Chapter 4

I felt my heart skipped a beat, she wanted to be with me, the only thing that I was still afraid of was that if we were seen in public it would be seen as Private S Davids with Dr. Evens seen as a man and wife and not as two females, which made me sad, because I was proud of who I am. I am a lesbian, dating women, or well hopefully dating this wonderful woman in front of me. I needed to make sure that Chris was okay with this before I continued with my heart in my chest. "Chris, there is one thing though, I would love to be with you and spend time with you, but first, if we were to be seen in public, we would be seen as a man and woman, and not as two women. I know you are a proud lesbian, and I don't want to be uncomfortable with that."

I know it will be something to get use to Shane, but I thought as much as we started talking, and I am still looking forward to spend time with you. I know that we are two women being together, doesn't matter what the other world sees...

Although I just said that, I was really concerned, like Shane said. I am a very proud, open Lesbian, and now I might be mistaken to be in a heterosexual relationship. My feeling for Shane was strong, who am I kidding, I was head over heals in love with her, so some way we will make this work. I felt Shane pulling me towards her and I just let go. We will take each day as it comes...

Everything felt right, I had Chris in my arms, and I'm not planning to ever let her go. Everything will work out, it had to, we were meant for each other I felt more sure of that than anything in my life...

It's been 4 weeks that Chris and I had so far together. We took each day as it came, some days were harder than other, I think the hardest one was about two weeks ago. We went out for dinner and some of the other nurses came along, at the restaurant some of the other recruits were there as well.

Private Rogers basically kept his distance after our previous encounter, well until that night he did... After we ordered our drinks and were just getting on with our conversation. Rogers appeared.

It was obvious that he already had a few drinks in, as once again his mouth was loose... "So I see the two love birds finally found each other, I guess I can get some credit for that, as if we didn't have our little fight, cheap shot by the way Davids, maybe one day you will learn how to fight like a real man, you would have never actually talk to her you coward." Chris wanted to say something, but I pulled her back, the last thing we needed was a hearing or some place where the truth might come out. "Okay, fine Rogers, whatever credit you want, you may have, now will you please just leave, you are not welcome here." I hoped that would have satisfied him, but no luck... "So Chris, tell me, is this little boy enough for you, or do you need a real man like me, I can assure you that with my package will be much more satisfying than little old Davids... And ill be able to do a lot more with my steady back, than Davids with his injury, I'm willing to bend over for you..." "That is enough Rogers, now hush up and leave before you end up in sick bay again. And keep your mouth shut about Chris and me; you have no right to run your mouth!!!!! Go away NOW!" My patients were running lo now, all I wanted was Rogers to leave, and to enjoy the evening with my Girl. "Whatever coward, ill see you on base, where your girlfriend isn't there to protect you...

Two weeks passed and everything were going great, I worked hard to get to the top of my class, Things between Chris and myself couldn't be any better, then we were hit with a big bang... Our Troops were going out, the following morning to Iraq as a back up to bring back our troops that were fighting over there. As we were to leave early the next morning, we were giving the rest of the day off. I immediately went to first aid, to tell Chris the news, needles to say, it was a very sad moment for us both. She got the afternoon off and we took a walk off the base for a while, just to get away from the truth. We had a sad goodbye and we both shed a few tears, I tried to pull myself together and went to my bunker, preparing for our leave...

This was where it started getting hard, Shane was to leave the next morning, and I was to stay behind, to complete my training, my heart was breaking, I didn't know what to expect, we all heard stories as to what happens in Iraq and my mind went haywire. They only had a few hours off before leaving we took a walk off base; I don't know what we were trying to do, or trying to prevent time from passing. The goodbye was sad, heartbreaking even. That night I could not get a minute of sleep because of worries for Shane...

No matter how much training you receive, the real fight is way worse. The moment we set our feet on the ground everything was pressured and time was not on our side. In a matter of second your only concern was your mate on your left and on your right, nothing else mattered, they were your security, your family at that moment. As we moved down the alley we saw people watching your every move. we tried staying as close to one another as possible until we heard a loud bang, followed by two other sounds, our captain tried reassuring us to move on, to move forward, we had to extract our men, we were nearing the pick up point when suddenly everything went black...

"Davids, Davids, answer me, are you okay?" I heard my captain talking to me, but couldn't find the strength to reply, I didn't know what happened, as I turned my head all I saw was blood and fire, a strong smell of burnt metal and plastic was in the air. A few of the marines were at the sides of other, struggling to help others, screams could be heard all around. I tried sitting up, but my left arm felt numb, my captain was by my side, helping me, the streets were suddenly deserted, we've been hit, it was an ambush, I was waiting to wake up, this felt unreal, maybe my stress for our upcoming mission was getting to me.

Davids, talk to me, how are you feeling, the paramedics is on the way, hang in there son, we'll take care of you. Then it hit me, this wasn't a dream, we've been hit, this was real life, now the numbness in my arm wasn't numb anymore, it was pain, and it was almost unbearable. How could this have happened? This was suppose to be a routine, easy extract. " Cap, what happened, what happened" that's all that came out of my mouth, my mind was racing, My captain was covered in blood, my body was covered with cuts and aching pain, there were a lot of marines that laid motionless, and the sight of that brought me to tears.

It's only been one day and I was going crazy, I couldn't concentrate, all I could think of was Shane, What if something goes wrong? She assured me that this was routine, an easy extract and that they would be back within 3 days. This was the first day and I don't know if I can take much more. My lunch break was over, and I was looking forward to getting back to work, forcing my mind to concentrate wishing time to pass by quickly. The nurses asked me to go out with them, to go have a drink, but I politely declined, wasn't in the mood for company. I was hoping that Shane would call me; I know that was highly unlikely, but still was hoping...

Day 2 in hell, or what felt like hell, we were now in some sort on hospital, or some temporary sick bay, I just woke up and my body ached, I guess the pain medication was wearing off. I felt a strange feeling in my left arm, but couldn't really move, a doctor came to do his rounds, and I heard him at the bed next to mine. I think Rogers was in there, though I heard his voice, he sounded in serious pain, I wondered where Dodkins was, we were getting close to friends, so he was one of my concerns. Concerns, then I realized, Chris, I need to speak to Chris, damn, and what will I say to her? I told her this is routine, and that this will be easy, I want her to be with me, I needed her here with me, my tears started up again, that's when the doctor came to my bed. "Private Dodkins, how are you this morning?" Well at least he sounded nice. "Uhm, I guess I am okay doc, I'm still struggling to put all the pieces together, do you know what happened doc? Or can you please get my captain for me?" "In good time son, in good time, first let me examine you, you have some serious cuts and bruises on you, I was told that you had a back injury, how is that feeling?" Damn, the bandages, I forgot about that, now what am I going to do? He called me son, so he doesn't know the truth, well at least not yet. "My back is fine doc, can you please tell me, and I have some weird feeling in my left arm, and can you please tell me what my injuries are there?

For that Id rather call your captain, there is no simple explanation, and I just feel that your captain needs to be present for some sort of support.

Support, why did I need support? This was starting to become a bit scary, and I did not want scary at this moment. I tried to tell myself to find a happy place, away from the pain away from the fear. The only happy thought I could think of was Chris, I was wondering where she was and what she was doing?

My thoughts were far across the sea, I didn't get a call from Shane, although I was expecting it, I still felt sad about it. This day was halfway through and I was starting to look forward to the next day, knowing that Shane was coming back; I decided to take a long relaxing bath thinking happy thoughts... I wanted to plan a romantic night out for Shane and I as soon as shed be back, already got a few nurses helping me with my plans, so knowing that it was only a day that separated us my hope was filled again...

A loud scream woke me up early the next morning, at first I wasn't quite sure where I was, until the nurse came rushing to my side, without realizing it, the loud scream came from me, apparently I had some nightmares the past two days and this one had to be bad, although I had no recollection of my dream. Private Davids, I think your captain is close, let me just go call him, ill be right back sir. The doctor also came in. "Private, I need to speak to you, firstly I need you to be 100% honest. You don't have a serious back injury do you?" Damn, I was afraid that this day would come.

"No sir, I do not have a back injury, and if you realized that, you probably also noticed that I am female, and not a male marine. To further answer any possible questions no, no one knows that I am female, and I know that you have to report this." I felt my dreams slipping away, my life as a marine was over. Tears started rolling down my cheeks. "Private, lets leave that matter for a later time, I have some bad news for you, and the injuries you've sustained during the accident was more servere than we first thought. Last night before lights out you asked about your feeling in your left arm, sir I regret to inform you that you suffered serious injuries to your left arm, we think that it might be from the explosion, thus we had to amputate your arm. I'm sorry sir." At that moment my captain arrived. "Morning Private, well I think you just heard the news, and I am sorry about that, we will keep you here for a while if it will make things easier for you, we'll also provide you with all the necessary rehabilitation to get you back to your strength." "Captain, if I may speak frankly?" "Go ahead Private." "We are suppose to go back to base today, if I'm not mistaken, if that is the case, I would like to go back. I am sure we have all the necessary medical staff on base to provide with my needs. I just don't want to stay here. Please, and if I may have

One final request, could I please make a phone call, this is quite urgent for me, please Captain?" "Sure private, we will see how the day pass and then head on home, Nurse, could you perhaps follow through on his request, and please give him some privacy during the phone call if possible.

Waking up Friday morning I couldn't wait for the day to start, as the faster it started the faster it would pass and id be reunited with Shane, the thought made me smile, and I thought this day would be great, the phone rang just as I was about to exit my quarters to go to work. I hoped that it was Shane, maybe they are coming home earlier. "Hello, this is Chris" "Hi, Babe, how are you doing?" "A lot better now that I've heard your voice, you sound tired baby, when are you coming home Angel?" "Tired yes, uhm we'll be back on base around 5 I think." I knew I had to tell her about our accident, but couldn't completely find the right words, before I could get the words out Chris spoke. "Baby, I have a little surprise for you as soon as you come back, if you are on base by 5 everything will still be on schedule." "Stop, Angel, uhm I need to speak to you, uhm something came to light; the Doctor here knows I'm a woman, uhm..." I was staling, okay, one part done, now the next. "How did he find out that you are a woman babe? Wait, you said the doctor, what doctor, what happened, why are you at a doctor?" I started rambling, my mind went at 100miles an hour, what happened over there, why were they at a doctor, before I jump to conclusions, lets fist hear her explanation.

"Babe, there was an accident on our route, just before we reached our destination, there was some sort of explosion, I'm not sure what exactly happened, there were some casualties, uhm private Dodkins was one of the fatalities, Rogers was also hurt, but I'm not sure how serious it is." "Shane, I'm sorry for the marines, but please, how are you, did you get hurt?" This was the bad one, I thought about hiding the arm thing, and then decided against it. "Baby, I am okay, I have some scratches, bruises and cuts, then I think the worst for me is, uhm, uhm, I lost my arm baby, my left arm was damaged in the accident, the damaged was to servere to save it, the had to amputated above my elbow." I heard my voice caught in my throat, tears were now running freely over my face. It felt scary to say that out load, like I finally acknowledged my future disability, my future life...

What, was I dreaming or were we really having this conversation, how was it possible, how could a routine operation go so horribly wrong, how could my baby have gotten so hurt. "Baby, are you okay, really okay? When are you coming back, are you coming back? What are they going to do now?" I suddenly had all these questions and no answers, I felt tears starting to run down my face, I went quiet, didn't know what to say.

This is the second last chapter of this story, I hope you enjoy it, I know it is a bit of change from my normal writing. For any comments or complaints, feel free to contact me.
