Twilight Tale- Chapter 4

The wolf had dashed past us with what I would call an unnaturally fast speed. I craned my neck to look over Jacob's shoulder to see where it had gone and at the same time, Jacob started to run. I caught a glimpse of the wolf when something else stole my attention. All I saw was what looked like flames, dancing in the wind. Only, there was no wind...And those weren't flames.

It was a woman, with bright red hair. I only saw her for a second and I could tell that she was extremely gorgeous but, there was something terrifying about her. Her eyes were a crimson red that stood in great contrast against her pale, white skin.

I gripped my arms tightly around Jacob's neck as his pace quickened. He was sprinting now and we arrived back at the truck in what seemed like seconds. Jacob put me down so that I was standing, but kept a firm grip around my waist, making sure I didn't apply too much pressure on my ankle as he opened my door and lifted me into my seat.

I was shaking now. I'm not sure if it was from the wolf or seeing that woman..I was freaking out just trying to process what had happened. Jacob got in the truck and started the engine. As soon as he released the clutch, he immediately slammed his foot down on the gas pedal and we were off..

By the time we pulled into the driveway of Jacob's home, I had come to the conclusion that I was crazy. What other explanation could there be? When the car stopped I opened my door. Jacob hopped out and ran over to my side.

"Here, let me help you." He said, attempting to pick me up again.

"No, no, no." I said quickly. "I think I can manage."

To be honest, I didn't want to be touched. I had a sick feeling in my stomach and if Jacob carried me that'd just make it worse. Jacob kept and eye on me as I limped my way toward his front door, walking close enough to catch me just in case I did a nose dive. He held the front door open as I stepped into his home. It was a small place, but it had a `homey' feel to it. I guided myself to the small couch in his living room and slowly sat down.

"Do you have any ice?" I asked, gently sliding off my left shoe to get a better look at the damage.

"Uh...Yeah." He replied, moving into the kitchen and opening the freezer. He came back with a sandwich bag filled with ice wrapped in some paper towels.

"Thanks." I said, taking the ice from him.

"Does it still hurt pretty badly?" he asked, crouching down beside me.

"It's not as bad as it was earlier, but it's still aching." I winced as I felt my ankle throb.

"Do you want a Tylenol or something?"

"No, I think I'll be fine without the meds."

"Okay well, I need to make a few calls. Will you be fine alone for a few minutes? I'll be right there in the other room." He said, pointing over his shoulder.

"Yeah, you go ahead. I'll just watch TV. "I said, picking up the remote that was sticking out from between the cushions of the couch, and turned the television on as Jacob walked into the other room. I was flipping through the channels, aimlessly, when I came across a program on the discovery channel. It was some documentary on cheetahs. From what I remembered from biology about cheetahs, they were supposed to be the fastest mammals on earth, reaching speeds of 60 mph. The screen showed a cheetah chasing and catching a gazelle. I tried visualizing the wolf from the forest, running against the cheetah. The winner of that race was clear.

So apparently Forks has some steroid pumped wolves running around its forests? I let out a sigh of frustration as I sat back, resting my head on the back of the couch. "Where the hell is Bella and what was so urgent that she couldn't even tell me she was leaving? I asked myself, staring up at the ceiling.

I sat up abruptly. I had completely forgotten about the woman from the forest. She seemed to be as fast as the wolf, if not faster. And her eyes..I had never seen anything like them, except for contacts maybe, but that doesn't explain how fast she was moving. With her pale, immaculate beauty, the first image that popped into my mind...was of the Cullens.

Jacob returned with a smile on his face.

"I just got off the phone with Charlie. I told him you'd be staying here tonight, since Bella's gonna stay over at the Cullen's place."

"What do you mean you told him I'd stay here tonight? Why can't you just drop me back off at my house..I mean no offense, but I don't really know you. This is, after all, my first day here.."

Jacob sat down next to me.

"I called Bella before talking to Charlie." He paused, looking down at his hands, contemplating on what to say next.

"In the morning, I'll take you over to the Cullen's place. Bella said that she wanted to explain in person what's going on."

I fell silent and absorbed everything Jacob had said. Finally, I'd get some answers..They'd just better be worth the trouble. I knew something was different about the Cullens and I could sense some hostility towards them coming from Jacob. I looked up at him. He'd changed the channel to some show, all about cars, and was leaning forward with his chin resting on both of his hands, staring intently at the screen. It was a few minutes into the show when I realized how hot it'd become. Jacob didn't appear to be bothered, but I was a little uncomfortable. I figured since the couch was so small and Jacob was so large, that probably had something to do with it. We were sitting close enough for our legs to rub against each other.

"Hey Jacob..?" I tapped him on the arm. His skin was burning up. He looked at me quizzically as I placed my hand over his forehead.

"How long have you been like this?" I asked about to take some of my ice and place it on his head.

"Oh, about that..." He said with a smirk. "I'll explain it to you tomorrow."

"But.." I began, standing up in protest.

"Just relax." He said standing up with me. "You've had a pretty long day..Why don't you go to sleep? You can use my bed...Or just chill on the couch with me."

At that moment Jacob was so convincing. We were standing pretty close, I could feel his breath on my face. He was so tall that he had to bend over when he stood up, or else he would've hit his head on the ceiling.

"Um..I'll hang out here for awhile..I guess." I said, taking my seat again. Jacob sat as well.

"But Jacob.."I said, becoming serious. He turned towards me once more.

"Tomorrow...Promise me that you'll tell me everything, no bullshit." I stared into his eyes again, like in the forest.

"It's a promise." He said, with a nod.

And with that, we continued watching TV until I dozed off, with thoughts of what tomorrow would bring..

Okay so that's the end of Chapter 4. Sorry it took so long..I hope no one has given up on the story lol! I had intended it to be a lot longer but as I was typing it, I decided to cut the original ending and save it for the next chapter. Again, email me at jonellsocool@aol.com to let me know what you thought of the story, or if you have any questions for myself.
