Chapter #5
All I could think off while Curtis ate was how my life had changed in just six short weeks. A young living Adonis had walked into my store, we went too bed together and then he disappeared. All I knew was that he lived with an uncle in a cottage on the ocean side of the island and his name was Mark. That night with him had haunted me for several days and even though I searched the beach for a possible glimpse of him, he was gone.
I made my annual merchandising trip north too New York, stopping in Philadelphia for bank credits and out of the blue met an old flame that I had lusted for while in the Navy and found out we both had wanted each other.
Taylor was fantastic in bed but even then thoughts of Mark popped in my head. Life can really be screwed up some times, I thought. Those affairs can be heart wrenching for a short time before slipping back into the recesses of my mind. It was always easy telling myself that is all part of being gay and unattached but realizing that middle age was sneaking up on me as on others didn't help in putting small affairs in the past.
When Curtis walked into my life it was almost like events were leading us on a collision course.
I had never thought much about so called "gaydar" before but Jeffrey and I guess Curtis must have picked up on what ever it is that gay men are supposed to have that indicates they are gay to another gay person. The problem there was that Jeffrey like Mark disappeared.
Curtis on the other hand had all but thrown himself at me with his displays in the dressing room and then in the back room with the Bowflex weight apparatus. I had been trying to tell myself he was only 16 years old and I had never given any thought to seducing teenagers before, especially minor teenagers. That didn't seem to be a problem with him though and he was not afraid too show his above average magnificence or make his desires known. Part of me said take him but the other part told me to take it easy, be careful.
Chris had said to take it easy and see what develops but that could be days away. Norfolk was not that far and if his aunt was going to be there, I decided we would drive there and see for ourselves what the situation was.
"Curtis, now that you have eaten, do you feel like giving Beth a hand in the store? I'm going to give Mr. Berger a call at the school and explain what's happened and I have a couple of other calls I want to make."
Sure Jack. Do you think you might be able to find out how my grandmother is?"
"Were going to do better than that. How about we take a drive up too Norfolk and see ourselves how she is? Maybe we will meet your aunt while we're there."
"My aunt? I didn't know I had an aunt until the cops said I did."
"According too Officer Moxley, your grandmother had a daughter living in Baltimore. They contacted her and she is supposed to be in Norfolk."
"That doesn't make her my aunt does it? My mom or dad never told me anything about me having an aunt."
"Okay Curtis, don't get upset. You were only 7 years old when your parents died. Maybe you don't remember her. We can find all that out when we meet her. If you're finished, go on downstairs. Tell Beth I'll be down in a few minutes. Okay?"
"Yes sir, but if I had an aunt in Baltimore grandma never said anything about her." He said turning and walking too the door.
Curtis looked dejected when he left the apartment, he sounded pretty certain about not having an aunt.
It only took a few minutes to find the schools phone number in our small telephone directory. The principal had a separate listing. The size of the school was K thru 12 all in one building. The outer banks didn't have a very large permanent population and the school only had a student body of less then 200 kids. Ed Berger answered after only a few rings.
"Ed Berger, School Principal, how may I help you?"
"Ed, Jack Cumberland. How are you?"
"Jack Cumberland?" He answered surprised. "What can I do for you Jack?"
I knew Ed Berger mainly from his bringing his son and daughter in for clothes. We had met at a few civic functions and he always seemed to be a friendly sort in his late 40's. He had the reputation of being an excellent administrator and very popular with students and parents alike. His two children were probably only a couple of years older then Curtis.
"Sorry for interrupting Ed but I'm calling about Curtis McKeon, one of my employee's. He is in a little trouble."
"It's about his grandmother, Mrs. Callister, isn't it Jack? Sgt Keifer called me earlier and told me Curtis was with you temporarily. How's the boy doing?" "He was pretty upset last night but he's calmed down some. Right now he is understandably upset about his grandmother. Legally I don't have an obligation but the boy is alone without her here. I couldn't see Curtis staying in jail even though it was only for security so he is with me."
"Not many people would take on a job like that Jack. I don't know how I can help you out except you might need help in applying with the Magistrate for legal temporary custody until his situation is resolved. I'd be happy to furnish a character reference if you need one.
"Thanks Ed, I've thought about that. Chris Flegler, my lawyer, is looking into that and he is trying to find out what he can about Mrs. Callister's condition and an aunt that Curtis is supposed to have in Baltimore. Curtis didn't know anything about her."
"I pulled his records while you were talking Jack. There is nothing mentioned about an aunt, only his grandmother. His parents are deceased, died in an accident in Italy according to an affidavit that was submitted when he was registered for school. That was 9 years ago."
"That's what I've been told Ed. Would it be okay if he missed school for a couple of days? I was thinking about taking him up to Norfolk and meet his aunt and see how his grandmother is doing."
"He will have a little catching up too do but that shouldn't be a problem for him, not according to his marks. He is a damn good student. I'd still see about getting custody even if only temporary Jack."
"Thanks Ed, I'll let you know how things go."
" Let me know if we can help out, I'd hate too see a good boy like Curtis wind up in the social system or be somewhere no one can help him. Call me anytime."
"Thanks again Ed, I will."
After talking with Ed Berger, I called Forrester's Furniture and made arrangements for a dark brown or burgundy covered hide-a-bed couch to be delivered and my old couch to be taken away. I should have done it before now but had never gotten around too it.
Chris Flegler agreed with making an application for legal temporary custody after we talked about what Ed Berger had told me. Chris had made calls too Chief Martin and they had no more information on Mrs. Callister or her daughter and he told him he was acting for Curtis at my request.
Finishing what was left of the cold coffee in my cup, I went downstairs. There were two customers in the store and Beth was helping one while the other was looking around.
There was an older lady looking through Levi jeans but I didn't see Curtis in the salesroom.
"May I help you ma'am?" I said walking up too her.
"No thanks, another young man is helping me, I believe he went in the backroom. I'm trying to find a few things for my grandson and he is about the same age and size is Ralph is. It's his birthday and all he wants is clothes. I don't know what young people wear today, do you?"
"It's difficult to keep up with ma'am but Curtis should be qualified to help you." I said as he walked up with an armload of jeans. "Call me if you need help Curtis."
"Yes sir." He said grinning, turning back to his customer.
"Curtis is a natural Mr. Cumberland. I was busy when the lady came in and he talked with her like he had been selling all of his life."
"He's doing a pretty good job with her isn't he? Beth, do you think Artie would like to come back part-time for a few days?"
"I'll stop at his house and ask. He probably wouldn't mind helping out if we need him, he's asked me a couple of times how Curtis was doing."
"We do Beth. Forrester's should be here, soon, with a hide-a-bed couch I've ordered and then I'm taking him too Norfolk. He may not show it but he's concerned about his grandmother and if his aunt is there he can meet her."
"What do you think is going to happen Mr. Cumberland?"
"I have no idea Beth. The police have sealed Mrs. Callister's home but I think that is overkill, nothing serious or criminal happened. I wonder how long she had lived there?"
"Ever since I was a little girl. She lived alone until Curtis was brought too stay with her, that's been almost 10 years now."
"It looks like Curtis is finishing with his customer, I'll help him close it out. Would you mind seeing if you can get in touch with Artie while I do? I'd like to leave after the couch is delivered. Mr. Berger at the school said he could miss a couple of days but I don't want to keep him out any longer then he needs to be."
"No sir."
"Are we finished ma'am? Is there anything else we can help you with?" I said as Curtis walked around the counter with the ladies purchases.
"I think I have everything I need. Your young man is quiet the salesmen. I had no idea there is so much too buying clothes for young people today."
"What kids wear today ma'am, changes almost with the seasons. I've just returned from a buying trip up north and we should have new lines in before Christmas if we can help you. Do you need any help Curtis?"
"No sir, Mr. Cumberland, I've got it all ready. Mrs. Markham, it all comes too $111.82. I think Ralph will like the things you've selected." Curtis said handing the register print out to Mrs. Markham.
"I don't think I could have done it without you and I'm sure he will."
"If there is something he would like to change Mrs. Markham just have him bring it back with the tags. I hope he has a nice birthday." Curtis said, handing her the packages and walking her too the door.
After the customer left, he turned back to me with a big smile on his face and his eyes sparkling. I felt a swelling of pride inside my chest.
"You did that pretty good."
"Yeah, I did didn't I? I know her grandson but I didn't tell her I did. Ralph's a big good looking stud a year ahead of me in school, boy is he ever built. She said he was about my size but he's a little bigger. I wrestled him a couple of times and got all excited and I think he knew it. He didn't let on and I didn't either but I'd liked to have. Jesus he felt big and not just his muscles."
"You'll have to tell me about it later. Right now, pick out a couple of pairs of slacks, shirts and a jacket. After you get the tags off put them in this box by the register. We are going to see your grandmother and aunt as soon as Forrester's gets here."
"I can help you with that Curtis. Artie will be in right after school Mr. Cumberland." Beth said as she walked up.
"Good Beth, it shouldn't be that hard on you in the mornings and you can work a little after you close and re-stock if you want. I'll make it up too you and Artie."
"Don't worry about it. You try and get the things done that need doing, we can take care of the store."
Curtis looked at me quizzically at first and then followed Beth. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the furniture truck pulling around the corner and I went too the back.
Hide-a-bed's are not light but the two deliverymen looked like they could handle it without any trouble even taking it up a flight of stairs. After they left, I tested it and it surprised me how easy it was to open and close. Taking two large cushions off and then pulling up on an inserted ring the bed unfolded in two sections controlled by hydraulic lifts on either side. With the mattress extended and the flip of two side locks it was held in place ready for sleeping on as soon as it was made up. It appeared to be a lot more comfortable then others that I had seen and slept on.
I went too my bedroom and getting two pillows, I tossed them on the bed and stretched out and laying my head on a pillow. I could feel my body relaxing as tension flowed from my tight muscles and a soft sigh drifted up from my chest. I was tired from the telephoning and all of the thoughts of Curtis, his schooling, his grandmother and aunt running through my head and I closed my eyes, dozing off.
I don't know how long I dozed but I dreamt of Mark standing over me, his magnificently muscled golden body gleaming, his eyes sparkling. His muscles flexed and rippled as he lowered his body straddling me, his hard cock lying on my still clothed body. He started unbuttoning my shirt and I ran my hands over his hard muscular chest feeling the smooth almost satin softness.
My shirt was unbuttoned too the top of my slacks and he ran his hands over my chest and around my rip cage. My rock hard cock was crushed under his buttocks, aching to be released. The intense ecstatic feelings that were coursing through me were surreal and I groaned, "God, I've wanted you."
"As much as I've wanted you Jack?" He said his soft lips covering mine our tongues dancing, twisting, and searching.
I could feel his heart beating rapidly, his chest laying on mine. His breathing was passionately gasping and I felt sticky pre-seminal fluid oozing from his hard throbbing cock, dripping on my stomach. He rose up and I gripped the back of his thighs pulling his cock closer too my lips. He leaned forward burying his head in the pillow next to mine and I heard a muffled "Jack wake up."
"Curtis!! I must have fallen asleep, what time is it?" "Just a little after 3. Artie is downstairs with Beth. She mentioned we were going too Norfolk."
"We are, how long have you been sitting on the bed?"
"Long enough to hear you say something about wanting someone and from the bulge in your pants, I could see you were having a hell of a dream. I unbuttoned your shirt but I stopped when you took my arms and started pulling me too you."
He was right; I hadn't noticed my shirt was unbuttoned when he first woke me.
"Why did you stop?"
"Because you were asleep and dreaming. I don't know who you were dreaming about but I don't think it was me. I didn't want you pulling me on top of you and then you wake up."
"Would that have been so bad?" I said looking into his soft sad eyes and holding his hand.
"Yes, it would." He said pulling his hand from mine; his eyes glimmering with unshed tears. "It would have been like cheating. If we go too bed Jack, I want it to be because you want me not someone in a dream. I've tried telling you how I feel but you keep putting me off."
"And I told you why didn't I? Until this mess is straightened out, we, you and I cannot afford having someone say the wrong thing. Don't you think it isn't hard for me?"
"I guess it is. A tasty little thing like me around and you can't touch it."
He said giggling.
"That's better." I said messing his hair up and kissing him on the forehead.
"There are two suitcases in the bedroom closet. Will you get them and open them up on the bed? We can pack and I'll call and get us a motel reservation for the night."
"Are we going to stay in a motel, what about school?"
"I talked with Mr. Berger, everything is taken care of."
While Curtis was getting the bags, I called and made us a reservation in a motel I knew of not far from the hospital.
After we had packed, I gave him the car keys so he could load the bags in the trunk while I called Chris. He answered the phone after just a couple of rings.
"Chris, Jack."
"I was just about to call you Jack, Chief Martin called me a few minutes ago. He got a call from the hospital; Mrs. Callister is not doing very well. He told me her daughter was there but he didn't talk with her. I guess with everything else she is only thinking about her mother right now."
"Your probably right Chris. I called to tell you I'm taking Curtis up too the hospital. What have you found out about the custody application?"
"The Magistrate granted it on the advice of Chief Martin and the circumstances. You must have impressed Ed Berger; he called and recommended you having custody. I have the papers here in my office."
"Hold on too them until we get back. If I need you, can you come up?"
"Sure, I don't having anything pending until next month. Just give me a call. Where will you and Curtis be?"
"Not far from the hospital." I said giving him the name and number of the motel. "Do me another favor and ask Chief Martin if he could have one of the cruisers keep an eye on the store while we're gone. Beth and Artie will be taking care of things but it wouldn't hurt if someone looking in on them."
"Okay Jack, got it. Call if you need me and be careful."
I knew without his saying it what he meant about being careful. After I hung up, I went downstairs and gave Beth the same information I had given Chris telling her I would call sometime the next day.
After loading the bags in the trunk, Curtis had backed the car out of the garage and locked it. He was sitting on the passenger side waiting.
I thought about what Chris had said about his grandmother but I didn't say anything figuring there was no need upsetting him.
He sat looking out of the window not saying anything until we had crossed the causeway. He turned, drawing one leg up on the seat and leaned back against the door his arm on the back of the seat. He was wearing a pair of Blue Boy jeans and a light blue thin fleece lined sweatshirt. There was a noticeable bulge in his crotch and the nipples of his breasts were visible through the shirt. For a brief moment I thought he was posing for me until he spoke.
"Do you think my grandma will be okay Jack?"
"We can only hope she will be. Strokes can be pretty bad sometimes. Sentara is one of the best hospitals around and I'm sure she is being well taken care of."
"Is this lady you told me about going to be there with her?"
"I should think she would be. We will probably see her. You've never met her before?"
"Nope, not unless it was when I was a baby and I don't remember it. Grandma never said anything about having another daughter besides my mom."
"Did your grandfather ever mention it?"
"I never knew him, he died when I was a baby."
I had a hard time thinking of him as a baby from the way he was sitting across from me. Thick brown hair, sultry brown eyes and a developing muscular body, he was anything but a baby.
Normally the highway would be crowded with tourists but it was late September and there were only a few cars. The days were getting shorter and even though we were still on Daylight Saving Time it was getting darker earlier. When I switched the car lights on Curtis moved a little closer.
"Jack, what's going to happen if grandma doesn't get any better? Will I have to stay with someone else?
"You mean will you have to stay with your Aunt?"
"She's not my aunt. I don't want to stay with her, I want to stay with you if I'm not going to be with my grandma."
"Curtis, let's not go jumping off the deep end. Your grandmother might be fine and you will be worrying for nothing. If for some reason there are complications, we will talk with the doctors and her daughter and see where we go from there. For right now, the Magistrate granted me temporary custody and you are with me until things get settled."
"Great!!" He almost shouted. "That means I can stay with you and that's what I want."
He moved next too me and laid his head on my shoulder, his arms around my neck and chest squeezing tight.
"Whoa boy." I said sucking air in my lungs. "Keep that up and we might wind up in the hospital instead of visiting."
He slid away dropping his head sheepishly still sitting sideways with his hands in his crotch. "Sorry Jack, I got excited about staying with you."
"It's not a done deal yet Curtis. Lets not count the chickens until they hatch." I said turning off of the interstate. "The motel is right up here. The hospital is not that far and after we check in, we can go on over."
"Can we get something to eat first? We haven't eaten since lunch."
"Sure, we can eat in the motel or at the hospital. They have a cafeteria there."
"Okay if we eat in the motel?"
"If that's what you want, we can."
We pulled into the motel parking lot stopping at the front entrance. A bellboy ran out and opened the door almost before I had the car stopped.
"Welcome too the Marriott. Registration is inside too your left. I'll get your luggage and the valet will park your car." He said cheerfully.
"We only have two bags." Curtis whispered before getting out.
"He will take care of them. Follow me."
The lobby was dark paneling, heavy chandeliers hanging from high ceilings and thick dark maroon carpeting. Leather chairs and sofas were scattered around with small granite topped tables and lamps. Etched glass windows and doors led into the lounge and dining rooms. Curtis was trying to take it all in at once, his eyes as big as saucers.
There were several young people behind the granite-topped reception desk. A blond, blue eyed young girl turned as I walked up.
"Good evening sir, how may I help you?"
"You should have a reservation for us, Jack Cumberland."
"Yes, Mr. Cumberland, we've been expecting you. You have a message from Mr. Flegler. He called about and half an hour ago. Mr. Flegler left his number and asked that you call him at his office as soon as you arrived. You can use one of the telephones in the lobby or call from your room." She said handing me an in house memo.
"I'll call him from the room." "If you will just fill out registration please." She said handing me a pen and registration card.
When I had finished filling out the registration card the girl handed the bellboy a key. "Room 1210 Lane. I hope you enjoy your stay Mr. Cumberland."
As soon as we were in the room and the bellboy had left, I picked up the telephone receiver pushing the button for an outside line and dialed Chris's number. His wanting us to call as soon as we got here didn't sound good.
The phone buzzed and clicked a few times before Chris answered.
"What's up Chris, we just got here?"
"Jack, you and Curtis hadn't been gone 30 minutes and I got a call from a Mrs. Norma Parks, Mrs. Callister's daughter. She called Chief Martin and he referred her too me. I'm afraid it's not good news; Mrs. Callister is paralyzed and semi-comatose. Have you said anything to Curtis about his grandmother?"
"Not yet I haven't."
"Maybe you better prepare him. This Mrs. Parks asked Chief Martin where he was and of course the Chief had to tell him Curtis was with you temporarily until other arrangements were made. She seemed a little upset when I told her I was representing Curtis and you and that you had been granted custody."
"Upset about what, me having custody? What about her mother? What did she say about her?"
"Only what I told you. She seemed more upset that I was involved and she couldn't understand why Curtis would need a lawyer and what your interests in the boy were. That's really not natural Jack. She seemed more concerned about Curtis then her mother. What else do you know about his relationship with his grandmother Jack?"
"Only what I told you. His parents left him with Mrs. Callister when they went too Switzerland. His father was stationed there and since he was just starting school, they wanted him in our schools while they were gone rather then the schools over there. After they died in an automobile accident, he stayed with her. That's all I know, why?"
" I don't know Jack, call it a lawyer's intuition but I think there is more to it. When are you going to the hospital?"
"We were going after we had something to eat."
"Since Mrs. Callister is in the condition she is, why don't you wait until tomorrow? I want to check a couple of things first and then I'm going to drive up. Can you do that?"
"We can unless Curtis wants to see his grandmother. Didn't you tell his aunt we were going to be here?"
"I only told her that you would be coming up but not when. I didn't tell her where you would be staying. Right now, I think we should get a little more information if we can before you and Curtis meet her. She sounded as if she would contest your having custody even though it's only temporary. We don't know a thing about her and I just think we ought to be on a firmer footing that's all."
"I'll do what I can if you think its best Chris. What time do you think you'll be here?"
"Probably around noon. Talk with Curtis and I'll see you then."
Other then the immediate reasons for helping Curtis, I hadn't thought much beyond that. Obviously Chris had or he wouldn't be so cautious. I was remembering how vehement Curtis was about not knowing or wanting to be with his grandmother's daughter. Deep inside of me though, I didn't want it either. I didn't know that much about him except what Beth had told me. I did know that I was developing feelings that I hadn't had before. During the time I was talking with Chris, I had almost forgot that he was sitting across from me hearing everything I was saying.
"Jack, is everything okay, are we going too see grandma tonight? From what you were saying to Mr. Flegler it doesn't sound like we are."
"Maybe we should wait until tomorrow Curtis. Your aunt, Norma Parks called him after she talked with Chief Martin."
"I don't know her." He said interrupting me.
"You probably don't but she might be your aunt. Right now that's not important. Mr. Flegler told me your grandmother is not doing very well and he thought we might want to wait until tomorrow before we go and see her and meet Mrs. Parks. It's up too you, we can go now if you want or later."
"Did he say how bad grandma was?" He said softly, his hands clasped in front of him.
I didn't want to tell him in depth but he had a right to know. "She is paralyzed and in a semi-comatose state Curtis. Right now that means she can't move and probably would not recognize you. The doctor's will be able to tell us more when we see them."
What I was afraid would happen did, Curtis lowered his head and his shoulders started shaking. I moved over to the couch and took him in my arms holding him close his head on my chest under my chin. I didn't say anything, just held him feeling his body trembling as he cried. There was nothing I really could say that would comfort him but there was a strong feeling of compassion swelling inside of me and he felt good in my arms.
We sat together for several minutes before he slowly calmed down. I had been unconsciously stroking his hair and back as I held him. It was hard thinking of him as being a well-developed 16 yr old young man; he was more like a little boy that needed comforting. Putting my fingers under his chin I lifted his wet tear stained face too mine and looked into his eyes.
"Everything will be alright Curtis." I said softly.
"You probably think I'm just a silly kid Jack but as long as I'm with you, I know it will be." He said kissing me softly.
It was difficult to resist returning his kiss but I leaned my head back a little, "Boy, you do make it hard." I said feeling a strong surge in my groin.
"It doesn't have to be Jack, you know how I feel and I'm not going to tell anyone. Make love to me Jack, please. . . . " He pleaded.
Everything else stopped having any meaning except the strong urge that swept over me. His eyes were soft liquid brown pools glowing with desire, the same desire I felt. His lips were soft against mine and he melted into my arms molding his body too mine. The pressure of his hard manhood pressed against my thigh, we had reached the point of no return together and we crossed that threshold of wanting each other.
Tomorrow was several hours away. . . . . . . we would cross any bridges then.
