Section 20
Davey - Thursday night
"Good afternoon, Mr. McAdams. Good afternoon, Mr. Tanner." The little round man in the tailor shop greeted us as we entered. "And good afternoon to you, Mr. Chen. How may we be of service to all of you today ?" He looked like he might have been Santa Clause, but he was clean shaven and only had a fringe of hair around the back of his head from ear to ear.
"Good afternoon, Mr. Peters." Uncle Dean greeted the man. "We are going to need a fairly large order today. There will be five new customers for you. I will have Mr. Tanner introduce our new associates." Dad then introduced Jason, Anson and Dale to Mr. Peters. They all shook hands.
"These gentlemen will each need three business suits and two social suits. They will also need a standard tuxedo for formal wear." The three guys all had surprised looks on their faces. Apparently, they had not expected the shopping this afternoon to be including them.
"Will they each need the special security sizing ?" Mr. Peters inquired. Dad nodded `yes'.
"What's that ?" Jason asked Dale. Dale just shrugged his shoulders.
"It is to accommodate your shoulder holster." replied Mr. Chen, who had just walked up behind them. "The suit is tailored so it is balanced, with no lines or traces." They both nodded their understanding. One at a time the guys were measured by Mr. Peters and every measurement was carefully recorded on a card he made out for each of them. When Mr. Peters was done with them, Dad called Denny and me over.
"Mr. Peters, I would like you to meet my sons, David and Dennis." Dad said. It felt really good. This is the first time Dad had introduced me to anyone and it really made me feel proud and special he claimed me as his son. Denny must have felt the same way, because he stood up straight and he had a big smile on his face.
"I am very pleased to meet you young gentlemen." Mr. Peters said, shaking hands with each of us. "I have known your Father for many years and he is a very fine man." He stood and beamed at us, looking us over from head to toe. I thanked him and so did Denny.
"The boys are going to need some dress up clothes." Uncle Dean said. "What do you recommend."
"Boys grow and change so rapidly," Mr. Peters replied, "I always feel more than one suit in their closet is wasteful. It should be worn as required and replaced on a regular basis, often every year, or less."
"Very sage advice." Mr. Chen commented. He had been looking through books of material samples and had recommended several to the 3 big guys for their suits.
"Yes, I think one suit at a time for them is a very good idea." Uncle Dean agreed and Dad nodded. "They will each need a suit and a sports jacket. I think a blazer for each might be beneficial and also they will need tuxes for formal dinners." Dad spoke with Uncle Dean for a moment and they discussed the matter back and forth. "Yes, Mr. Peters, we will go with those items." Mr. Peters measured both Denny and me very carefully. He said something about young men being more difficult to fit, because he liked to leave a little room to grow. Naturally as soon as he started measuring my hips and thighs, I started to get hard. By the time he checked the inside seam of my pants, twice, I was stretching the leg of my pants from the inside. I had closed my eyes to try to concentrate on other things and when I opened them I could tell by their faces that both Dad and Anson had noticed my trouble.
"And how does the young man dress ?" Mr. Peters asked Dad. Dad hesitated uncertain what to say.
"To the right." Anson stated. "Definitely to the right." I didn't know what they were talking about and I didn't think I was going to ask right now. Dad nodded his agreement and Mr. Peters made a note on his card." Materials were chosen for all the orders and arrangements were made for fitting appointments, next week and soon we were all saying good bye to Mr. Peters.
Dale slipped out ahead of us again and brought the limo around. We all piled in and sat where we did before. Mr. Chen was still carrying his umbrella and I wondered if he knew something which we did not about the weather.
"We go now to Wal-Mart." Mr. Chen announced. Dean nodded in agreement and Dale moved the car away from the curb. "We get good kid clothes, not fancy pantsy, no lasting, expensive, designing name junk." Mr. Chen informed everyone.
"You see, Denny," Uncle Dean said, "the reason I can afford to buy you bananas, is because Mr. Chen looks after most of the shopping." He had a big smile when he said it.
"That right, Mr. Dean." Mr. Chen confirmed. "And you no forget it." Mr. Chen had the final word on the subject. "We get boys snack now, too." Mr. Chen's word appeared to be law, until he objected to a stop at the fast-food outlet for a coke and some fries. I complained a lack of junk food could cause me to go into withdrawal. Denny pleaded a similar french fry addiction. The two guys up front expressed their preference for something greasy and cold. Even Dad said he didn't think the stop would hurt. There was a collective cheer when Uncle Dean indicated Dale should look for the big `M' sign. The limo took up four parking places, but Uncle Dean and Dale were absolute that we were not having any ketchup in the car.
Once on the road again, the trip took only minutes. Dale, of course, delivered us to the front entrance and then went to find a remote place to park the limo. Dad's instructions to Denny and me were very clear. We were to stay within an arm's reach of either him or Uncle Dean at all times. I wasn't too thrilled. Everyone else could wander around, but I had to be like a little kid, like Denny and stay with an adult. They seemed to forget that I lived on the street, by myself, for a long time. I tried not to be miserable about it, but I made sure Dad knew. We went into the department store and Uncle Dean asked me to push a cart for him. I found one and followed him into the Men's' clothing section. Mr. Peters had advised them to get most everything for me in a small man's size, cause if it didn't fit right now, it would very soon. I walked around the department, pushing the cart and he followed me, pointing at various items, asking if I liked this and that. We found slacks and jeans and shorts, which I could not see myself ever wearing and he would help me find the proper sizes and let me pick out the colours I preferred in each. He was going wild, wanting to get 10 of this or 6 of that and I kept reminding him what Mr. Peters had said about quickly outgrowing things. I think he was having a really good time and his excitement was easy to catch. I figured he was not able to do this with Jamie for a very long time, if ever and he was making up for lost opportunity.
We would see the others coming and going as they seemed to be doing their own thing. When we got to underwear, Uncle Dean asked what type I wanted. I told him I wanted white briefs, like Dad wears.
"Well, you know," he told me quietly, "he doesn't wear those all the time. Only, usually, when he is in a business suit." He had a big smile on his face and I knew he was up to something. I looked around and saw Dad was only over two isles from us, looking at pajamas with Denny. I asked what else Dad wore. "He really seems to like these boxer briefs for most of his casual activities," Uncle Dean pointed, "but for really special times, I believe he has a couple pair of these." He held up some very skimpy briefs which were basically a jock strap with a silk pouch.
"Dad, How ?" I asked, actually amazed at the idea my Dad could get his sizable equipment into one small pouch. Uncle Dean and I seemed to both have the same picture and turn red at the same time and glancing at each other we started to laugh.
"Something amusing going on here ?" Dad's voice boomed from behind us. He was standing there with his hands on his hips and Denny, standing next to him, was in exactly the same pose.
"Like now ?" I asked and Uncle Dean and I broke into wild, uncontrollable fits of laughter. Dad just stood there muttering something about having to keep the two of us apart and finally turned his back and dragged Denny back to what they were doing, with Denny loudly complaining he wanted to know what was so funny. Uncle Dean and I couldn't look at each other for the next few minutes, because every time we did, we started to laugh again. He eventually threw six pair of boxer briefs for me to try and three pair of white briefs into the cart and we moved along. I had not seen Dale, Jason or Anson for awhile and thought they had likely found some things of interest and forgotten about us. Mr. Chen appeared every now and then to show us some nice item he had found, always at `a very good buy' and then disappeared again, his long, black umbrella swinging from his arm.
A jewelry counter was off to one corner of the men's wear section and I went over to look at the rings they had out on display and some cuff link and tie pin sets. There were watches at the counter and although I really loved the watch Mr. Chen had given me in the hospital, I thought it might not look right with the new suit which had been ordered. I was just about to turn and ask Uncle Dean what he thought when a large, beefy hand landed on my shoulder and squeezed it tightly.
"Gottcha, ya lil......oompfft." "Click" was all I heard as the hand jerked off my shoulder. I turned around to find a bulky, middle aged, red faced man laying flat on his back, with Mr. Chen's foot pinning one of the man's upper arms to the floor and his very sharp, pointed umbrella held rigid against the man's Adams apple. Anson stood at his head with his gun cocked and aimed directly between the man's eyes. The expression on the man's face turned from anger to astonishment to absolute terror in a matter of seconds.
"Davidson, store security." he finally managed to rasp out in little more than a whisper after a moments pause. Anson uncocked his gun and holstered it and Mr. Chen stepped back and drew away his umbrella's point from the man's throat. The man got to his feet very slowly. He leaned on the counter for a moment and gasped several times as if he couldn't catch his breath. Then he turned toward us with his face bright red again.
"What is the matter with you people ? he bellowed. "I'm going to see you are all arrested and locked up forever."
"You do that." Anson responded without raising his voice. "You just assaulted the son of the Chief of Security for McAdams Corp." The colour drained from the man's face as he absorbed what Anson had said to him. "We just saved you from destroying what's left of your miserable life and career." Anson added. The man's mouth kept moving, but nothing was coming out.
"Him ?" he finally managed to ask in a hushed tone. "But he's the lousy, little street urchin who's been stealing stuff out of here all week." Anson stood there and shook his head back and forth.
"You better look again, fella." Anson said. "I can tell you for a fact he's hardly been out of my sight in the past week. You've made an error. A big one."
"What's going on here ?" my Dad's voice sounded upset. "Davey, are you all right."
"It's okay, Sir." Anson said loudly. "Mr. Davidson just made a small error, but we've been able to set things straight, haven't we Mr. Davidson ?" The defeated man just nodded emphatically.
"Davey, where's your Uncle Dean and why aren't you with him ?" Dad asked. Rather sternly I felt. Oh, oh, I thought. Something goes wrong and it's the kid who's going to get it in the end.
"Davey, oh there you are." Uncle Dean called out. "I'm sorry, son. I must have walked off and not realized you were still looking at those things. Did you find anything of interest ? Well come along, we can check it out later." I went over to where Uncle Dean was standing and he put his arm around my shoulder as we started off down the aisle, leaving the rest of them standing there.
"Thanks, Uncle Dean. You're a life saver. I think Dad was just about to thump me." I said to him quietly after we had moved away from the others.
"It's okay, this one time, Davey." he replied. "Your Dad has run interference for Jamie often enough that I owe him a few, but if you get more than an arm's length away from me again, I'll throw you to the wolves, understand."
"Yes, Sir." I confirmed. We had a basket full of items. I talked to Uncle Dean about what I had been looking at and he said I was right, but there was no rush and we could look at accessories the next time we were shopping. We then met with Dad and Denny. They also had their cart full. Dad went through our cart and Uncle Dean went through their cart and we all discussed items that were questionable. Mr. Chen oversaw the entire operation and made the final decision if an agreement couldn't be reached. No one argued with Mr. Chen. Dad made an observation that I had not selected more pajamas. I took him aside and explained I had to wear clothes to stay warm, when I was sleeping outside, but in a nice, warm, snug bed, I preferred to not wear anything at all. He said he understood, because he was the same way. He asked what about when I came charging over to his bed first thing in the morning, what was I going to do then. I told him if he and Uncle Dean could make the effort to pull on pajama bottoms, before we got there, I guessed I could make the same effort. He laughed and gave me a hug.
Our final stop on our afternoon shopping trip was a shoe store. Denny and I each got two new pair of dress shoes, two pair of runners, a pair of hiking boots, a pair of rain boots and a pair of riding boots. Dale bought Jason a pair of riding boots. I'm not really sure Jason totally appreciated the gift just then.
When we arrived back at the `castle', Mr. Chen took charge of all the parcels. He told us if we really needed something now, to let him know and he would get it, otherwise everything would be in our closet by tomorrow noon. It had been a really nice day, except for my little incident. Denny and I had both enjoyed the shopping trip, but more than all the things we received, it was the time we spent with the men. All of them. Each one was special to us and we appreciated what they gave us of their time and attention more than the items which had been purchased. We would try to make sure each of them realized how important he was to us.
Dinner tonight was to be served early. It was `dojo' night and the martial arts school was held from 7 o'clock to 9 o'clock. Dad said Denny and I could go to see if we were interested in participating. Dinner, of course, was in the main dining room. It was called chicken, but you couldn't pick it up to eat it like when it comes out of the bucket. It was just meat, with no bone and it had a white coloured sauce over it. It was actually really good. You had to cut it with your knife and Denny had a lot of trouble, but Dad showed him how to do it and coached him through it, without doing it for him. There were also mashed potatoes and they didn't have any lumps in them at all. The vegetables were carrots and green beans and they were heated, so they were still crispy. I liked them like that, when they're not all soft and squishy. Dessert was fresh strawberries cut up and served with whipped cream over them. Denny was told this is what he was getting, no banana.
When we went to our room to get ready to go to the class, Denny and I each found a martial arts uniform on our bed. Later on, we found out it is called a Fudogi' or Gi' (Gee) which means uniform. We each had a white belt with our uniform which was for beginners. I figured it showed the other students we were just starting, so they did not mistakenly beat us up. Dad came in to see how we were managing and told us to wear underwear under it, because sometimes your pants might slide down. We could wear a shirt under the top if we wanted, but Dad didn't have one on, so I wasn't going to wear one. I talked Denny into wearing an undershirt, so he wouldn't get cold.
The dojo' was located in an area on the other side of the locker room from the swimming pool. It was a gym, but not full size, it was like half a gym. There were some basketball hoops on the walls and the rest of the room was pretty bare except for a bunch of mats piled up in one corner. When we arrived with Dad, I was surprised at the number of people that were there. I saw some men I recognized from meeting them around the castle' and estate over the past two days. I knew some of them worked in the kitchen and some were gardeners. Jim and the men from the stables were there. There were other people who I had never seen before, too. All together there must have been at least 50 people. When they arrived, I noticed my three big guys had different coloured belts on their gis. Anson's belt was white. I found out later he had basic instruction at the Police Academy, but he had not taken formal training and so he would start off as a beginner. Dale was wearing a brown belt and Jason had a purple belt. They had both studied formally when they were in the Armed Services and were recognized as advanced students.
Mr. Chen arrived and he spoke to several people. I noticed everyone addressed him as Master Chen' or' Sensei' (Teacher). Dad and Uncle Dean were also addressed as' Sensei' and I found out later only those with Black Belts were considered teachers. At precisely 7 o'clock the three Sensei' stood at the front of the class and all three bowed to the group of students. The students, who had spaced themselves in lines and rows, all bowed back to the teachers. Denny and I were standing between Anson and Jason and Dale was in the row directly behind us. I was not happy about being up front, where everybody could see me and all the mistakes I was sure I was about to make. Master Chen announced there would be new students in attendance and all were expected to provide assistance and direction. The class was to begin with `Tai Chi' in solo form, which were a series of precise movements that incorporate all the stances and techniques of the art.
As the exercise started Dale told us just to follow along and try to do as many of the stances as we could. I watched the teachers as they flowed through the series and moved as I saw them move. It was not difficult and I found I seemed to know what the next position would be as we moved into each new stance. I was limited by the weight of the cast wrapped around my forearm, but in most of the movements I flowed from one to the next with little hesitation. Master Chen left his position in the instruction line and came down and stood in front of me watching my movements. After watching for a minute, he picked up the exercise in unison with me and we moved together in perfect synchronization. I had no problem with the movements, my body moved of its own accord without me directing it. At the end of the sequence, Master Chen and I stood facing each other. He bowed to me and I returned his bow. He then returned to his place in the middle of the instructor's line.
The class was next directed to split into small groups according to their level, to practice the elements of their level and each class was assigned a guide from the next senior level. Anson, Denny and I were all in the beginner group with three other men and Master Chen sent Uncle Dean over to instruct our group. Beginners learn how to fall. Our `Sensei' taught us the lesson for tonight and we practiced falling. He would not allow Denny and me to practice together, instead assigning us each to one of the adults we did not know. I found the task easy and apparently did it correctly. We all continued practicing and were eventually allowed to rotate partners, so we experienced individuals of all different heights and sizes. The two hours were gone before I knew it and soon we were all saying good night.
Most of the participants headed into the locker room to shower and from what I heard, most of them would then head into the pool. Dad asked if I wanted to go. I only thought about it for a moment and knew I wouldn't even make it through the showers without showing wood, so there was no point in going. It was Denny's bed time and as much as I wanted to be with him and Uncle Dean, I told him I would go up with Denny to shower and put him to bed. He told me he would be doing that, but I was welcome to join them and I liked his idea even better. Master Chen asked me to come and see him after my shower, so he could help me with my arm and our other project. I told him I would return.
We went right to our room, but realized the shower was not big enough for the three of us, so we collected our pajamas and went across the hall. Uncle Dean had felt he should spend some time around the staff and had chosen to go swimming with everyone. So did our three big guys. Dad told us our gi (uniform) didn't need cleaning, unless it got really dirty, or we sweat a lot. So they would be hung in our closet, when we went back to our room. I got to push the button on the wall tonight to start the shower up. Denny claimed rights for it next time. Dad wrapped my cast again and we had a nice, hot shower. Afterward, we bundled up in the big fluffy towels and Dad made sure we were all dry and into our pajamas. We waited while he put on some casual slacks and a golf shirt. Uncle Dean was right about the boxer briefs and I found myself laughing again when I thought about the other ones. Dad thought I was just kooky.
Back in our room, Denny settled into bed as I put on my robe and slippers and headed down to see Mr. Chen. He had taken me to his suite last night and we had sat in his lounge area. I found him there waiting for me and I greeted him when I entered the room. He didn't begin the `treatment' right away, he wanted to talk.
"Davey, did you enjoy the class tonight ?" he asked. I told him I had liked it very much and was looking forward to doing it again. "You have never studied the gentle arts before ?" I told him no', I had seen some people in the parks doing the Tai Chi' movements before, but I had never done them. "You did very well with all your lessons this evening." I thanked him for his compliment. He then did the thing with my arm where he holds the cast and my arm gets very hot. After that was done, we spent half an hour reading from my book and I found it was getting somewhat easier. He suggested I practice when I have some free time and said he would put a couple books in the table next to my bed. I thanked him again. "Do you know the way back to the Game Room, on your own, now ?" I assured him I did, so he said I could go on my own. Before I left I moved over to him and put my arms around him, giving him a gentle hug. He reached behind me and patted gently on my back. "You are a good boy. Now off you go."
I found my way to the Games room with no problem. All the big guys were there. Anson was playing a game of Solitaire and the other four had started a poker match.
"Wouldn't they let you play ?" I teased Anson.
"No, they wouldn't." he said. "Somehow they knew I was too good and they wouldn't have a chance if I played." He was very serious and I almost thought that he meant it.
"The truth," Jason told me, "is when he plays, he has to go to the bathroom every five minutes to look at his list and see if a pair beats three of a kind." Everybody chuckled and I knew for certain Anson had been pulling my leg.
"You want to play something ?" Anson asked. I nodded and went over and picked out a game of Snakes and Ladders. We played for about 15 minutes and then Dad looked at his watch.
"It's time for bed, Sport." he said. "Let me finish this hand and I'll go up with you to tuck you in."
"I'll go." Anson volunteered. "If it's okay with you and Davey." Dad looked at me and I nodded my head, `yes'. "Good, it will give us a little time to talk together." We put the game away and I went over and gave Dad a hug and a kiss on the cheek. He hugged me and gave me a kiss on the forehead. I gave Uncle Dean a hug and he gave me one back. I said good night to Jason and Dale and then Anson and I headed up to my room.
"I'll be in to make sure your covered up, when I go to bed," Dad yelled after me. "And try not to let Denny loose too early in the morning." Uncle Dean said something about `seconding that thought'.
The Prophesy of the Guardians
The House of Chen, being both old and honourable, shall be the Caretakers of this vision of the yet to come.
From this time forth, one son will be born to the House of Chen in each generation to the number of 110.
These males shall be the Caretakers and shall guard this knowledge until its time arrives.
In the world of new beginnings, a Shogun (Leader/Prince) of infinite wealth, after being lost and found again by his
Samurai (Warrior Chief) will both learn that their real riches lie elsewhere. To them will come four treasures to be nurtured and guided. They will father the four to manhood.
Each Guardian will possess gifts.
One will hold the gift of dreams and control of the emotions.
One will hold the gift of looking into and influencing the minds of his fellow man and knowing truth.
One will hold the gift of communication and know all languages, written and spoken.
One will hold the gift of prophesy and he will be the catalyst to the power of the four.
Each will sense the presence of others.
Together, as one, the Guardians will hold a gift never allowed before to man.
There are dark forces and men who fear the power of the Guardians and would use it for their own purposes.
Care must be taken to preserve them while they grow and develop their skills. They must learn to love and trust, so that they may serve the needs of mankind.
