The nature of a truly desperate heart - Chapter 11

Tommy

I was on cloud nine, even if I was working, I was engaged to the most wonderful man, I loved him, he loved me, my parents approved, we were happy, nothing could ruin this for us.

The phone blinked, waking me up from my daydream, I thought it was a client.

"Campbell & Williams, Law Firm, how can I help you?"

"Thomas, we need to talk."

"Who's speaking?"

"It's Allan, we need to talk."

"Allan, I have no desire to talk to you."

"Please, listen to me."

"Say it quick, I have work to do."

"I love you, we need to be together."

"No we don't, Allan, I don't love you, I understand now that I never did, I liked the fact I had a boyfriend, but there was no love, and I know this because, now, I really am in love."

"Come on, Tom, we are perfect for each other."

"The fact that you keep calling me Tom, even after I told you a million times I don't like it, proves that we are not perfect for each other. If that's what you wanted to talk about, I'd say this talk is over."

"Thomas, please, you can't do this to me, I need you."

"No, you need a sugar daddy, not me."

"But, we were great together in bed."

"It wasn't bad, but I do have better now."

"Can we please go on a date, and fall in love again, please Tom."

"I'm not even going to tell you I hate that, this talk is over, and no, we can't go on a date, because I don't want to and because I'm engaged, so please, leave me alone."

"You can't be engaged, it's been only a few months."

"You really have nothing to do with that, but yes, as of yesterday I'm engaged, and I couldn't be happier, so I'll say it again, leave me alone, or I will file a no contact order."

I disconnected the call, not even waiting for his reply, the phone blinked again, I answered as if it was any client, even though I was raging.

"Campbell & Williams, Law Firm, how can I help you?"

"Hello, my dearest fiance, how are you?"

"Matt, I love hearing your voice, why didn't you called my cell?"

"Because I'm looking at it."

"I didn't even realized I had forgotten it, can you bring it to me, I might get calls on it."

"That's why I'm calling, you had 3 missed calls when I heard it ring. Do you have court today?"

"I don't, I'll be at the firm all day."

"Then I'll take you your cell, and we can have lunch together."

"Yes, I'd love that. I love you."

"And I love you, I'll be there in 40 minutes, your parents will take care of the bar."

Over lunch I told Matt about my call with Allan, the calls on my cell were all from him, Matt laughed when I told him about the date. We talked about the wedding and decided to have it on the one year anniversary of when we met, we also decided in no best man in either part, it was going to be just a simple wedding with about 10 guest, that would be my parents, the 4 bartenders, the cook and her helper, Joe and Tessa, and Mitch, who would be our ring bearer. I decided not to invite my sister and Matt had no desire of inviting any of his family.

The rest of the week and the week after were normal, nothing more happened and Allan didn't called again. On the weekend between the weeks the parents went home and made the final move to the apartment and put the house for sale with all the furniture, they only brought their personal things and a few things that had special meaning. I also went home and brought some of the things I wanted to keep, from what my parents told me, my sister did the same.

The next week went normal again, nothing happened, we had everything for the wedding taken care of, so we just needed to wait and do the final touch ups closer to the date, we still had 7 months. That weekend we would stay with Mitch, Joe and Tessa, along with his parents were traveling that week, they left after giving me the papers for the power of attorney in behalf of Mitch. My parents made the command decision of taking control of the bar for the weekend, so me and Matt could play daddies for Mitch, not worrying about the bar. They said it would serve us as "training for the future".

On Sunday night our world was rocked again, Matt and I were having dinner and trying to feed Mitch when my dad came in the house, he looked pale and upset, I was afraid something had happened to my mom. He just sat in the living room and turned on the TV, there was a special about a plane crash, the list of passengers was being divulged. In that list there were the names of Joe, Tessa, and his parents, they all died in the crash, along with all the 300 plus passengers and crew members, no one survived.

I looked at Matt and just like me he had tears in his eyes, I was glad that Mitch couldn't understand what was happening. After the initial shock, I started to think, I had to keep the firm open, because we had a few cases going to court, I talked to all Joe's clients and let them choose if they wanted to keep dealing with the firm, or find a new lawyer, most decided to stay, so I needed to hire a new lawyer, although it would be hard for me, not only because Joe was my best friend, but because I didn't want to think about replacing him.

We had all the funerals, and dealt with all the legal stuff, and since Joe and Tessa's will was very direct, I was now officially the adoptive father of Mitch, the insurance money was put on an account in Mitch name, it was his, when he reached adult age, and it would pay his college expenses. I was numb for the whole month this was happening, and I was glad that I had Matt and my parents with me, they supported me in every possible way.

Matt

This last month was awful, Tommy seemed distant, I know what's like to lose a best friend, truth be told, mine didn't die, she just disappeared of my life, but I could imagine the feeling being almost the same, harder in Tommy's case because nothing can bring his best friend back, and because it was not a choice. He went to work, came home, took care of Mitch, and went to bed with me, we snuggled every night in bed and I just showed him my support, after that month, Tommy slowly came back to life, he was starting to be himself again.

"Tommy, tomorrow is Saturday, I asked the parents to take care of the bar without us."

"Why?"

"Because we need to do some shopping."

"What do you mean? What kind of shopping?"

"Well, now that we have a son, we need to decorate his room, so that's one, and his clothes are getting small, so that's two, and we need to see the suits for the wedding, so that's three, and finally, we need a big banana split, one that can feed two hunks and our son."

"Our son?"

"Tommy, in six months we'll be married, I love you, and I love Mitch, so I would love for him to be our son, not just your son."

"I love you, Matt. I thought about that, but I didn't knew how to ask you if you wanted to stay with me, now that all this happened."

"Tommy, I love you, I would never leave you, and will never let you leave. I've been taking care of Mitch in the mornings, and we've been bonding."

"Matt, take me to bed and make love to me, I need you tonight. Let's just see how our son is doing, and then we'll go to bed."

Mitch was sleeping soundly, so we turned on the baby monitor and went to bed, after we showed each other how much we love one another it was time to sleep, Mitch would be awake at 7 ready to eat, and we needed to do our shopping.

We got into a routine, in the morning Tommy went to work and I went shopping for the bar with the help of my father-in-law, while my mother-in-law took care of Mitch. When we got back I took care of Mitch until dinner time, while the in-laws took care of the bar, when Tommy was back from work we had our time together and with Mitch, we had dinner together, then Tommy and I would go to the bar and the in-laws prepared Mitch for bed, Tommy went home and took Mitch to bed after one-on-one time, and the in-laws went home, at midnight I closed the bar and went to Tommy, we talked about our day or had extra curricular activities and went to bed. Everything worked as a well oiled machine. And then arrived the date for Tommy's sister wedding, it was the Sunday before, and of course I wasn't invited.

"Tommy, you should go, it's your sister, I'll stay home with Mitch."

"No, I'm not going without my family."

"I love you for saying that, but I still think you should go."

"And I'm still not going, if you're not invited, neither am I, we are one."

"You know, I really love you, even if you are stubborn."

"I love you too, now, let's see what our son is doing, he's too silent."

When we checked on Mitch he was playing with blocks, so we didn't need to worry, we just laid on the floor and played with him. We only had three more months to our wedding. After lunch the in-laws came to our apartment, and of course the wedding was the conversation theme. Tommy's mother started.

"So Tommy, have you decided what to do about your sister's wedding?"

"I'm not going without my family, if my fiance and son aren't invited, neither am I"

"Matt, what do you have to say about that?"

"I love Tommy and will always stay by his side, I tried to convince him to go, but he made his mind, so I'll support him in that decision."

"He did mom, we were talking about it before lunch, I know Matt doesn't like my decision, but he accepted it."

"Don't worry son, your mother and I are only going because it's mandatory, we are not liking Samantha's position, and we fought several times about it."

"Do you think it's because we didn't invite her to our wedding? I told Tommy I wouldn't mind having her here for the day, but we decided to have a very small gathering, as you know."

"It can't be that Matt, she doesn't know your wedding date, as far as she knows she can still receive the invitation for a date 2 years away. I believe she only invited Thomas because it's her brother, and her fiance's family wouldn't appreciate the cut off from the wedding."

"That's what I'm thinking also, I'll always love my sister, but she is just a distant relative now."

"Ok boys, enough with that, what do you have planned for tonight? There is a carnival in town, and we thought we should all take Mitch there. What do you think?"

"Sounds good, we could have dinner there, I'm sure Mitch will enjoy one night without baby food."

We laid Mitch in our bed, so he could have a nap, so he wouldn't be too tired for the carnival, of course we took to opportunity to paint the shower walls and still nap a little with our boy. We got dressed and dressed Mitch and off we went to the carnival. Mitch wanted a hotdog, we all laughed at the mess he made eating it, but he enjoyed it, so it was great. He loved the rides and had fun, we took silly pictures and would made an album with them, I picked one that the 5 of us looked awful in a comic way, and framed it for the bar.

Mitch had started to call both of us daddy, but he had different ways of calling us, so we always knew who he wanted. The next weekend was his 3rd birthday and we were having a small party, of course it would be on the Sunday, since the wedding would be on Saturday, and all the bar staff was invited, they all loved when we took Mitch to the bar. The week went great, on Sunday we had everything ready for the party in the bar, since doing it in the apartment would be too tight.
