The nature of a truly desperate heart - Chapter 3

Thomas

I was actually happy, I was moving into a new place, I had found someone that could be a great friend, and I needed that right now. I just didn't understand why I was thinking like this, less than 2 days ago I was making plans with Allan and now I couldn't picture him in my life and a sense of relief came through me. I need to stop thinking like this.

I was looking at all the stuff I had to unpack, I started with the groceries and started making lunch while talking to Matt, my phone started buzzing and I picked it up without looking by force of habit.

"Hello."

"Thomas, it's me, where the hell are you? I called your office you weren't there, I called your home, you weren't there. I stopped by and all the pictures and clothes disappeared, only a few of my things were there. I demand to know where you are." Allan said almost yelling.

I grabbed Matt's hand, I didn't want him to leave, I needed his strength.

"You demand nothing, we're not together anymore, so you have no right to demand a goddamn thing. I moved out, and you have nothing to know about that. I already called my landlord and told him that I moved and left nothing of my own in the house. If you want your stuff go pick it up or the landlord will get rid of it, your choice. And please, don't contact me again." I said trying to sound calm, but feeling the strength leave my body.

I could feel arms around me, it was Matt, he could sense that I was about to fall, and grabbed me giving me the strength I needed to stay up. We finished cooking and ate in silence.

"You can really cook, I think it was a long time since I had some good homemade food." Matt said, maybe he was just trying to end the silence.

"It's not that good, but thanks for the compliment."

"I'm not just trying to make you feel better, you know. It really is good, I always speak my mind, if it wasn't good I would tell you so."

I looked up and he was smiling, I knew he was telling the truth and a warm shiver went through me knowing that.

"Thanks." I said smiling and actually feeling a bit better.

I called my secretary and told her I was taking the week off because of personal problems, and to reschedule all my appointments to next week. If Allan called she was to tell that I wasn't available and that I wouldn't say when I would be back to work. I could do that, I was a lawyer, but had no urgent cases opened. I was 50% partner in the firm, along with my best friend, I needed to call him and let him know what was happening.

Matt had excused himself saying he had to go to the bar, he invited me to pop up later. I called Joe and told him what had happened in the last 48 hours including me moving into a new place. I told him all about what Allan had said and done, and I told him a few things about Matt. I invited Joe and his wife to dinner so they could meet my new place, and to bring Mitchell with them. Mitchell was their son, and my godson, he was 2 years old and was the greatest and prettiest boy in the world.

That's when I remembered, I didn't know the address for this place nor the name of the bar. I said that to Joe and he just laughed.

"Always with your head in the moon, Tommy, what am I going to do with you?"

"Joe, if it weren't you I would say to shove the Tommy in some dark place. What can I say, you know me, I don't think all the steps like you, I follow my heart. And you should appreciate that, or you wouldn't have your nice wife and son." I laughed as I recalled that they met because I insisted in taking him with me to a pride parade, Tessa was there with her lesbian cousin and her girlfriend.

"I'll get the address and text you." I said as i disconnected the call to go to the bar. Since I had private entrance I had to go outside to enter the bar. I looked up and saw the name "esses".

I got in and Matt was talking with three girls and a guy. The guy looked at me and with almost anger in his eyes spoke with me

"Can't you read? We're closed, we only open at 4pm." I just stood there, not knowing what to do or say, but Matt stepped forward.

"Everyone this is Thomas, he's living in the apartment upstairs from mine, he's not only a customer but also a friend. Anthony I told you before, your attitude had to improve, this tells me you're not listening, so you're fired. Get your things and get out." Matt spoke in such a calm way that even I was afraid.

This Anthony guy left saying nothing, he probably was warned several times and because of me he was fired. I must have looked frightened, because Matt came to me.

"Don't worry, he was on probation for mistreating customers and smoking in my kitchen while handling the food. No one mistreats my friends and gets away with it, plus, all the girls are happy, he was always trying to flirt with them." I smiled listening to that, I felt better.

"Now we have a problem, you'll have to cook, because I fired my cook." He said smiling at me with a hint of mock in his voice.

"What? I'm not a chef or a cook, what would I need to do?"

"Just fries and deep fried chicken wings, we don't serve dinners, only snacks."

"Ok, I can do that." I turned to leave, but then remembered what I came down to do. "Matt, what's the address for this place? I asked my best friend for dinner, but I don't know the address."

He told me the address and I saved it in my address book. Because I was curious I asked why the bar was named "esses".

"My dad's name was Samuel, and our last name is Simmons, so it was Samuel Simmons and Son, he had several drawings of the letter S in all this paper sheets, some alone, some in pairs and in three's. I was 5 and asked him what the esses' were about, he just told me it was nothing, but that I had given him the bar's name. And that's why it's called esses'."

I smiled as he told me the story, I could see happiness in his eyes while he remembered that. Everything about this guy was making me smile.

Matt

I couldn't believe I actually told the guy to cook and he was okay with that, my ex would laugh in my face and leave me talking to myself. This Thomas is a lawyer, he took a week of work to handle his life and yet he accepted to cook for my bar. I fell a little more in love with him.

I showed him everything he needed in the kitchen and left Anna with him, since she was the kitchen help. Mary and Claire started getting things ready in the bar for our customers, if it was like most days we would have a rush of people between 5 and 7 pm and it was already 4pm, so I had to open the doors.

I went to the kitchen and saw that everything was ready, if it was possible Thomas was hot even with the apron and net in his head, I was falling head over heels with this guy, and I just wished it was returned, although he didn't gave away any signs of that.

"Thomas, why don't you like to be called Tom?" I asked when we were alone, since Anna was taking care of the deliveries of bread and other daily deliveries.

"In school everyone picked on me calling me peeping tom, so I started hating the name. My best friend and parents call me Tommy, you can too if you want."

He blushed again which made me smile, but I decided that Tommy was definitely better than Thomas, so I thanked him for consider me close enough to call him that.

The day was busy in the bar, so I couldn't spend much time near Tommy, although I really wanted, customers came and went, and more than one actually complimented the food saying it was better than before and telling me to never let the new cook go. I just answered that I was hoping I could keep him, of course not letting on that I wanted him inside and outside of the kitchen.

The girls were gone so it was just me and Tommy in the bar, we were closing and cleaning a few things, and I was telling him what the customers had said. I had tasted all the food so I knew what I was talking about.

"You know, you could quit your big lawyer job and be a chef, you're quite good in the kitchen, or at least with pancakes and chicken wings." I said laughing.

"My mom taught me how to cook, she's a great cook, she worked in a restaurant all the way through school to pay tuition, so she learned a lot." he said smiling.

I could see he really loved his parents, and in that moment I wished my dad was still alive, since I never met my mom I couldn't miss her, but I sure did missed my dad.

Since the bar was already locked Tommy came up with me, so he could go to his apartment through mine, I wanted to hold him and not let him go upstairs, I wanted his company, but I couldn't ask for it, not yet, it was too soon. I took him to the door and wanted to kiss him, but I suppressed that desire and said a simple goodnight.

The next few days were a repeat, after breakfast he came downstairs, we would go shopping, had lunch and worked the night away at the bar. We interviewed several cooks to take his place, all had to provide a sample of what they could do with our small menu, and finally agreed in a good replacement, I didn't want to hire her, not because she wasn't good, but because that would mean Tommy would spend less time with me.

Saturday would be the last day he was working with me, being Sunday our rest day, he invited his best friend to dinner in that Sunday and told me to come too, he wanted me to meet his family away from his family. Of course I said yes, even if I tried I couldn't say no to him, I was hopelessly in love. I later found out that he had already talked about me with his friends and parents, and all wanted to meet me, that made me happy, at least he wasn't embarrassed of me, but that didn't mean that he wanted more than a friendship.

This week had been great, we talked, we laughed, we got to know each other, I didn't wanted to end, but Sunday arrived, and I felt sad, I wanted to keep the rhythm of the last few days, the only ones I was actually happy with the life I had chosen, I was happy because I was sharing it with him. I was in love with him, there was no turning back now.

Sunday afternoon I went to help him cook for his friends, when they arrived they greeted me as they already met me, I wasn't a stranger for them, I was another friend, I was glad they felt that way, my reasoning being that, if they liked me they wouldn't try to convince Tommy to find another place to live. Stupid, I know. And their son was pretty cute, when he saw Tommy he ran for his arms and hugged him, it was such a beautiful scene, if I wasn't already in love with Tommy that would be enough to fall for him.
