The nature of a truly desperate heart - Chapter 13
Tommy
The next day we slept in late, mom stayed with the kids and dad went shopping for the bar, we stayed in bed and consummated again the wedding, we went to take a shower and consummated again, and finally went to have lunch with the parents. After lunch the parents stayed at the bar, and we went shopping, we needed a full nursery for the baby, some clothes, more formula, we bought a few more things to Mitch, since we didn't want him to feel left out, and bought a few toys for both of them.
We had the biggest things getting delivered later in the day and were full of shopping bags, when we found Allan. At first we didn't see him, but he sure saw us.
"Tom, you look good."
"I don't know if I ever said this to you, but I really hate being called Tom."
"Yea, sure. So, it's been a few months, can we talk about getting back together?"
"Allan, we are not getting back together, ever. Since you didn't got the message, let me introduce you to my husband, Matt, and our sons Mitch and Andrew. Now, do you get the message?"
"I'm not going to stop trying."
"Yes, you will, or you'll be served with a no contact order and something worse if I can arrange for it, don't you ever forget I'm a good lawyer, a few words well spread and you'll be in misery."
"You'll regret this, bye."
I was glad he left, I just wanted to enjoy my family, I had the perfect family, a wonderful husband, two beautiful children, it was everything I needed, this was perfect, I finally had the life I always wanted, I was happy, I felt good, I felt complete. I looked at my three men, and knew that nothing would ever replace this feeling. Then I heard something and felt a burning in my stomach, and that's the last thing I remember.
Matt
We were sharing a look, looking at our boys, life finally felt perfect, and then I heard a gun and Tommy fell on the ground, there was blood everywhere, Tommy had been shot, I looked around it was Allan, he still had the gun in his hand, some guy grabbed him, while someone called the police, I heard the sirens I was holding the kids, I had to protect them, but I couldn't leave Tommy. I didn't know what to do. I had to think, I asked the police officer to call the bar, I needed the in-laws, and I needed them now. One of the police cruisers took Allan, the other took me and the boys to the hospital, the in-laws were going to meet us there. This couldn't be happening, it just couldn't, both boys were crying, I was doing my best to keep them calm, I finally saw the in-laws, they came running to me, Mitch jumped to his grandpa's lap, and mom took Andrew from me, they were finally calming down.
"What happened?"
"Allan, we were shopping with the boys, he saw us, he tried to talk to Tommy, but Tommy told him to leave, he left, and the next thing I knew he was shooting Tommy. Mom I can't lose him."
"Matt, everything will be fine. What's happening here?"
"I don't know, no one told me anything since we arrived."
"I'll try to find out, stay here, Jack, stay with the boys, I'll see what I can find."
"Dad, someone needs to take the boys home, but I can't leave, I need to stay here."
"Don't worry Matt, I'll take the boys home as soon as Margaret comes back with news."
I was watching the clock, it looked stopped, I saw the clock clicking, and the time passing, but it seemed like time had stopped, I wanted to scream and cry, but I couldn't, I had to be strong for my sons, I needed Tommy, I needed him to raise this boys with me, I needed him in my life, I couldn't lose him. Mom finally came back, it had been only five minutes.
"He's still in surgery, they said that as soon as it's over the doctor will come talk to us. Jack, please take the boys home, they must be tired and hungry."
"Dad, the nursery furniture will be delivered today, I'm sorry to lay this on you, when they get there, tell them to out everything in the room that was the office, I'll take care of the rest later."
Dad left with the boys, I stayed with mom, I finally broke, I cried while she hugged me, she had tears in her eyes, it was her son, and yet, she was playing strong for me. The time passed slowly, I was becoming desperate, no one told us anything, I needed my husband to be ok, I needed him, I couldn't lose him.
Three hours had passed, we were doing hourly updates to dad, calling him, just to tell him that we didn't had any news, and to ask about the boys. The boys were sleeping, Mitch was nervous, he didn't fully understand what was happening, but he knew it wasn't good.
Finally five hours later the doctor showed up, he looked tired, and still had blood in his scrub, I just hoped he had good news.
"The surgery was successful, we are hoping for a full and fast recovery. We had to repair the part of the intestine that was damaged, but we are positive that Thomas will have a good recovery."
That was all I needed to hear, I fell to the ground, the last strength I had left my body when I finally took a breath, my husband was going to be ok. The next thing I knew I had two nurses by my side, giving me sugar. I was still covered in blood, I wanted to stay, but the doctor and mom convinced me to go home, Tommy was in recovery and couldn't have visitors, and I had two boys at home that needed me. I went home, relieved that Tommy was going to be ok.
Allan was charged with attempted murder, illegal possession of a gun, and public endangerment, the judge had sentenced him to 20 years of jail without bail. It had been three days, and Tommy still hadn't woken up. I went to the hospital every day, and stayed in his room the whole time I was allowed. The in-laws had been there too, but they took the responsibility of taking care of the bar, mom had brought the kids, I was sleeping in the chair with both boys sleeping on my chest when I heard something.
"Isn't that a beautiful sight."
Mitch had woken up with me, he jumped when he saw his daddy awake. He jumped in bed and hugged Tommy, I was crying, he was finally awake. Andrew was still sleeping in my arms, I kissed Tommy. I called the doctor to check Tommy and called the in-laws to tell them Tommy was awake, they came to the hospital right away. The doctor made the check up, and told us Tommy would stay in the hospital a few more days, to be sure he had a complete recovery, and after that he was to stay at home for, at least, one month before going back to work.
We told Tommy what had happened, and what Allan sentence was, I could see he was relieved he didn't had to worry about Allan anymore. The week after, Tommy stayed at the hospital, but everyone could see that he wanted to go home. When we finally took him home, he didn't want to rest, we had to threaten him that we would take him back to the hospital, it was the only way to keep him in bed, he was to only leave the bed to eat and go to the bathroom for the first two weeks. He stayed in bed and usually had Mitch and Andrew with him, that made him not care all that much he was stuck in bed, but he still wanted to get up.
Tommy
I was glad I was still alive, Allan wouldn't be a problem anymore, I filled the no contact order, so he couldn't call me or even send letters from jail, if he did, his sentence would be elongated. It was hard to stay in bed all the time, but I had to, everyone was taking care of me, even Mitch was telling me that if I got up from bed he wasn't going to play with me, I laughed, my own son was threatening me, and I had to obey.
We took care of all the adoption procedures so both Mitch and Andrew had legally two dads, Matt changed the ownership of the building to the two of us, and changed his will to leave the building to the boys. It took a near death experience, but my sister finally accepted me for who I am, she even apologized to us for not inviting Matt and Mitch to the wedding. She became a great sister and great aunt.
The next few weeks everything went back to normal, we eventually had our honeymoon. We started having our holidays together in my parents lake house, except for new year's, which we always made at the bar, and even Daniel's family came. My sister had twins later in the year, due to a problem she had to remove her uterus, but she didn't mind, she had all that she needed, a boy and a girl, Mitch was very protective of his brother and cousins, if some stranger even got close to the children he would start asking questions in a loud voice, to get adult attention.
All the children grew up, Mitch became a lawyer, he wanted to eventually be a judge. Andrew became a doctor, he specialised in obstetrics, he wanted to help women that had the same problems has his mother had. We had told both of them about their birth parents, so they knew how we became their dads. They both fell in love with great girls and married, and had children, we now had 3 grandchildren, 2 girls and a boy.
Samantha's children, Mark and Melissa turned great kids, Mark became a pilot, he loved planes all his life, so when it was time to choose a life path, no one was surprised when he chose to go to the air force and become a pilot, he loved it and was happy, he came out as gay, found a great guy and got married. Melissa had problems with her first husband, he was abusive, Mitch being the protective kind, got them divorced and was able to find proofs of financial fraud against the guy, and put him in jail. Melissa fell in love with Mitch's assistant and was finally happy, she was a special Ed teacher, she and her husband ended up adopting two autistic girls, she was sterile so she couldn't have children of her own, she also became a foster parent. She and her husband were great parents.
The parents had died a few months after Melissa's second wedding, first it was dad, and a few months later mom, we all suffered with the loss, but we were happy that they had lived a full life and got to see all the grandkids happy, it was all they wished. We continued having all parties and family gatherings in the lake house, we were a close family, and everything was great.
I always looked back to the day I accidentally entered the bar, that day was the beginning of everything I always wanted of my life. And now, all these years later, I would do nothing differently.
The end.
