CHAPTER 7
What the hell is it with teachers? Connor couldn't help but think as Ms. Powell told them to get to work. That kid, whatever his name is, had helped Gavin but the way he did it was so... uh I don't even? Connor's thoughts were interrupted by the sound of coughing next to him.
"So, um where would you like to start?" Connor knew that voice. Looking up he sighed as he saw Gavin.
"If you rather I leave, that's fine." Gavin said as he stood to leave. Connor's hand shot out and grabbed Gavin's elbow.
"No, it wasn't about that. I just can't believe it's still only the first day of school and not even lunch yet," Connor said quickly.
Gavin sat back down. "I know what you mean; it feels like it has been a month!"
"Yeah, I know and that bully thing that happened earlier was crazy," Connor replied with a small frown.
"I know, but you stood up to him and that was really cool!" Gavin said as he grabbed Connor's shoulder.
"Those don't sound like interview questions." Ms. Powell shouted at Gavin and Connor. Gavin jumped with surprise so he hadn't noticed Connor flinch when Gavin had touched his shoulder.
"Well, how should we do this?" Connor asked.
"It might go faster if one of us asked questions!" Gavin said.
"I never would have thought of that," Connor said sarcastically.
"Well, I will ask you questions about yourself then you ask me. How does that sound?" Gavin asked.
"That sounds great," replied Connor.
"Okay, well, where are you from?"
"I'm from California, but my parents are both from London. That's why I have this accent." Connor answered. However, he couldn't help thinking, That's one of the reasons why people like to make fun of me.
"That's really cool Connor...I mean your accent is really cool...so um, what do you like to do for hobbies and sports?"
"Well, for hobbies I like to read and you have to promise not to laugh okay?" Connor shot at Gavin.
"I promise, no matter what, I won't laugh," Gavin said with conviction.
"I like to cook and I do photography." Connor held his breath and mentally kicked himself Why did I say that? I could have lied and said something cool...
"That is totally awesome! I wish I could cook, my mom says I could burn cereal." said Gavin.
"Hahaha, I don't mean to laugh but your mom sounds hilarious." Connor chuckled.
"Haha, she is pretty funny."
"As for sports I do gymnastics and swimming," Connor said.
"Really!? I swim too, are you going to try out for the swim team?"
"Yeah I was going to. Why? Are you going to try out too?" Connor asked Gavin.
"You bet, I hope we both make the team."
"Yeah me too, so now it's my turn to ask you some questions." Connor said with a small smile.
"I will start simple with `where are you from?'"
"I'm from New York and my family just moved here."
"Wow, New York that's far from here, so next is sports and hobbies."
"Okay, I also like to read and...um...and I sing, as far sports you already know that I swim, but I also play baseball."
Connor just sat there and stared at Gavin. Connor was thinking Wow he is like perfect. He sings and plays baseball! Connor started to panic I can't like him! He would never want me anyway, but maybe we can be friends, if I can forget how cute, funny, and smart he is. Connor let out a sad sigh.
"Connor, are you okay?" Gavin was tapping Connor's hand.
"What? Yeah, sorry I'm fine...so you sing. What songs?"
Gavin blushed which didn't go unnoticed by Connor. "Different songs, depends on my mood and who I'm around."
"That's cool...so we still on for lunch?" Connor asked Gavin.
"You know it, don't you have to meet Amanda?"
"Yeah thanks for reminding me. Do you think you could meet me by the courtyard?"
"Sure, no?" the bell interrupted Gavin.
"Okay thanks, see you in like ten minutes," Connor said as he got up and pulled out his phone.
Connor was glad for the chance to call Janett. She would be able to help. Connor made his way down into the courtyard while dialing Janett's cell number. It rang twice before she answered.
"Hey Janett, it's finally lunch time."
"I'm glad to hear from you. How is your first day going so far?"
"Wow, it's been such a day; it feels like it's been a month!"
"Why? What happened? Did anything go wrong?
"Well I made two friends today."
"That's great to hear!"
"And I called a bully an asshole."
"Connor! What were you thinking? Did he hurt you?"
"No no, a teacher came along. The two friends of mine are cool. We might have a problem."
"Why would we have a problem?"
"There's a guy. His name is Gavin and he is really cute and funny and smart. What should I do?"
"You're smart so just be careful and be safe."
"I'm going to meet them both for lunch so I will see you after school right?"
"Of course, I'm just going to pick up Alex up from school then I will come and get you."
"Okay, see you later then."
"Okay bye"
Connor hung up and turned to see both Amanda and Gavin walking towards him. Okay it's time to remember not to fall for him and become best friends with him. He sighed as he looked at Gavin walking towards him it's not going to be easy, but I can try damn it Connor thought as he smiled and went to met them.
(The school days seemed to blend into each other and before either boy knew it, it was October. Connor and Gavin had quickly become best friends along with Amanda. Connor had noticed that his brother was acting weird but figured it was a normal part of him becoming a teenager. Gavin's feelings for Connor grew day by day. Connor seemed to have a block surrounding him keeping him oblivious to how Gavin felt about him. Connor's parents have been fighting more often, so Connor goes out with Gavin more.)
CHAPTER 8
"Hey man, don't forget about the dance tomorrow! You have your costume ready, right?" Gavin said to Connor who was sitting on the grass underneath the tree branch Gavin was sitting on.
"Yeah. How you got me and Amanda to agree to dressing up as the Three Musketeers, I will never know."
"Don't complain, Amanda wanted you to go as Peter Pan, but I said you would never do it," Gavin said with a smirk.
"Well, gosh I would just love to go to the school's Halloween dance in green tights with fake leaves on it." Connor responded sarcastically.
"No matter what, you would look cute." Gavin whispered.
"What did you say?" Connor asked with a small frown.
"I said no matter what we will be the coolest ones there. Just make sure you show up on time." Gavin shot back.
"Whatever, I'm always on time, you're the one who is always late," Connor snapped back quickly.
"Like when, name one time."
"Last weekend, at the movies you, were twenty minutes late, me and Amanda were waiting."
"Fine, you win this one Mr. Ellison."
"I know...I always win." Connor said with a smirk.
"Hmm...we'll see about that."
"Gavin, don't get all competitive! Let's just look at the lake."
"Okay, so how is photography going?"
"It's fine, I have to find a place that matches how I feel when I'm happy. Ms. Overbee gave us a month to find a place and write why it is the place that makes us happy."
"That's cool. Do you have any idea of where that place is?" Gavin said as he peered down at Connor.
"Um...I have one idea, but I'm not sure yet. How is choir going? I don't think I've ever heard you sing."
"It's going fine. I guess sometime soon I will sing for you." Gavin said as a blush crept onto his cheeks.
"Hey, Connor do you want to spend the night after the dance and hang-out over the weekend?" Gavin asked in a shaky voice.
"Um...yeah that should be okay. I'll text you later, before I go to bed, and let you know okay?"
"Okay."
"Hey, Gavin do you remember the first day of school?"
"Yeah I do, like it was yesterday...why'd you ask?"
"No reason really...crap I have to go. I'll meet you at school tomorrow at six ten."
"I better go too so, tomorrow at six ten, right?"
Gavin watched Connor walk through the line of shrubbery that blocked their secret place and thought to himself another day goes by without telling you how I feel about you. Connor, what would you think if you knew that all I want to do is make you happy. I see that small frown that appears when you think no one is looking. I want to kiss those perfect lips and see you smile. My hearts flutters like a butterfly that is trapped. I promise I will sing you a special song? Gavin's thought were interrupted by the sound of his cell phone.
"Hey mom, yeah I'm on my way home right now. Bye." Gavin clambered down from the branch landing with a slight thud. On the way home, his thoughts were all over the place. He was thinking about the swimming tryouts in November, but like most of the time, he was thinking about Connor. He was so deep in thought he didn't notice that he had walked past his house until he heard Lincoln calling his name. Lincoln walked up to him.
"Connor again?" Lincoln said with a small nod.
"Yeah, is it bad that I'm always thinking about him?"
"No, it means you are head-over-heels for him and to be honest I've never seen you this happy."
"Oh my god he might be coming over tomorrow after the dance so you will finally get to meet him face to face." Gavin said with a huge smile.
"Well, good I can't wait to see this guy you've fallen for."
"I know you will really like him...he is smart, funny?" Gavin said with such adoration that Lincoln couldn't help but smile.
"... and he is cute, right? That's what you're going to say next, right? Lincoln interrupted Gavin.
"Shut up...yes, he is incredibly cute." Gavin said as his cheeks started flush.
"Is Lincoln bothering you about Connor again?" Margret said from the front step.
"Sorry madam, but Gavin here can't seem to stop thinking about him so I was having some fun," Lincoln said with a sly smile.
"Well, as long as he washes his own sheets, I don't care how much he thinks about Connor," Margret said trying not to laugh.
"MOM! I cannot believe you just said that! Gavin said as he covered his face with his hands.
"I'm just poking fun," she said as she burst out laughing.
"Connor might be coming over after the dance so behave yourself okay Mom?"
"Finally I will get to meet the boy who has made my son go gaga in only a few weeks."
"Mom, I know you will love him! He is absolutely amazing."
Margret noticed that every time her son mentioned Connor, he would smile like a kid that came down the stairs on Christmas to find his first bike. She hoped this boy would care for her son as much as Gavin cared for him. She won't use the term "love" because she felt it was too soon, but it looked like it might be headed that way or as far as Gavin was concerned. She thought that if it came to it her baby would take a bullet for this Connor. She was very much looking forward to meeting him.
"Mom, did Dad leave for Mt. Fuji already? I thought he was going to be here for dinner and leave tomorrow morning."
"He caught an earlier flight honey, but he told me to tell you that he loves you and will miss you."
"Oh...okay what's for dinner tonight?" Gavin asked.
"I was thinking Chinese food, how does that sound?"
"Okay, that sounds fine, mom?"
"Yes honey?"
"I'll be in my room."
"Alright"
Gavin made his way up the stairs and went straight to his room. Once there he kicked off his shoes and flopped onto the bed. Man, I hope Connor comes over to spend the night tomorrow. I should ask if he wants to share the bed or I could sleep on the floor?wondered Gavin. A loud knock interrupted his thoughts.
"Gavin, can I come in?" asked Lincoln through the door.
"Yeah, come on in."
Lincoln pushed the door open and sat on the edge of the bed next to Gavin.
"What's wrong buddy?" Lincoln asked concerned
"Nothing's wrong."
"If it's about my jokes about you thinking about Connor, I promise that I'll stop."
"No it's not that, I'm just worried about Connor."Gavin sighed.
"Why! Is he sick?" Lincoln asked.
"God I hope not, I just can't tell if he likes me." Gavin sighed
"Well, you guys are best friend's number one, number two, if he is as cute as you say he is and he still doesn't have a girl friend, then it looks good for you." Lincoln said with a small smile as he nudged Gavin. "Dinner will be here soon, so makes sure to wash up, okay?"
"Okay, I'll be ready. I just need a sec."
CHAPTER 9
The next day...
Conner slid into the backseat of the Black Honda Accord with a heavy sigh as he tossed his bag onto the other seat.
"Did you have a tough day sweetie?" Janett asked with a worried frown as she pulled into the street.
"Yeah, I'm just tired and I still have to get ready for the dance tonight and that will take awhile." Connor said with another long sigh.
"Well if it's too much, you can stay home from the dance, which should be fine, right?"
"No, I promised Gavin I would go, so I'm going. I'm just going to need some coffee. Do you think we can pick some up before we get home?"
"Sure, sweetie that's fine" Janett said as she pulled towards a coffee shop with a drive-thru.
"What would you like?"
Connor thought for a second, "a caramel frappachino."
"Okay." Janett placed the order and pulled up to the window. "So, what happened at school today?"
Connor let out another long sigh as he thought of the workload that the teachers were piling on. "There is a lot of work that teachers are giving us. Also, Gavin seems to always want to hang out, but I don't mind that too much." Connor said with a smile as he looked out the window.
"I should let you know that your parents are home tonight."
The smile slid off Connor's face as a deep frown replaced it. "Well, at least I can try and get out of the house without them noticing me."
"Is there anything you would like me to do?" Janett asked as she handed him the coffee.
"No, no I'll just sneak out" Connor said with nervous determination.
"Okay, just be safe. Please call me or text me as soon as it's over."
"Sure, I will." Connor said distractedly.
The car made its way up the drive as the garage door slid open soundlessly. Connor grabbed his bag and with years of practice slid soundlessly as a shadow into the house. He made a B-line for the stairs. As he passed the second floor he heard his parent's voices traveled down the hallway, but he was unable to decipher what they were saying.
"They haven't started fighting yet," a voice said from a little further up the stairs. Connor jumped almost dropping his coffee. "Sorry, didn't mean to scare you." A boy moved further down the stairs. The boy was a younger version of Connor with the same feathery blonde hair, the same slight but muscular body; however the boy had ocean blue eyes rather the Connor's forest green eyes. His English accent was not as strong as Connor's either but it was still evident.
"It's okay Alex. How was your day?" Connor asked while moving up to the floor that he and his brother shared.
"8th grade is 8th grade." Alex answered cryptically. However, Connor gave a nod of understanding. He and Alex had always been close, but he hadn't talked to him in a while other than the common pleasantries.
"Can I have some of that?" Alex asked eyeing the coffee in Connor's hands.
"Sure, but don't drink it all please."
"I won't," Alex said before slipping the straw into his mouth slowly, drinking some of the frappachino before handing it back with a silent nod of thanks.
"I need to get ready for the dance in about two hours; do you think you can help me?"
"Sure, that sounds like fun." Alex said with a bright smile. Connor noticed that the smile did not reach his brother's eyes. If Connor could but it into words, he would have said that his brother's eyes were like a sea of complete and utter sadness. Before Connor could say anything, Alex turned away and looked back and said, "See you in a bit." Alex slipped into his room quietly shutting the door behind him.
Connor looked after Alex worried that something was wrong, but he decided to drop it. He went into his room shutting the door behind him. He looked around the room taking everything in. his desk was in the far corner with his black laptop. Shelves hung from the blue wall holding an array of different books: All three Eragon books, the Twilight series, Angles & Demons, and a few others. His king size bed was against the wall. Connor set his bag sown onto his desk chair and flopped sown onto his bed with a happy laugh as he felt his back crack. Connor laid there embracing the silence of his room, his eyes slowly slid lower and lower until all he saw was black.
"Connor, Connor wake up." A hand was lightly shaking him, trying to wake him.
"Gavin, what are you doing here?" said a still groggy Connor with a crooked smile.
"Connor it's me, Alex."
Connor's eyes flew open. "What time is it? Did I fall asleep?"
"It's 5:45 and yes, you fell asleep," said Alex laughing lightly.
"The dance is at six and I told Gavin I would be there at six ten. I'm going to take a quick shower. While I do that can you grab my costume in the black bag in the back of the closet?"
"Sure, how long will you take in the shower?"
"Five minutes tops." Connor said as he shut the bathroom door behind him. Alex heard the water turn on, he looked around his brother's room before making his way into the closet Alex found the black bag where Connor said it would be. He took it off the hook and took it to the bed where he unzipped it. He pulled out the different pieces of the costume: a fake mustache, a blue poncho thing, a sword, a belt, and a pair of white tights. When he saw the tights, Alex busted up laughing. He dashed out of the room to grab his phone so he could take a picture of this. When he got back to Connor's room, Connor came out of the closet wearing white compression pants similar to what he wears when he does gymnastics. Alex looked up to his brother; he hoped he could be amazing like him.
Connor saw Alex enter the room.
"So, those are some nice tights." Alex chuckled. Connor glanced over to the bed where the tights were laid out.
"It looks like I have no choice, no wonder Gavin was laughing yesterday." Connor sighed.
"What time are you going to get back, because I was thinking that we could play some videogames?" Alex asked with a hopeful smile.
"I'm not coming back to night. Sorry Alex but I'm spending the night at Gavin's." Connor said while struggling to pull on the tights.
"Oh...okay." Alex said. Connor thought he sounded happier but he could tell he was still sad/ Connor glanced at the clock and saw it was ten minutes to six.
"Crap, I'm running out of time and I still need to finish getting ready!" Connor said frantically.
"Maybe you should throw on the blue poncho thing and the belt. You can finish when you get there so you're not late."
"Yeah, I think you're right. Can you go grab the belt while I go find a white long-sleeve shirt and throw on the poncho." Connor said as he made his way back into the closet, poncho in hand. When Connor re-emerged, he was dressed as a three musketeer. Alex got down on one knee and held up the belt and sword.
"Your sword Sir Connor." Alex said before bursting into a fit of laughter. The laughter was contagious because Connor too burst out laughing.
"J...just hand it o...over A...Alex" Connor sputtered.
"Here you go," Alex said after recovering. Connor took the sword that Alex had held up for him. He put the belt and sword on, almost completing the outfit. Connor's phone beeped. Connor grabbed his phone off the bedside table reading the text message.
"Who was that from?" Alex asked while he tried to peer over Connor's shoulder. Connor slid his phone shut.
"It was from Gavin, he asked if I was on the way. I told him I'm leaving know." Alex gave Connor a searching look.
With some hesitation Alex asked, "Are you scared of going to the dance?"
Connor blushed but his eyes hardened. "I'm a little nervous, it's my first dance." Looking at the clock on his bedside table, "I need to go or I'll be late." Both Connor and Alex stepped out into the hallway shutting the door behind them. Alex shot Connor a sheepish glance before giving him a hug.
"Have fun tonight, okay?" Alex said as he let go.
"Oh...before I forget," Alex said as he pulled out his phone, "I have to get a picture of you."
"Okay real quick, I need to get going I can't be late." Connor said as he stood against the wall looking at the phone as Alex took the picture.
"Got it, thanks Connor." Alex said as he flashed a smile.
"Sure, later Z." Connor said as he hurried down the stairs. Alex made his way to his to room thinking, he hasn't called me Z in a long time.
I can't be late, Gavin is waiting for me?. These thoughts flew through his head. He hadn't heard his parents' loud voices from the kitchen until he rounded the corner and saw them at the end of the kitchen. They had glasses in their hands with half-empty and completely empty bottles scattered on the counter. Both his mom and dad were yelling at each other with barely understandable words. Connor could only make out words like "bitch" and "asshole". He turned to leave but the sword on his hip smacked against the low cabinet with a loud "THWACK". The yells stopped abruptly.
"Look at who it is, our stupid son." Charles, Connor's father, said with a sneer. Connor kept his head down. "Look at me boy!" Charles yelled. Connor kept his head down, his heartbeat steadily increased with fear. He had always been careful to avoid his parents. He felt like he had walked into the path of a mad rhino. Connor was about to take another step forward then without warning, glass shattered inches away from his head. Without thinking, he ducked to the side as another bottle shattered where he had stood. "Come here right now," his father's voice was low with undisguised anger and disgust. Connor hesitated for another second. Then stood and walked slowly towards his parents. The smell of alcohol overpowering, but he took a few more steps putting himself just outside hitting range. "Where do you think you're going?" his father sneered.
"I...I'm going to the school dance, the Halloween dance," came Connor's quite reply.
"Oh, got yourself a girl, do you?" Charles sneered with sarcasm.
"N...no, I'm going with some friends."He stuttered with fear as his dad moved forward.
"I don't remember saying you could go."
"I didn't w...want to bother you," came the stuttered reply. Connor looked behind him as he looked back to his father, a stinging pain exploded on his face. His father slapped him again sending Connor staggering sideways. A distant memory came to the forefront as he recalled his father's boxing past. This had come too late, as a fist connected with his kidney. Connor dropped to his knees with the sudden pain. Why? What did I do to deserve this? Connor thought as he struggled to breath.
"My, you are worthless little shit aren't you?" sneered Connor's dad as he returned to his drink. Connor used the counter to hold himself up. Fresh tears burned his eyes; anger and sadness built up behind them. He thinks I'm worthless, he's right I can't do anything. Connor coughed, refreshing the pain. He closed his eyes trying to focus. A bottle smashed against his knee making him cry out.
"Leave him alone already." A neutral voice said. Connor looked up to see is mom pouring herself another glass of wine her face emotionless.
"You're right, get out of my sight you worthless piece of shit." Anger flared within Connor. He forgot his pain, picked up a bottle and launched it at his father. There was a loud smash as the bottle struck Charles' shoulder; he let out a gasp of pain. Connor already had a half-full bottle of brandy ready to throw at his father. His father turned to face Connor, Connor shrunk back as fear washed away his anger. A low hiss of anger came from his dad's mouth followed by another low hiss of, "Get out of my house." Fear crashed down on him in fresh waves. The bottle of brandy clutched in his right hand, now forgotten. Connor moved back slowly trying to move into the hallway. "Get your tight wearing ass out of my house now!"Charles' yelled with venom that sucked any warmth from Connor's body. Connor moved back faster, careful not to trip. Another crash came inches from his foot. Bottles started crashing all around Connor. He ran without any place in mind. He was so forgone with fear, he wasn't even aware that he had started to drink the brandy. Where can I go? No one wants me around. Connor sadly thought as he stopped in the middle of the road. A car sped up the lane and as it approached Connor, it honked. The horn broke through his thoughts, not stopping to think he ran into the forest of bushes and trees trying to find the little clearing he had shared with Gavin. The branches cut into the tights and scraped against his face. As he blundered through the bushes, he continued to nurse the bottle of brandy, glad for once that his parents bought the large bottles of alcohol. At last, he found the clearing. He slumped down against the tree and looked out over the lake. As the brandy had begun to take effect on Connor, he began to slip from the real world and into a drunken stupor. The only thing he noticed was his drink.
