WEAVER X

Chapter One: Beginning.

Alex stared at the ground fixedly, ignoring the taunts of the kids around him. A whole new school and it had only taken a couple of weeks for the teasing to begin again. Hitching his bag up on his shoulder, he pushed his way into the crowd of teenagers and strode determinedly up the footpath, away from the school and the seemingly never-ending stream of insults.

"Well, look what we have here." Micah Duprey hadn't been the first to make it his mission to bug Alex, he was merely the next of a long line of bullies. "If it isn't our star scholar and resident book-boy."

Alex ignored him and his faithful gang of petty thugs and continued down the footpath, trying not to let his apprehension show.

"What? Got nothing to say?" Ryan Miles, Micah's best friend and partner in crime taunted. "You had plenty to say earlier."

Alex hadn't been able to help himself. He'd seen Micah and Ryan picking on a pretty first year and without thinking he'd gone over and distracted them with insults long enough for the girl to get away. On reflection, calling them the slime that covered the bottom of the gene pool, may not have been the best idea.

As he attempted to walk past them, Micah shoved him back. "Where the fuck do you think you're going?" He snarled, the distraction Alex had provided at lunch had been very loud and very public, clearly Micah thought Alex had to pay a price for his public humiliation.

"If you're going to try and hurt me Micah," Alex looked up at the slightly larger form of his tormentor, "Don't you think it's a better idea to wait until I've gone down a quiet street where there aren't any witnesses." Alex gestured behind him to the heaving mass of students rushing out of school. "An assault charge would fuck your probation right up."

Alex had the pleasure of seeing Micah's face go blank for a long moment before he stepped aside. "Don't think that this is the end of it." His voice dripped with barely restrained malice. "I will get you."

Alex raised an eyebrow and drew his lips back in a thin, bloodless smile. "I don't doubt it." His tone was dry and he continued up the hill. He'd only gone a few steps when pain exploded in his head, staggering, he touched a hand to the back of his head and drew it back, covered in blood.

Alex turned to see Micah hefting another rock as his friends laughed, seconds later, the rock made impact, slamming into Alex's cheek. Pain blossomed once more and darkness began to loom as Alex watched Micah bend over to pick up yet another rock.

On the edge of darkness, Alex felt something in his mind snap, it was almost a physical sensation. Micah straightened and threw the rock, in an instinctive reaction Alex hurled up his hand in defence and waited for the rock to impact, it didn't. Cautiously he glanced over at Micah and his friends. They stood staring at the rock, halted mid-flight, still hovering in the air.

Alex warily lowered his hand and the rock dropped out of the air, hitting the footpath with a clatter. Suddenly afraid, Alex looked up from the pebble and at Micah, then ran.

Alex slammed opened his front door, breathless from running. Quickly he did a check of the house, no-one was home yet. He paused to catch his breath, but fear leaping inside him, like prey caught in a spider's web, drove him up to his room. Hurriedly, he emptied his school bag out on his bed and started to stuff clothes in it. He faltered as his hand passed over a picture of he and his mum, taken in better times, before she'd 'found' god. Picking it up, he sat heavily on his bed and let the tears flow freely, fear and confusion poured out in bitter saltiness as his gaze shifted from the picture to his hands.

His hands. Alex stared at them for a long minute. He had felt something, some kind of connection between him and the floating rock in his hands. It was why he had run, had to run. He shuddered involuntarily and dropped the picture on the bed, standing he glanced wildly around his room, seeking anything else he wished to take with his eyes. Finding nothing, Alex took one last look at his plain, unadorned room and left. There was no room for a mutant in his mother's house.
