Section 40
Debra - Saturday night
Jamie, Ted, Mr. Chen and I were in the Receiving line at a quarter to four, to start greeting the guests as they arrived. I was actually excited about doing this. The memory of Dean's Mother and Father ,standing with me the last time I had done this, some ten years past, filled me with a warmth I had not known, for a long, long time. It always amazed me, how they knew the name of each member of their staff and often, many of the family members who accompanied them. A short time after we started, I found Ted and Jamie, were the same way and could identify people as they walked toward us.
We were situated on the edge of the gardens, at the rear of the `castle', on a walkway from the parking area to the carnival location. A canvass awning had been erected, over the area where we stood, so the sun did not beat steadily down on us and a cool breeze, made the day as perfect as anyone could have asked. The staff brought a variety of relatives with them. Sometimes complete families of parents and children arrived together, other times a staff member, with his nieces and nephews would come, parents and grandparents and assorted in-laws were also brought. Occasionally, a young swain with his date on his arm, would also make an appearance. I found on a regular basis, people I knew were arriving and seeing old acquaintances, was a distinct pleasure.
After a half hour, Dean, Davey, Kevin and Denny relieved us. I stood back for a few moments and saw the boys greeting not only staff, but many of their guests as if they had known them for years. Then it dawned on me.
"You guys cheat." I accused Jamie, who was standing beside me. He simply got a big smile on his face and never said a word. Of course the boys knew everyone's names. They were the Guardians. It set me back, when the realization actually hit me. They were the Guardians and my son was one of them. A chill ran through me. Jamie reached over and put an arm around my shoulder.
"You'll get use to it." he said. "It just takes a little time."
"I'm never going to get use to you being in my head." I told him. "I'm not going to like it."
"That's just for this trip." he replied. "We're just giving you some support to help you get over the shock."
"What do you mean `We'" ? I asked.
"I've been helping you organize your thoughts." he answered. "I haven't changed or effected anything, I've only been supporting you. And Davey has been supporting your emotions. Again, he has not done anything, except take some of the fears and worry from you. Have you notice that you haven't had a cigarette since you arrived ?" I thought about it. The last cigarette I had was in the taxi last night. I had not craved or even thought of one since then. "Trust us Mom. We would not harm you."
"I believe you, Jamie," I said, "but I don't know whether I believe you, because you're making me, or whether it's really me."
"It's really you, Mom." he assured me. "I'm not forcing anything on you, it wouldn't be allowed." I decided to trust them. I'm not sure I really had any choice.
"You said that before, about not being allowed to." I queried. "Who prevents you ?"
"The fourth Guardian is a catalyst through which our gifts are filtered." he told me. "He accepted imprinting from two men of good character and their ethics are the guide he uses." I looked over into his eyes.
"Your Dad and Ted." I said. He nodded. I thought carefully, about all he had said. "I think he made a very good choice." Jamie smiled at me and nodded.
Our half hour rest was up and it was time to relieve the other team. We went back to greeting, as the flow of people continued steadily. This was our last turn. We would be done at five fifteen and the other team would spend until a quarter to six. Those arriving after that time, would be cleared by security. It dawned on me the boys had been providing the security monitoring for this first two hours. They would know, if anyone came through the receiving line, who should not be there. I looked around and noted there were half a dozen armed security men within six feet of us, more than enough to stop anyone Jamie indicated needed review. I looked over at him and he turned, smiled at me and nodded, confirming my thoughts.
As we finished, Jamie asked me if I wanted to find Eduardo and take a walk through the carnival to see where everything was. I agreed and I asked a general question, to no on in particular, if anyone knew where Eduardo had gone. Everyone was saying they didn't, but I saw Denny turn and stare hard at Jamie. Jamie turned around and stared back at him.
"Eduardo is with Digger." Jamie told me. "They will be here soon." Within five minutes, Digger came racing out of the building. Eduardo was close behind him. Digger came over to us and apologized for keeping us waiting. We headed off toward the carnival.
It was a marvelous place. The smells and sights and sounds were wonderful. It reminded me of a carnival I had visited as a child and the magic it had meant for me. There were booths of games, where cardboard horses ran races and wheels spun and balls bounced into holes and tents where bingo was played and beer was served. There were rides that whirled and twirled and tilted and bounced. Tests of strength and weight guessing, age guessing and slight of hand displays. Food booths serving pizza and hot-dogs and hamburgers and candy floss and caramel apples with lemonade and soda pop. Things for the eye, nose and mouth. Tests of dexterity and bumper cars testing your durability. And most of all there were people, laughing and cheering and yelling and smiling and forgetting everything, except the fun and excitement with which they were surrounded.
We walked along, taking in all the sights. Jamie reacted as any 13 year old, seeing something and telling me excitedly, he wanted to do that and then, spotting something else he wanted to try. We walked around the entire area. I finally asked what he was waiting for and he looked at me as though I had asked the strangest question in the world. "My brothers." was his single response and I realized he was no longer alone. He belonged.
Then they were there. The other three, plus the two added this afternoon. Gathered around each other, all talking at once. Each wanting to know if someone had seen this, or anyone done that. I looked around and saw the familiar faces of their shadows, in the background waiting patiently, until decisions were made and plans formulated. Then a quick kiss on the cheek from Jamie and a group, "Bye, Aunt Debra" and they were gone. Even in the midst of the music and the crowd, it now seemed oddly quiet.
Dean and Ted came walking along and asked if we wanted to drop by the Beer Tent. We strolled along and occasionally would catch sight of a couple of our boys on one of the twisting, turning rides, mouths wide open, no doubt screeching at the top of their lungs.
"How come you guys aren't out doing the rides ?" I wanted to know.
"We'll be called to duty soon enough." Ted told me. "Sooner than later, one or more of them will decide, we are not having enough fun. They will then seek us out and hunt us down. Once found, we will be dragged, protesting that we are fine and they should go have some more fun, to the rides they have pre- tested and judged to be the roughest, most unnerving and unsettling of all. We will then be conjoled into multiple tours of each ride, accompanied each time by a different companion, so they may first hand witness each response we provide, to every jolt or sudden turn."
"Following that," Dean continued, "we will be asked to display skills of strength and intellect far beyond the capability of mortal man. Then, expected to eat and drink a combination of food and beverage that would send chef' into fits and ravings. Once filled, we will be subjected to a return to the roughest, most upsetting rides that have been experienced. This is normally followed by six to ten sessions of bumper cars', during which the goal of each one of them, will be to crash into any `Dad' who comes within their range of vision."
"This is not psychotic mis-adventure or intentional harassment." Ted stated. "it is simply a traditional rite of passage, boys are compelled to impose upon the fathers."
"We know all this," Dean assured me, "because it's what we did to our Dads."
"My god," I breathed with relief, "I'm so glad I'm a woman."
"Your just fortunate we didn't have a daughter." Dean said. We all laughed.
We had reached the Beer Tent. Picking up four mugs and a couple pitchers, we went and sat far enough from the `oompha' band, we could hear ourselves and each other speak. We watched the people around us and those passing by the tent. Many waved to us in greeting, as they went on their ways. Happy faces abounded. The calling and laughter of children filled the air. It was a happy time for a great number of people. For the first time in many years, I was one of them.
Time passed without notice as we talked and laughed and visited some more. I'm not sure where he came from, but I looked down, between where Ted and I were sitting and there stood Denny. He smiled at me, an appealing smile that could melt your heart, or light it up. He turned toward Ted and without his saying a word, Ted reached over, without even looking at him and picked him up, setting him on his knee.
"What's up, little man ?" Ted asked the boy.
"I'm missing you, Dad." he replied. "Will you come and ride with me ?"
"Wouldn't Dale ride with you ?" Ted wanted to know.
"Oh, yeah, he rode a lot." Denny told him. "He just isn't you."
"I'll bet you'll never find a defense for that answer." I kidded Ted. He just raised his eyebrows and shrugged his shoulders. Denny leaned back against him and looked comfortable and very much at home.
Ted looked around and spotted Dale sitting quietly, back about three tables. He waved at him to come over.
"I hear you've been on the rides." Ted said to Dale.
"Yes, Sir. Sure have." he replied. "Trust me. You don't want to go on the one that has you upside down most of the time." Everyone chuckled.
"Sit with us and have a beer, Dale." Ted told him. Dale mentioned he was on duty. "It's okay. I've just been informed, by my superior here, I'm being called to duty."
"Dad, we have to go right now." Denny said. "Kevin's been hurt." He slid down from Ted's lap and grabbed his hand. We followed behind them as Denny led the way. As we headed across the grounds, we ran into Digger, who was looking for us. Ted picked Denny up and we followed Digger. There was a crowd forming over at one of the rides. When we broke through them, we saw Kevin on the ground with Anson, Jason and Brian keeping the crowd back. A blanket was thrown over Kevin and Jamie and Davey were kneeling beside him.
Ted spoke to his men and Jason told him Kevin had been coming off a ride and like a 16 year old boy will do, had tried to jump over a metal bar barrier. He caught his foot on the top rail and went over head first, landing on his shoulder. While they were talking, Mr. Chen arrived and examined Kevin.
"Has an ambulance been called ?" Ted asked.
"We wanted to," Jason said, "but Jamie said not to." Ted walked over to Jamie.
"We need an area, visually blocked off, with a table." Jamie told Ted, before he could speak. "Now, please Uncle Ted." Ted turned to his men and told them what was needed. Mr. Chen came over to him.
"His collar bone is broken." Mr. Chen stated. "That is the only injury, other than pride." Jason came back and said they had the spot ready which Jamie had requested. Dean instructed the security men to help Kevin up and take him into the nearby tent. When it was done, Dean thanked the members of the crowd and asked them to go back to their fun. He assured them, Kevin would be okay.
"Help him lay down on the table." Davey instructed the men. Kevin did not seem to be having any pain, as they helped him to lay flat on the table. The men left the tent. "Dad, Uncle Dean, Aunt Debra and Dale, please come in the tent with us." Those requested went in with the other two boys. "Jason, close the tent flap and then let no one else enter, please." Jason closed the tent.
Davey asked the four adults to stand, one each at the four corners of the tent. When we were in place, Denny moved to the end of the table, where Kevin's head lay and Davey and Jamie moved on either side of the table, even with Kevin's waist. They joined hands, forming a triangle. There was complete silence in the tent. I became aware Kevin's body was rising off the table and soon, it was hovering about six inches over it. I could see yellow shafts of light, shining down from where the boy's hands joined together, shining on Kevin. A couple minutes later, the yellow lights vanished and Kevin's body settled back onto the table. The boys released each other and Kevin sat up and swung his legs over the edge of the table. A loud noise of voices, raised and arguing, could be heard from outside the tent.
"It's okay, Jason." Kevin called out. "You can open the flap and let Tim come in." The flaps on the tent flipped open and Tim came rushing in.
"Kevin, are you all right ?" Tim asked. There was a great deal of worry and concern expressed in his voice.
"I'm just fine, Tim. There's no need to worry." he assured the distraught man. "You know my brothers are always ready to look after me." He said `thank you' to each of the other boys and then led Tim out of the tent. I looked around at the faces of the other adults.
"You've seen this before." I said to Dale, noting the lack of reaction on his face. He nodded.
"As our Protector, Dale has sworn not to divulge what he knows, about the workings of the Guardians." Denny spoke. "He first witnessed the healing, my brothers performed for me, last Wednesday morning."
"Why did Kevin feel no pain ?" I asked.
"He actually did." Jamie replied. "I blocked the pain from his mind, so he was not aware of it." Dean, Ted and I stood there not knowing what to say. "Let's get back to the carnival. Dad, there's a really great ride we want to take you and Uncle Ted on."
Jason - Saturday night
This had to be one of the best parties I ever remember attending. Imagine, a whole carnival to explore. Rides and games and food everywhere you turned. I had to keep reminding myself I was on duty, shadowing Kevin, not because it presented any problem, but because I was having such a good time doing it. Kevin had been in the Receiving Line for two sessions during the first two hours people were arriving. I hung around, just to keep an eye on things and also to see who was attending. I was surprised how many of the staff I actually knew, after such a short time and I spent most of my time meeting relatives of those I associated with daily. It was a great feeling, seeing everyone so excited and raring to go.
I had a stroll through the carnival grounds earlier, before things got underway, to familiarize myself with the layout and note where the pathways led. Always a good idea to know the terrain ahead, if you can. The carnival people were very friendly and helpful with the few questions I had. I found out, a great many of them had been here before, several years ago, when Dean's Mother and Father ran the place. They seemed pleased to have an opportunity to return and commented they remembered how well they had been received and treated the previous visit.
When Kevin had finished his duties, we were all off, initially to find Jamie, and then to hit the rides. We older guys left it open as to whether the boys wanted us on the rides with them, or separately. If the four boys went on a ride, then two of us would ride, either with them, or behind them. The other three would stay on the ground. Dale and Brian usually rode, seeing as they had the two eight year olds. About an hour into their play, Denny started to tire out. He wanted to find his Dad, so Dale took him, while the rest of us continued on. Coming off one of the rides, Kevin, Jamie, Davey, Len and Gus were walking down the ramp together. Kevin suddenly took off, yelling at the other boys, "Watch this !". I yelled at him, but he leapt up and tried to hurdle over a metal bar fence. His toe caught on the top rail and head over heels he went, landing on his shoulder and flipping backward onto the ground. I swear I could hear the `snap' as his collar bone gave way. We all ran over to him within seconds. He was laying on the ground, on his back, groaning, obviously in pain.
"Brian, cover Jamie." I yelled. "Digger, go and find Ted."
"Should I have an ambulance called ?" he asked, as he headed off.
"No. Don't do that." Jamie said to him. "It will be all right." Digger looked at me and I shrugged my shoulders and shook my head `no'. People started to gather around and I asked Anson and Brian to keep them back. Brian put his brothers off to the side, out of the way. He had found a blanket and threw it to me.
"You okay, Kevin ?" I asked as I threw the blanket over him. He was moaning and I could see a look of pain on his face. Jamie and Davey came over beside him and knelt down.
"Kevin." Jamie said to him quietly. "Look at me." Kevin moved his head slightly and looked into Jamie's eyes. The look of pain left his face and he stopped groaning. "It's still broken, even if it doesn't hurt any longer. Stay still and don't move."
"Are you okay ?" I asked him again.
"I'm fine, Jason." he told me in a calm, normal voice. "Don't worry, everything is just fine." Here he was calming me. I saw Digger and Ted coming, so I stood and helped Anson and Brian keep the crowd back.
Ted came over to me and I told him what had happened. He then went to speak with Jamie.
"Why weren't you watching him more carefully ?" Dale questioned.
"I had my eyes on him the whole time." I said, slightly resenting the inference of my negligence. "Unlike Denny, a sixteen year old, doesn't always ask, before he does something stupid." He actually glared at me.
"We need an area, visually blocked off, with a table." Ted told us. I had seen a smaller tent earlier and went quickly to check on it. It was just about 30 feet down the trail. Returning, I told Ted. We were asked to help Kevin over to it.
"It's all right, Jason.." Dale said to me. "I'll make sure he gets there." He was really starting to piss me off, but I knew this wasn't the time, or place to make an issue of it. When Kevin was in the tent and laying on the table, I was asked to close the flap and keep everyone else out. About five minutes later, I saw Tim headed toward us at full speed.
"Jason, Jason," he puffed as he ran up to me. "Kevin, how is he ? Where is he ? What happened ?"
"He's okay, Tim." I told him. "They're helping him now."
"In there ?" he questioned, looking at the tent. "I have to see him." He moved toward the tent and I had to step in front of him. "Let me in there, Jason. I have to be with him." He was very insistent.
"I'm sorry, Tim, really." I said, holding him back. Anson and Digger moved up behind him. "No one can go in there right now. I'm sure they'll bring you to him, as soon as possible."
"Please, Jason." He put his hands on my upper arms and laid his head on my shoulder. I knew how upset he was and put my arms around him.
"It's okay, Jason." Kevin called out from the tent. "You can open the flap and let Tim come in." Tim's head popped up and I smiled at him and lifted the flap. In a minute or two, Tim and Kevin came out of the tent together. Kevin appeared fine, as if nothing had happened to him. I heard the conversation in the tent among those remaining. As the others vacated the tent, Ted and Denny were walking slowly, together with Dale. Tim came over to me, with Kevin trailing behind him.
"Jason, I'm really sorry, about giving you a hard time." Tim apologized. "I was just so worried about Kevin, I didn't know what to do. Thank you for putting up with me."
"No problem at all." I told Tim. "You certainly aren't the one who needs to apologize." Dale turned and glanced at me and I glared at him. Ted turned toward me and I think may have seen me glaring before I had a chance to look away.
"You did a great job, Jason." he called over to me. "These little situations are destined to happen when you're dealing with kids and teens. A cool head and team work is always the successful approach. Thanks very much." I felt vindicated. Dale glanced at me again and I ignored him and walked away with Tim and Kevin.
The boys were trying to drag Dean and Ted off, to do some rides with them. Ted begged off, claiming a prior commitment to Denny, to go on some of his favourite rides. They told him they would get him later and proceeded to take Dean and Tim hostage, so I was off again with them. Dale headed out with Denny and Ted.
We all met to eat about 9 o'clock. The boys had been going steady right up to then. Rides and games had been tested any number of times, depending on how they had been rated. Food had been left pretty much alone and I figured there had been some type of unspoken agreement to wait to eat together. All of our groups seemed to converge on the eating area at once, loaded with their selections. I noted where Dale was seated and the empty chair beside him, but I preferred to sit in the group I was with. I continued to ignore him glancing toward me.
Quite a friendship had been developing while we had been exploring the rides. Brian and Anson were already well established in their friendship, but I noted that Len, Davey and Jamie had really hit it off. It was hard to believe they had only met this afternoon, they seemed like they had been together for years. Gus and Denny were managing. I had never really noticed how shy Denny could be. It would take a while for them to warm up to each other, but they had made some headway. Denny seemed to be more outgoing and friendly, when he had Ted along, than when Dale had accompanied him. But then with my current attitude about Dale, I might not be seeing this clearly.
Brian's mother, Lily had caught up to us, while the boys were on the rides and had kept up with them right to this time. She was a lady in her early forties and it was easy to see where her boys inherited their good looks. She had the same blonde hair and a shapely figure to go with it. Men's heads turned often when she walked by, I noticed. She had a pleasing personality and was cheerful and pleasant to be around. Her boys listened when she spoke, even the eldest. She and Debra hit it off and spent a good bit of the evening together. I heard her thank Dale, for "smacking Brian down", when he needed it and then giving him the chance to prove himself. I must admit, I was proud of him for doing that as well.
About 10:PM Ted and Mrs. Taylor pulled the plugs on Denny and Gus. It must have been time, because neither of the boys even tried to offer an argument. I don't know about Gus, but I believe Denny was asleep, even before Ted had carried him as far as the building. The other boys had slowed down considerably. I suggested one more round to them, to try their favourite rides, one more time and then a swim in the pool. That idea was endorsed unanimously. With Denny off to bed, Dale had now joined our grouping, but we were not talking to each other by this time.
We checked out the pools on the way in to get our bathing suits and no one was swimming. As I walked through the hallways, I knew Dale was behind me. I left the door open for him, when I entered our suite and went straight through to the bathroom, where my suit was left to dry. When I came out of the bathroom, the bedroom door was closed and Dale was leaning against it.
"Ted chewed my ass and spit it out." he said to me. "He told me I was taking everything too seriously again and if I couldn't let myself rely on you, I wasn't capable of leading the others. He said if I did it again, he would expect my resignation as Captain. I'm sorry if I embarrassed you in front of the others."
"Is that what you think this is about ?" I asked him. "Embarrassing me in front of the others. If that's what you think, then from what you just told me, you didn't listen to Ted at all. Get out of my way, I have a Guardian to look after." I grabbed the door knob and pushed him aside with the door as I opened it.
Now I was really angry. He had done it, he had been told about it and he still didn't get it.
