"Well that was unexpected" Book 2 Chapter 32

I woke to the sound of my cell and looked at the clock on the hotel bedrooms bedside table, It was Dale calling me.
"Hey man, how's Italy?" I asked.
"Never mind that, I have just spoken to Mark; what's this about Cal giving away a kidney?" he asked, sounding somewhat pissed.
"His sister was sick" I replied.
"What sister, he doesn't have a sister" he replied, and I could hear Todd in the background. Despite being annoyed it was great to hear their voices.
"Dale, Dale, give me a chance" I said, snickering as I said so.
And over the following ten minutes, I gave them a brief rundown of what had transpired over the past week and a half.
"You couldn't write it" Dale replied.
"Tell me about it".
"So he's already given his kidney?" he asked.
"Yeah, and as far as the hospital knows it was successful" I replied.
"And Cal, how is he, and how are you holding up?" he asked, yeah he knows me so well.
"He's recovering, and I am just about coping" I responded the best I could.
"Hey man, how are you, really?" he asked, again. As I said, he knows me.
"Look, after what we have been through, shit!!! this is just one of life's hiccups" I replied.
"So, when are you heading home?" he asked.
"Well, we have cut short our internship, Cal needs time to recover. So, another week here and then back to Boston, then back here a week later for the wedding" I replied, and smiled at the last part.
"Cool, we are heading off to Milan tomorrow before flying back on Friday. Todd wants to catch a Soccer match. They call it Football over here, you know that" he informed and asked in the same sentence.
"Yeah, it's us that call it Soccer, the rest of the planet calls it Football; so perhaps we have the name wrong" I replied as Dale had subtly changed the conversation away from Cal.
"Yeah, maybe" he replied.
"Look dude, this call is going to dent my college fund, so see you next week. Love you dude" he said and again the heart felt feelings I have for my best friend have me smiling.
"Yeah, back at you" I responded and hung up on the call.
I climbed out of bed but sighed at the sight of the empty side that would have been occupied by Cal. I had a quick shower and my weekly shave, it grows so slow; a blessing I guess, Cal and Dale are the same. Todd however, shaves daily, sometimes twice in summer months.
I had already contacted Gramps before I headed downstairs to get some breakfast. I sat opposite both his grandparents and said the customary good mornings.
"You sleep alright, Joshua?" Grandma asked and I acknowledged with a nod as I had just taken a bite of toast.
"Sorry" I said after swallowing.
"No problem, you are still a growing boy, eat up" she smiled and took a sip of her coffee.
"I spoke to Cal before I went to sleep" I informed them.
"Thought he might have called, how did he sound?" Gramps asked.
"Tired, very tired" I replied.
"Yeah, it was a long day; but he gets the drains out today, and his catheter, as well" Gramps added.
"Yeah, I know how those feel all too well" I replied remembering my long week with that thing stuck in my dick. Not one of life's little pleasures I can tell you, unless you like that sort of thing, I didn't.
"I spoke to the doctor before we left yesterday, they will check for infections and monitor him until tomorrow afternoon, and if he's okay he can come out tomorrow afternoon" Gramps informed me; but Cal already told me this during our late-night chat.
"Great" I replied, sipping my orange juice.
Gramps ordered a cab about an hour later and we headed back to the hospital. Grandma was messing around with some fruit basket, which I know Cal will not use. He gets a bit windy when he eats fruit, and I can tell you they don't smell like strawberries and banana's. I comment every time he eats fruit that his farts could be bottled and sold on the open market as weapons of mass destruction.
"He'd like that" I said and she looked at me and laughed a little.
"What's so funny?" I asked.
"This is for Kathleen, I know all too well what fruit does to my grandson" she snickers a little bit more.
"Thank God, I keep telling him he should see a doctor before he sends me to one" I laughed, as did they.
A few miles later we pulled up outside the main entrance and spotted McDermott and Dillon sitting on a wooden bench.
"Hey" I said as I told Gramps and Grandma to head in.
"Hey Josh, just getting a bit of air" Dillon said and then McDermott stood up, fuck he is huge.
"Been here long?" I asked.
"Yeah, attended an assault and came to talk to the supposed victim. Waste of time, he's not pressing any charges..... are you" he said, and I looked at McDermott.
"Pffffft, who attacked him, and do they have a death wish?" I spat out in total disbelief.
"It was his brother" Dillon responded.
"Yeah, and it's my problem, and I will handle it, okay?" The giant replied.
"Is he as big as you?" I asked.
"Na, half brother, half my size" McDermott explained.
"Homophobe?" I asked.
"No, he has issues; he got fired last year from the department, drug use" He replied.
"So, why the assault on you, did you fire him?" I asked.
"No, but I arrested him. He was supplying a local gym with steroids" Dillon responded for him.
"The issue is that his brother is dating the cop that busted him, not the fact he's gay" Dillon added.
"Yeah he came at me with blood is thicker than water shit. I told him that Dillon was my life, and he was my brother, so back off. I turned to leave and he threw a bottle at me, just grazed me is all" he said.
"Nice brother" I respond.
"He's not all bad, okay the drug use and the dealing shit, but he's always had my back, you know" he replied, knowing that sounded lame, even to him.
"He's not getting back in the house" Dillon insisted.
"Yeah I know, sorry" McDermott said squeezing Dillons hand.
"Okay guys, need to see the better half of me, so excuse me" I said and they hugged me, a light hug from both. Fuck, McDermott would kill me if he hugged me. I remember when Mark hugged me after my attack, and I am not even hurt this time, but he was gentle.
I walked into the hospital and headed for Cal's room. I walked in and his face lit up when our eyes met, and yeah, twitch city.
"How you feeling?" I asked leaning down, kissing him softly.
"Like I lost the battle with a prize bull" he replied
I leaned in and whispered "And hows little Cal?" and he looked a little shocked.
"Little?" he replied
"Oh, so he's fine" I could not help but snicker at his embarrassment as his grandparents looked on as he blushed.
"There he is, go see your uncle Cal" Nathan rescued me, coming into the room.
"Are you my unky Cal?" he asked, and Cal, now beaming, nodded and tried to sit up, with a little discomfort.
"Like unky Dilly?" he asked.
"Yes, like unky Dilly" Cal replied.
"Are you sick like mommy?" he asked.
"No, I will be fine; so will your mommy, I promise" Cal replied and little Nathan smiled and ran to Nathan senior.
"Daddy, mommy ok" he says, climbing back into his dads arms and kisses his cheek. I never even thought of myself as a parent; but watching how Nathan tends to his son, well I will not rule it out, just not right now.
"Sure she is. scamp" Nathan replies.
"How are you feeling, Cal?" Nathan asks.
"Oh, could be worse. I wont lie, it feels like I've been beat up bad" and he looks at me, realizing what he just said and I squeezed his hand. I knew what he meant.
"Sorry babe" he whispered.
The following day Cal was able to be discharged, and we moved into Nathan and Kathleen's home. They insisted, we did not refuse. I made up a bed on the sofa to make sure he was comfortable. Nothing was more important to me right now than Cal.
"She looked good today, didn't she?" Cal asked. "She has some color, babe, yeah she looked good" I replied.
"Nathan said the doctor is happy for her to go home in a week or so. I'm so glad I came Josh" he said. and I could see a tear trickling down his face.
"Hey hey, she's alive and will have a full life, and thats because of you. Nathan will have a mother to see him grow, and again, thats all you" I add.
"Fuck, I wish this would hurry the fuck up and heal" he adds, sounding annoyed.
"It will, just give it time babe" I reply.
"No, you don't understand. Every time you encourage me and praise me, you turn me on; and right now I am fucking hard as I have ever been" he adds, looking sad, and I had to laugh.
"Not fucking funny" he bemoaned, I slid my hand under the small travel blanket I had covering him and squeezed his junk, and fuck he was hard.
"Babe please, its been 3 days" he begged.
"I do owe you one" I add and slid onto the floor, kneeling in front of him. I removed the blanket and pulled his pajama pants down.
"Josh, fuck" he moaned as I took him into my mouth.
I knew Nathan would not be home until much later, baby Nathan was at his grandmothers and I was taking full advantage of that fact.
"Jesus fucking Christ" I heard him moan, it always got me hard listening to him cuss when we have sex. I hardly ever hear him swear outside of sex.
"JOSH" he screamed as he came inside my mouth. I swallowed every drop he produced, and since it had been a few days, he had plenty to give. His flushed face and his labored breath, his wanting lips, we kissed; his tongue was demanding entry to my mouth. I loved this guy so fucking much it hurt.
A couple of hours later, Nathan was heard talking away to his son. I cuddled beside Cal.
"You ever think about kids, Josh?" he asked as Nathan had disappeared to put his son to bed.
"Do you?" I replied.
"Never really thought about it if I am honest" he answered.
"Well, do you, Josh?" he asked again.
"One day, yeah; my parents were great" I replied and I could see the hurt in his face; shit I fucked up.
"So were mine..... I mean, in the beginning. Okay Mom is trying. I rang her this morning while you were a sleep, I didn't mention Kathleen to her" he replied
"Why not?" I asked.
"Actually I don't know why, just thought Kathleen has the right to decide if she wanted any contact with her, so I said nothing" he replied, and I squeezed his shoulder.
"So, if we decide we wanted kids, how many" he asked.
"Did you enjoy being an only child?" I asked.
"No, fucking hated it" he replied.
"Well, there is your answer, I loved being a big brother, Lucas was a pain in the ass when he was first born; but even at my tender age I knew I would defend him with everything I was" I replied.
"He's a great kid" he replied.
"Lets just enjoy each other for now. Kids, yeah at some point, would be great" I said, hugging him as Nathan came back into the room carrying some freshly made coffee.
"Thanks Nathan" I said as he handed us the drinks.
"Oh honestly, my pleasure" he responded, taking a seat.
We sat silent for a while, Cal hugging into me, and I into him. I looked over at Nathan and he was just staring at Cal; I could see his eyes were wet and tearing a little.
"You are truly a remarkable person, Cal. You don't even know us and you risk your own health to save a stranger" he said, getting more than a little emotional.
"Today was the day the doctors indicated she might just about last to; but you saved her man, you saved my family, and I can't ever repay that" he added, tears now flowing freely.
"Nathan, as soon as I knew I had a sister, what was I to do? I couldn't not help. Josh will tell you, the night before, I was questioning my decision; but only for a short time. Nathan, what I have done for Kathleen is probably the most important thing I have ever done, and I do not regret a single thing" Cal said and Nathan stood up and walked over and just pressed his hand to Cal's chest.
"You have a good heart, and you are the greatest man I have ever met, Calumn Kenner. Selflessness personified" he added.
"I'm getting married in a couple of weeks, do you and Kathleen want to come?" Cal asked
"Try and stop us" Nathan replied, and Cal smiled at his brother in law, and that brought a smile to my face.
A few days passed, Cal recuperating still, but healing well. Kathleen was released a week after her life saving operation. She, too, would require plenty of rest, but she also looked forward to attending our wedding.
Todd, Dale and the girls were back in Boston and called every day. Dale offered to fly down and help with Cal; but Cal's Grandpa organized a chartered flight back to Boston so he could continue to rest. After all, we get married in a week, and I haven't even written my vows yet.....fuck!!
To be continued..... Hey guys hope you are still with me, sorry for the delays, but family friends and heartache gets in the way.
The lead up to the wedding will cover the next few chapters, and of course the wedding in Chicago, and maybe the meeting of Kathleen and her Mother perhaps.
