Chapter One

How it all started

Coby stood in the corner not knowing what to do. He was trembling with fear he knew what was coming to him it had happened many times before. It was nothing new to him, just something that happened on a weekly, sometimes daily basis.

He looked around, there was nowhere for him to escape. He was surrounded by pallets of beer on both sides and Joshua was standing in front of him.

"What the fuck were you thinking bitch!" Joshua yelled at Coby.

"I'm sorry. I won't do it again."

Joshua was much taller than Coby. He was around six foot two blond hair that had brown roots showing from a poorly done job on his hair. His face was long, narrow with a pointed chin. His two top front teeth hung out of his mouth like rabbit teeth. When he spoke it was soft like a girl's voice with a terrible wisp.

"Damn right you won't do it again!" Josh shouted.

Coby looked up at Josh from the corner he was cowered down into. His green eyes filled with fear the whole time he was looking at Josh.

"Please don't," Coby begged.

"How else are you gonna learn bitch. You give me your check. I take care of all the money; you don't get a dime of it."

"It won't happen again. I promise."

"You are filled with nothing but empty promises." Josh grabbed hold of Coby's shirt collar and made him stand at attention.

Standing up you could see more of Coby. He was shorter than Josh probably about five foot ten. His light brown hair was cut short, with side burns extending to his ear lobes.

"Josh stop," Coby pleaded.

"Don't tell me what to do you little bitch!" Josh shouted even louder than before.

Josh raised his hand, Coby closed his eyes he knew what was going to happen. This had been going on for years. He tried to get away, but never succeeded in doing so.

Coby waited and waited for Josh to his him. It seemed as if he wasn't going to hit him like he always does. He opened his eyes and saw why Josh hadn't hit him.

Edith, one of the cashiers at the store, had heard Josh yelling at Coby. She came back there just as Josh was about to hit Coby and grabbed hold of his arm which she still had a tight grasp on.

Edith was a bigger woman. She was strong and she had a temper that stemmed from her Native American background.

Edith let go of Josh's arm and shoved him into the pallet of beer behind him as hard as she could.

Josh was stunned. He knew Edith hated him because she made it known that she could stand to even look at his ugly face.

He knew that he was ugly but didn't care. He always kept telling Coby that he was the only one for him and that Coby was ugly and too fat to get anyone better than himself.

Edith wrapped her hands around Josh's neck as tight as she could. She could see his face turning red and he was gasping for breath. She didn't care. She looked him in the eyes, giving him the most evil look she could.

"I swear if I ever see you lay a hand on Coby again I will kill you." Edith threatened. "Do you understand what I just said.

He tried to talk but couldn't so he just nodded his head that he understand her.

"Now get your ass out of here. I don't wana see you again." Edith told him.

She let go of his neck and shoved him to the floor. He just lay there for a minute looking up at her.

"Get on out of here I mean what said too!"

Josh knew that she meant what she said so he got up and walked out the door of the stockroom.

Edith placed an arm around Coby. "You ok Coby hun?"

He nodded his head. "Yeah I am fine now, but when I get home I am gonna get it."

"You wana come stay the night with me?"

"No. That will only make him madder. I don't wana do it."

"Why don't you just leave that asshole? You can do so much better."

Coby just shrugged his shoulders.

Ricky Walker sat in his apartment alone, like he had done for the past couple of months. He lived with his parents until his dad got so bad because of schizophrenia that he couldn't bare to live at home anymore. He was talking to his best friend Korbin Stumbaugh and started crying into his phone one night. The next day Korbin said he talked to his mom and she said she wanted him to come live with them.

Things were going good living with Korbin and his mom. The downfall was that every time Korbin got a girlfriend Ricky would get upset. He wouldn't show it to Korbin, but he felt like neither he nor Korbin needed a girlfriend as long as they had each other. He didn't know what these feelings meant at the time.

It all came to an end and Ricky was kicked out of the house. Korbin's mom came home from work early one day with a headache. She saw that Ricky's car was in the driveway so she decided she would poke her head in Ricky's room and say hi.

When she did she was in for a surprise. She never could have imagined Ricky doing what he was doing.

He was on his knees naked. There was a guy, whom she had never seen, standing in front of him naked and Ricky was bopping up and down on his dick. The guy was moaning Ricky's name.

Her draw dropped at what she saw.

"Excuse me!" She shouted.

They stopped their activities immediately. The guy's face turned bright red. Ricky's would have if it wasn't for his dark caramel complexion.

She looked at Ricky's friend. "You need to leave!"

He immediately pulled his clothes on and left.

Ricky thought everything was ok. Korbin's mom left and went to her room and wasn't heard from until later that night.

Ricky and Korbin were sitting in the computer room playing on the internet when his mom came into the room.

"Boys." They both turned around and looked at her.

"Yes," they said in unison.

"There comes a time in our lives that we must move on, be on our own." She looked at Ricky. "As you know I am going to be a grandmother soon and I would like to use your room as a nursery. You originally were supposed to stay with us for only a few weeks. I need you to find your own place in a month please."

With that she turned and left heading back to her bedroom.

Ricky looked at Korbin with tears in his eyes. "I guess this is it buddy. You wana move out and get an apartment with me?"

"I can't dude. It's too expensive."

"How the hell do you think I feel? I make seven dollars and twenty five cents an hour and I am expected to live on my own. Some friend you are."

Ricky got up left the room and went to his where he cried for hours. He knew why he was being asked to move out; it was because of what Korbin's mom had seen earlier. He was somewhat relieved that she hadn't told Korbin about it. Ricky was so confused about everything in his life at that moment.

The month went by and Ricky found an apartment. It was a one bedroom, rent $333.50, and pay your own utilities. Korbin came by every night after he got off work to visit. It wasn't until one night he was supposed to come over that he never showed up.

Ricky tried calling to see where he was but he got a message that said his number had been disconnected. Ricky was upset and worried about his best friend.

The next morning he drove to his house. He knocked on the door, but there was no answer. He walked around to Korbin's bedroom window and started tapping on it until Korbin woke up.

He raised the window so he could talk to Ricky.

"What do you want so early dude?" He asked Ricky.

"I was kinda worried about you. You never came by last night and when I tried calling you it said your number was disconnected."

"Oh."

"Oh what?" Ricky asked.

"Mom forgot to pay the bill."

"You could have called me from the house phone."

"Didn't think about it dude. You gotta go mom is still here."

Ricky left and went back home. Later that night after he had gotten off work he received a phone call. The caller id was private. He answered it anyhow. It was Korbin on the phone.

He explained that his mom changed his number because she didn't think Ricky was a good influence on him. Ricky wanted to tell him why she thought that but he was scared to loose a friend. Besides, he didn't even know how he felt about all this yet.

Korbin was supposed to come by later when he got off work, but he had called and said his mom wanted him home because it was storming badly. So he was left there bored by himself.

He sat at his computer browsing profiles on MySpace. For some reason he was browsing the gay profiles in his area. He didn't even know why he was doing this. One in particular caught his attention. His name was Jason. He looked just like the cashier from the grocery store earlier in the week.

He clicked add and sent a message "whats up?"

The friend request was accepted a few minutes later and Ricky got a new message.

Jason87: NMH just chillin' not liking this weather.

Ricky20034: Cool. So you look like this sacker from the grocery store the other day

Jason87: J Yup that'd be me. You are really hot btw

Ricky20034: Um thanks I guess

Jason87: so have u ever had a blow job

Ricky20034: No. Why?

Jason87: so what would you say if I asked you to come over so I can blow you.

Ricky20034: No way you are in high school and you live with your parents. Not a good thing to do while the parents are home.

Jason87: I am 18 btw so it doesn't matter. You could come and get me and we could go to your place.

Ricky sat there thinking about it for a minute. For some reason he was getting hard just from thinking about getting a blowjob from another guy. He decided to take him up on his offer.

Ricky20034: Ok. Where do you live?

Coby waited for a few minutes for Josh to pick him up from work. He never came. Coby had to walk home five miles in the dark on the bad side of town.

Josh had done this several times before to Coby. He would get mad and not pick him up from work. Josh didn't work he wanted to stay home and take care of the house. He did do good in that department. The apartment was always clean, dinner cooked when Josh was in a good mood.

When Coby walked up to the front door, he was thinking of what Edith had said to him. He needed to get away from Josh, but he had made it so hard. He had taken Coby's check since the first six months they were together and blew it they moved often because they would get evicted because Josh wouldn't pay the rent and Coby couldn't have his own money.

He started thinking that if he got a job where he made more he could afford his own place and get his own car. He had remembered Randal Moore asking him if he would come work at the soda company that he was the manager of. Working there would help him save up and get a car of his own.

They had one car and it was in Josh's name. He had decided that they only needed one so he told Coby to sell his. When Coby said no Josh beat him until he agreed to say that he would sell his car he had since high school.

Coby stuck the key in the door, opened it and went inside the living room. Josh was sitting on the couch waiting for him, he stood up walked over to the door and slammed it shut. He then turned around and backhanded Coby across his face.

The spot immediately started to turn red on Coby's fair skin.

"You are a stupid bitch aren't ya!" Josh shouted. "That bitch Edith shouldn't have done that."

Josh grabbed Coby's shirt and slammed him into the wall. He hit the wall so hard that he went right through it. Josh then proceeded to kick him in the side. After a few repetitions of doing that he punched Coby in his face.

Coby put his arms in front of his face to defend himself.

"Get away from him." He kept hearing Edith's voice go through his head.

He closed his eyes and with all his strength kneed Josh in his stomach. He rolled over off Coby. He raised up from the floor and looked at Josh. He kicked Josh in the stomach with his foot.

"How does that feel!" He shouted. "Never again will I let you lay a hand on me. I am done find yourself another bitch! Get out now!"

"You get out and don't come back!" Josh shouted.

Coby didn't feel like arguing with Josh so he opened the door and took off back towards Pick and Pack #5 where he worked at. He was hoping Edith was still there. He didn't realize that it was after eleven and she had left already.

As soon as he got there he raced to the back to the employee bathroom. He looked into the mirror to see how bad he was this time. His face was welting over where Josh had slapped him, him. There was dried up blood on his nose and mouth. He just stood there looking at himself in the mirror glad that he had gotten out of there. He wasn't going there no matter what. He would get someone to take him to Van Buren tomorrow so he could fill out an application at the soda company.

He cleaned his face and got all of the dried up blood off of it. When he stepped out of the bathroom he grabbed a bunch of towels from out of the mop sink. He couldn't go home and he had no money to stay anywhere else.

He poked his head out the door to see where the overnight cashiers were. He didn't see them so he darted into the cooler which took him into the stockroom. He spread the towels out on top of a couple of pallets of beer and folded some up to make him a pillow. He laid his head down and fell fast asleep.

I can't believe I just did that. Ricky thought to himself.

He had just dropped Jason off at his house after coming over and giving him the best blow job just like he had promised. Now Ricky felt guilty about doing it. He was confused about it all.

He knew there was one person he could talk to about it all and that was his friend Sara Starkey, whom he had met at work. He had told her about him and Mark fooling around and that he thought he might be bisexual even though he had never so much as kissed a girl.

He laid down when he got home and fell asleep, his thoughts still racing.

Coby woke up to someone shaking him. He rolled over, forgetting that he had slept on a pallet of beer almost falling off of it. He looked up and saw Danita Noel his store manager looking at him.

"Did you sleep here last night?" She asked him.

He just looked at her not knowing what to say. He was afraid that she may be mad at him for sleeping at the store.

"Um yeah. Please don't be mad at me."

"Why did you sleep here?" She asked. "Are you okay?"

He shook his head.

"I had to get away. I had no place else to go."

"You finally left Josh?" She asked.

"Yes, and it's for good this time. I won't ever go back with him Danita."

"Well you deserve better than that ass anyhow. He never treated you good." She reached into her back pocket and pulled out her wallet. She took out five twenty dollar bills and then put her wallet back in her pocket. She handed the money to Coby. "Here, take this get you one of them pay by the week places until you get on your feet. This should hold you over until you get paid again."

"I can't take that." He told her.

She smiled at him. "I am not asking you to take it. I am telling you to take it."

She grabbed his hand, placed the money in it and closed his fingers to secure it.

"Thank you so much."

He got up and went to use the store phone to call his mom, seeing how he had no cell phone or any other way to call her. He explained to her that he needed her to take him to Van Buren so he could apply for a job he had been told about at Silverdollar Distributing. She told him that she was off work because the plant she worked at was closed for the day and she would be more than happy to. He told her to come and pick him up from the store and he would explain to her why when she got there.

On the way to Silverdollar Distributing, he explained how Josh had beaten him last night and he was done once and for all and not going back. His mom told him that if he needed to stay with her and his stepdad Matt that he could until he got on his feet.

He declined the offer and said that he already had a place to stay.

It took him a few minutes to fill out the application. When he handed it in, Terrance Porter the owner, just happened to be there and hired him on the spot. He would start tomorrow morning at 7am and work until 3:30. He didn't have to be at Pick and Pack until four so he could work at both places.

He explained to his mom that there was one more stop that he had to make and it was to a place called Choice Plus to see about getting a car with no money down since they knew him there. She even offered that if they needed money down that she would lend it to him.

The manager remembered him and knew that he was the one that paid off the car that Josh had and graciously let him get a car without any money down. He didn't like Josh and was glad that Coby had gotten away from him.

The only car that he saw that was within his price range was a teal 1997 Nissan Altima. He explained to them that this is what he wanted and they had the paperwork ready to be signed within minutes.

He once again had his own car and waved his mom to go ahead and go. He had one last stop to make. He knew of a cheap motel that was exactly one hundred dollars a week. It was called the Garden lodge. It wasn't the nicest of places, but it would do until he could get something better.

Things were looking up for Coby. He finally had gotten away from Josh once and for all, he had a new job, a place to stay, and a car of his own. He went to bed that night with a smile on his face. It was the first one that he had in awhile.

Ricky rolled over and beat his alarm clock until the atrocious sounding thing went off. It was 4:15 in the morning he had to be at work in forty-five minutes. He was tired because a buddy of his from work had come over and they stayed up until after midnight watching season one of Dave Chappell Show.

He went about his morning routine that he had gotten into ever since he started working at five in the morning. He turned on the computer and clicked on a folder that was filled with videos he clicked on one titled my best friend's hot mom. He watched a little bit of the video, it did nothing for him. He used to at least get hard from watching straight porn but it was getting harder and harder these days to do that.

He closed the video out and clicked on another on titled Marten Fucks Colby. It began to play as soon as the two guys started kissing, Ricky could feel his dick getting harder. He pulled off his underwear and shirt and threw them on his living room floor. He grabbed his dick and started to stroke it until he got off.

He went to the bathroom cleaned up and headed off to the wonderful world of working in the Wal-Mart deli.

The first thing he had to do when he got there was stock the meat and cheese behind the deli counter. When he finished he went and checked the dates to pull the bad ones. Once that was done he headed down to the meat department to get the deli freight. He worked on stocking the deli until a little after seven when he decided to take his break. He pushed the cart he was working off of into the cooler so nothing would go bad while he took his first break for the day.

When he was walking out of the deli into the back stock room he caught glimpse of Neicy who worked for the Silverdollar Distributing Company which handled seven up and a bunch of other sodas. It wasn't her that caught his attention it was the guy she was with. Coby as we have come to know him.

He was wearing a pair of beige khaki shorts and a lime green t-shirt that said Silverdollar Distributing across the front of it.

Ricky and Colby walked right past each other each secretly checking each other out. Ricky had butterflies in his stomach from walking past Colby.

"Wow. There is something about that guy. I have to talk to him sometime." Ricky thought.

Throughout the next two weeks Colby and Ricky would stare at each other every chance they got. The storage for the soda was right outside the deli, and Ricky would go out there and scan out damages just so he could watch Colby as he bent over.

Nothing came out of it until a Saturday at the end of the two weeks. Ricky came to work, he was working 8-4:30 that day. It was one of the days that Brandon, the regular deli stocker, was working.

As soon as Ricky walked through the door Brandon smiled at him.

"I know someone that likes you." Brandon teased him.

"Really?" Ricky asked.

"Yup found out this morning."

"Who?" Ricky asked.

"Well you know them."

"Really."

"Yeah sorta." Brandon paused. "Well, you know the Snapple guy he asked me if you were gay. He also said you were hot."

"What did you tell him?"

"I said I didn't know, but I would relay the message to ya."

"Oh."

Ricky's thoughts begin racing a million miles an hour. He was beating himself up for ever looking at Coby in the hallway like he did. He couldn't help it there was just something about the guy that just intrigued him. He knew that it was the way that he always looked at Coby when he passed him in the hallway. He was flattered that Coby liked him but scared at the same time.

When Ricky went home after work, the first thing he did was log into MySpace. He was going to find the guy who liked him. He didn't even know what his name was. He browsed through all of the gay profiles in that area, but there was still no sign of anyone that looked like him.

Ricky wanted to talk to Coby; he just didn't want to do it at work. He didn't know what people would think of it. He wanted Coby to at least be his friend and if it leads to something else then he would give in he was at a point where he was tired of hiding from who he was.

Coby lay in his bed thinking. He was sick of living at the Garden Lodge, it had mice and roaches and he couldn't do it any longer.

He picked up the phone next to his bed and dialed his mom's cell phone.

"Hello." Kandice answered.

"Mom, its Coby."

"How are you?"

"Good." He replied. "So is it still okay if I come and stay with you until I get back on my feet."

"Yes, it is. You will have the house to yourself the first two weeks of August. Matt and I are going to Florida for vacation. The only thing that I ask is that Josh is not allowed over here under no circumstances."

"I don't want to have anything to do with Josh ever again." Coby told her.

"That's good." She said. "So when are you coming?"

"Would tonight be okay?"

"Yes. Matt and I will both probably be sleep we have to get up at four to get ready for work. I will leave a garage door opener under the front door mat for you to use to get in with."

"Thank you so much. I will see you sometime tomorrow I didn't have to work tonight or tomorrow night."

"Ok. I love you Coby." Kandice said.

"I love you too mom." Coby told her. "Thanks for everything."

They both hung up the phone and ended their conversation.

Ricky stood behind the deli counter, not a customer in sight. It was slowing down because it was a Wednesday night and after seven so lots of people were at church for the night. Ricky and his friend Sara were waiting for Amber to get back so that Sara could go take her short lunch. Ricky was going home at eight and it was just the three of them that night.

The door between the deli and the kitchen came flying open and ecstatic Amber came in from her lunch.

"I just saw my first boyfriend from the first grade." She looked at me. "Doesn't help now that he is gay and likes you."

"Say what!" Ricky exclaimed.

"Calm down there hun." Sara told him. "I am going to lunch I will see yall in thirty."

She turned and walked out the door.

"The Snapple Boy, his name is Coby Shafer we went to school together."

"And where did you go to school at again?" Ricky asked.

"Poteau." Amber replied. "I had two friends named Coby one was straight and this Coby is gay he is really sweet though."

"Do you know his phone number?" Ricky asked coyly.

"I don't sorry."

Ricky said that name over and over in his head Coby Shafer. He had a plan to go about finding him.

Coby's mom and stepdad were already home when he made it home from work.

"I need you to go shopping with me, gotta run to Wal-Mart to get a few things and I need your help," Kandice told him when he walked through the door.

"Ok." Coby replied. "Let me use the bathroom and I will meet you outside at your car."

Coby used the bathroom and met his mom at her car, which she had already backed out of the garage to make it easier for him to get into.

He loved his mom's car. She had just gotten it early brand new with zero miles. It was a 2006 Nissan Maxima SE fully loaded. His mom loved Maximas, which is the only type of car she had driven for the past twenty years.

"So which Wal-Mart are we going to?"

"The one on Zero Street is closer than the other one so I figured we would just go to that one."

"Oh." Coby said as he buckled his seatbelt.

Kandice backed out of their driveway.

"Any reason why you want to go to that one there?"

"Just someone I saw there." Coby turned and looked out the window. "There is this guy that works in the deli that I think is really hot. He has probably gone home anyhow he works days usually."

"Oh so you know when he works?" Kandice grinned at Coby.

"Um I guess."

"Well I have to get a few groceries and I want to add a phone to my plan as long as you pay the bill. There is no need for Matt to know about it."

"Thanks mom."

When they got to Wal-Mart, Coby headed to the connection center to look at phones and his mom went to get the few groceries that she needed. When she was done she met Coby at the cell phones.

"You see any you like?" She asked. "I would like a new phone personally but am not due for an upgrade for awhile."

"Well, I can get the phone you like and take the sim card from it and put it in yours and use your old one and you use the new one."

"You'd do that for your momma?" Kandice asked.

"You have done so much for me since I left Josh I only owe it to you.

Kandice decided on a pink Motorola razor leaving Coby with her old purple Samsung.

The first thing Ricky did when he got home was log into MySpace and search people that graduated from Poteau High School in 2004 which is the year that he found out that Amber graduated. He also went to people.yahoo.com and typed in his name. He wanted to know everything he could about Coby. Just from typing in his name and hitting search he found only one match from that area Coby Wayne Shafer age 21.

He pulled up the MySpace screen again and started messaging people that went to school with Coby. He cut and pasted this message:

Hey, I was wondering if you remember going to school with Coby Shafer and if you do, do you know how I can get in touch with him. He is a vendor at the Wal-Mart I work at and I was wanting to talk to him.

Ricky

Ricky went down the road to Sonic and got something to eat. When he got home, he

checked his messages and saw he had three new ones all from people that Cody went to school

with. They all said that they remembered him but didn't have a number for him.

He gave up his search for the night and left his door open so he could see out the window.

He was hoping that somehow Coby found where he lived at and would come over to see him.

As Coby lay in his bed trying to go to sleep that night, all he could think of was Ricky. He liked everything about him. He just couldn't get up enough courage to talk to Ricky. He felt like Ricky was giving him mixed signals. He would stand at the end of the deli acting like he was stocking pizzas, but he would be staring down the soda the whole time looking at him.

They had never spoken a word to each other.

Just thinking about Ricky was making Coby's dick hard. He reached in his night table drawer a pulled out a bottle of lotion. He squirted some in his hand and took care of business all the while picturing Ricky naked and kissing him.

July 3rd, 2006

"Are you ever gonna talk to that Snapple Boy?" Marilyn Williams, the assistant department manager asked. "I know you like him."

"I think when I go to lunch, if I see him, then I am gonna tell him that I'm not gay."

"If you are gay don't be ashamed. Cathy that used to work here called the other day and you answered the phone and she said the little gay boy answered the phone. I am like what little gay boy. She says the little gay black boy that works back there. She has gaydar ya know."

"Sure she does." Ricky said sarcastically. He looked up at the clock it was time for him to go to lunch. "Well I am gonna go to lunch now see you in thirty minutes."

Ricky went and clocked out to go to lunch. After he clocked out, instead of him walking down the way he normally does he made sure he walked down the grocery aisle so he could see if Coby was down it. He knew that he was there because he had seen him a few minutes earlier.

He glanced down the soda aisle and saw Coby working. He was lifting two liters above his head onto the shelf with each lift his shirt came up, exposing his abdomen which Ricky really liked looking at.

He stood there watching Coby work for a few seconds. Finally Coby turned around and saw him.

"Well there is no turning back now." Ricky said to himself. "He has seen me now."

Ricky took a deep breath and walked down the aisle towards Coby. He stopped what he was doing and looked at Ricky.

"You're Amber's friend. Right?" Ricky asked.

"Yeah," Coby replied timidly.

"Well, I am not gay or anything." Coby's smile turned into sort of a frown. "But I wana be you friend can I get your number and maybe call you later?"

Coby's frown turned back into a smile.

"At least he wants to be my friend." Coby thought. "I still think he is gay though."

Coby reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. He went through his settings until he pulled up his number. He still wasn't completely sure of it since he just got the phone.

"Its 479-555-2547." Colby told him.

Ricky dialed the number and hit send. "I called you so you have my number now. I hate to run, but I have to go home and eat. I will call you though and you can come over sometime."

"Ok. Bye." Coby said.

Ricky raced to the parking lot and got in his car which was a maroon 1996 Buick Skylark. He was stuck with a car payment because some stupid lady pulled out from the grocery store, hit him and totaled out his car. He got enough out of his so he only owed eight hundred dollars on it. He couldn't wait until he got it paid for and it was all his.

When he got home he went into the kitchen and made a friend bologna sandwich. He kept looking at his phone wanting to call Coby, but he had just talked to him a few minutes ago and didn't want him thinking he was weird.

He finished his sandwich and headed out the door. Deciding along the way that he would call Coby when he gets off work.
