THE WHITE HOUSE

Chapter 3

All ceased to be well in Paradise one day, well into Cal's second year at college. Dido heard a CSA operative talking to a defence official about a future roll for Cal when he had his degree. They were laughing about the fact that Cal was a sexual athlete, screwing his college friend all week and coming back to Washington to do the same to a presidential aide at weekends. Of course he confronted Cal the next weekend.

Cal was as happy as it was possible to be, coming to Washington to be with Dido every weekend. He had grown to love this very attractive man who made him feel so good. His extra activity with Henry, he felt was not a problem, he liked Henry but the sex was just a release. Sure it was good, but he had no feelings of permanency the way he did with Dido. The confrontation was immediate, thereby catching him completely off balance. He walked in the door of the apartment and Dido sprung up from his chair, faced Cal with his hands on his hips looking seriously pissed off.

"I hear you are screwing one of your college friends on a regular basis. Tell me it isn't true."

Cal dropped his weekend bag and just looked at Dido for a minute while he gathered his thoughts.

"Yes, I'm having sex with a friend at college, but that's all it is. I like Henry, he keeps me sane when I'm away from you, but it's only sex. We've been doing it almost from my first week at college. I love you Dido, but we never discussed whether our relationship should be monogamous."

"I never brought up the subject because I assumed we were. I'm not in to promiscuity, I think I want you to leave."

Cal was shocked, this was not what he wanted, big army hero didn't stop his emotions getting the better of him some times. Tears formed quickly and started to fall down his cheeks.

"I love you Dido, but I won't beg to stay."

With that, Cal fished the apartment and car keys out of his pocket and dropped them on the coffee table.

"Thank you for all your help and support. Goodbye Dido."

He immediately turned and left before Dido had time to reply. Clear of the apartment block Cal called Elise on his cell.

"Hi Sis, sorry to be a nuisance, but can I come and stay for the weekend?"

"Of course you can, but why aren't you staying with Dido?"

"Tell you all about it when I get there."

Elise was waiting for him with much trepidation. When he first started seeing Dido, she was worried about him getting hurt, but they had been together for more than a year so the worry had gone, now it was back with a capitol W.

When he walked in the door she knew it was big trouble. Her big macho brother had obviously been crying, and she couldn't remember the last time she had seen that.

"Come and sit down Cal, can I get you a drink?"

He shook his head, still not able to string words together yet. Elise sat with him and gave him a sisterly cuddle.

"Want to talk about it?"

Cal looked desolate and shook his head again. Elise got him a large brandy and told him to drink it, that worked, a bit of fire in the stomach loosened his tongue.

"Dido threw me out because he found out I was screwing around at college. It's true, but it was only sex. I love Dido so much Sis, what am I going to do?"

"You're going to go for a shower, put some smart clothes on and let me take you out to dinner. Then a good night's sleep here and we'll talk about it in the morning when you've had a chance to calm down."

Cal had to smile Miss Practical was taking charge. He kissed her and got up to do her bidding. Back in the lounge with just a towel round him.

"I haven't got anything smart, my clothes are all at Dido's, all I've got is what I was stood up in when I came in."

"No sweat Cal that will do."

They had an enjoyable dinner with Cal visibly calming down as he told Elise about college and Henry. She was pleased to hear how hard he was working, and admitted that Tom got regular reports on him and she read them.

"He is so pleased his judgement has proved correct Cal, he has lots of exciting plans for you when you graduate."

Cal just nodded before replying.

"He might not be so eager when he realises I've been screwing around."

"Cal, I'm sure he knows more about you than any other person on this earth. I know the secret service had you under surveillance for a year before clearing you to receive a load of secret information when you are at the White House. Your sex life would only worry him if your partners were suspect."

Trying to make light of it she grinned at her brother and asked, "Are there many of them then sexy man?" Cal grinned as well. He could see the funny side of Elise's question.

"No Sis, just Henry for release during the week. I love Dido, but we never discussed monogamy. I didn't think it was that important. Dido has my heart, Henry is just lust, and I do like him, but we could never have a future even if I wanted it. His life is mapped out for him by the family."

Cal sounded so practical, she wasn't sure she could think like him about sex, but perhaps gay men were different.

Even with more alcohol inside him, Cal slept badly and looked jaded the next morning.

"I don't see that I can do anything about this Sis. If Dido loves me as much as I love him he'll want to talk about this when he has had time to think. I'm going back to college this morning. I have to get my head round the idea that I may have lost him. When you see him in work on Monday, will you ask him if you can have all my clothes and things, I don't really want to spend a load of money replacing them. I'll get a job now anyway to put some more money in my savings. There is plenty of weekend work around the college for undergraduates."

Elise was pleased he appeared to have his act together again, but was sad for him. He was obviously taking this badly, he looked so sad.

"Alright Cal, I'll see you off at the station. I know Tom will still want to see you at the White House so you will have to psyche yourself to seeing Dido there. You can always stay here when you're in town, Robert won't mind."

Cal smiled, "Two years Sis, when is he going to make an honest woman of you?"

She smiled, "Soon I think, he is waiting for a partnership to be offered and that should come this year. I hope he will be okay with me still working because I love this job."

Cal felt better by the time he was comfortable on the train. He wouldn't let the break with Dido screw up his life. But he hoped this was only temporary. He knew he would not have ditched Dido because he had outside sex. Sex was a physical thing, it was love that was important and that came from the heart. Sex with Dido was mind bending because of the love. Sex with Henry was good fun because they liked each other, and he sniggered to himself, because Henry had a stupendous penis.

He worked normally all week but wasn't interested in sex with Henry.

"I'm sorry Henry, bad situation at the weekend, you are going to have to give me time to work through it. Maybe next week."

Henry wasn't too upset, he was such a good looking guy, finding a bed partner was never any problem, he just happened to like Cal a lot.

Another White House invitation arrived on the Tuesday and Cal had to psyche himself to seeing Dido. Wednesday Elise called to tell him she had all of his things from Dido's apartment and she would make sure his tux and dress shirt were ready for him when he arrived on Friday. That for Cal was the clincher. If Dido was looking to forgive him he wouldn't have handed over all his things. More tears, Cal was gutted. Losing his first real love was proving hard to take. How would he react when he saw him on Friday, he couldn't make a fool of himself with the President, and no doubt a load of defence chiefs.

Robert was working so Elise accompanied Cal, he needed her support and she did stick with him. He was commandeered by several defence company chiefs who wanted to pick his brain more. Then his spirits soared when the boss of McDonnell- Douglas, with the general in charge of defence procurement started discussing an actual appointment for him when he graduated.

"Cal, I've been talking to General Shafer and the President. We'd like you to join our design and development department when you graduate. If you are free tomorrow, perhaps you would like to come out to the plant and we can sit down to discuss your contract. That should be useful for you as we will sponsor the remainder of your college time. We thought $20,000 a year and a company car until you graduate, and then a salary package that you should be happy with. The President has made it clear he will be very happy to see you employed by a major defence contractor, and as you know, Tom is almost certainly going to get a second term so we look to please him."

The last was said with a broad smile on his face, but that wasn't as broad as Cal's when they shook hands on it.

"I'll send a car for you in the morning Cal if you let me have your address before you leave tonight."

"Thank you Sir, I appreciate that. What time in the morning?"

Another broad smile and the comment, "You tell me Cal. Not too early and then we can have lunch before I return you to your home."

"1000 would be fine, Sir."

"Good, let me have your address then, the car will take you to the airport where a company jet will be waiting for you."

Crikey, the V.I.P. treatment, Cal thought he must be good to warrant that.

He took his leave and went looking for Elise. She gave him a business card with her address on it and let him deliver that before returning to tell her his news. On the way back to her he almost walked into Dido. He went as white as a sheet, dropped his eyes and mumbled, "Sorry", before rushing off again.

Elise saw the devastated look on Cal's face as he returned and guessed what had caused it.

"C'mon big boy, time for a stiff drink."

She led him like a baby to the bar and asked for a large brandy.

"Down in one and then we talk."

Cal did, almost choking on it. He didn't drink much at all, and certainly not hard liquor, neat.

"Now, what exciting news have you got for me?"

"Jeez, Elise, I'm going out to McDonnell-Douglas's plant tomorrow to discuss an employment contract. They are going to give me a company car and sponsor the remainder of my college time to the tune of $20,000 per year."

Elise was so pleased, and knew that he had got the offer on merit. Tom was great at looking after his people, but he wouldn't look after Cal if he was a lame horse graduate, so he must be good.

Feeling much better, Cal started circulating again with Elise on his arm when a strange man confronted him.

"Hi, I'm Tab Moore, my brother has told me a little about you and I thought we ought to meet."

Cal was flattered, he knew about the three Moore brothers that worked for Tom, and this one, Tab, who was the lover of the youngest Moore brother, with the two in the middle being lovers as well, Michael and Tyler. He also knew that Tab and Tyler were blood brothers, but not the others, and that all four had, at one time, been slaves. What an exciting foursome they had to be.

"I'm pleased to meet you Tab, but why would you want to meet me?"

"My father's company make automotive engines for the defence industry and I'm a trainee manager with my dad."

It clicked then. Wheels within wheels.

"When you have the time Cal, I'd like to show you round our R&D department. No hurry, here's my card, just give me a call when you are down here from Princeton and I'll set it up."

Hands were shaken and they parted company.

"I'm blown away with all this attention sis. Am I really considered this good?"

Elise nodded, "Tom thinks you are pretty special. He will almost certainly get a second term, and by the time that is over you should be so well established that your career will still skyrocket even without the President's patronage."

"Wow, won't Mum and Dad be pleased."

"They are already Cal. They are so proud of you, they tell me every time I talk to them."

Apart from the Dido situation, Cal was feeling good about himself, and that looked like getting some kind of solution soon.

Cal looked up from Elise and over her head he saw Dido approaching. He looked down again and in a panic, whispered to Elise.

"Dido is coming towards us Sis, what am I going to do?"

"Get it settled so that you can get on with your life."

Short, to the point, and it made sense.

"Ok, I'll try. I just hope I don't make a fool of myself."

"You won't, just remember, you are a much better catch for Dido than he is for you. Be strong Cal, I love you."

Dido arrived then, looking almost as strained as Cal felt.

"Good evening Elise, I wonder if I could drag your brother away for a few minutes."

Cal couldn't look at him. He loved him so much and those eyes were incredible.

Dido led him to an ante room and then turned to face him.

"After I delivered all your gear to Elise, I realised how much I missed you. I think I might have been a bit precipitate in my actions last weekend. Can we talk about this Cal, I love you and realised I don't want to lose you."

Cal wanted to shout his happiness to the heavens, but this was his chance to get their relationship right, he must keep his cool so that when he moved back in to Dido's apartment it was on a more solid base.

"I love you too Dido, I hurt last week, badly. I don't want that to happen again so this isn't the time or the place to talk about it. I have to go out to the McDonnell-Douglas plant tomorrow. Can I call you when I get back. If it's late we can go out to dinner and then talk. If I'm back in the afternoon we can talk and then go out to dinner if we are sorted."

Dido nodded. He so wanted to take Cal in his arms and kiss him. Instead he dropped his eyes from Cal's face and almost whispered, "Ok Cal, I'll be in my apartment from lunch time on."

Both young men were full of apprehension wondering how the talk would go.

When Cal arrived back in Washington from McDonnell-Douglas, he did so clutching a contract, which made him want to sing. The near future was taken care of. He had money in his pocket, regular income going into his bank account, and he would have a new car delivered to his door before returning to college on Sunday night. Elise was delighted as well. With his new found stability, Cal would be much more able to deal with Dido.

"Now Cal, before you see Dido, decide what you want from this relationship. You are the strong one, don't agree to something you can't deliver just to get him back."

Cal grinned at his sister who knew what the split was all about.

"Ok, Sis, I'll tell him I want unbridled sex with as many guys as take my fancy, and he can take it or leave it. Do you think I'll get away with that?"

Elise realised he was playing with her, but she was serious.

"Don't joke about this Cal. You must decide seriously what you want from this relationship and what you can deliver to satisfy Dido. If he is looking for monogamy it must be because he is looking for this to be long term, and that makes his love special."

Cal sobered up then.

"You're right Sis, I'm just not sure I can be what he wants. I do love him, but I'm not sure I can be monogamous sexually."

Elise shook her head, she was such a loyal person she never even considered going with another guy when Robert was away.

"Ok, well you'd better go to see him and get it sorted. You can take my car if you want to."

That was it, a `phone call and Cal was on his way, to what he hoped would be a resumption of his love affair.

He entered Dido's apartment determined to be honest and to stick to his guns.

"Thanks for coming Cal."

Dido blushed after saying that, it sounded so formal as though this was a business meeting, then he thought about it and realised it was.

"Let's sit down and get this sorted Cal, I don't like how things are between us."

Cal sat, still saying nothing.

"I love you very much and hoped that we would have a long term relationship until I heard about your college exploits. Now I don't know what to think. You say you love me as well, but your actions don't mirror those words."

There was a long silence to follow during which Cal was trying to put into words what he wanted to convey to Dido, but when he spoke it came out differently to the way he wanted it to.

"I guess I think of love and sex in a different way to you Dido. I love you, and want us to have a future together, but I love sex as well and when I'm away from you I don't find it difficult to get the sex I want. I don't ever imagine having sex with other guys when I'm with you, even with such hotties as the president's son and the Moore brothers around, but when I'm away I just find it natural and I'm not sure I could change that, not even to please you. I can try, but I don't think it will work."

Dido looked sad, and disappointed. He looked down at the floor and almost mumbled.

"I don't think I can live like that Cal, I guess I have a jealous streak. The thought of you in bed with another guy would drive me crazy if we were together. I don't even think it's worth trying, it would just prolong the misery. Just the thought of breaking up with you, permanently, hurts, but I don't see any other way."

He looked up then and saw the tears in Cal's eyes. He slid across the floor and took Cal in his arms.

"I'm sorry Baby, I guess you have to make a decision as well. I'll wait for you Cal and when you're ready to try monogamy I'll be here I'm sure."

Cal looked into those eyes, the eyes that turned him weak at the knees whenever he saw the love emanating from them, and the tears flowed freely.

Cal stood up and walked towards the door of the apartment, signalling the end of the discussion. Dido was hoping Cal would leave and not make this break any harder to get through. Cal didn't think he could string two words together to put up an argument, he knew the ball was definitely in his court, so he did as Dido obviously wished. Devastated would be how Elise summed up the state of her brother when he returned to her apartment. He went straight to his bedroom and cried his eyes out. Elise let him, only taking him in her arms to give him a hug when he emerged several hours later, puffy eyed and looking desolate.

"You have to get on with your life now Cal. You have so much to look forward to. Your career will start at a run when you have your degree, stay focussed. You'll only have to see Dido when you are at the White House, and that won't be all that often. Please don't let this derail you."

Cal looked at his sister who cared for him like a mother hen and smiled.

"I'll try Sis."
