smiled. Were there bunnies on Tanez? Who knew? But maybe there were other animals they could just name bunnies. That would solve the issue.

"When we get home," he promised.

Junior had no clear notion of what that meant, but he seemed pleased with his parent's spoken commitment. He latched onto Riordan's chest and began sucking with all his might.

Grandpa shouldn't worry. The little one would grow up at the same incredible pace since he appeared capable of gobbling down amazing quantities of milk.

He was taken aback by a heavy hand resting on his shoulder. "I must go watch over Xana. He's awake from time to time, and we're communicating. See you later, Riordan," Xeus promised.

"Please take good care of him. And thank you, father," Riordan replied, unsure of the word.

It didn't sound that weird, even when he said it out loud. Maybe he had a family now.

What a strange thought but wonderful, too. He could live with that idea.
