Part 8

Destruction

"I love her. Head over heels, totally insanely, weak in the knees, love her. Bobby, it's the kind we used to dream of growing up. Remember?" Emily said kneeling before him, taking his hands in hers. "We used to stay up all night talking about it."

"Not her. Not that... That fucking tramp. Not her Emily." He begged. "She's a slut Emily. Two weeks. Two weeks she used Jackson. Then she dropped him like a bad habit. She will do it to you too."

Emily shook her head. "She's changed, Bobby. Please, just give her a chance."

"NO! I won't stand here and watch her do that to you. And she will. Just wait!" Bobby said standing up with such force he knocked his chair over.

"Bobby, please. You have to believe me. She's not like that anymore. Hate me. I am the reason. I am the reason she was like that." Emily said grabbing onto his hand as he turned to leave, looking up at him from where she still sat on her knees, pleading.

"Let go of me." He said yanking his hand away from her. "Don't come crying to me when she fucks you over, sis." He said looking down at her in disgust. He hesitated at the door. "It's her or me Emily." He said. "Have fun with the dyke."

"Bobby!" Emily yelled out as the house shook with the slamming of the door. "DAMN IT!"

"So now it's your turn to want to run away." Alexis said later that night after they had put the kids to bed. Emily hadn't spoken to her all evening. It was beginning to get to her. "You don't even want to hear my side?" Alexis asked, sitting across the living room from her, her school work laid out in front of her.

"I don't need to hear your side." Emily said dryly, never looking up from her books.

"Oh, she can speak!" Alexis said loudly, slamming her book shut. "So if you're not even going to hear me out, then what the hell am I even doing here?"

"Don't raise your voice, Lex, the kids are sleeping." Emily said quietly as she looked over at her.

Alexis began to gather up her books. "How could she be like that?" She thought to herself. "I never pictured her as being so heartless." Alexis could feel the sting of tears behind her eyes.

"Alexis stop."

"Why it's very apparent you don't want me here!" Alexis said quietly but the edge cut through her voice.

"Alexis stop!" Emily said again, her voice more demanding. Alexis stopped and looked at her.

"You don't need to explain anything. I didn't mean to hurt you. I know how Jackson was. I knew what a player he could be. My brother was too in love too in love to see it. I know that you weren't the first; just the first Bobby was able to blame. I know you have been faithful to me... but I know your past, Alexis, and right now I am a little bit scared. My brother couldn't see it and..."

"You want to know if you will be that blind with love." Alexis asked quietly, anger filling her.

"Yes. I know that that's not fair. But yes." Emily said looking into Alexis's eyes.

"Your right, it's not fair. Jackson was one of MANY stupid mistakes. A year and a half. A year and a half full of stupid, stupid mistakes. A year and a half I ran from my feelings for you." Alexis said angrily. And what made her madder than anything was she couldn't decide who she mad at. Bobby for causing this fight, Emily for being like she was, or herself for that year and a half.

"I told him. I told him everything." Emily said quietly, looking up at Alexis who still sat on the floor across the room from her. "I told him I am in love with you."

"You could have lied." Alexis said, holding her gaze, feeling her feelings of anger slowly slip away.

"That's not something I will lie about. I love you, Alexis. I know I may lose a lot of people I care for- at least for a while. I will not deny what I am anymore. I will not deny that I am in love. Not for one minute- not even to my children. If they were to ever come up and ask me I would tell them `Yes, I love Alexis in everyway possible.' And I would mean it with all of my heart."

"I will never cheat on you Emily. You are the only person that I need." Alexis promised before setting her books down again. "I love you too." She added with a smile.

"I don't want to go, Alexis." Emily sighed a few days later. This week had been too much. In the matter of a few days, Emily had confirmed that she was indeed pregnant; told her brother, who she soon found out HATED her new girlfriend with a passion; and dropped the bomb on Mark when her had come by the pick up the kids for a long weekend.

"Let me know. I will pay for to get it taken care of." His words still rang in her ears. She was glad that Alexis was working when he had said it. She would have boxed his ears in had she heard him. Even hearing the retelling she looked as if she could spit fire.

"You will have to face your brother sooner or later, Emily. He is your brother. And you know that I am just a phone call away. I will drop you off so I will know how to get there if you need me." Alexis said, going over the plan for the hundredth time. She took Emily's hand in her own as she sat down beside her on the bed.

"I know you are right. I know Bobby wouldn't say or do anything. He's not like that. But I still don't want to go. Can't I just fall back into bed with you? That sounds so much nicer."

"I have to work and you know it. Even if it does sound nice." Alexis smiled. "Come on, get up lazy butt!" Alexis said as she stood, pulling on Emily's arm.

"Do I have to?" Emily whined, leaning back onto the bed.

"Now!" Alexis said sternly.

"Yes mother!" Emily moped as she stood and got ready.

"I will pick you up at 9:30 unless you need me... which," Alexis smiled reassuringly as they parked outside Emily's childhood home, "I am sure you won't. It'll be fine."

"I wish I had your optimism. Wish me luck." Emily said leaning into her beautiful girlfriend.

"Not that you need it but good luck." Alexis said with a loving smile as she gave Emily a quick kiss.

"9:30 and not a minute later." Emily said opening her door and getting out of the car.

"Yes dear. Love you too dear. See you then dear." Alexis joked as she leaned over the seat to smile at her. "9:30 sharp." She said more seriously as she watched Emily take a deep breath and shut the door.

Emily swallowed the butterflies in her stomach and her need to vomit as she walked up to the red front door. She knew that Bobby wouldn't have said anything, but she still worried.

"Mom? Dad?" She called in as she stood in the foyer and kicked off her shoes. Ever since a man that her mother had hired to clean her carpets had told her that almost ninety percent of grime on carpets are from shoes and foot traffic, shoes where banned from the house.

"Kitchen, Emily." Her mom's voice carried through the house to her. Emily took a deep breath, set her shoulders back and headed towards the sounds of her family.

"Bobby's running late, he had something to take care of. Sarah and Collin are in the den. Dad's out in his workshop like he always is lately." Emily's mother said hugging her daughter.

"Do you need any help, mom?" Emily asked knowing the answer. Sunday dinners were a tradition in this family and as tradition goes, no one was allowed to touch anything but the dishes.

"No, but you could keep me company." Barbra said turning back to her salad. "Let me look at you." She said as she did just that.

"Baby, what happened to that glow? Is everything okay?" Her mother asked looking at her. Her mother was always able to read her. It used to drive her insane, but after this many years, it was almost comforting.

"I'm fine mom." Emily heard herself lie.

"Really?" she said tearing the salad leafs by hand. She was taught that was the only way to cut salad. "Stainless steel will turn a leaf brown." She told us as she taught us to cook. "Because looking at you I would say you haven't slept for days."

"I haven't." Emily muttered, looking away from her mother.

"I heard that." Barbra had the keenest ears of anyone that Emily had ever met. It had left a young, hot-headed, quick-tempered Emily the receiving end of many hand prints across the face.

Emily shrugged her shoulders in defeat. "It's nothing mom." Emily felt the twinge of pain in her heart. She hated not coming out and telling her mother everything. They always talked about everything.

"Right. I'll believe that. So..." Her mom stared at her as she tossed the salad together. She could tell that her mother was debating on whether or not to push the issue and Emily felt herself breathe a sigh of relief when her mom nodded and let the issue go.

"So how was lunch with your brother?" She asked smiling over at her. Out of the frying pan and into the fire, as they say. Emily felt the blood drain from her face. She cringed at the mention of his name, and so did her stomach.

"Emily? Are you alright?" Her mom's figured loomed blurrily in front of her and she felt herself sway.

"Excuse me." Emily gasped as she quickly walked out of the kitchen. Her fast walk became a jog as she ran from the bathroom, losing everything she had eaten in the last twenty-four hours.

KNOCK KNOCK

"Baby, are you okay?" Her mom asked her through the closed door a few minutes later.

Emily pulled herself off of the cold tile floor and held onto the sink for support. "Yeah, mom, I'm... I'm fine. I'll be out in a minute."

Emily looked at her reflection in the mirror. Horrible.

"You know what they say about people who say they are fine?" Her mother's voice came back to her from ten years before. "No, what mother?" She heard her young teenage voice answer back with a little too much attitude. "The one's who say they are fine are usually the one who are farthest from it."

The saying fit now as much as it did ten years earlier. She knew she was anything but fine. Dread over seeing her brother filled her. How could she look at him when she couldn't even hear his name without being ill?

"Take your time sweetie. Just... just meet us at the table. Supper will be ready in about five minutes."

"Supper?" She repeated to her self as her stomach lurched at the thought. She doubted she would be able to keep down water much less food. Emily quickly tried to pull herself together before she walked into the living room. She looked over at her sister and brother-in-law, the picture of wedded bliss. They chatted for a bit before they heard their mother calling them in to eat.

"Hey, Daddy." Emily said walking up to her father as they entered the dining room.

"Munchkin!" Being the shortest in the family lead to nicknames like that. Her dad stood 6'4" and even at the wonderful age of fifty-four he was a solid mass of muscle. His arms automatically went around her, wrapping her in a bear hug. She felt safe, felt as if everything would be okay, with that one quick hug.

"How are you this week?" He asked as her let her go.

"Been better, dad." She admitted, sliding into her seat.

"Too bad to hear. You look a little pale tonight. You feeling okay, little bit?" Nickname number two.

"Yeah, I'll be fine. Just a little under the weather, I guess." She saw her mom raise her eye brows at her. She hated lying.

The food and the company were blessed with a prayer and soon the food and the conversation began to flow. Emily felt herself relaxing and enjoying herself. She was laughing and joining in the conversation and she was surprised to find how hungry she was. "After two kids, you think that I would be used to this." She thought to herself. She cringed when she finally heard the front door shut half an hour later. She knew he was here and that he was still upset with her. Emily could feel his eyes burning into her back as he walked into the dinning room.

"I didn't see your car. I thought you were smart and decided not to come to family dinner." Bobby's voice dripped with hatred as he sat and began to fill his plate.

"Well, why wouldn't she show up?" her father asked cheerfully, oblivious of the daggers that Bobby sent across the table at his sister. "This is family dinner and she is family."

"She's no family of mine!" Everyone stopped moving. No more food being passed, Collin with his fork halfway to his mouth.

"Bobby. How could you say something like that?" Her mother asked, looking over at him. They all waited on baited breath for him to answer, most of all Emily.

"Bobby. Please, not here. Not now." Emily felt the bile rising in the back of her throat, Bobby's eyes locking with hers.

"What's going on?" Her dad demanded quietly. Bobby never moved his eyes from hers as he turned her head towards his father.

"I take it the filthy little dyke didn't tell you then?"

"Bobby." Emily pleaded.

"Robert Thompson!" Barbra shrieked simultaneously.

"Don't. Bobby. Please, don't." Emily's voice sounded hollow in her own ears, a single tear rolled down her cheek.

"Emily, sweetie, are you okay? What's going on?" Her sister asked taking her hand. Emily turned to her, unshed tears filling her eyes, silently pleading with her; hoping Sarah's voice would still be full of love and concern when all was said and done.

"The little bitch is pregnant and now living with her lesbian lover." Bobby said triumphantly, taking a bite of his sautéed green beans.

"Emily, what is he talking about?" Sarah asked, her soothing voice wrapping itself around Emily.

"Emily, what's going on? Is what Bobby is saying true?" Her dad's voice asked firmly, no longer full of the love and the humor that it had held just minutes before; now stern and cold.

Emily searched her sister's eyes as Sarah nodded her on. "Is what true, daddy?" Emily asked turning to him. "That I am pregnant or that I am a lesbian?"

"Both. Either. Take your choice."

"Dyke." She heard her brother mutter, smiling over at her as he ate.

"You are the biggest fucking piece of shit! You know that?"

"Emily! Language!" Her father snapped.

"And to think, she took up for you! She excused your behavior! Even admitted she messed up, told me to stick by you 'cause you are FAMILY!" Emily fumed at her brother.

"Emily, who is she? Who is this girl that you are talking about?" Her mother asked quietly.

"Her lesbian bitch!"

"Fuck you, Bobby!"

"I WILL NOT TOLERATE THIS LANGUAGE IN MY HOUSE!" Her dad bellowed, slamming his fist against the table. Such an outburst from their father was unheard of and it shook Emily to the core. "I want answers from both of you and I want them NOW!"

Emily stood up, yanking her hand from her sister. "Truth? Mark left me, but before he did, your precious Mark knocked me up. You want to know what your wonderful son-in-law told me I should do when he found out? He told me he would `help take care of it' and not in the good way. He seriously thought I would have an abortion."

She heard her mother and sister gasp. It was enough to push her on. "Truth?!? I am head over heels in love with someone who loves me just as much... who just happens to be a female too. Truth... truth?!?" Emily yelled at her father, her face getting red. "Truth? The truth is..." Emily felt her stomach revolt against her. "I'm going to be sick." Emily covered her mouth with her hand as she ran from the room. She felt the tears rolling down her face.

"I can't believe you, Bobby. You of all people..." Sarah said as she stood and chased after her sister.

"Emily?"

"Go away, Sarah."

"I'm coming in." Sarah said pushing the door open. "Are you okay?"

"Morning sickness." Emily laughed at the evil, cruel joke, as she hovered over the toilet, tears still rolling down her face.

"Bobby shouldn't have done that. You would have told us when you were ready. I know you would have. Can I do anything for you?" Sarah asked sitting on the edge of the tub, rubbing her sister's back.

Emily nodded and in between heaves handed her sister her phone.

"Alexis. Tell. Her. Come. Tell. Her. Bobby." Emily said.

Sarah nodded her understanding and searched her phone for Alexis's name. Nervously, Sarah punched the call button.

"What's wrong?" Alexis asked as soon as she answered. It had only been an hour since she had dropped Emily off. Too soon for her to be calling unless something was wrong.

"Alexis. This is Emily's sister." Alexis felt her heart jump in her throat as she pulled off her apron and hopped the counter of the coffee bar, already heading for the door.

"What the hell, Lex?" Sarah heard someone say in the back ground.

"What's happened? Is Emily okay?"

Sarah looked down at her sister and sighed. She gave Alexis the short version of the last twenty minutes. She could hear Alexis start her car and knew without asking that she was on her way as she told her the story.

"Em, you okay for a second?" She asked her sister. "I am going to go let her in." Emily nodded weakly. It seemed like forever until her sister returned with Alexis by her side.

"God, Emily." Alexis said as she dropped to her knees "I never would have made you came. I shouldn't have made you come. I am so, so sorry." Alexis said pulling Emily to her.

"Not your fault." Was all Emily could find the energy to say. Emily wrapped her arms around Alexis and cried into her shoulder. She allowed her body to be pulled onto Alexis' lap, felt her self being rocked gently.

"I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry, baby. I didn't think he would pull something like that. I am so, so sorry." Alexis repeated running her hands through Emily's short blonde hair.

"She's right, Alexis. It's not your fault. This was our brother's doing." Sarah said leaning on the wall across from them. She could feel the love her sister and this woman shared.

Alexis looked up at her grateful. "Thanks you, but you don't know the whole story. This IS my fault."

"Lexie, you may have hurt Bobby, but you didn't make him the hateful person that sat there tonight. You didn't make him say those things." Emily said into her shoulder, clinging onto her for dear life.

Alexis looked between Emily and Sarah. She had only gotten the short version of what happened on the way here. "What did he say?" Alexis asked. Emily shook her head.

"What did he say, baby girl?" Alexis asked, leaning Emily back, holding Emily's chin in her hand. Emily just looked at her, tears welling up in her eyes again.

"He called her a dyke bitch. He had quiet a few choice words for you too."

"Sarah!" Emily sighed. Alexis dropped her hand in shock, pulling Emily to her tightly.

Alex sat there trying to process all of it. Here she sat, in a stranger's bathroom, holding her beautiful, pregnant girlfriend, who was crying, all because of him. The more she thought about it, the madder she became.

"Move Emily." She said with quiet anger, trying to push Emily from her lap.

"No. No Alex. Please, he is not worth it." Emily said into her shoulder.

"No, but you are. Sarah, watch your sister." Alexis said pulling Emily's arms from around her neck. It wasn't a request.

"Just watch your language." Sarah warned, assuming her spot next to her sister on the tile floor.

Alexis rounded the corner. She had seen them all still sitting around the table when she had barreled through the house to check on Emily minutes before.

"Who do you think you are, Bobby? She's your sister. Be mad at me. Hate me! You had no right!" Alexis said loudly from the doorway.

"Young lady. This is not the time or the place." Mr. Thompson said, still sitting at the head of the table.

"Fuck you cunt. And fuck her too."

"Robert Thompson. You will watch your language in my house." His dad warned him, knuckles turning white from gripping the sides of the table.

"Just because I screwed up a year ago. Bobby, if it wasn't me, it would have been someone else; some other girl; some other guy. I know he broke your heart..."

"You don't know anything. You shut your fucking mouth. You don't know anything about me tramp!"

"Call me what ever you want, but that's your sister. It was her place, not yours, to tell everyone what was going on. Mr. Thompson, Mrs. Thompson," she said turning to both of them, "this is not how she wanted this to happen. She WAS planning on telling you both everything tonight. I wish we could have met under better circumstances. This is not how I wanted us to meet and for that I am truly sorry. But I can't be sorry for loving your daughter. I do. I love her with all of my heart."

"Dear, do you have a name?" Barbra asked quietly.

"Alexis, ma'am. Alexis Frost." She said, her eyes pleading with Emily's mother silently. Pleading for understanding, for love, for anything other than hate.

"While I do appreciate your apology Ms. Frost, I would appreciate it even more if you would take my daughter and leave my house." Mr. Thompson said sternly.

Alexis stared at him in disbelief. "Eric Thompson." Barbra looked over at her husband.

Alexis jumped as Mr. Thompson slammed his fist against the table, rattling the dishes that still sat on it.

"No, it's bad enough to have one dirty homo in our family. But Bobby is not my baby girl. He is not married. He does not have children. He doesn't have a life he is turning his back on." He said to his wife. "I love her, but I don't have to agree with this. I don't have to pretend I like any of this or that I like you." He turned his angry stare at Alexis. "Take her and leave."

"I hope you are satisfied." Alexis said looking over at Bobby's stunned face.

"What's going on, Lexie?" Emily asked as Alexis swept into the bathroom.

"We've just been asked to leave the premises."

"What? I don't understand."

"We've been kicked out. Told to leave. We've gotten the boot."

"Sarah, we are leaving, too." Collin said joining the women in the already cramped bathroom.

"What... what did you say to them?" Emily asked still leaning against the tub.

"Sarah, please go tell your mother good bye. Emily, she didn't say anything out of line. We are taking the two of you home."

"We are?" Sarah asked looking at her husband.

"I think your sister is going to need you when everything is said and done." He said holding onto Sarah's shoulders. She nodded and kissed him quickly before going to search her mother out.

"Can you stand?" Collin asked turning to his dear sister-in-law. She looked so small and fragile, like the smallest thing would make her break. He saw the look of love and concern and complete worry that was etched across Alexis' face as she looked up at him.

"I'm so tired." Emily said looking up at him. Her eyes seemed to have sunk in, dark circles surrounding them. "I am so tired, Lexie."
