Chapter one: As You Were

Prologue

“Kill him!”

“Burn him!”

“WE WANT HIM DEAD!”

Michael Apotria looked around at the crowd of people that stood around watching as the boy he loved being strung up on a pole.

“Don’t even think about it,” Antonio Deiseo sat as he stepped up beside him.

Michael growled. “Stay away from and stay out of my head and thoughts.”

Antonio smiled. “I don’t have to read your mind. Your face says exactly what I am thinking and feeling. You want to save Jesse just as much as I do.”

“Or die trying,” Michael said as he watched the crowd.

Please help me,” Jesse said to them, telepathically. “I can sense you both out there. Please…don’t let them do this to me.”

“Michael,” Antonio warned him. “We can’t.”

“We have to,” Michael said, is heartbreaking watching them throw stones at Jesse. “If we don’t do something, they will kill him.”

“And if we do something, we expose ourselves and they kill us,” Antonio said, trying to reason with him.

Please,” Jesse called out to them.

Michael saw as one of the mob members lit a torch with a flame.

“You know as well as I do, that he will die no matter what we do,” Antonio stated. “They have already poisoned him. He is dying as we speak already…He needs an antidote and we don’t have access to that. He will die a slow painful death…And we will have no choice but to watch him die.”

“Burn the Witch!”

“KILL HIM!”

The Mayor of the town stepped on the platform where Jesse was strung up.

“Witch…You will die this day, that is true,” Mayor White said to Jesse. “What final words do you have to say to the people you have scorned?”

Jesse looked out into the crowd to look at Michael and Antonio.

You are not going to save me? After the times we both had? Both Good and Bad…You are going to let them kill me?” He asked them

Both Michael and Antonio looked away .

Jesse cleared his throat.

“You people have vengeance in your heart because I killed so many of your people,” Jesse spoke to the crowd. “I want you to know that what you are hoping to accomplish here will not happen…”

“Michael…”Antonio said sensing something horrible was about to come.

“But what I want you all to know is that, I took pleasure in every evil thing I did,” Jesse said. “Especially what I did to your son, Mayor. He fucked me so well…Better than the rest of these people’s sons and husbands and fathers…and grandfathers.”

Mayor White’s face flushed red.

A village’s picked up a large rock and chucked it right at Jesse.

Michael and Antonio both cringed as they expected to see the rock make a nasty impact with Jesse but it didn’t…

“The rock…” Michael said, alarmed.

“His Powers,” Antonio said, equally alarmed.

I will kill you both,” Jesse said with a sneer as he telepathically communicated with them.

The villagers backed away in alarm.

Jesse smiled as the rock hit the villager he threw it at the speed of at least 80 mph, straight in the face.

Boulders around Jesse begin to levitate and started firing at various villagers.

“He is going to kill them all,” Michael said in shock.

”Let’s go,” Antonio said pulling him as they both used their super speed to run away from the chaotic crowd.

“You can run, you can hide but I will find you both,” Jesse said as he unbound the ropes on his hand and feet.

Michael and Antonio both looked back to see a flame from the sky hit the ground where Jesse stood and swamped up the villagers.

“What did he just do?” Antonio asked as he watched the flame engulf the men.

“He just killed himself using Kara Hari…Only to be reborn again,” Michael said, fear creeping over him. “As something even more evil and powerful than we can imagine.”

Act ONE

“ALEX!”

I jumped, startled at the loud thud of my backpack hitting the table. Snapping out of my thoughts, I looked at my little brother, Max.

“What?” I asked him, annoyed at being startled.

“It’s time to go, dude,” He said grabbing my cold pop tart of my plate. “Mom has a big case so she can’t drop of us for our first day.”

I sighed loudly. “So that means we have to take bus, huh? Great. Just great.”

I got up and grabbed my bag and walked out the kitchen, heading towards the door.

“Alex,” mom called out from her office.

Sighing, I turned around and headed back to the doorway of her office.

“Yeah, mom?” I asked trying to smile and sound positive, knowing what was to come from this.

She grabbed me into a hug and rubbed my back.

“Mom…”

She kept hugging me.

“Mom…stop,” I said pulling away. “Please…Just stop.”

She covered her mouth and looked at me, unsure of what to say.

“I will be okay…I am okay,” I said with a smile. “I don’t need you to keep smothering me. Just…stop…please.”

I turned and left out the room, heading towards the front door when I realized I left my cellphone upstairs. Rushing up the steps to my room, I quickly grabbed the phone of my dresser and headed back out when I noticed Max was in his room.

“I thought we had to…” I said pushing the half-open door open to see him popping a pill. “What’s that?”

He casually stepped in front of the bottle, so I couldn’t see what it was.

“Painkillers for Headache,” he said to me with a smile.

He walked past me and I noticed he had swiped the blue bottle before I had a chance to see what it was.

“We should go,” he said, as he pushed past me and headed down the stairs.

“yeah,” I said, somehow sensing he was lying to me.

Scene B

“Alex!” A Familiar voice called out to me as I stood at my locker, struggling with the combination.

I turned and saw an old childhood friend rushing up to me.

“Oh, wow…Dave? Dave Forbes?” I said in shock, looking at him.

“Yeah, dude, it’s me,” He said grabbing me into a tight hug.

“You went and got all Abercrombie model on me,” I said with a laugh. “Tan, Muscle, and spiky hair and everything.”

“Well, actually I am working at Hollister now but a compliment is a compliment,” Dave said, genuinely happy to see me. “No more, goofy, nerdy, gamer Dave here.”

I smiled. “Well, good for you dude. It’s really good to see a somewhat familiar face here in this mass ocean of strange faces.”

“Yeah, I bet…How long has it been? 3 years?” He asked me. “Your mom told me you were coming back a few weeks ago but I tried calling for you and you never returned a call or anything.”

“I know. I’m sorry.” I felt bad that I had blown him off. I just didn’t want to have to deal with people asking…

“How you holding up?” He asked me.

Asking questions like that. Before I answered the question, I was bombarded by a face that I was hoping not to run into but knew I would.

“So he returns,” Vinnie said to me with a look of surprise and resentment on his face.

“Hey, Vinnie,” I said, uncomfortably.

“I heard your Dad killed himself,” Vinnie said, rather bluntly. “That sucks.”

I cleared my throat uncomfortably. “Yeah, it does suck. But…what can I do?”

The three of us stood there awkwardly In silence looking at one another.

“Still gay?” He asked me, catching me off guard again.

“Yep,” I said, a bit put off at his bluntness.

“Shame,” He said before he left Dave and I standing there looking at one another in shock.

“Wow, he is still a dick to you three years later?” Dave asked me in shock as he watched Vinnie interact with his fellow football players.

“I mean, I guess I deserve it,” I said with a sigh. “We were best friends…I not only told him that I was gay, I kissed him, and he freaked. Can’t blame him.”

Dave patted my back sympathetically. “I know, but still. It’s been almost 3 years. It’s time to let it go.”

I sighed and shrugged. “No biggie. I have more important things to worry about then that.”

****************************************************************************** Act Two

Vinnie walked out of the school, needing to get his head straight after our encounter.

“Get it together, dude,” He said to himself as he looked up to see Max and a couple of team members from his football team.

He saw Max reach into his back pocket and pull out what looked to be some pills and hand it to one of the players.

“Oh, come on dude…Max, what the hell are you doing?” Vinnie asked himself as he watched the player give him some money and the two went their separate ways.

Vinnie walked over to Max who stood counting the cash.

“You know, if you are going to do a transaction, it would help not to do it in plain view where anyone can see you,” Vinnie said as he walked over to Max.

Max chuckled. “So you can talk and acknowledge me as long as the cool kids are not around to see you talking to the emo kid, huh Vince?”

Vinnie sighed. “What were you selling him dude?”

Max slid the money into his pocket and walked past Vinnie, which was a big mistake. Vinnie Capertina hated with a passion to be ignored.

“Aye,” Vinnie said grabbing Max’s arm and pulling him back. “Don’t walk off when I am talking to you. What did you sell him?”

“It’s none of your fucking business,” Max said pulling away and shoving Vinnie back.

“Oh, you want to pick a fight?” Vinnie asked with a laugh as he shoved Max hard, who fell onto the ground. He flipped Max onto his stomach and shoved his face in the ground.

“Let me go,” Max said as he struggled to get free.

“Dude, I am about 75 pounds heavier and a lot faster than you,” Vinnie said reaching into Max’s pocket. “Don’t ever try that again.”

He let Max up and examined the tube.

“Steroids bro?”

Max brushed himself off. “Give it back.”

Vinnie poured the pills out and stomped on them, leaving Max standing there in shock.

“Wha…What the fuck man?”

Vinnie throw the tube on the ground and stared at Max blankly. “You can fuck up your life doing whatever the hell it is you are doing. But I’ve worked hard for vice captain and I am working harder to get Captain next year. I swear if you do something like this again, I will rearrange your face.”

Vinnie tossed the tube back at Max and walked past him, leaving him looking at his destroyed stash on the ground.

Act Three

I walked out of the bathroom stall, heading to the sink to wash my hands when I noticed someone behind me.

I turned around, sensing trouble.

“Look what we have here,” He said with a smile.

I swallowed hard. I glanced at the door to see if I could make it, if need be.

“Vinnie,” I said nervously.

“You were not supposed to come back,” he said to me, anger dripping from his voice. “I thought I made it clear.”

I was really afraid. Vinnie reacted badly to the whole gay thing and it was obvious that he wasn’t ready to deal with it now…

“My dad died…”

“Your dad killed himself, no need to sugarcoat it, Alex,” he said with a sneer. “Your dad offed himself. He didn’t die…Dying is something that is unexpected. He killed himself.”

Vinnie felt bad what he was saying and doing but it was like he had no control over what he was saying.

“Please stop…”

Vinnie took a step closer to me.

“You kissed me…That was fucking disgusting,” Vinnie said angrily.

“I know and I am sorry,” I said, eying the door again.

I decided to make a move for it but he was too quick for me and grabbed my arm and slung me into the adjacent wall causing me to hit my head on the hard wall.

“My dad saw that kiss and beat the shit out of me,” Vinnie said pulling me up by my shirt. “It’s only fair I return the favor.”

I felt a sharp pain go into my stomach as he kneed me in the stomach and threw me across the floor.

“Vinnie…Please…” I said crawling away from him.

This wasn’t him…Vinnie was angry but I could feel something inside of him that was …foreign. This wasn’t him.

Please help me,” I thought to myself. “Please someone just help me.”

As if an answer to my prayer, the bathroom door flew open and a flash tackled Vinnie into the side of a stall.

Vinnie crumpled to the floor, unconscious.

“Oh my god,” I said covering my mouth. “Is he…”

“No,” The guy said looking at me, with a look of confusion and amazement. “He is just unconscious. But you should go.”

I looked at him and at Vinnie and back at the guy. He could not take his eyes off of me and it was as if I were drawn to him myself.

“Go,” He said with a little more force.

I walked towards the door and turned back around to see him watching me. It wasn’t creepy but more along the lines of observant…

“What is your name?” I asked him.

He looked at me confused but then he smiled. “Mike Apotria.”

I smiled back and walked out of the bathroom leaving Mike crouching in front of Vinnie, who was beginning to come to.

“What happened?” Vinnie asked, staring blankly at Mike. “Who are you?”

“A friend…I found you slumped here on the ground,” Mike said helping him up. “You okay man?”

Vinnie rubbed his head and looked around. “I…I guess. I just don’t remember what happened.”

Mike sighed and helped Vinnie to the door. He had his suspicions over what might have happened.

Act Four

“He attacked you in the bathroom?” Dave asked me as we sat at the lunch table together with a friend of ours, Kristin.

I sighed and rested my head on my shoulders. “Yeah, it scared the hell out of me. I mean, I know it has been almost 3 years but Vinnie is not the aggressive type like that.”

“Like you said, Alex, it has been 3 years almost,” Kristin said sympathetically. “You have changed…So he has changed.”

I nodded, not sure if I believed that or not.

“No homo, but that dude has been checking me out ever since we have been at lunch,” Dave said causing me to look up.

I locked eyes with Mike, who smiled and I smiled back.

“I don’t think he is looking at you, Davey boy,” Kristin said with a sly smile, her eyes motioning towards me.

Dave sighed and laughed. “I forgot how it was to be your friend. No matter how hot I might be now, you always steal the show and attention away from me, you sly dog.”

“Well, luckily for you, I am only into guys so you can have all my girl groupies,” I said with a smile. “He is the guy who actually saved me from Vinnie earlier.”

Kristin looked back and caused Mike to blush and looked down.

“He is cute,” She said with a thumbs up. “Go for it.”

I shook my head as the bell rung. “I am not going for anything…except a visit to see my dad.”

Kristin and Dave shared a glance that I did not miss.

“Guys, I am fine,” I said with a sad smile. “It’s just today is my…would have been my dad’s birthday and I wanted to go deliver some flowers since he was born at 1 p.m.”

Dave stood up and gave me a hug. “Do you need us to come with you?”

I shook my head and smiled. “I will be fine. Go ahead to class. Besides, my mom only wrote one of these get out of school early notes. So I don’t want anyone to get in trouble for skipping.”

I grabbed my bag, said my goodbyes, and rushed to my locker to get the flowers I had brought with me earlier that day.

I turned and starting running down the hall only to run into my little brother, causing some pills to rattle and hit the ground.

“Max…” I said as he scrambled around picking them up.

Max tried to hide the tube but I snatched it from his hand.

“What are these?” I asked him.

“You know, I am getting tired of everyone messing with stuff,” Max said snatching it back from me.

I looked at my brother, in shock. He seemed angry for no apparent reason.

“Are you popping pills?” I asked him, fearing the answer.

“Don’t be silly, Alex,” he said with a wry laugh. “They aren’t drugs…Just helps me out performance wise.”

“Steroids?” I asked in shock. “Yeah, that is so much better. Why are you taking this stuff?”

“Look, I am not like you…I am not smart or the poster kid for modeling or easy going where people just naturally want to be my friend…I have to work for all the popularity I want,” he said to me shoving me into a wall. “I need these if I plan to make the football team and if you want to get these from me, you are going to have to fight me for it.”

I looked at him, shocked. “I…I don’t want to fight you. Not like this. You’re not yourself.”

“Yeah, because you know me so well, right?” He asked with a sly grin. “Before your dad died, you barely texted or called me except on every other birthday and most holidays. Never wrote and Never wanted to visit.”

I stared at him…speechless as what to say.

“I gotta get to class,” He said with one last look. “I am already late as is.”

I watched my brother as he walked down the hallway and glanced down at my watch.

“Shit,” I said with a sigh as I realized I was going to miss the bus, if I didn’t hightail it out of here.

I rushed outside the parking lot and headed towards the bus stop to see the bus was finish loading all the people on board and was about to drive off.

“WAIT!” I called out waving my hand and flowers to signal the driver, to no avail.

The driver drove off leaving me helplessly stranded…The next bus wouldn’t arrive for another 20 minutes causing me to be late for something I precisely wanted to do at 1 p.m.

I sighed dejectedly and turned towards the school to see a familiar face.

“Mike..” I said caught off guard.

He smiled at me sheepishly. “Sorry to startle you. Is something wrong?”

“I…I…Just needed to get somewhere by a certain time and now…it’s all fucked up,” I said and then covered my mouth. “Crap, I just cussed. Sorry, I don’t really cuss that often. I am just really stressed and it slipped out and…”

“It’s okay,” Mike said with a laugh. “Why don’t I give you a ride?”

I looked at him with a half-suspicious glance. “I don’t know. I don’t usually accept rides from people I barely know.”

Mike chuckled. “Good logic to have but think of it this way. I would get you there a lot faster than that bus would. No stops to pick up other people…I could just break the sound barrier and get you there.”

“I don’t know,” I said still unsure. “It’s about 30 minutes away.”

“I don’t mind,” Mike said with a warm smile. “And I will get you there in 20 minutes or less…I promise.”

I sighed and smiled at him. “Thank you…For saving me…twice today.”

“No problem,” He said as he led me to where his car was.

I normally didn’t make a habit out of driving with people I don’t know but it just felt…right.

Mike reached in front of me to open the door for me.

Just like a gentleman,” I thought to myself.

Mike smiled to himself, realizing he could read my thoughts.

“SO…” he said climbing into the driver’s seat. “Where to?”

Act Five

Mike and I stood outside the gates of Liberty Cemetery.

“You okay?” He asked with a concerned look on his face.

I looked down at the flowers in my hands.

“My dad…died back in May and it’s now August and I am finally getting around to visiting,” I said, feeling guilty.

Mike gave me a gentle hug and I smiled but gasp for a second as images flew into my head.

I closed my eyes as I saw Images of Mike and myself lying in bed together…kissing…making love. Except, they didn’t appear to be images of us in modern times. The way we were dressed, we looked to be back in the 18th or 19th century.

I pulled away from Mike and looked at him, disoriented as my head swam. Clutching it.

“You okay?” He asked me, concerned. He reached out to touch me but I pulled away.

“Yeah, I just….need to get to my father,” I said with a small smile.

Casting a curious glance back at Mike, I made my way towards the area where my father was buried at.

I stood there for a moment…Not sure of what to say…What to do…

“H-Hi…Hi, dad,” I said placing the flowers by his tombstone. “I know you think flowers are girly but I doubt it be right for me to bring a bunch of playboy magazines and place em on your grave.”

I chuckled as I could just imagine him laughing at the joke. I rubbed my eye, as I realized a lone tear was trickling down my cheek.

“I’m Sorry that I haven’t been to visit you,” I said crouching down. “It’s just really hard for me to really acknowledge that you are gone…I miss you.”

It was then that I realized I was sobbing. I never was one to cry much or show much of anything except anger and happiness. Crying felt so weak to me but I just couldn’t help myself.

“Why did you do it?” I asked him. “Why did you leave me?”

My dad was my best friend. He understood my fears and worries about being gay. Desires to find someone to connect with. He accepted me and never once tried to change me.

“I know, I said on the day of your funeral that I hated you for leaving me,” I began as I wiped my eyes. “But I don’t…I don’t hate you. I am just sad that you are gone and left me…”

I sensed someone behind me….I turned to see nothing but tombstones.

“Mike?” I called out, eyes scanning the filed for anyone or anything that might be there. “Mike, is that you?”

I looked around but couldn’t see anything. I heard what sounded like breathing.

“Who’s there?” I called out.

Something wasn’t right here…I turned to walk towards the way I had came but I saw someone blocking the way. It sure wasn’t Mike.

He walked towards me and it was almost as if I could feel that he wanted to kill me. I could feel the desire to rip me from limb to limb.

I took off running through the cemetery, looking back to see he was moving at speeds faster then a normal human.

“Wha…” I tripped over a log and he lept over one of the tombstones and right on top of me.

He was eerily attractive. Tanned Skin, with black hair and…Fangs?”

I screamed aloud and kicked him with all my might and got up running, hoping there was another exit from the cemetery.

Within seconds of running, he had caught up with me and had a hold on my shirt and threw me 20 feet across the cemetery and crashed into the side of a mausoleum.

“Please…” I begged as I felt myself creeping into blackness as I was losing consciousness. “Please..don’t do this.”

My eyes slowly closed as I began to think of my father and the last thing I remembered was seeing Mike tackle the guy to the ground.

“Antonio, what the hell are you doing?” Mike asked, fangs blaring as he was prepping for a fight.

“I thought he was Jesse,” Antonio said with a smile, as they circled each other.

“He is not Jesse,” Mike said, keeping one eye on my unconscious body and the other on Antonio.

“Oh, trust me, I know,” Antonio said to him, with a sigh. “He didn’t even put up a fight. Shame…”

Antonio smiled and before Mike had a chance to react, Antonio rushed and grabbed me by my neck.

Mike made a move forward but Antonio blared his fangs causing Mike to stop in his track.

“I am Older…I am Faster…stronger,” He said with a smile. “Make one move and I will snap his neck before you even moved in an inch.”

Antonio tossed me back to the ground and walked towards Mike. “You have to wonder that if he is not the rebirth of Jesse then who the hell is he and why the hell does he look like him.”

Mike looked at me, his mind wondering the same thing. “I don’t know. But you can’t hurt him.”

“Who said anything about hurting him? He looks just my type to play with,” Antonio said with a laugh. “Although, you know the force we vampires have…I might kill him when I fuck him…By mistake of course.”

Mike made a move to attack Antonio, who in return grabbed him and slung him into the wall of the mausoleum, landing right beside me.

“A for Effort, F for execution,” Antonio said, with a condescending laugh.

Mike rushed over to me, checking for a pulse. He looked back up to see Antonio gone.

But he knew Antonio wasn’t gone for good.

“Mike?” I asked, coming to. “What happened?”

Mike sighed and looked down at me worriedly.

Antonio had a reason for being here and he knew it was up to him to prevent whatever he planned from happening.

So My first attempt at a Vampire/Werewolf story…How did I do?
