Chapter 8
Brad
All morning I couldn't get it out of my head that Keith Baxter might be gay. I was so happy just thinking that he might really like me. The morning sort of dragged because I had decided to hunt him down at lunch and talk to him.
"Hey Sandy! Uh you haven't seen Keith, have you?"
"No. He usually sits with his friends over there."
I walk over to the table his friends were sitting at.
"Hey, guys you seen Keith Baxter?"
"I think he left," said one kid shyly.
"Why?"
He shrugged his shoulders.
Another kid said, "Acton hit him."
"What?" I said, "Why?"
He too shrugged his shoulders.
I left to go find Acton the Asshole. I never liked him despite the fact that he was a good linebacker. He always had a bad attitude always bragging about how many girls he fucked. Of course I found him bullying some poor freshman geek.
"Leave him alone, Acton," I said coldly.
"Come on Brad, I'm just messing with the little faggot."
My adrenaline forged through my veins, "Leave him alone."
"Or what? You can't tell me what to do."
"Yeah, but I can get you kick off the team. Coach doesn't like bullies, I don't like bullies."
"Yeah, well I don't like gays."
I grabbed him by the collar and slammed him into the wall. I was beyond anger. "Why did you hit Keith Baxter?"
"He's a faggot. You said so yourself."
"I never said that!"
"Yeah, well I heard you this morning when you was talking with your bitch."
"Yeah, well Keith Baxter isn't gay but I am and what you heard was me wishing Keith was gay cuz I think he's hot."
Now the thing is I am not a match for Acton but you don't think about things like that when you're mad and I was mad. I threw the first punch and got in a couple more before someone pulled us apart. Luckily it was our teammates that broke us apart and not some teacher.
"Dude you better go to the nurse's office," said Jon Greenfield.
"Yeah," I said and walked off. I was worried about Keith so I went to my car and left for the Baxter's. I tried to remember my conversation with Sandy, but my mind wasn't working so well. The next thing I knew I was ringing the doorbell.
I turned around and was about to walk away when the door opened and someone shoved me from behind causing me to fly forward and almost loose my balance.
"YOU FUCKING BASTARD!" yelled Luc.
I awkwardly spun around to face Luc. He was poised to slug me but he froze.
"Well, I see someone beat me to it. Why? Why, did you out my brother to Acton? I thought we were friends! Are you that much of a homophobe? You hurt my brother! Just – just fuck off," Luc said angrily.
I felt like my world was collapsing and there was nothing I could do to stop it.
"Luc, what's going on? Brad?" Keith stepped out of the door.
"It's not what you think, I didn't out you. I would never do that on purpose! I'm not a homophobe. I'm gay. Sandy's known that for years. She's known that I've had a crush on you since I first saw you with Luc at school. She said when you ran off this morning that you were like me – Acton must of heard me say something about you being gay being the asshole that he is – I-I didn't hear about it until lunch," I said to Keith, "Acton and I aren't exactly friends, but – anyway I was worried about you. I knew I had goofed up...I outed myself – I told Acton you weren't gay that what I had actually said was I wished you were gay cuz I had a crush on you. "
"You have a crush on me?" asked Keith.
I nodded and blushed.
"AWWWWW! That's so sweet," said Luc, "Dude, I'm sorry for what I said."
They invited me in and Keith and Luc cleaned me up. I couldn't take my eyes off of Keith. He'd catch me looking and I'd blush. Then I'd catch him looking and he'd blush. He is so cute.
"Look, it's obvious you two need to talk. I'm going over to Rob's," said Luc.
"Rob Eastman?"
"Yeah, my boyfriend," Luc said wiggling his eyebrows.
My jaw must have hit the floor. I had no idea Luc was gay.
"Hey! You don't have an exclusive on being gay," he smiled
"Yeah but I do have an exclusive on Brad, right? " replied Keith.
"Oh, totally exclusive!" I exclaimed.
Luc
I was pleased about Keith and Brad but worried about what the future held. Acton could be an asshole. It was now out that Brad was gay and Keith being Keith – well he wouldn't let Brad take all the heat.
As for myself I knew I had a lot of friends but would they be my friends after they found out I was gay. Did I care? Damn right I cared. I'm a showoff. I love attention and admiration and yeah it would hurt to be shunned. It would hurt bad but I would get over it – I knew I'd have a lot of support from my family and from some of my teachers, especially Mr. Petri. Hell, he was the one that said Rob and I made a great couple – he knew I was gay before I realized it.
Now there was another problem. How would Rob react to me coming out? Would he go back into his shell? Would he want to break up? Suddenly I felt like I was damned if I did and damned if I didn't.
"Luc? Are you all right?"
"Huh?" I replied. I was standing at the front door of Rob's house. I blushed, "Ugh, yeah, Dr. Eastman."
She smiled, "Robbie's in his room you can go on down. You are staying for dinner."
"Yes, if you don't mind."
She shook her head, "Honey, I would never mind."
When I opened the door to Robbie's room he was playing his drums. He didn't even notice me he was so into it. Man! He was incredible! The sweat was pouring from his brow. He saw me and smiled but didn't miss a beat. I saw him look at his watch as he continued to play for a few more minutes.
"Sorry, I couldn't stop. I was doing a thirty-minute non-stop solo. Whew! How's your butt?"
"It's okay – it only hurts when I sit," I laughed.
"So, sup?"
"Huh? Oh, Brad came out."
"What! Brad Summers is gay?"
"Yeah. He outed himself to protect Keith and so I know Keith he'll out himself too – he is so in love with Brad. And...never mind." I said.
"You want to come out too, don't you?"
"I don't know," I sighed.
"Well, if you decide to or when you decide to just let me know babe," Rob said softly as he wrapped his arms around me then pulled me in for a kiss. "Cuz I ain't staying in the closet by myself."
"You'd come out?"
"Dude! I love you – I don't care what people think! All my life I've hidden – when I was young I hid that my parents were crack heads and beat us. Then I hid that they went to prison because they murdered my brother. Then I hid that I was gay. You changed all that! I LOVE YOU with ever last part of me! You accepted me. You are the only one that matters. What you think matters to me. If you come out – no, when you come out I'll be by your side. As they say until death do I part and even then I may just stick around and haunt you." Rob smiled.
Acton Felbridge
"Felbridge! Summers! In my office NOW!" ordered Coach Masters.
I knew this was about the fight we had. Brad and I were friends not close friends – thank God. He surprised the hell out of me when he said he was gay. I couldn't understand it. He was an awesome quarterback. I couldn't back down now or people might think I'm gay. I've got to make a stand here.
"Sit!"
We sat.
"What's this I hear about a fight between the two of you?"
"Summers is gay! I ain't playing with no gay," I said.
Coach raised an eyebrow. "Is this true, Summers?"
"Yes sir, but the fight was about Felbridge bullying a friend of mine," said Brad.
"Who?"
"His faggot boyfriend," I said snidely.
I could see the anger rising in Brad.
"I should suspend both of you, but we have a game coming up. I expect you to put aside your differences and work as a team."
"No way, Sir," I said, "I can't work as a team player with a faggot!"
"Really?" asked Coach Masters.
"Yes sir."
Up to this point I figured Coach Masters would side with me, but his next words hit me hard.
"Well, then Felbridge you're off the team," said the coach, "You're excused Felbridge. Summers go suit up."
Brad got up and left the office.
I was pissed.
"You're choosing a fucking queer over me! That is sick, man!" I said hatefully.
"No, Felbridge, I choosing a team player over a non-team player. It is not my place to judge a student by his race, religious belief, or anything else other than first his ability to be a team player and secondly by his talent. Now get out," said Coach Masters.
I got up and as I was leaving, I added, "There are other guys on the team who won't play with a faggot."
"Well, they will have the same choice as you to be a team player or not and we might as well handle this now." Coach followed me out of the office.
"Listen up. Acton Felbridge is now off the team. The reason being he chooses not to be a team player," announced Coach.
I interrupted, "I refuse to play on the team with a faggot."
"Felbridge, shut up, you are walking on very thin ice. If anyone else here can't put their prejudices and differences aside and work as a team – speak up now because if you can't work as a team mate then I don't want you on the team."
No one said anything or made a move to leave. I couldn't believe it.
"Tom you're coming, right?" I said to Tom Brown the best linebacker on the team.
He shook his head, "Brad maybe gay and that's his business. I'm not gay and that's my business. He's the best damn quarterback this school has had for years. I'm not rich like you dude. The only way I'm going to college is on a football scholarship. I have no problem with Brad or anybody who is gay or bisexual or straight on this team – I do have a problem with anybody who can't or won't be at team player. So I say right now if any other of you dudes feel like Acton then leave because without you the rest of this team IS GOING TO STATE!"
No one joined me. I left. I was pissed but pissed more at myself for thinking that others on the team would follow my lead and walk out. I should have stopped and thought it out. My dad knew Coach Masters – I think they've known each other since high school. Dad would sort out Coach Masters and get me back on the team and probably get Brad kicked off the team. It will serve the faggot right. Dad always asks, "How'd your day go?" I would sure let him know.

My brother. My best bud was gay. "NOOOOOOOOOOOO!" I scream.
