The nature of a truly desperate heart - Chapter 12
Tommy
The birthday party was going great, I missed Joe and tessa, I actually cried when we sang happy birthday, because I remembered the day Mitch was born, 3 years ago, me and Joe both assisted to the birth, I had to hold Joe so we wouldn't faint, he was so emotional, it was the best day of his life, and although Tessa was on pain and tired, I could see nothing had ever made her so happy. Nothing was said about my sister's wedding during the party, but when it ended, and after all the cleanup, I asked.
"So, how was the wedding."
"Very boring, no one danced, Daniel's family is very uptight, they didn't allowed singing or dancing, the background music was very plain. The family all left early."
"Did she made any comments about me not going?"
"Yes, she said you did what she was expecting you did, but she actually looked sad about it."
"If she was sad about, she should of invited Matt and Mitch, she knows we're engaged, and she knows I adopted Mitch."
"I agree, but there's nothing we can do about it now. Talking about happier things, we're three months away from your wedding, how's everything going?"
"We have everything ready, we just need to do the last fitting on the suits, and Tommy needs to pick up a tie, since we'll be having two different colors, and we need to wait for the last two weeks to finish Mitch suit."
"I already picked a tie, I forgot to tell you, Matt, when we were cleaning Joe and Tessa house, I found the tie he used on his wedding, that's the one I'll be using."
Of course everyone had teary eyes, but I wanted to feel their presence, just like doing the wedding at the bar to feel Matt's dad with us.
The next two months flew, we did the fittings, and of course Mitch's suit had to wait a bit more, because he was growing fast, he almost looked like a four year old, and he was only three, we had to leave it for a few more weeks. The only strange thing that happened was that we were getting calls, both on the apartment and at the bar, but no one talked. We shrugged it off as pranks, I wanted to do something about it, but Matt said it wasn't worth it. At one point I thought it was Allan, that was something he would do, even though he didn't contact me in the last few months, I was actually afraid it was him, but if that was the case, why wasn't he reaching me at the firm, we still had the same office and same phone number.
I tried to stop worrying, but I still thought something bad was going to happen, we were so happy, I didn't want anything to mess things up, we were one month away from the wedding, we decided that we would go on our honeymoon later, since I had several cases that were due to court, Mitch was staying with my parents, because school would be starting soon, we wanted him to socialize with other children, so he was going to be on preschool three mornings in the week, my mom was trying to teach him how to read and write his own name, he was developing nicely both physically and psychologically.
A few weeks later we finally got everything together for the wedding, I took a few days off to help Matt with last minute details, the bar was decorated with a few flowers, we had the justice of peace to perform the ceremony, a team of cooks was ready to cook the meal, the cake had been delivered, Mitch suit was perfect and so was ours. We were in the last 24 hours before the wedding, we had everything ready to go, and I was nervous.
I was nervous because I still thought something bad would happen, the calls hadn't fully stopped although they were less frequent, I was afraid that my sister or Allan would try to do something in our day. I was nervous thinking there was something that I somehow had forgotten to do, although our checklist was completely done. And I was nervous because I was marrying the man of my dreams.
Finally the day arrived, we got dressed and dressed Mitch, he was ready to deliver the wedding rings, we had rehearsed what he had to do. We gathered at the bar, everyone was present and having a good time. The justice of peace performed the ceremony, we exchanged our vows, Mitch was perfect delivering the rings, when he delivered them we both kissed him and he set of running to his grandma's lap, my mom smiled that he chose her, he usually raned to my dad.
We were finally married, no one could ever undo that, I was relieved that nothing had happened. The reception was going well, everyone was enjoying the food and the music, the DJ had a karaoke set for the guest to sing, Matt and I were, of course, challenged to sing, which we did, but since we were both so bad, no one challenged again, mom, of course, made a show, she was a great singer, my dad, not so much, the bar staff wasn't bad. Even our Justice of Peace, whom had stayed for the reception sang, he was quite good in singing, he and my mother made an amazing duet, if I didn't know they had just met, I'd say they were singing together for years. Everyone was having a blast, and Mitch had all the attention he wanted, he was like the star. He was playing and trying to sing along with the adults, it was fun to watch.
And then, when I finally thought that nothing could happen, it did. The police entered the bar, carrying a baby, asking to speak with Matt, since they had his son with them. Everyone was speechless, no one knew what was happening, Matt didn't had any son, and he didn't got any girl pregnant, that I was sure.
Matt
I couldn't believe I was married to the man I loved, we were so happy, he had his glow back, he had lost it for a few months, after Joe and Tessa died, but it was back, I was happy our wedding could give that back to him, I loved him so much, nothing could ruin this moment. Or so I thought, I think I almost collapsed when the police entered the bar holding a newly born baby, saying it was my son. It was impossible I never in my life had sex with a woman, and sure enough not in the last nine months.
"I'm Matthew Simmons, but I can assure you I am not that baby's father."
"Sir, we are only here to deliver this child to his father, and I can assure you, you are registered as the baby's father. There is a letter for you too."
I had to sit down, I thought I was dreaming, and my dream had turned into a nightmare, Tommy sat by my side, and together we read the letter.
"Hi Matt,
This is Andrew, your son. Well, he's your son now. I'm sorry I haven't talked to you personally, I called your apartment and the bar, but I couldn't gather the courage to speak. I wanted to ask for your help, but I didn't know how.
After uncle Samuel died, the family made me think everything was your fault, that you had killed him to keep the family away from what was rightfully theirs, they presented "proofs" and I, being stupid, believed.
Then I got pregnant out of wedlock, and the family did to me the same thing they did to you. The baby's father disappeared as soon as I told him I was pregnant, I was left alone, and all I could think about was you, and how I was wrong leaving you.
Last month my doctor found a lump in my heart, and informed me that there was no way he could save both the baby and my life, I chose to save the baby, in his bag you'll find his birth certificate and my death certificate.
I want my son to grow happy and in a warming family, through a friend I found you are getting married with a great man, I hope he can accept my son as his too, if, of course, you want to keep him. That was why when I filled the forms I put you has the baby's father. I know you can give him the life and love he deserves.
Again, I'm really sorry for everything, I know it will be hard for you to ever forgive me, but please, take care of my son as it was your own, if you choose to not keep him, believe me, I won't judge you.
I love you. Your cousin Louise."
I couldn't believe this was happening, I was shaking and staring at the baby, I have no news from my cousin for five years, and now I find that she is dead and left me the only thing she had to give. In that moment I forgave everything, I couldn't stay mad at her for leaving me alone, she was also alone. I should have accepted Tommy's suggestion about doing something about the calls. Tommy had taken me to the apartment so we could be alone for a few minutes.
"Tommy, I was wrong, we should have seen what the calls were about, if we did, maybe I could have reached her soon enough."
"Matt, stop that, it was not your fault. Even if we did found it was her, there is no guarantee that we could have reached her. Don't blame yourself."
"What am I going to do?"
"We are going to raise this child the best we can."
"We?"
"Of course, we, there is no way I'm leaving the task of raising our sons to my husband all alone, plus, Mitch needed a brother."
"I love you, Tommy."
"And I love you, my most perfect husband."
When we got back to the bar everyone was pampering the children, Mitch was trying to hold the baby. When he saw us he came running to us and jumped to Tommy's arms.
"Daddys, is the baby gonna be my brother?"
"Would you like him to be?"
"Yes, I need someone to play with, it's boring alone, and you are too big."
"But Mitch, he's too little to play."
"He is now, but he will grow up, like me."
"But that's gonna take some time, Mitch."
"That's ok, I can wait."
That was the last stone in our path, if Mitch was ok with having a brother, and officially this baby was my son, there was nothing we could do. That would only mean I had to take all the furniture of the room I used as office to turn it into a nursery, and later room for Andrew. Our guest started to leave, the help we hired was going to take care of the cleanup, so we went home, the in-laws came with us, I knew they wanted to talk. Dad started.
"Boys, the first thing you need to do is the adoption papers, Matt, you need to officially adopt Mitch, and Tommy, you need to adopt Andrew."
"Dad, why would we need that?"
"Because the boys need to be protected if, god forbid, something happens to one of you. Plus, next week we're changing our will to include all grandsons, even if they're not yet born. Since you are married, both your boys will be included."
"Don't worry dad, I'll take care of it as soon as I get back to work, now, if you please, take the children with you home, their daddys need to consummate the wedding."
"Tommy, that is no way to talk in front of a lady."
"Mommy dearest, I know you just wanted me to invite you to stay, since that's not happening, I want to be alone with my husband for the night."
"Fine, you win this time, go consummate, we'll take our grandchildren to safety."
They left, and as soon as we were alone we consummated really good our marriage, I was glad that both Tommy and I wouldn't be working for the next three days.
