THE JOCK AND THE TUTOR 14

We did have time to go past the hospital but I was worried we would be late for school. We no longer had to scrub before going in but we still had to put on a gown and hair net. I would have to ask Doctor Patterson about that. It would seem to me the scrub was more important than the gowns because our hands touched her.

We both gave Mary a kiss with Troy on one side and me on the other. Troy took her hand and started talking to her. Her fingers started moving and her head was going back and forth. That didn't seem right to me. It was like she was trying to say something.

I went out to the nurse's station to check with the nurse. She had not noticed anything.

"Do you know if Doctor Patterson is in yet?" I asked.

She handed me Mary's chart and said, "I can page him if you want me to."

"Yes please." I replied as I looked at the chart. All the numbers were the same as yesterday so I assumed he did not back the coma medications off. It must be at 50% still.

I went back to Mary's room. A little while later the nurse came in and said he was not answering the page.

As we were leaving I stopped and asked for the chart again. As I wrote on it I told the nurse, "Please have Doctor Patterson read this as soon as he gets in."

I think you should stop the coma meds. She is trying to tell us something.

When I handed it back to the nurse she looked at it and then said, "I will text his cell. He will want to know this right away."

"What did you write?" Troy asked as we walked down the hall towards the elevators.

"A note to doctor Patterson." I replied.

"I know that." He said, "What did it say?"

I smiled because I knew it was bugging Troy. I could see he was getting frustrated with me.

"I told him to take the coma meds off completely." I didn't tell him the rest because I wasn't sure I was right and I thought he would get upset about it.

We walked into the cafeteria at school and I could see Sherrie was ready to pounce. Just then the 5 minute bell rang and everyone got up to go to class. Troy and I kept walking. Sherrie grabbed my arm and spun me around.

She looked up and down my body stopping on my face. "Well at least you got your glow back."

Of course I blushed.

As we were walking to class she asked, "What the hell happened yesterday? You weren't here after school."

"We had to pick Troy's dad up at the hospital and take him home." I replied, "Troy got me out of last period so we could go."

That distracted her train of thought. "How's he doing?" She asked

"Pretty good for someone carrying around a 50 pound cast. His cast goes from his waist to his neck except for his left arm."

About that time we were at my first period class and I turned in and she kept going. I wondered how far she got before it dawned on her.

I don't know how she does it but between first and second period she comes out of nowhere, grabs my arm and pushed me into the drinking fountain alcove. She didn't say anything, she just looked but that was enough. I knew what she wanted.

"We can't talk about it here." I said, exasperated. "It has to be away from school or anyone else."

Her shoulders dropped with a defeated look. "I'll be at your house at 4:00." And she let me go.

I smiled at myself because I knew I would not be there.

Again at lunch Troy and I sat across from each other and Sherrie was next to Troy. I kind of liked this new way because I could look directly into Troy's face.

Troy was giving everyone an update on his mom and dad when I felt something rub the inside of my leg. I stopped mid-bite and looked up. Troy had a wide grin almost laughing. Of course Sherrie was the only one that picked up on the exchange.

I tell you that girl needs to be a detective. No criminal could get away with anything. She is very observant.

Troy came to get me during last period again. We went straight to the hospital.

We were in Mary's room when Doctor Patterson came in carrying my lab coat and being followed by the interns.

"I hope you're correct." He said to me, "I took her completely off."

One of the interns, who had the chart, asked me, "Did you write this note?"

I nodded.

Mary squeezed my hand harder than she ever had before. I looked at her and she was trying to say something. I leaned over so my ear was close to her mouth.

"It sounds like leg." I said.

She squeezed it hard again. "It's your leg." I asked her. She squeezed my hand.

"Which one?" Doctor Patterson asked.

She opened her eyes slightly looking directly at me.

"Is it your left leg?" Nothing happened.

A few seconds later I asked, "Is it your right leg?" She squeezed my hand.

The doctor was watching. He pointed to two of the interns, "You and you, take her down to MRI. I want that leg scanned stat. You got that."

"Yes sir." They both replied and left to get a gurney.

As we left to do rounds he said to Troy, "You can wait here. I won't keep Rodger very long.

It was the fastest we had done rounds since I have been doing them. Upon entering the patient's room Doctor Patterson would look at the chart, pass it on and ask, "Are there any questions?" We were off to the next one. Forty-Five minutes later we were back to Mary's room.

She was not there. Troy was sitting in the chair waiting.

"You two can go on home," he said to us, "I'll let you know what I find as soon as I get the MRI results.

"Do you think it is from the pins you put in?" I asked.

"It could be," he replied, "But I want to make sure."

As we went in the front door the smell from the roast cooking was heavenly. My mom was sitting in the front room with John.

She stood as soon as she saw us. "I never knew John could be such a bitch." She said.

I was shocked. I have never heard my mom talk like that.

Troy said, "See, I told you. He isn't that way with Rodger."

I walked over and flipped the lever to cause him to lay back with his feet up. John gave me a dirty look but didn't say anything.

I looked at my mom and said, "He needs to be reclined most of the time." Then I walked into the kitchen.

Mom came in behind me, "That is a large roast so your dad and Robby are coming over. I fixed a salad and found some corn in the freezer. Do you think John can come to our house tomorrow night?"

"No," I replied, "He is not supposed to leave the house. In two weeks he goes to be checked, maybe after that. We are ordering pizza tomorrow night and I already told Troy we need to go grocery shopping."

We were getting the plates and silverware out while talking. We had just finished setting the table when dad and Robby came in.

Mom got the salad out while Troy helped his dad to the table. For once they were not bickering with each other. We prayed and started on the salad. Since mom and I do not eat as much we finished salad and went after the rest of the food.

"Damn," I said, "I'm a pretty good cook."

It dawned on me I said damn in front of my parents. The room went dead quiet then everybody broke out laughing but me. Of course I blushed.

Mom and I cleaned up and got the dish washer started. Going into the living room we found the four guys watching ESPN.

They got ready to leave. Mom gave me a hug and told me to be good. (Yeah right, I wanted Troy to fuck my brains out.) My brother surprised me by giving me a hug also. He buried his head in my chest and didn't want to let go.

After they left, John was sitting in his recliner, Troy was on the couch and I was lying with my head in his lap. I could smell his sent rising from his crotch. MMMmmmm, it was delightful.

My cell rang. I didn't recognize the number. It was Keith.

"Damn you're good." He said as soon as I answered. "You don't need med school you can come right to work here at the hospital. Well I wish but they wouldn't let you."

"What?" I said.

"After reducing the coma medication she was awake enough to know something was wrong. The pain in her right leg was caused by a blood clot that was partially blocking an artery. I operated to clear it and we have her under until morning. I did a second MRI to make sure everything else was clear. You're a natural and you're instincts are incredible. I don't know how you picked up she was trying to tell us something."

"I think angels help me." I said.

Troy and John were looking at me trying to figure out who I was talking to and what was it about.

While I was talking to Keith the doorbell rang. Troy went to answer it.

"How did you get my number?" I asked because very few people knew it.

"I called your dad." He said, "But he made me promise I wouldn't keep it and bug you about medical school."

I laughed. It sounded just like something my dad would do.

In walked Troy and Sherrie.

"Where do you want to do this?" she asked.

I wiggled the phone at my ear so she could tell I was talking.

"How early tomorrow can we see her?" I asked Keith.

"I'll have her awake around 6:00." He replied.

"We'll be there by 6:00 then."

Troy gave me a look that said he didn't want to be up that early. Once he found out why he will change his mind.

As soon as we said goodbye I started explaining. I could see tears forming in Johns eyes. Troy had a worried look but then relaxed once he heard all of it.

As soon as I finished Sherrie came over, grabbed my wrist and pulled me towards the dining room. Troy followed us.

"What are you doing here?" she asked Troy.

"It's my house." He replied.

"I mean here in this room?"

"Making sure you don't beat the crap out of Rodger. He tells you what he wants and if that isn't good enough for you then tough shit."

"What do you want to know?" I asked.

"All of it." She said, "Start with why you didn't have the glow Monday."

"We were at my house and my dad wouldn't let us do it."

"The religious bullshit." She said. It wasn't really a question but more of a statement.

"NO," I said. "He doesn't want Troy to get in trouble. Because he is over 17 and more than 2 years older than me he could be charged with statutory rape even though it is consensual, even with their approval."

"That's bullshit." She said.

"But that is the law." I replied.

She looked at Troy and then back at me.

"Please," I said, "If anyone finds out we could be in serious trouble. You're the only one that knows and I don't think anyone else even suspects."

Troy spoke for the first time. "We can't do it until Rodger turns 17."

"The glow was there this morning." She stated.

"We had a relapse." Troy said.

Sherrie howled with laughter.

"It's not funny." I said seriously. "It's hard."

"I'm sure it gets hard," she said, "and often."

With that Sherrie left and we returned to the couch.

I must have drifted off to sleep. I awoke being carried up the stairs by Troy.

He undressed me and slid me under the covers. "I'm going to put my dad to bed." He said leaving the room.

I was back asleep before he returned. Sometime during the night I woke wrapped in his arms with him being spooned behind me. It was my favorite way to be. I went right back to sleep.

Five minutes before the alarm went off I awoke. It was set for 5:00. I was alert immediately. I remembered we had to be at the hospital by 6:00.

I jumped up and got in the shower. I peed in the shower. I didn't have time to fool around this morning. Getting out of the shower, I dried, put deodorant on and went into the bedroom.

I turned the overhead light on. Troy grumbled. I reminded him of his mother waking up around six. He jumped up and went to the bathroom. I dressed and headed downstairs to fix breakfast. It had to be something John could eat cold. The best I could come up with was cold cereal. I knew he would have trouble getting the spoon to his mouth but oh well. I started the coffee.

I went into his room and like Troy he did not want to get up. I gave him a quick wash, put clean clothes on him and was trying to help him out of bed when Troy walked in.

"Just in time." I said. I did not have enough strength to lift John with the cast.

Troy and I decided to grab fast food on the way to the hospital. We didn't want to be late. I fixed John his cereal and told him he was on his own until my mom got there.

We stopped at McD's on the way. I got an egg McMuffin breakfast with orange juice. Troy got four sausage biscuits and a coffee. Mine was gone by the time we were at the hospital. Troy's was still in the bag.

When we got to ICU Keith was sitting at the nurses station looking like he spent the night. It was 5:45.

"Did you go home?" I asked.

He just smiled. He took the coffee from Troy and said, "Thanks."

The look on Troy's face told the story but Keith took it and drank it anyway. Troy stood at the counter and ate his 4 sandwiches. I went around back of the counter and picked up Mary's chart. It only took me a second to figure out which was the coma medication. It was a zero. It was only a few seconds longer for Troy to finish eating. He doesn't eat, he bites and swallows.

"Is it okay to go in?" Troy asked.

"Yes," Doctor Patterson said. "You can try to wake her but she will be groggy for a while."

Going in Troy went to one side and I went to the other. We both kissed her then took a hand. Troy didn't say anything at first. I could tell he was really nervous.

After a few minutes he started. "Hi mom, you're doing much better."

Her eyes flickered but didn't open.

"You awake mom?" Troy asked her.

You could tell she was trying to open her eyes but they wouldn't quite cooperate.

Troy leaned over and kissed her cheek.

Her eyes barely opened. She looked at him but it was a confused look.

Doctor Patterson came in. "I could see her stirring on the monitors. She is going to be dazed for a while. We still don't know if she has any lost memory."

Troy kissed her again. This time I could see a faint smile.

"I think you should stay here today." I told Troy, "I can get my dad to pick me up and take me to school."

"Like you need to be in school." Keith said.

"I haven't missed a day yet." I said.

"You mean this year?"

Troy answered, "No, he means ever."

Keith shook his head and laughed.

"It's important to me." I said.

"Well it would be best for her to rest today." Doctor Patterson said, "She will be more awake and rested by the time you get back from school."

We kissed her goodbye and Troy told her we would be back after school.

On the way to school I asked him, "Will you be able to play this week? You keep missing practice."

"I'll ask coach but I am sure he will want me to play." Troy said, "But I don't know if there are any restrictions on it."

We didn't make it in the cafeteria door when Sherrie jumped up and ran towards us. "Wait, go back outside." She said, "We need to talk."

Once outside she pushed me over to the corner so kids coming in couldn't hear what she was saying.

"You have to get married." She said. "I looked it up online last night. You were right but there is a provision that says unless you are married. So if you are married then they can't charge Troy with rape."

"Really!" I said.

"Really." She said.

"But Texas doesn't allow same sex marriage." Troy said.

Smiling she said, "But Oklahoma does. An hour drive north and you can. It's just you need your parents' permission."

I was elated but my mind said everyone would know I am gay. Would I care what they thought if I was married to Troy? No! Would Troy even want to marry me?

The bell rang so we went in to go to class. I was worthless. Troy said absolutely nothing about it. He doesn't want to marry me. I'll just be married to medicine like Doctor Patterson. I can deal with that. I love how I feel when at the hospital. It's not the same as when I am with Troy but it could be a good second.

I didn't eat lunch. I sat at the table. Everyone talked like normal except me. Sherrie and Troy sat next to each other. One of the guys even wanted to know if something was going on between them. They both smiled but said nothing about it.

I got pissed. I hope nobody picked up on that. That afternoon I was more worthless than in the morning. Troy came in last period to get me to go to the hospital.

I didn't say anything to Troy and he didn't say anything to me. We walked to his car and got in. He didn't open the door for me like he normally did. I slammed the door after getting in myself.

We were pulling into the parking lot when Troy finally said, "Coach said I can play... that it was up to me."

I had no reply. I could care less if he played or not. I walked ahead of Troy as we went in and made our way up to ICU. Troy went straight to Mary's room. I went behind the nurses' counter and checked her chart. I was surprised they were allowing liquids.

I hurried to her room. Troy was holding her hand and talking a mile a minute to her. She was not talking back. She had a blank look. When I came in her eyes turned to me. She had the start of a smile but then went back to the blank look and her eyes went back to Troy. He told her about school, about football, about his dad.

"Dad will be in to see you as soon as the doctor lets him. He's at home with this gigantic cast on and he is grumpier than an old bear being woken in the middle of winter." He said, "Oh, coach said it was his policy not to let a player play if he misses practice but under the circumstances he left it up to me if I wanted to play or not."

Doctor Patterson came in. "How's our patient?"

Mary looked at him, gave the brief smile she gave me and then looked back to Troy. I could tell she knew who he was and that was a good sign.

"Can we bring John in to see her?" I asked.

"I think that would be good for both of them." Doctor Patterson replied. "But he needs to be in a wheel chair from when he gets here until you put him back in the car."

"Let's go have supper then Troy," I said, "Then we can bring your dad back tonight."

We both kissed Mary goodbye. She squeezed my hand. My biggest concern was she was not talking. It didn't seem like she was even trying. Did she understand what we were saying? I think so because of her reaction about her leg hurting.

The marriage thing popped into my head again. Troy still had not said anything about it. I could feel myself getting choked up and tears form in my eyes. I swallowed hard and drove the thought from my mind. Troy didn't even notice I was upset.

We have a Dominoes that has a call ahead drive thru. I called and ordered the pizza. We picked it up and went home.

They wanted to eat watching ESPN. I insisted we eat at the dining room table. I wanted to fix a salad. They didn't want salad so I did not.

"After we eat," I said, "We need to give you a bath."

"I don't need one." John replied.

"You stink." Troy said.

"I don't care." John said.

"So you don't want to go see mom?" Troy said.

"REALLY!" John said, "Keith said I could?"

"Doctor Patterson said he thought it would be good for both of you." I said.

John started eating faster. He tried to keep up with Troy but that was impossible.

We finished the pizza and Troy cleaned up (throwing the pizza box and paper plates away) while I took John to his room to give him his bath. It went pretty well except when I did his crotch area. He got a hard on that wouldn't go away.

"Do you want me to fix that?" I asked.

"No, no NO!" he stammered. "I, I uh, I'll just suffer with it."

I had to laugh. He was bright red with embarrassment.

Troy came in. "What the hell's going on?"

John tried to cover up. I laughed harder.

Together we got him dressed and out to the car. When we got to the hospital I ran in and brought a wheelchair out. He didn't want it but I told him he had to, that was the only way they would let him in.

Troy parked while I wheeled him to the elevator. Troy came running in just as the door opened.

I went into the room first followed by John in the wheelchair and Troy pushing it. They had Mary's head lifted slightly. Her eyes were open. I could tell when she spotted John. The slight smile came and remained. She didn't take her eyes off of him.

Troy wheeled him over next to the bed. He tried to get up but Troy stopped him.

"I don't think you should stand." I said. I don't know why because he stood and walked around the house some.

He gave me that look. Then he sat back and took her hand in his. He kissed her fingers. Her smile was bigger.

Neither one said anything. They held each other's hand and maintained eye contact. They said nothing but a thousand words were expressed between them.

Troy and I stood there watching. I don't know about Troy but I was amazed by what I was witnessing.

A nurse came in and said, "She needs to rest. You can come back tomorrow."

We kissed her goodbye, John kissing her hand, and left. I looked at the clock in the lobby and couldn't believe it. It seemed like we were there for a few minutes but it had been two hours. No wonder the nurse told us she needed her rest.

Troy ran ahead and brought the car to the hospital entrance. We helped John in and Troy did his seatbelt while I returned the wheelchair.

As we drove off John said, "I'm so sorry I did that to her."

"It's not your fault dad."

"I should have seen it coming."

"There is no way you could have known he was running the red light."

John was quiet and somber the rest of the way home. We helped him get ready and into bed. It was like moving dead weight around.

I decided to move back to the spare bedroom. I could tell Troy felt dejected but under the circumstances I thought it would be best for both of us. I had a cold and lonely feeling as I lay in bed. Of course my thoughts went back to Troy not saying anything about marriage. I couldn't get to sleep.

All on its own, my dick got hard. I got Kleenex from the dresser, got back in bed and jacked off. It wasn't a good climax but I did ejaculate. I went to sleep shortly after that.

Maybe tomorrow will be better.
