When You Least Expect It

Chapter 7

June tenth made its way around and found me at the airport picking up my baby brother. Jeff and I stood outside gate 27B waiting for the passengers to get off the plane.

"So, you think he's going to be excited?" Jeff asked.

"I think he will. He hasn't been there yet. I thought we'd at least make two weeks eventful for him." I said.

"He's happy just spending time with you." Jeff smiled.

The passengers from the flight started leaving.

"There's my brother and his boyfriend." Someone yelled. Jeff looked over and grinned. DJ let go of the flight attendants hand and ran over to us. "CJ!"

"Hey little man," I said hugging him tightly. I placed a kiss on his head. "How was your flight?"

"It was fun! I got to see the cockpit and the pilots. Look! I got some pilot wings. Lisa took care of me." DJ said happily as the flight attendant.

"Hi Mr. Jameson, I just need your signature on this line right here." She said.

"Thank you Lisa, for taking care of my baby brother." I said shaking her hand. I gave her a tip.

"It was my pleasure. He is such a sweetheart. He's going to be a heartbreaker when he gets older." Lisa said. I laughed.

"Oh no doubt, he's a charmer." I said.

"Thank you Lisa," DJ said hugging the lady.

"It was my pleasure sweetie. You be good and enjoy your vacation." Lisa said heading back to the plane.

"Hi Jeff," DJ said excitedly as he hugged Jeff.

"Hey kiddo," Jeff said returning the hug.

"When we get out to the car, we'll call Mom and Dad to let them know you made it safely." I said.

"Okay," DJ said.

"Are you hungry?" Jeff asked.

"Yes. Can we go see Michael?" My little brother asked.

"He'd be upset if we didn't have lunch there." I said.

I called my parents as I drove over to the restaurant.

"Hi CJ, hi Jeff,"

"Hey Dawn," I said.

"Michael's been a crackhead all morning. You would've thought that he was an expecting father." She said. Jeff and I laughed.

"Where's Mikey?" DJ said.

"Listen you little monster call me that again and I'm not taking you for ice cream ever again." Michael laughed from behind us. DJ grinned running and jumping into his arms.

"Hi Mikey, I missed you." DJ said.

"What makes you think I missed you? And who says you can get away with calling me Mikey?" Michael joked.

"Everyone misses me. And I can call you Mikey because I'm cute." DJ answered. We all laughed.

"Whoever says you're cute is lying," Michael said. I looked at him.

"Nuh uh... CJ never lies." The little boy said.

"Fine, you're cute. Don't let that go to your head." Michael told him. "Shit! I have to go back to the kitchen to finish the pork tenderloins."

"Language," Jeff and DJ said. I laughed. Michael glared at them.

"Yeah, yeah, yeah... I know, I know... Impressionable ears," He said rolling his eyes. "Do you guys know what you're eating?"

"What do you recommend?" I asked.

"I recommend that you bite me," Michael said laughing.

"I want shrimp." DJ said.

"Me too," Jeff said.

"Make that three shrimp dishes." I said.

He glared at all of us.

"And don't make them all the same thing." I said.

"Asshole," Michael said.

"Language," DJ said. Michael laughed and walked back to the kitchen.

Fifteen minutes later he came back with three different shrimp dishes. The three of us shared our dishes with each other.

"Did you find me a babysitter for when you're at work?" DJ asked.

"Yep, Mrs. Montez's daughter is going to watch you when Jeff and I are at work." I answered.

"Is she nice?" He asked.

"Yeah, she is. Gabby is a nice girl you'll like her. She's excited about watching you. I took her down for CPR and first aid certification two weeks ago. With the training she took she'll be able to take you and Marco down to the pool." I said.

Gabriella and Marco Montez are my neighbor's kids. Lupe Montez is a single mother that had moved in next door after the Mom and Jeff's mom and sister left. Gabby is sixteen and Marco is ten.

"When we get home I'll introduce them to you. They're coming over for dinner." I said.

"Cool," DJ said.

We continued to eat with some idle chit chat here and there.

"Are we going to do anything else while I'm here?" My baby brother asked.

"We'll be doing a few things." I answered.

"Like what?" DJ asked.

"Going to the movies and maybe going to the amusement park." I said.

"Cool! I want to go to Circus Circus again." He said happily. Jeff and I smiled.

After lunch we said goodbye to Michael and headed to the grocery store to pick up some things for dinner.

I carried DJ's bags as Jeff carried in the groceries.

"Hey Colin, hey Jeff,"

"Hi Gabby, come on over and you can meet DJ." I said.

DJ carried his bag to his room as I put the groceries away.

"CJ?" Gabby called from the door.

"Come on in Gabby," I said as she walked into the kitchen.

"Hey Gabby," Jeff said as he walked in with DJ.

"Dalton, this is Gabby she's going to be babysitting you while Jeff and I work. Gabby this is my baby brother Dalton or DJ." I introduced them.

DJ hid behind Jeff with a shy smile. Jeff and I laughed.

"I've never seen you this shy DJ." Jeff said.

"Hi DJ, I can't wait to start babysitting you. Mom and Marco should be home soon. She took him to get his haircut." Gabby said.

"Hi," DJ said.

"Why are you being shy?" I asked.

"I'm not." He said softly.

"Gabby you're all still coming over for dinner right?" I said.

"Yeah, mom's really excited about not having to cook." She said. I laughed.

"Well, I'll make dinner worth her while then." I said.

Jeff went over and cracked open the front door. I filled some glasses with iced tea.

"Knock knock,"

"Hi Lupe, come on in." Jeff said.

"Hi Mom," Gabby said.

"Hi Lupe, hi Marco," I said. "This is my baby brother DJ. DJ, this is Mrs. Montez and her son Marco."

"Hello Mrs. Montez, hi Marco," DJ said shyly.

"If you ever need a night out Lupe you know you can have Gabby and Marco stay here." I said.

"Thanks CJ," She said.

"I'll hook up the game system later DJ so you and Marco can play video games." Jeff said.

"You have a video game system?" DJ asked.

"Jeff bought it for you." I said.

DJ jumped up and hugged Jeff tightly.

"You're the best brother in law." He said. Jeff grinned.

"I'm not your brother in law yet." Jeff said.

"No, but you will be." DJ said as he walked out of the kitchen. I stared after my baby brother.

Jeff set the table as I pulled the crab and herb stuffed salmon out of the oven.

"What else can I do babe?" Jeff asked walking into the kitchen.

"Put the asparagus and hollandaise sauce on the table too please," I said.

Throughout dinner the Montez family got to know DJ. By the end of dinner DJ and Marco were like old friends. Jeff set up the game system for the boys and Gabby while Jeff and I talked with Lupe.

"This was such an incredible meal." She said.

"Glad you liked it." I smiled.

"When did you want Gabby to start babysitting DJ?" Lupe asked.

"Well, we're driving down to California for two weeks. We're taking DJ to Disneyland, Sea World, and some other places and then we'll be back to work." Jeff said.

"That will be a good trip. DJ will love it." She said. "When are you guys leaving?"

"We're leaving Thursday morning." I answered.

"Great," Lupe said.

"Where are we going?" DJ asked coming up and standing between my legs.

"Jeff and I are taking you to California for a couple weeks." I answered him.

"What are we going to do there?" He asked.

"We're going to Disneyland, San Diego Zoo, Sea World, and some other places." Jeff said.

DJ whooped excitedly.

"Why are we up so early?" DJ grumbled. I laughed.

"So, we can get there and hopefully miss the traffic." I answered.

Jeff walked back in from taking our bags down to the car.

"Are we going to stop for breakfast?" Jeff asked.

"Just for some coffee, I made some breakfast sandwiches." I said.

"We definitely need coffee." He said as he kissed my cheek.

Jeff carried the cooler downstairs as DJ and I carried the bags of food.

It took us five and a half hours for us to get to the Extended Stay in San Diego. We checked in and unpacked.

"Who's hungry?" I asked.

"How about we go to Old Town?" Jeff suggested.

"Do you want Mexican food DJ?" I asked.

"Yeah tacos," He said.

"After lunch we'll come back and rest." Jeff said.

"Definitely," I said.

We walked around the shops in Old Town after we finished lunch. We stopped in the candy store and got some saltwater taffy for DJ.

By the time we got back onto the freeway my baby brother was asleep. Jeff carried him up to the room when we got back to the hotel. I laid the bags on the table by the window as Jeff laid DJ on his bed.

"I'm all hot and sticky. Come shower with me," Jeff said softly. I looked at him and smiled.

"Let's go," I said with my hand out to him.

We grabbed a change of clothes out of our bags and ran into the bathroom. We kissed as Jeff turned the shower on and we waited for the water to heat up. Our hands were all over each others' body. Our lips were continually in contact. We soaped each other down and let our hands roam.

"God you're so beautiful." Jeff said. I blushed.

I pulled him up and kissed him deeply.

"I love you CJ," Jeff said after we parted.

"I love you too Jeff." I said.

"How are you feeling?" Jeff asked worriedly. We toweled off.

"It may have been awhile but I feel good. A little sore but it was well worth it." I said before pulling him into a deep kiss.

There was a knock at the bathroom door. "Are you two done yet? I gotta pee."

Jeff and I laughed and got dressed. As soon as we opened the door DJ rushed in, pulled his shorts down, and started peeing.

"When you're done kiddo take a bath." I said.

"Okay CJ," He said.

We lay on the bed as we waited for DJ to shower. I fell asleep in Jeff's arms with him humming softly.

"Baby, wake up." Jeff said softly.

"What's wrong?" I asked. Jeff and DJ laughed.

"Nothing, we figured we'd wake you so we can go to dinner." He said.

"What time is it?" I asked.

"Just about seven, we're going to Mister Tiki for dinner. We'll have a cab waiting for us downstairs." Jeff said.

"Okay." I said getting out of the bed. I went to the bathroom to wash my face and brush my teeth.

The three of us headed downstairs and waited for the cab.

Ten minutes later we were in downtown San Diego and walking into the Mister Tiki restaurant.

"Hi guys, do you have reservations?" The hostess asked.

"It should be under Marshall, Jeff Marshall." Jeff said.

"Ah, yes. Party of three, right this way," She smiled.

We followed her to a booth that looked out towards the street.

"Enjoy your meals. Your server will be Gavin." She said before walking away.

The three of us looked over the menu.

"Wow, everything sounds good." Jeff said.

"It does," I said.

I looked over at DJ and he was staring at me with a smile.

"Yes, you can have shrimp if you want." I smiled and shook my head.

"Hi guys, I'm Gavin. I'll be your server tonight. Can start you off with drinks and appetizers?" A cute surfer boy asked.

"What do you want to drink kiddo?" Jeff asked.

"A Sprite please," DJ answered.

"I'll try the Coconut Kiss," Jeff said.

"And I'll try the Sake Tsunami." I said.

"And for appetizers we'll do the sushi platter and the dim sum sampler." Jeff said.

"Got it, I'll be right back with your drinks and I'll take your orders for dinner." Gavin said.

"Thank you," Jeff and I said.

"Do you know what you want DJ?" I asked.

"Instead of shrimp, I want the stuffed sashimi trio." DJ answered.

"What are you having babe?" Jeff asked me.

"I'm thinking of the New York steak and frites." I said.

"That's what I was leaning towards too." He smiled.

Gavin returned with our drinks.

"Have you all decided on what you were having for dinner?" He asked.

I looked at DJ and nodded.

"Can I please have the stuffed sashimi trio?" He asked. Gavin smiled.

"That's my favorite," Gavin said. DJ grinned.

"I'll have the New York steak and frites. I want my steak medium rare please." I said.

"I'll have it the same way." Jeff said.

"Great! I've got two New York steak and frites, medium rare, and a stuffed sashimi trio." Gavin repeated.

"Yep," Jeff said.

"I'll put this order in and your appetizers should be ready so we'll bring those out." He said and walked off.

"What are we doing tomorrow?" DJ asked.

"We're going to the zoo and Sea World." I answered.

"Cool!" He said.

Gavin brought out the appetizers and two more orders of our drinks.

Gavin had our food boxed up and brought the bill. Jeff took the bill from him.

"Jeffrey!" I said. He grinned.

"I got it babe," He said. "This is our vacation and I know that we were both saving up especially for this trip. Plus you bought all our tickets to the different parks and said I was not to give you money for them."

I shook my head at him as he came over to help me up. I gave him a quick kiss. Jeff signed the receipt slip that Gavin brought back and we left. I looked at Jeff.

"I left him a fifty dollar tip." Jeff said. "Dinner wasn't that expensive but he did an awesome job."

I smiled at him as he grabbed my hand. DJ held my other hand as he held the leftover food.

"I've been learning when I go out with you." Jeff laughed. I'm a generous tipper when the server does a real good job.

We walked around downtown before trying to flag down a cab. We passed a homeless guy and DJ looked at me. I smiled at him and pulled out my wallet giving him a twenty dollar bill. He looked at the bag of food and I nodded.

We stopped and watched as DJ walked back to the guy digging through the trash.

"Excuse mister." DJ said.

"Hey little man," The guy said.

"Here's some food that we had leftover from dinner. It's really good, you'll like it. Here's twenty dollars for you to get some food too. I hope you don't use it on beer or anything bad." My baby brother said. The guy smiled and looked at us. He had tears in his eyes.

"I promise you that I won't use this money on alcohol or drugs." He said.

"Good!" DJ smiled and shook the man's hand.

He ran back over to us turned around and waved to the homeless man.

"That was a good thing you did." I said hugging DJ to me.

"I wish I could help more." DJ said.

"When you're older maybe you'll become a social worker or something." I said.

"Maybe," He said.

Jeff flagged down a cab and we headed back to the hotel. It was eleven by the time we were all in bed.
